‘ROUND THE BENZ

What an exciting September for the Pikes Peak Sec-tion. Almost every week-end last month, there was an op-portunity to get out and meet fellow members

and to drive our cars. From the Mixer Board Meeting at the Airplane Restaurant to the CC&V Gold Mine Tour in Victor to the Paved Passes & Peppers drive, there was an event that was sure to please everyone’s driving desire. I hope you are already participating in our Paved Peaks & Passes program because at every driving event last month, there was an opportunity to tally more passes and to further fill out your passport with the stamp of a completed pass.

October brings more official events for you to drive more passes. The program is structured so that you can drive the needed passes any time you like and self-verify with your own photo to receive your passport stamp at a later date. You have two years to complete your pass-port, so there’s no time pressure. It’s also not a competition so Type A’s out there can relax and enjoy the drive.

If you have any interest in serving on the Pikes Peak Section Board of Directors, please join us on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:00 p.m. at BJ’s Restaurant & Brew-house. This year we’ve got three posi-tions up for reelection. Board members serve three-year terms and attendance

at monthly board meetings is expected. If you would like to serve, check out the article on page 1 for more information.

If you just want to have a scary good time, please join us on Saturday, October 18, for our Halloween Rally, planned by yours truly. I promise not to make it too hard, honest! I also promise it will be a fun day with fellow Mercedes-Benz driv-ers. Come on out and see how to cel-ebrate Halloween Mercedes-style.

The reservation form for our 2015 Christ-mas Party is on page 4. Get your reser-vations in early for this, our most festive event of the year. It will be held again at the venerable El Paso Club in downtown Colorado Springs on Sunday, December 7. Appetizers and a 3-course meal and awards to the Member and Officer of the Year are on the program as is the high-light of the evening, the raffle. Send in your reservation form today since seats are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis.

And on a final note, I would be remiss if I didn’t update you on the latest Formula One results. Mercedes AMG’s Lewis Hamilton is back in the title lead of the 2014 Formula One World Championship. His teammate Nico Rosberg was forced to retire due to car trouble on lap 13 of the September Singapore Grand Prix. Hamilton was the eventual victor in the thrilling race, with Infiniti Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel crossing the line in second, 13.5 seconds back.

As always, drive safely, and I will see you down the road.

Saturday, 15 November 20149:00 a.m.

Join us for breakfast on Saturday, 15 No-vember at The Egg & I, 733 N. Academy Blvd, for some good food and great com-pany among your fellow Star Car owners.

Order from the extensive breakfast menu - their omelets are great. Have a cup of coffee and get in on the latest news from the Section. It’s a casual but hospitable event.

We currently don’t have an organized event planned for after breakfast. If the weather cooperates, we might go for a drive and pick up some passes for the Paved Peaks & Passes program. Or if someone has an idea for a place of inter-est to go, we’ll follow his or her lead. This is our month to be spontaneous, as our Fun Runs were originally intended to be.

Surprise yourself - come on out and see what we’re going to do.

November Fun Run

Sunday, 16 November 201410:00 a.m.

Time to winterize, Pikes Peak Section! Winter will be here before you know it and the Farmer’s Almanac promises it will be a doozy.

Get busy winterizing your cars - install snow tires ahead of the first blizzard; change the battery, replace worn-out windshield wipers, adjust your coolant levels, and check your belts and hoses. These are all quick and easy projects you can do yourself at a huge savings. Remember Dan Kerbs and Gary Gagnon each saved over $1000 on running boards for their MLs at our last D-I-Y Tech Ses-sion. All you pay for is the parts (at our 20% discount, of course) and a $10 fee to use the service bay.

Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs will provide service techs to help you over the rough spots. Think of the sense of pride you’ll feel when you fix your Benz yourself!

Come on down to Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs on Sunday, 16 November at 10:00 a.m. for our Winter Do-It-Yourself Tech Session. Call Dave Williamson at 719-575-7976 to re-serve your service bay and lift.

Mercedes-Benz will introduce plug-in hy-brids throughout its lineup, said R&D chief Thomas Weber. “We will have a plug-in hybrid version of every volume model,” Weber said at a press event for the S550 plug-in hybrid, the brand’s first plug-in hybrid.

Besides the S class, the plan calls for plug-in hybrid versions of the C class, as well as the next E class and replace-ments for the GLK class and the M class. The plug-in hybrid system also works with

all-wheel drive. Station wagons and SUVs will have a modified, flatter battery pack to create an even loading floor. He did not specify timing, but said Mer-cedes would launch 10 plug-in hybrids by 2017.

2014 Christmas Party - 7 December 2014Don’t miss the Pikes Peak Section’s 2014 Christmas Party at the El Paso Club. Or-ganized on October 23, 1877, the El Paso Club is believed to be the oldest private town club west of Chicago. This elegant and much-envied location will be the back-drop as we celebrate the holiday season and the camaraderie of the Mercedes-Benz community. Black tie is encouraged or coat and tie, holiday/cocktail attire.

The menu includes three entrée selections: mixed grill (broiled 5 oz. filet mignon and baked 3 oz. salmon filet); or broiled 10 oz. New York steak; or chicken cordon-bleu. Accompanying the entrée will be Caesar salad, twice baked potato, fresh green beans with almond slivers and roasted to-matoes with basil, rolls & butter, water, iced tea, and coffee service. Dessert is a choice of the El Paso Club’s Goldbrick sundae or the mixed berry tart.

Included in your meal price is one glass of beer or wine and hors d’oeuvres dur-ing our cocktail hour starting at 5:00 p.m. followed by an outstanding dinner at 6:00 p.m. Additional glasses of beer or wine may be purchased. Also bottles of wine

may be purchased for the dinner table. (Please note the El Paso Club is a private club that doesn’t deal in credit cards, so please bring cash and/or check, if you wish to purchase wine by the bottle or additional glasses of beer or wine.)

We will be holding a raffle again this year to benefit a local charity. You select the raffle prize you would like by putting one half of your raffle ticket in the container in front of the prize. One raffle ticket is includ-ed in your meal price. Six additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $5.00. You may purchase as many as you desire.

If there are any questions, please contact Gary or Diane Gagnon, 719-282-9313 or Andrea Hansen, [email protected]; for information. Reservations are only held with the receipt of your res-ervation form and payment. This is an all inclusive evening for your $55/per person fee. Make your reservations now for Sun-day, December 7th, 5:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m. Deadline for reservations is Monday, December 1, 2014, or until we sell out the space. Space is limited.

Top Down Holiday Lights Drive - 13 December 2014

The annual Pikes Peak Section Potluck Dinner is on for Sunday, January 26, at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs, 730 Automotive Drive. For those of you who are counting, that’s the week BEFORE Super Bowl XLIX in Arizona! This is one of our favorite events of the year and the one our members look forward to the most.

The dealership provides the setup and beverages. All we have to do is bring the food. So, everyone, please plan

to bring a dish to share – a salad, a main dish, or a des-sert. Showcase your favorite dishes – we’re flexible and we like everything.

We’ll kick off at 6:00 p.m. sharp. We’ll have great food and some surprises in store for attendees. We’ll recap our driving year and preview what’s to come.

Please call Glenn Hamill at 719-575-7931 or Dave Wil-liamson at 719-575-7976 to RSVP and to let them know what you’ll bring.

2015 Potluck Dinner - 25 January 2015

Shine up your Star Car for the 2014 Top Down Holiday Lights Tour. Tim and Marla Wiseman are hosting the event again this year.

The date is Saturday, 13 December, weather per-mitting. We’ll meet to unload crockpots, break up into groups to tour holiday lights on a designated route, and end at Tim and Marla’s house for bever-ages and food as we thaw out fingers and toes.

All makes and models of roadsters are en-

couraged and welcome. Even if you don’t have a roadster, plan to join the fun with any Mercedes-Benz vehicle that you have

– open sun roofs count.

We’ll send a detailed e-mail blast a week before the drive so we can make a “guessti-mate” about

the weather. Be sure we have your current e-mail address.

The cost is $5 per person. Watch your November and December newsletters for more details.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that its new C63 AMG will be powered by a version of the M178 twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 debuting in the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT

sports car, and that in the C-Class-based sledgehammer the engine will deliver up to 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. For those at home counting, the hp figure matches the output of the more potent GT S sports car but the torque figure is actually 37 lb-ft higher!

This output will likely be reserved for a new C63 AMG S model, with the stock C63 AMG previously report-ed to be delivering about 470 hp. By com-parison, the 2015 BMW M3 is rated at just 425 hp while the 2015 Lexus RC F makes

do with 467 hp.

Rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission are expected to be standard across the new C63 AMG range. And once again there will be sedan, wagon and coupe bodystyles. We’ve also been told that an even more potent Black Series model is planned.

But the story doesn’t end there. In addi-tion to class-leading output, the new C63 AMG is also promised to have the best fuel economy in the segment. Mercedes says the engine will be good for 28.6 mpg on the European combined cycle, although it should be noted that EPA-rated fuel econ-omy tends to be lower than the European figures.

A debut of the new C63 AMG is scheduled to take place later this year, either at the 2014 Paris Auto Show on October 2 or at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show in No-vember.

Mercedes-Benz’s all-new 2015 GLA-Class is set to go on sale this fall, priced from as little as $32,225 including a $925 destination charge. The entry-level model is a GLA250 with front-wheel drive. Should you require all-wheel drive, the price tag

increases by $2,000 to $34,225.

Also available this fall will be the high-performance 2015 GLA45 AMG, which comes standard with all-wheel drive and will set you

back at least $49,225, once again includ-ing $925 in shipping. That means pricing of the GLA45 AMG is right in line with that of the CLA45 AMG, our Best Car To Buy 2014 winner.

All 2015 GLAs, including the AMG, are powered by turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. The GLA250 models

have a peak output of 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the GLA45 AMG has 355 hp and 332 lb-ft on tap. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is fit-ted as standard across the range. The 0-60 mph time in the GLA250 is approximately 7.1 seconds while in the GLA45 AMG it will take you just 4.8 seconds.

Inside the cabin, there’s a 5.8-inch display and Bluetooth audio streaming as standard. There is also a long list of options that in-cludes a bigger 7-inch display, heated and adjustable seats, Harmon/Kardon premium sound and a driver assistance package with DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control and blind spot and lane keeping warning systems.

The GLA’s closest rival, the BMW X1, starts at $31,850 including $950 in ship-ping charges. This model also features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four as standard but comes with rear-wheel drive.

On Sunday, Sep 14, 26 members of the Pikes Peak Sec-tion visited the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine in Victor, CO. We started out at the Lowell Museum with a safety briefing before dividing up into 2 tour busses for our trip through the gold mine.

This is an open pit strip mining operation that seeks to recover the miniscule

amounts of gold left over from the Colorado gold rush days. It’s a very profitable op-eration that employs over 500 people and provides the economic engine for the entire county.

Our tour guides took us from the top of the pit all the way to the bottom, explaining the operation all the way. On our way up past the crushing machine, we stopped at one of the world’s largest ore haulers for a hands-on inspection and crawl-around. Photo ops were awesome.

Tour finished, we stopped at the Fortune Club for a late lunch of home-made burg-ers and burritos. It’s a little hole-in-the-wall place with great food, and if you’re ever in the area, try their ice cream.

Henry and Sylvia Russell outdid themselves in putting this one together and this tour should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The Paved Peaks & Passes program is coming down to the wire for this summer. We’ve got four teams eligible for their 30 Peak patch, meaning they have completed their P3 passport.

Together we have driven all of the 36

possible passes and we have driven 288 passes total. That’s an awesome accom-plishment. Check out all the photos on our Facebook page at “MBCA Pikes Peak Section.” Get your passport today, and join the fun!

Mountains, Movies & Mercedes Recap The Pikes Peak Section scored a true tour d’force with our regional extravaganza on Labor Day weekend. We had 60 at-tendees from all over the country - Texas, California, Florida, and as far away as New Zealand. We gathered on Friday evening to begin the weekend at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs for an elegant reception catered by the Springs Rescue Mission. The food was superb and the camaraderie unparalleled. We met new folks and made our plans for a big weekend.

Saturday morning we breakfasted on bur-ritos and sweets before heading out for a spectacular drive through the aptly named Garden of the Gods. From there it was up to Pikes Peak and the world’s highest car corral. The forest rangers had roped off a special parking area on America’s moun-tain just for us - how cool. Then it was down to the El Pomar Carriage Museum for a tour into yesteryear before dinner at the Golden Bee at the Broadmoor.

On Sunday we met bright and early to

watch the hot air balloons of the Colorado Balloon Festival launch from Memorial Park. They seemed to come right over our viewing area where we enjoyed hot coffee, donuts and mimosas. Then it was time for our main event - the Drive-In Movie Rally that took us all over Colorado Springs with stops for beer, ice cream, and tapas, all the while making our get-away from the bad guys who seemed to pop up everywhere! We finally arrived back at event HQ for din-ner and a movie. We grilled our steaks and chowed down on beans, slaw, fried chicken and pie. We hopped in our cars before the big screen truck and as the sun set, tuned our radios to Knight and Day. From all ac-counts, it was a fabulous weekend and one all the attendees are eager to repeat.

Thanks to Dan and Cheryl Kerbs and their event committee for showcasing our beau-tiful city and putting on an event that will be tough to beat. Check out all the pictures on our Facebook page at “MBCA Pikes Peak Section”

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Mercedes-Benz’s new CLA-Class is selling far better than the automaker had expected, according to Dieter Zetsche, the

CEO of Mer-cedes’ parent Daimler. The compact sedan, which is priced from $30,825, in-cluding destina-tion, has proven so popular that

tight supplies (in some cases just 10 days) are now causing Mercedes to lose potential sales.

“We could have sold twice as many ve-hicles, easily, compared to our planning,” Zetsche told Automotive News. The re-action has been “beyond our optimistic

expectations.”

The CLA was launched in the U.S. a year ago and saw its sales peak at 4,895 units last October. However, back in May sales slowed to 1,214 units because of supply constraints. In response, Mercedes added a third shift at the car’s plant in Kecskemet, Hungary.

The plant made close to 110,000 CLAs over the past year and this figure is ex-pected to grow now that the additional shift has been added. Some of these extra cars will reach U.S. showrooms, but Zetsche declined to say how many.

Note, Mercedes has just started selling GLA-Class compact and it may prove just as popular as the CLA. This model is priced from $32,225, including destination.

CLA Doubles Expectations by V. Vijayenthiran

“Mercedes

has proven

to be a leader

in the field of

autonomous

cars.”

CA Autonomous Car License by V. VijayenthiranMercedes-Benz has received a new license from the state of California to allow testing of autonomous car prototypes on public roads. California has allowed limited use of its roads for autonomous car testing in the past, and in 2012 it finally passed a bill that set out laws to allow the self-driving cars on its roads.

The laws call for proof of insurance or sure-ty bonds for manufacturers testing auto-mated driving research cars, and licenses for company-designated operators of those vehicles. The laws also call for surety bond coverage of at least $5 million for each vehicle being used for testing.

Moreover, Mercedes aims to ensure its autonomous car prototypes are safe to be used in normal traffic. The test vehicles are specially equipped to this end: the driver must recognize clearly when the car is in autonomous driving mode and must be able to override this mode at any time; in addition, the car must be capable of stopping autonomously at any time.

Mercedes has proven to be a leader in the field of autonomous cars, having offered vehicles with autonomous driving capabil-

ity for close to a year. However, the new license will help the automaker further advance the technology by allowing test-ing in one of the world’s most important car markets. The aim is to develop a car that can handle all driving situations on its own.

It’s also important that automakers test the self-driving systems in a variety of condi-tions, as the difference in road types be-tween countries is vast. While motoring in Germany commonly takes place on narrow roads, the roads in the U.S. are frequently wider and may have more than six or even eight lanes. Traffic lights are installed on the opposite side of the road, there are numerous scenarios for merging, and then there are the ‘4-way’ stops, where the first to reach the junction is allowed to go first.

“The knowledge that Mercedes-Benz gains will help to achieve significant strides in the further technological development of autonomous driving,” Mercedes R&D chief Thomas Weber said in a statement. “Through our new research activities we aim to promote the topic specifically in the USA, as the traffic system in the USA dif-fers from the system in Germany in numer-ous aspects.”
