Aisha works with
the Bonner
Program on our
campus. Through
the Bonner
Program she was
placed with the
American Friends Service Committee
(AFSC) Prison Watch Project* which
focuses primarily on the various
injustices of the American prison system
and treatment of prisoners within its
confines.
The work I do in collaboration with the
director of the organization involves
inquiring about individuals being held in
solitary confinement as well as
engaging in debate revolving around
oppression, racism, sexism, political
relations, isolation, and abuse within
the various prison complexes through-
out the United and throughout the
world. Our focus ranges from the above
mentioned activities in addition to
working to end inhumane treatment of
prisoners in solitary confinement,
during which they maybe subject to “no
touch” torture, inhumane “regimens”,
and various other forms of
dehumanizing acts for days, months, or
even years. My work involves engaging
in political discourse as well as
reviewing and responding to letters sent
to the office by those who are currently
incarcerated (often detailing the
wretched conditions in which they are
being kept). It is in collaboration with
the AFSC that I continue to study the
multiple faults and authorized brutality
within the United States criminal justice
system.

Oral Histories Project: An Honors Course Highlight
Since the Fall of
2013, some Honors
College students
have enrolled in an
Oral Histories
project for Prisoner
Reform as part of a
course offered by the
department of Arts, Culture & Culture
and the School of Criminal Justice.
The course is taught by Dr. Bonita
Veysey and Professor Tim Raphael. In
phase 1 of the seminar, students read
books on the stigma ex-offenders face
upon re-entering society and
conducted interviews with individuals
who finished serving their prison
sentences. In phase II, we were to take
what we learned from the previous
semester and participate in writing a
piece for the literary magazine,
Hycide, create a theater piece, or
develop an advocacy campaign. I am a
member of the group that chose to
develop an advocacy campaign for the
New York state parole reform system.
Our objective is to change the
perception that the general public has
about ex-offenders. We want to
encourage everyone not to judge ex-
offenders solely by their past but
rather consider that they are seeking
to change
their lives for
the better.
With this
campaign, we
are hoping
to create
awareness
that
ex-offenders
shouldn't be
solely looked down upon and judged
because of the mistakes they made in
the past. They are fathers, mothers,
sons and daughters who made
mistakes and they need the public’s
perception to be transformed in order
to help them to reintegrate into
society and become productive
citizens. —
Honors College student Penafrancia Malcampo discusses her ongoing work in her Oral Histories
course which revolves around prisoner reform
“We want to
encourage everyone
not to judge ex-
offenders solely by
their past but rather
consider that they
are seeking to
change their lives for
the better.”—
