Stewardship . . .

In October we will be conducting our Annual Stewardship Campaign called “Expect a Mira-cle” and our key verse will be Habbakuk 1:5 “The LORD’s Answer 5 “Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told. I believe the Lord is still in the miracle business and often God uses His people to do great and mighty things. The campaign will run Sunday October 8th through October 29th and here are a couple of things I would ask you to consider. Pray for the entire month of October. A Prayer Calendar will be given out this Sunday but will also be available in Frist Place Café. Pray every day for both the stewardship of the church but also for us to meet the needs that are necessary for us to be in ministry and accomplish our mission. Secondly you (your family) will be asked to complete a Pledge Card. When we talk about fall Stewardship and pledge cards, often people ask “why do I need to fill out a pledge card”. Your pledge card is used by the Finance Committee to estimate the largest portion of our budget for 2018. If we do not have that information then likely we will have to estimate a lower budget and then begin to sacrifice ministries, which we never want to do. Third, on Sunday October 29th, after worship (around 12:15pm we will have a potluck luncheon (meat provided) and celebration of our Stewardship Campaign. Please plan to come back or stay for that luncheon. Bring a side dish and lets celebrate together what God is doing in our midst.

EARLY RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SAN ANGELO

OCT. 7, 2017

Registration - 8:00AM to 8:30AM Instruction - 8:30AM to 4:30PM INFORMATION & REGISTRATION: www.riotexas.org/early-response-team Early Response Teams (ERT) are specially trained teams that offer assistance soon after the disaster strikes. They generally do clean-up work and tasks required to stop further damage from being done, e.g. putting tarps on damaged roofs. They might do minor repairs that help make homes habitable, but they do not do extensive repairs or reconstruction (that is the job for Long Term Recovery). All members of an Early Response Team are required to complete the six to seven hour training course and must have a criminal background check. The training is done according to UMCOR guide-lines and policies. Persons completing the training and passing the criminal background check will be is-sued a badge indicating they are approved by the Rio Texas Conference and credentialed by UMCOR. Credentials are valid for three years. Procedures for recertifying as an ERT member and receiving new credentials are available at the website above. Persons who have not served on an Early Response Team responding to a disaster since their raining must retake the ERT training course in order to receive new credentials. A number of substantial changes have been made to the course in the past three years. The purpose of this team training is to orient people to the special needs and situations that are common after most natural disasters. In the first few days (and sometimes weeks) following a major storm, only teams that are trained and self-contained are useful. An Early Response Team is a special type of VIM Team An Early Response Team has a very narrow function and has no management or administrative responsibility for the overall disaster response. An “Early Response Team” should not be confused with a Disaster Recovery Team. An Early Response Team is a specially trained and certified team called to do early response. A Disaster Recovery Team is a type of UMVIM Team that comes to assist in the long term recovery, AFTER early response is completed. Each Early Response Team member must be trained and carry an identification badge reissued by UMCOR following successful comple-tion of Early Response Team Training. The Shine the Light event held on September 9 in memory of friends and loved ones who have died by suicide had over 400 attend. Luminaries lined the Concho River and the path was walked in solemn re-membrance. Music was provided by Daniel Mankins and Father Jarod Holtz gave an inspiring talk. Bar-b-que sandwiches with trimmings were prepared and provided by Emmanuel Episco-pal Church volunteers. Partici-pants helped hang pictures and “sayings” on a wall honoring loved ones. This Mosaic reflected the “light of love” felt and por-trayed how broken hearts can become beautifully healed.

Youth Night continues to be great with prayer, praise music and the game of Romans and Christians led by our Youth Council. The youth have a blast and love it when they get the oppor-tunity to play and share this simple fun youth tradition with their friends! Our next youth night gathering will be our traditional Class Olympics IV. Watch for when this will be held. Probably in early October. Youth council will set the date and we will let you know. We have been having a great Sunday morning Bible study. We have been studying Sun-day’s covenant regarding the 7th day Sabbath and honoring God’s all-sufficient power through rest and remembrance. It has been a good lesson with scripture coming from the book of Exo-dus. We will continue our “Covenant” series. Watch for sign-up genius for Sunday morning snacks. Please take a look at that when you re-ceive it and see how you can help. Spirit will meet at its normal times. On Oct. 4 we will finish rehearsal at 7:00 to help the “Somebody’s Rusty” ministry by packing up some bags similar to how Hurricane Relief bags were filled. Please plan on that. Sunday, September 25 during the 8:30 worship service, Karleigh Rivas along with youth band

members Phillip Lupton, Spencer Burress and Andrea Safont-Meador praise music was present-ed. They did a great job! In addition another shout out for them…. After the homecoming game this

past weekend at “5th Quarter” taking place at Glenn, these four led praise music for the gather-

ing. Always very proud of our youth that go beyond our church walls to share their faith with others!

"Confirmation is up and running! We've been discussing God's story found in Scrip-tures. God created, humans broke things, and God has redeemed! We have 9 students and some adults helping as we discuss what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Be praying for our students as they continue this Journey together!"
