Annual Potluck Dinner

The Best or Nothing!

Sunday, 25 January 20156:00 p.m.

The annual Pikes Peak Section Potluck Dinner is scheduled for Sunday, January 25, at Mercedes-Benz of Colo-rado Springs, 730 Auto-motive Drive. For those of you who are counting, that’s the week BEFORE Super Bowl XLIX in Ari-zona! (Go Broncos!) This is a great way to kick off a great year of Pikes Peak Section events. It is also one of our favorite events of the year and the one our members look forward to the most.

The dealership gener-ously provides the setup and beverages - soda, water, and wine. All we have to do is bring the food, and plenty of it. So, everyone, please plan to bring a dish to share – a salad, a main dish, or a dessert. Showcase your favorite dishes – we’re flexible and we like everything.

We’ll kick off at 6:00 p.m. sharp. There will be great food and even some surprises in store for attendees. From the MBCA logo cake, courtesy of FairieTales Bakehouse,

to the incredible crockpot lineup of main dishes, no one leaves hungry.

We’ll recap our driving year and preview what’s to come in 2015. We’re looking for-

ward to the unveiling of the 2015 version of the Paved Peaks & Passes program. Yep, we’re going driving again this summer and we’ll see lots more of our beauti-ful state of Colorado.

The dealership will spice up the evening with some special auction items. Our crazy auctioneer, Glenn and his able assistant, Jadyn, will be hard at work to enter-tain and amaze and extract dollar bills out of your wal-let. Who knows what they’ll

‘ROUND THE BENZ

It was good to see so many members at our annual Christmas Party. Again held at the El Paso Club in downtown Colorado Springs, the dinner

and service were exceptional and the weather was seasonal, but not snowy, icy or too cold as has been the norm for the last few years. Many thanks to our Pikes Peak Section Christmas Party planning team of Gary and Diane Gagnon, Andrea Hansen, and Bill Kasper. Through their efforts, another successful Christmas Party was completed.

Congratulations are also in order to Gary Gagnon, awarded our Section 2014 Member of the Year, and to Dan Kerbs for being honored with the Donn and Dorit Wald Award. Judy Bennett, our Section Vice-President, newsletter editor, and creator of our Section’s exclusive Paved Peaks & Passes Program, was awarded the much coveted 2014 Rocky Mountain Region Officer of the Year. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs for their outstanding support all year long and especially for the wonderful door prizes for some very lucky raffle winners.

The weather again cooperated for our annual Top Down Christmas Lights Tour. Like the Christmas Party, no snow and the tour was dry, with temperatures

maybe dipping into the low 30s. It was still cold enough driving the open cars that we all needed warming up at our destination. We arrived to a pot luck of several different offerings of chili, King Ranch, meatballs, clam chowder, and an entire delicious array of Christmas des-serts. With mulled wine and cocktails as an accompaniment, our toes were toasty in no time at all! Thanks to Tim and Marla Wiseman for opening their beautiful home to host the event.

The Section’s 2015 event year kicks off with our traditional Pot Luck Dinner at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. Please join us on Sunday, 25 January at 6:00 p.m. We know from past years that our members are excellent cooks with a surprising repertoire of dishes. Please call Glenn Hamill or Dave Wil-liamson at the dealership to RSVP and to let them know what you’ll be bringing - a salad, main dish or dessert, please. We’ll recap 2014 and preview what’s to come in 2015. And there will be more auction prizes for our very lucky members. I hope to see many of you there.

Our Valentine’s Day Dinner is also com-ing up fast. This year, it’s actually on Valentine’s Day, February 14. We will be at Joseph’s Fine Dining on 8th St. They just moved into a brand new facility and it’s charming. We will be ordering from a special Valentine’s Day menu created by Joseph himself. It’s sure to be delicious. Seating is limited, so make sure you get your seats reserved as soon as possible.

As always, drive safely, and I will see you down the road.

10:30 a.m.

Because January weather can be so problematic for driving, we’re going to try something different to kick off our 2015 schedule of events. Print City, our partner in developing our on-line store, has graciously of-fered up its facilities to our members for a Pikes Peak Section logo-mak-ing workshop.

Here’s how it will work. After break-fast at The Egg & I at Citadel Cross-ing at Platte & Academy, we will head over to Print City, 4510 Edison Ave., where we will be doing silk screening and sublimation on our selected items. Log on to our e-store website at www.tinyurl.com/k5tcday. Select the items you want to personalize with the Pikes Peak Section logo. You can do t-shirts,

caps, mugs, water bottles, bags, aprons, etc. - Bbasically anything that can be silk-screened.

Kim, the owner, will be on hand with her staff to walk us through the various pro-cesses. The only cost for this event is the price of the item and the silk-screening and sublimation supplies. Once you select an item to personalize, Kim will let us know the exact cost.

So, check out the accessories, bag, and cap tabs in our on-line store to get some ideas for what you’d like to create. We’re asking you sign up ahead of time so that Kim can make sure to have the materials you require on hand.

Please call Judy Bennett to sign up by 7 January 2015 or direct any questions to her at [email protected] or 719-576-9737.

Let’s plaster that Pikes Peak Section logo on everything. Think world domination via PPS graffiti! It might be too late for Christmas presents for that special someone, but there are birthdays and anniversaries

Mercedes AMG’s Lewis Hamilton is the 2014 Formula One World Champion, after he won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He’s now the first Mercedes driver to claim the title since Juan Manuel Fan-gio, all the way back in 1955. His team-mate Nico Rosberg finished second in the championship. The Mercedes AMG team was given the title in the Construc-tors’ Championship back at the Russian Grand Prix.

Between them, Hamilton and Rosberg ac-cumulated 16 wins, 18 pole positions, 12 fastest laps and 31 podium finishes. With eleven one-two wins in a single season, the team surpassed the previous record

set by McLaren in 1988. In addition, the 16th victory of the season in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix means Mercedes AMG no lon-ger shares the record with any other team for the highest number of wins in a single season. Congratulations, Mercedes AMG!

It’s been a few years since we visited the Big Cats of Serenity Springs. We figured we’d stop by and say “Hi” to our favorites for the February Fun Run. We’ll be head-ing to the Serenity Springs Wildlife Center after breakfast on Saturday, 21 February. The Center is located in Calhan, CO at the end of a well-maintained dirt road. It’s about 12 miles from the intersection of Woodmen Rd and Hwy 24.

They currently have over 120 big cats and

exotics in residence, including lions, tigers, cougars, coutimundi, caracals, binturong,

servals, bobcats, and leopards. (There will be a quiz later on what some of these are....just kidding.)You’ll hear all about the animals during our

guided tour.

Contact Julie Nelson for more infor-mation or to reserve your spot on the tour - 719-634-7522 (home) or [email protected].

Valentine’s Day Dinner - 14 February 2015Joseph’s Fine Dining Restaurant has just moved into a new facility at 1603 S. 8th St. We’re going to help them celebrate their grand opening with a Pikes Peak Section gourmet dinner on Valentine’s Day 2015.

Yes, there really is a Joseph and he’s been in the restaurant business for over 25 years, work-ing in many five-star hotels and restaurants, including supervising the Penrose Room of the Broadmoor Hotel. He knows what he’s doing.

Using his history in fine dining and his culinary expertise, Joseph has created a menu at his new location where he mixes the old world style of table-side flambé cooking with nouveau cuisine sure to suit the tastes

of even the most discriminating diner.

We will be ordering from a special Val-entine’s Day menu created by Joseph personally. Details are still being worked

out but last year’s menu included an incredible array of seafood, poultry, and beef entrees along with special appetizers and salads and, of course, spectacular Valentine’s Day desserts. Think choc-olate, everyone. Check out the regular dinner menu at http://www.josephsdining.com.

Make your reservations today since seating is limited. Reservation deadline is 4 February. Contact Judy Ben-nett at bennett [email protected] or give her a call at 719-576-9737.

Mercedes-Benz is recalling 8,279 Sprinter vans in the United States because of a po-tential oil leak that would increase the risk of a fire or a stalling engine.

Daimler AG is recalling certain Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans from model years 2014 and 2015 because oil may leak from

around the chain tensioner gasket in the four-cylinder diesel engine, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The leaking oil may also be a road hazard for other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash, the NHTSA documents said.

Shelby Museum/Leanin’ Tree Tour - 21 March 2015After the Pikes Peak Section monthly breakfast in March, we will take a road trip to the Shelby American Museum in Boul-der, CO, for a tour of the premier Shelby Museum in America. During the tour you’ll have the pleasure of seeing famous 289 Cobras, 427 Cobras, a priceless Daytona Coupe, GT40s, GT350s, GT500s, and AC autos. The museum has been made pos-sible by the generosity of Shelby owners and collectors.

There is a well-stocked gift shop for you to pick up something very unique as a me-mento of your visit. The tour should last 1 1⁄2 to 2 hours.

For those who may not fancy a trip to an old sports car museum, there is the Leanin’ Tree fine art mu-seum very close to the Shelby Museum and best of all, the admission to the art museum is FREE.

Lunch location after the museum/art museum visit is yet to be determined. Watch for more details in the February newsletter.

President’s Rally - 18 April 2015President Andrew is betting that we won’t experience an April blizzard this year because he’s ginning up his annual President’s Rally a little early. Bust out your pencils and clipboards, make nice to your navigators, and get ready to rally!

We’ll be starting out after break-fast on Saturday, 18 April, for

parts currently unknown. He’s not dropping any hints either, so we don’t know the theme or where we’ll be going; but we can be sure we’ll have fun.

We know you’ve just recovered from his Halloween Rally last year, but he’s rarin’ to go again. Let’s have a great turnout for this event.

D-I-Y Tech Session - 26 April 2015Let’s get ready for summer driving, Pikes Peak Section! Summer is just around the corner and we’ve got places to go and people to see in our beautiful Benzes.

Swap out those snow tires, replace worn-out windshield wipers, adjust your coolant levels, and check your belts and hoses.

These are all quick and easy projects you can do yourself at a huge savings. All you pay for is the parts (at our 20% discount) and a $10 fee to use the service bay.

You can do it all on Sunday, 26 April at 10:00 a.m. at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. Come on down!

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Pikes Peak BoutiqueWhat a great way to start 2015! The Pikes Peak Section is re-introducing our Section shirts and a whole lot more. We’re joining the digital age and creating an on-line store where our members can order shirts, caps, jackets, and accessories embroidered or silk-screened with the Section logo. At a future date, we will offer items with the MBCA logo as well.

We’re working out the kinks in the website and we’ll keep adding to it as it ma-tures. To get to the Pikes Peak Boutique, click on www.tinyurl.com/k5tcday. The store can also be accessed via our website at www.mbca.org/pikes_peak.

The impetus for this move is the number of queries we have received from our mem-

bers. They see some of our older members (older as in years of membership, not age!) wearing the Section shirts we procured several years ago and want to know how to get them. This move answers the mail for those folks.

Members can order from several styles of shirts, men’s and women’s both. All styles of the shirts will be similar in color to foster Sec-tion identity. Order a shirt or cap and

come on out for Section events. We’ll be easy to identify - just look for our shirts!

If you have difficulty with the website or have suggestions for our on-line store, con-tact Judy Bennett at [email protected] to let her know or give her a call at 719-576-9737.

Tweel Airless Tire by Stephen Edelstein

“We’re joining

the digital age

and creating an

on-line store....”

Combining a tire and a wheel into a single airless ‘tweel’ has proven to be a popular concept, although it still hasn’t gone main-stream. Michelin is the latest company to announce a production tweel, but not for any automotive applica-tions—just yet.

It will open a dedicated tweel-producing factory in Piedmont, SC, this week. However these airless tires will be used on skid-steer loaders and certain models of John Deere lawn mow-ers, not cars.

Michelin’s design uses a steel center hub that bolts on just like a conventional wheel. The spokes are poly-resin and can deform around obstacles, but there’s still an outer tread like on conven-tional tires that can be made in different patterns for different applications. Since

there’s nothing to inflate, there’s also no possibility of getting a flat.

That—along with the potential weight savings of combining tire and wheel—has

led to plenty of tweel experimentation since Michelin introduced the concept in 2005. Both Bridgestone and Hankook have dem-onstrated their own airless-tire concepts. Hankook has also claimed NVH improve-ments because of the shock-absorbing quali-ties of its design.

If you want to get your hands on a set of tweels, but don’t

operate a loader or lawnmower for a living, Polaris also offers them on its Sportsman WV850 H.O. ATV, a military-inspired off-road vehicle that really puts this technology to the test.

“Combining

a tire and a

wheel into a

single airless

“tweel”....”

2014 Christmas Party Recap The Pikes Peak Section annual Christmas Party was held on Sunday, 7 December, at the El Paso Club in Colorado Springs. It was an elegant evening of fun, food, and friends - and some awesome raffle prizes.

We began with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and buying raffle tickets before heading into dinner. Then it was time for some good food, superbly served, and thoroughly enjoyed. Raffle ticket numbers were called out throughout the meal and prizes were awarded with abandon. No-body was disappointed in their winnings.

At award time, President Andrew Nelson

presented the Pikes Peak Section Member of the Year Award to Gary Gagnon. Fol-lowing a short history of the award by Pete Watson, Andrew then presented Dan Kerbs with the Donn and Dorit Wald Award. The official award is currently hanging in Mer-cedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. The final award was presented by Steve Dierks to Judy Bennett for Rocky Mountain Region Officer of the Year. Our thanks to Gary and Diane Gagnon and their party committee of Andrea Hansen and Bill Kasper and Mer-cedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. Check out all the party pictures on our FaceBook page at “MBCA Pikes Peak Section.”

Holiday Lights Drive RecapOn Saturday, 13 December, Pikes Peak Section members participated in our an-nual drive to view holiday lights - with our tops down. It was a roadster night to shine and we had SLKs and an SL all decked out in their holiday finery, aka twinkle lights and reindeer noses. The MLs, Cs, and Es had a good time too with their windows rolled down and sunroofs open. The weather co-operated with clear skies and temps in the 30s but our heaters were more than equal to the task.

We travelled all over town to see the best lights from the Broadmoor to the Old North End and back and we tuned our radios to dancing lights in Skyway. We ended up at Tim and Marla Wiseman’s house for warming libations, crockpot delights, and an entire table of desserts! It was a great night. Thanks, Tim and Marla!

MBUSA Moving? by Urvaksh Karkaria

German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz is considering relocating its U.S. headquarters to Atlanta from New Jersey, Atlanta Business Chronicle has learned. This move south could bring 1,000 jobs along with it. The automaker has been look-ing for a facility with 150,000 square-feet of space. The Mercedes headquarters reloca-tion could include consolidation of back-office operations from around the country.

MBUSA is responsible for the distribu-tion, marketing and customer service for all Mercedes-Benz products in the United States. In Montvale, N.J., Mercedes oc-cupies about 141,000 square feet of office space on about 37 acres, where it employs about 800.

The high cost of living and property taxes, particularly in Bergen County, NJ, where Mercedes is currently headquartered, can make it difficult to recruit corporate talent to the region. There is also concern about what a post-Chris Christie New Jersey might look like for business.

Metro Atlanta is an attractive site for cor-porate headquarters, with a deep pool of knowledge workers and a low cost of doing business. Southern states, including Georgia, have also been aggressive with tax incentives as a way to draw corporate expansions and relocations. Mercedes has reportedly been offered $40 million to $50

million in incentives to move to Atlanta.

Mercedes’ move to Atlanta would put the automaker close to one of the major seaports it uses for vehicles arriving from overseas. The automaker uses the Port of Brunswick near Savannah to ship its vehicles. Additionally, the automaker’s Tuscaloosa, AL plant is a short hop away. Mercedes builds C-class and SUVs in Tus-caloosa.

Atlanta is a top East Coast sales market for Mercedes. Atlanta is also home to a massive airport, is situated in a state that offers strong incentives for companies, and there’s already another auto-maker (Porsche) in the neighbor-hood.

Porsche has called Georgia home for a number of years, and the sports car and sporty-ish SUV and CUV builder is planning to renew its investment in the area with a large new facility. Inciden-tally, Porsche is already Mer-cedes’ neighbor back in Germany.

Next year, Porsche will open a $100 million headquarters at Aerotropolis, a 130-acre mixed-use development near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Porsche’s presence in Atlanta likely contrib-uted to Mercedes’ decision. The Porsche headquarters suggests the area has a pool of auto industry corporate workers and business friendly government officials.

Mercedes’ possible relocation underscores the continued southward migration of the auto industry. The Southeast has become an emerging threat to the Midwest’s domi-nation as an auto industry hub, as Nissan, Toyota, Kia and Volkswagen put plants in low cost, union-free Southern states.

The Atlanta pick could also be about brand-ing as Mercedes competes with Audi and BMW for millennial buyers with lower-priced models. Atlanta, unlike Montvale, is associated with a young and hip image that Mercedes wants to cultivate.
