We caught up with Bryce at Aura Skateboarding Training Facility in Vista, CA to see her skateboarding skills in

action and ask her a few questions. Here is what she had to say:

How has living in North County affected your skating career? North County San Diego, especially Encinitas, is kind of the epicenter for vert-skateboarding, and a lot of legends and current pros live and train right here! It’s a treat we don’t take for granted that every time we go to our local Magdalena Ecke YMCA Encinitas skatepark, there are several pros there practicing and not only can you watch and learn, but you can skate with them and they’re all so nice! We get to skate with legends like female skating pioneer Cara-Beth Burnside, Bones Brigade member Mike McGill, and Andy Macdonald almost on a weekly basis! Lastly, there are plenty of parks to skate locally, and they’re building several more right now!

Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? Local North-County: Mike McGill and his namesake skateshop located right here in downtown Encinitas. I go tothe same school as his kids, we skate the same park, he always is encouraging and invites meto skate demos with him and the McGill’s skate team. Next for sure is Aura Skateboarding andfounder Jim Bell. Jim built our backyard skatebowl and before that, our mini-ramp, and heinvited me to be on his skate team. Now I get to skate Aura’s new indoor facility any time Iwant and it’s a great place to learn. The local Magdalena Ecke YMCA skatepark staff is veryencouraging too and always makes me feel at home when we skate there, and they have funcontests for all the locals. Lastly I can’t forget Encinitas-local Cara-Beth Burnside as she is alwaysnice and encouraging and even invites me over to skate her backyard mini-ramp (also built by Jim Bell).

Any advice to parents out there who are hesitant to let their 8 year old jump on a skateboard & drop in from 10 feet?

Skateboarding will keep them playing outside and meeting other cool kids. Just wear all your pads and your helmet and you will be okay even when you fall! All the kids I know seem to bounce right back up and get back on their board to try again! Nobody usually drops in the deepend their first day, so drop-in on a mini-ramp first and work your way up! My dad always spots me when I’m first learning and we get to spend a lot of time together because of skateboarding and surfing!Interesting Fact: Bryce has her own custom skate park in her back yard, it’s called the‘Iguana Bowl’ built by Jim Bell of Aura Skateboarding and it’s famous among the North Countyskateboarding community.Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? I see myself still skatingeverything – all terrain but mostly focused on pools and bowls, and using skateboarding ascross-training tool for surfing! I still plan to compete in skating but my focus will eventuallyshift more towards competing in surfing. But no matter what I always want to be a Silly Girl!What’s your favorite afterschool snack? Pirate Booty, a Mother’s chocolate chip cookiefrom Jimbo’s or Cutie oranges.Do you get nervous before every competition? If so, what do you do to relax and calm your nerves? I do get nervous, but I also get more excited than nervous. I want to do my best and not fall during my run, but contests are also so fun because all my skate friends are there, and the Silly Girl teammates, my family, and the music always pumps me up. I’m too young to meditate my Dad says, but I do go into some sort of zone during my contest runs and I’m not sure how I learned to do that, but it works for me. Skating and surfing in contest heats is one of the best feelings in the world for me, especially when I make the finals!What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to

skateboard? You’re never too young to learn and never too old either. Don’t be scaredbecause it is so fun, just wear your pads at first. Your mom and dad will be happy that you’reoutside playing instead of inside playing a video game. Go to McGill’s skateshop and they willhook you up with the best set-up for you!

Melinda...“I’ve actually never been to a 3D movie before, and I was quite impressed! Fora “kid’s movie” Finding Nemo is definitely one of my favorites, but seeing it really come alive on the screen was amazing! The underwater setting and bright, vibrant colors of the fish and other underwater creatures was beautiful. Watching the fish literally swim right up to us was very realistic and definitely added a whole new element to the movie! The experience as a whole was very easy and fun. The staff was friendly and the theater was very clean…and didn’t

Jacob Cervantes is like most 17 year olds. He loves spending time with friends, playing football, learning about video cameras and noodling with computers. But when school ends at 3 o’clock, life for Jacob takes on a very different look from your average high-schooler. By 3:30 he has driven all the way from his home in Otay Ranch to the Rock Church, where he will spend the next 3-5 hours volunteering his time to Rock’s Production Arts. Jacob is just one of the hundreds who volunteer at the Rock Church. In 2011, Rock Church volunteers contributed more than 235,000 hours to the City of San Diego, saving the city an estimated $4 million dollars. It is volunteers like Jacob, who help spread pervasive hope through his time, effort and dedication to inspiring others. When Jacob was 13, he applied to run a camera for the Rock

services. He was given the chance to man a stationary camera—but his level of skill and eagerness to learn caught the eye of Doug Mote, the Rock’s Technical Arts Director.

He was quickly given the chance to learn the highly complex jib camera and Jacob took full command.He now covers for the main jib operator at all Rock’s services and has become so proficient that he has been given the responsibility to run the jib for many high profile acts such as comedian, Tim Hawkins, and musical artists, Hillsong and Toby Mac. His

talents and devotion to the Rock have caught the eyeof nearly everyone associated with production. He is

now head of production for EPIC, the high school ministry at the Rock Church, arriving four hours early just to set up. He shoots and directs all the Rock student videos including the My Stories, which have garnered a viral following. He also helped film Rock News segments for much of the 2012 Vision video. He also donates his time to the Rock’s IT department, cleaning out computers and installing new software for the Rock Academy. Outside of the Rock Church, Jacob is on staff at KUSI in their sports department.

This recipe is so easy a seven year old can make it! You don’t need yeast,a refrigerator, or even a pizza stone!

Ingredients:1 ! cup flour1 tbsp. baking powder! tsp. salt! cup water2 tbsp. olive oil10 tbsps. pizza sauce6 handfuls of shredded cheese(mozzarella is best!)Your favorite toppings!(pepperoni, basil, green peppers,sliced tomatoes, olives, mushrooms)

Directions:Preheat oven to 450 degrees.Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix.Then make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.Add the water and olive oil to the well and stir for a minute or two.Then, with clean hands, start kneading the dough for 5-7 minutes.Place dough on a floured board and roll out with a rolling pin.Spray cooking spray on a cookie sheet.Spread out dough on cookie sheet.Spread spoonfuls of pizza sauce on dough.Add the cheese and decorate with your favorite toppings.Place cookie sheet in the oven and cook for 12-15 minutes.

Want an even easier pizza? Try using English muffins, pita bread, or Indian nan breadas your base and cook on 425 degrees for 7-10 minutes.
