Here at the Honors Program or the University o

Montevallo, communication is important. Tere are severalways in which we, as an organization, have attempted to relayinormation to you. We have this newsletter, or one, and, ocourse, a Facebook page. Despite these encouraged means o

communication, there are many students who complain thatthey are unaware o several events sponsored by the HonorsProgram. o eliminate this, we have sought out the perect wayo getting in touch with you, as students, by asking you justhow you would like to be approached with vital inormation.

Many students said Facebook was defnitely the bestway to go, but there are still people who arent getting the

inormation. Others suggested OrgSync, the new system oon-campus club-based interaction, but even this provesaultythere are several students who have yet to register withtheir OrgSync accounts.

One student, by the name o Levi Pulord, has ex-pressed his preerence or mass email through the orum net-work, claiming that he checks it, like, every day, and thatthis, would be the perect way or the Honors Program to getin touch with me. Tis is a airly routine operation, and has a

relatively high success rate. As ar as suggestions go, these arealmost irrelevant in their entirety due to their already presenteciency. But one student had the know-how to defne a new

method o communication that would surely work i not betterthan then just as well as the previously mentioned methods ocommunication. Candace Ward suggested that the HonorsProgram send out a mass text about upcoming events. Tis, ocourse, would require all students participating in the HonorsProgram to submit their phone numbers. Let us know whatyou, readers, think o this potential development.

Chess players in Montevallo have a lot to look orward to this Spring.

Te Alabama Scholastic Chess Championships, a statewide competition, is

planned to take place at this very university around the middle o March. Te

winner o the Open Section in this competition will become the Alabama High

School chess champion, and will go on to represent Alabama in a national tour-

nament o High School champions.

Our very own chess master, Dr. Varagona, is acting as a liaison to the

Alabama Chess Federation, who are handling the running o the event. He may

also be providing commentary to the matches, which is sure to give us rare in-

sight into the mind o a master.

For those interested in chess, Dr. Varagonas chess club meets

Wednesdays rom 7:30-11:00 p.m. in Hill House. Te club welcomes players o

all skill levels.

President Susan Sabia isa senior rom Scottsboro,AL. She is a Speech-Language Pathology major, her pri-mary career goal is to become a medical speechpathologist, but she also wants to dabble in researchingthe speech and hearing sciences in the ar uture. She

HNRS 308-002: Bring Stories to Lie: Oral Histories

Te purpose o this course is to introduce students to oral histories rom both the research perspective

and the archivist perspective. Students will receive a brie overview o orality and oral history research,

recording, and use. Te course will culminate in students conducting, recording, and transcribing

their own oral history projects.

HNRS 308-003: Politics o Inormation1 Credit W 9-9:50 Dr. Battista & L. Wallis HH

Who creates inormation? What inormation gets createdand what inormation does not? Who hasaccess to inormation, and how can the dissemination inormation be an instrument o social control,inside and outside o the academy? Tis course on the Politics o Inormation encourages students to

ask these questions in terms o inormation and its implications on gender or race identity and classstratifcation. As students analyze current and historical events related to inormation access, they will

practice research and critical thinking skills such as developing and refning a research question, fnd-ing and evaluating the best print and digital resources, and articulating ethical issues related to con-suming inormation. Further, students will understand how the economics o scholarly publishing

and inormation circulation aects their own education. Students will gain concrete research skills andan enhanced understanding o the theoretical issues related to accessing inormation both or scholar-ly research and in daily lie.

National Parks: Wilderness, Conservation, and Public Lands in the American Experience

Writer and historian Wallace Stegner called national parks "the best idea we ever had. AbsolutelyAmerican, absolutely democratic, they reect us at our best rather than our worst." Tis course will

explore the history, philosophy, and value o the national parks idea. While millions o Americansenjoy the national parks every year, ew are aware o bitter controversies surrounding them, such as

the historic ooding o Yosemite National Parks once beautiul Hetch Hetchy Valley to provide a wa-ter reservoir or San Francisco, or the reintroduction o wolves to Yellowstone National Park in the1990s, popular with tourists but resented by ranchers whose livestock are threatened by the predators.Like other great American ideas, the national parks are the subject o conicting interests and continu-ing debate a debate that helps to defne who we are as a people. Te National Parks course will help

to inorm that debate by invited students to reect upon the competing values and interests at theheart o Americas Best Idea.

Non-prot Organizations: Overview, Operation, and Sustainability

Tis course provides an overview o the non-proft sector in the United States. Te historical evolu-tion o this sector will be examined along with its legal, political, social and economic dimensions.Case studies o representative non-proft organizations will be used. Next, social entrepreneurship will

be presented as a process or ormation o non-proft organizations to create social beneft. Ten, Tesuccessul operation o non-proft organizations will be examined in terms o organizational, manage-ment, and leadership principles. Finally, sustainability will be addressed in terms o both creating sus-

tainable non-proft organizations and using these to create sustainable social change. Continuing casestudies throughout the semester will ocus on the creation and operation o environmental organiza-tions to address national and global environmental sustainability issues.

With a new director comes some changesBy Jacob Bobst; Honors Student

Were all excited to meet our new Honors Director, Dr. Cathlena Martin. But someo you are undoubtedly wondering whats going to change under her reign.

Well, or one, Dr. Martin hopes to add more General Education courses to the

Honors Program, and she is currently working on adding Math 155, Nature oMathematics, as an Honors-only course.

Also, she hopes to replace the AC-based entrance requirement with a

membership application.Tere are a lot o amazing students at UM that are o Honors quality that just didnthave that 27 on an AC, she said

In addition, shes adding some small changes to Hill House, such as introducing apopcorn machine and a new V in the living room. She also has a number o trips tocultural events in the Birmingham area lined up, with a tour o the Birmingham Mu-seum o Art coming up next. Any updates on the events can be ound on the Face-
