Give all you can.” These are John Wesley’s rules for the use of money, and they make sense for us in the 21 st century just as much as they did for the early Methodists nearly 300 years ago. On the Sundays in October I will preach a series based on Wesley’s sermon, “The Use of Money”, and the study book Earn. Save. Give. which adult classes are studying at the same time. I encourage you to participate in the discussion, either in Sunday School or on Thursdays starting October 1. We think and talk a great deal about money. Do we know and follow God’s intention for the way we use it? Wesley considered this “an excellent branch of Christian wisdom”, and if we use money according to that wisdom, it is “an excellent gift of God” for “doing all manner of good”. That is stewardship: To use rightly what has been entrusted to us, honoring the intention of God who has placed it in our care. James Harnish, author of Earn. Save. Give. , starts with this: “We don’t need more money; we need wisdom about how to use the money we have.” He proposes the 10-10-80 formula: 10% for God, 10% for the future, 80% to live on with gratitude and joy. Explore how this formula can look in your life as we worship and study together. I guarantee you will find not only financial peace but soul peace. This is a generous church. Pastor’s Perspective

You’ve heard it before: “Earn all you can. Save all

you can. Give all you can.” These are John Wesley’s rules for

the use of money, and they make sense for us in the 21st

century just as much as they did for the early Methodists

On the Sundays in October I will preach a series

based on Wesley’s sermon, “The Use of Money”, and the

study book Earn. Save. Give. which adult classes are studying

at the same time. I encourage you to participate in the

discussion, either in Sunday School or on Thursdays starting

October 1.

We think and talk a great deal about money. Do we

know and follow God’s intention for the way we use

it? Wesley considered this “an excellent branch of Christian

wisdom”, and if we use money according to that wisdom, it is

“an excellent gift of God” for “doing all manner of

good”. That is stewardship: To use rightly what has been

entrusted to us, honoring the intention of God who has placed

it in our care.

James Harnish, author of Earn. Save. Give., starts

with this: “We don’t need more money; we need wisdom

about how to use the money we have.” He proposes the

10-10-80 formula: 10% for God, 10% for the future, 80% to live

on with gratitude and joy. Explore how this formula can look

in your life as we worship and study together. I guarantee

you will find not only financial peace but soul peace.

This is a generous church. I am thankful to serve

God with you at Berkeley.

Encouragement for us as we move forward in our Ministry Action Plan!

Submitted by Rachel Trudell

August 17, 2015 - from Lead Like Jesus

Lead Like Jesus emphasizes two kinds of habits - habits of being and hab-

its of doing. Each is important. Practicing the being habits supports ongo-

ing personal transformation, keeping our hearts humble before God and

open to His Spirit’s leading. These spiritual disciplines shape our leader-

ship motivation, point-of-view, and the way we deal with others. As a re-

sult, the Spirit increasingly shapes our reactions and responses so that we

find ourselves more naturally reflecting Jesus’ leadership style. How does

God want to use this time with Him to strengthen you to meet today’s

leadership pressures?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faith-

fulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

Prayer: God, shape us from the inside out as we meditate on Your Word.

Let our actions flow from the presence of Your Spirit within us.

Strengthen us so that when the pressure mounts we will more naturally

reflect Jesus. In His name we pray, amen.

COME ON OUT AND MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS! The Outreach Team from Berkeley UMC and the Cherry Creek

Neighborhood Association are organizing the Neighborhood Night

Fair Trade Coffee and Tea Sale

The United Methodist Women will sell Fair Trade coffee and tea on Sunday

mornings, October 18 and 25. Whole bean and ground coffee, and tea in bags,

will be sold at the same prices as last time. This sale benefits the UMW in our

local mission work. It also benefits the growers of the coffee and tea by

paying a fair price for their commodities. To learn more about Fair Trade and

the Equal Exchange Program visit www.equalexchange.coop.
