HOW CAN LYMPHATIC ACTIVATION HELP YOU? The lymphatic system is the body's sewage system for dumping dead cells, viruses, bacteria and foreign debris the body produces each day.

The body has lymph vessels through the entire body that carry this debris to the lymph nodes in the inguinal area, arm-

pits, breast, face, stomach and smaller lymph nodes.

The debris then dumps into the intestines. When the body develops illness, constipation, diarrhea or trauma, this impedes elimination, as do various medications.

Headaches, sinus or gallbladder problems, pain in the legs or arms and many other ailments could just be a blocked system.

If your doctor cannot find a problem and you know something is just not right, give Terry a call!

Dear Friend, Insights, ah-ha moments, going into the zone... They’re all considered part of the process of “metaphysics”. But where does this knowledge come

from? For 16 years I have written about self-help and spirituality. A woman recently asked me how I know about these topics. At first, I was stumped. I don’t know. I read a lot, but that’s not it. I think it is more along the lines of Aristotle’s belief that educators should teach not by putting information into students’ heads, but by teaching them to bring down the information—because it’s there for all of us to access. Mostly, I share what I have learned on my path. I believe in the power of sharing our stories—how our strengths, our weaknesses, our vulner-abilities and our joy can help others through example. Even though my training comes from within, I believe exposing my fears and imperfections can help others on a similar path. Elizabeth Kubler Ross once said that she would like to come back in her next life and write a book titled, I’m Not Okay, You’re Not Okay, But it’s Okay. I like it. Our imperfections are what make us so endearing. The title of EVOLVING encompasses those imperfections: We’re all evolving. We’re not “there”, but are in process. It is a journey that thrills me—the lessons, loves, hurts and those moments of “ah ha” that all make life so stimulating. Please enjoy our annual issue on metaphysics and all it encompasses.

Jesus

By Robin Landry Tricia McCannon not only writes a scholarly book of the birth, life and death of Jesus, she writes in a clear and easy to under-stand way that makes this book as suspenseful as any work of fiction. She brings Jesus, the man, to life. She shows that Jesus was human, that he worked at his knowledge visiting Egypt, England, India and Tibet, learning from the greatest minds of his time. That he didn't just come into this world knowing all things, though he was one of the four great Kumaras, the solar lords, the eternally young sons of God who “realized the truth of self”, he did his homework. McCannon's view of Jesus, heavily researched, is a thousand times more interesting than the whitewashed version of Jesus that portrays him as the son of God who was born of a virgin, knew everything, could do no wrong, and was killed for our sins. In-stead, we see a human being who studied and earned his powers showing us the way to the prom-ised land.

Filled with illustrations, foot-notes from works found in the Vatican that not many people get to see, oral traditions, and so many other books that I don't see how it was humanly possible to read, McCannon not only offers us an incredible look at Jesus, she backs it up. Simply an amazing work.

Your Place in the World

By Linda Salisbury Hundreds of books have been written about the search for self. The inclusion of a unique compo-nent makes Your Place in the World a standout in the genre. According to author Tom Ander-son, it is not enough to simply discover self or to grow as a per-son—it is essential to have a vi-sion and a purpose, and to see how they lead to individual ser-vice in the world. Service is an element lacking in most self-discovery books, but Anderson writes, “Without action steps, our vision remains just a dream, our purpose is wasted, and those we are meant to serve don’t receive our blessing.”

Anderson takes a twofold ap-proach in his inspirational ac-count of self-discovery. He blends his own experience of finding vi-sion and purpose in his life through a vision quest (a life-altering spiritual retreat) with actions of mythic heroes.

Anderson was so successful in his business career that he was offered a partnership in his firm, but he ached for something more fulfilling. He undertook his vision quest because he yearned for something more from life. Like the mythic heroes of yore, he set off on a “journey.”

His hero analogy, which can be easily related to contemporary life, is divided into stages of the hero’s journey (found in myth and literature): the hero answers a call, leaves the comforts of home and family and goes on a journey, perhaps seeking a “boon,” such as a sword or grail that he must bring back to his community. There are tribula-tions, danger, and perhaps de-spair along the way, and finally the hero returns home (perhaps to leave again).

Anderson says that everyone is the hero in his or her own life, but it’s not enough to be called to take the journey. Being in touch

with one’s soul should lead to service when one finds out what he was born to do. “Our vision and purpose are intrinsically linked to the way we are to serve in the world,” Anderson writes. He adds that this service “will be found at the intersection of our heartache and our bliss.”

The exercises included at the end of each chapter are helpful, especially for readers who are physically unable to have a vision quest in a desert or in the moun-tains as the author did. Anderson now serves as a vision quest guide and offers workshops. He encourages journaling, becoming inspired by the natural world, and sorting out “soul,” “ego,” and “spirit.”

The process of self-discovery is not just self-serving; although individuals will be happier about their lives as they take the jour-ney, ultimately, the world will benefit. “As we come to under-stand our vision, we will also come to see how we are bound to the earth,” Anderson writes. “Is it any wonder we are feeling this inner yearning at a time when the earth so desperately needs us to find a deeper understanding about how we are all connected?” His book eloquently guides read-ers to that goal.

By ChristiElla Merrick The invitation to participate in this August workshop came to me by my dear friend Con-nie Humiston. Even though we did not partner up during the workshop, our personal connec-tion was deepened by sharing this experience. I am ever so grateful for that. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Laurel Clark of the School of Metaphysics. She pre-sented the material in a clear, concise and straight-forward manner. We were given a course handout of reference sheets, outline of the course, written exercises, etc. This has been a valuable tool for me since. After each lectured segment, Dr. Clark en-couraged questions or insights that we might have. Then the next step was to utilize a dy-namic tool to integrate the teachings on an-other level. It was in this step that I personally learned the most. These tools are very effective and simple techniques that you can use in your daily life. One simple and revealing exercise was to write a list of 10 different people who have in-spired you and the quality that you saw in them. This list could be friends, celebrities, ath-letes, etc. After we created the list we rated our-selves from 1-10; where we felt we were with these qualities. This process was very interest-ing. I found myself giving low to medium num-bers on them. This tool is a good reference point on what qualities matter in your life, where you are with them and where you may want to improve. Another exercise seemed simple enough; yet, I had a lot of difficulty with it.

This was a group exercise with everyone at the table. Each person wrote a sentence that was a story. The person read it first and the person sitting next to him/her would repeat exactly what the sentence was, and it would go around the table until everyone repeated it cor-rectly. Sound simple? Give it a try and see what happens. It was amazing to hear what other people thought they heard and actually what was said, and some of things that were repeated created a lot of laughter. When it came to my turn to listen and re-peat the sentence, I noticed how tense I got and I tried really hard to get it right the first time. That did not happen. I needed to have the sentence repeated many times before I got it right. My ego was getting a real lesson on how to listen. I noticed how much my own mind-chatter interferes when someone else is speaking. The teaching of this exercise was about my attention span on focusing on the details. I un-derstood the concept of the sentence; yet, I did not remember some of the details. This can lead to a lot of misunderstandings. Throughout the day, we partnered into groups of two, then four or more, and during lunch we all gathered at large tables in groups of at least 10 people. This exercise was very re-laxing, informal and profound. We all shared why we came to the workshop and all agreed that communication is the key to any fulfilling relationship with others and ourselves. This was a fascinating and enlightening exercise where I became more aware how people’s com-munication skills become developed through their life experiences.

Even though these exercises were structured to be done with others and to deepen our con-nection with people, I found that I made a much deeper connection within myself and a new sense of freedom has emerged since. Results and Reflection The results that I am finding are being more present with others, listening deeper and speaking more clearly what I have to share. I tend to ask more questions now so I can get a clearer picture of what is being communicated. My friends have noticed a change and shift in how I communicate since the class, and with the results they have noticed with me, they are expressing a desire to attend this seminar. I highly recommend when you are in the process of forming a partnership, team, group or any project that you participate in this class. This course is a wonderful opportunity to learn and expand on basic communication skills and develop them into an art.

On Friday October 1st, VALA gallery in Mis-sion, KS, will join forces with the MS Society on order to raise awareness about the disease and bring hope to others who are living with it. Vis-ual artist Jean Van Harlingen and singer/songwriter Beth Scalet will bring a combined powerhouse of talent to the gallery. Both artists are living with the disease but refuse to let it de-fine them. Their goal for the night is to provide living proof that having a diagnosis does not end your life or what you love to do.

“Futuristic Quest” A show highlighting Jean’s recent interest in digital art and media is a natu-ral progression of her earlier works. This new experiment in digital art is unique in that these pieces are completely digital in origin and do not exist in any other form of media. Opening starts @ 6:30 pm. Music provided by Beth Scalet and Kathryn Lorenzen. Ten percent of concert and show profits go directly to the MS Society.

But Where Do You Get Your Protein?

By Bethany Klug The most common question patients ask when I advise them to eat more plant foods and less animal foods, like beef, pork and milk products is, “But where will I get my protein?” “From plants,” I reply. “Where do you think the cow got it in the first place? Cows don’t develop big muscles by eat-ing meat. They develop them from eat-ing grass. We’re no different.” The focus on protein is misplaced. We are asking the wrong question. Why? Our body doesn’t use protein to make protein. It uses amino acids to make protein. Our body makes amino acids from carbohydrates and other amino acids, except for eight to ten so called “essential” amino acids that we must get from food. It was once thought that we needed to eat animal foods because they contain all of the essential amino acids in adequate quantity. Yet, in one study where the participants ate only corn, all the amino acid needs were met except one, and 91 percent of its requirement was met. In another study where the participants ate only rice, amino acid needs not only were met but were 1.5 – 4.5 times the requirement. We now un-derstand that our essential amino acid needs are well met by eating a variety of plant foods. This has been the position of the American Dietetics Association since at least 1988. Plants are a better way to get amino acids for many reasons:

♦ Plants are high in fiber. Animal foods contain no fiber.

♦ Most plants are naturally low in fat.

♦ Plants contain no cholesterol and contain plant sterols which can re-duce cholesterol levels. All animal foods contain cholesterol.

♦ Plants contain phytochemicals which protect against oxidative damage, reduce inflammation, kill cancer cells, and improve the liver’s detoxification ability. Animal foods do not.

♦ Plants provide calcium.

♦ Plant protein appears to protect kidney function. However, protein intake above 20 percent of calories, whether plant or animal in source, can damage the kidneys.

We really don’t know how much pro-tein a human being needs. Different sources quote different amounts, which have been steadily lowered since Recom-mended Daily Allowances were estab-lished early last century. A common value these days is 0.23 grams per

pound (0.5 grams per kilogram) of body weight for most people and 0.34 grams per pound (0.75 grams per kilogram) of body weight for athletes. Other sources say more, others less, and many studies are inconclusive. According to the above figures, a 120-pound person needs 28 grams of pro-tein. Let's use the old adage of 3 ounces as a serving of meat. Here's how much protein you get: 3 ounces of roasted chicken contains 24 grams, 3 ounces of salmon contains 23 grams and 3 ounces of T-bone steak contains 20 grams. Now let's compare that to some common plant foods: One cup of cooked lentils contains 18 grams of protein, 4 ounces of tempeh contains 16 grams, ¼ cup of almonds, sunflower or pumpkin seeds contain 8 grams, one cup of broccoli or spinach contains 5 grams, ½ cup of cooked oats or brown rice contains about 3 grams. Do the math. It’s easy to get enough protein from plants. Also consider that it’s a rare person who eats only 3 ounces of meat daily. It’s easy to get too much protein and miss the health benefits of plants by eating customary amounts of animal foods. So don’t worry about protein. Instead, eat a variety of whole, unprocessed foods, mostly from plants, and let your body do the rest.

journey to wholeness

By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. “…suffering is an essential part of the human condition, one of the engines of human development. The unavoidable mysteries of pain and suffering can give

rise to hidden resources of compassion and creativity.” —Polly Young-Eisendrath; The Resilient Spirit: Transforming Suffering into Insight and Renewal

The themes of civilization on the topic of suffering cluster around two very differ-

ent perspectives of life. One theme focuses on eliminating suffering, focusing on some state of eternal happiness or contentment. This usually includes getting rid of our "earthly desires." In this view of life there is often a child-like attitude needing control and desiring perfection, seeing the Higher Power as the eternal parent. Another theme looks at suffering as a catalyst; the fuel for our personal growth

and development in positive ways. In this view suffering is considered an unavoid-able and integral part of life. The goal is to face suffering, figure out how to deal with it, learn from it and take the energy forward in creative ways. Today’s psychotherapy approaches mirror these two historical themes. There are

approaches that focus, almost exclusively, on one’s history without any tools or strategies to help one understand how to change the painful experiences into a posi-tive expression. Some have a singular focus on identifying and expressing emotions with no strategies for change. Some approaches rely totally on cognitive and behav-ioral changes with little attention paid to the holistic reality of the person emotion-ally, physically and spiritually. The advent of psychotropic drugs has become, for many, the great cure-all, which

represses symptoms by turning off different functions of the brain and artificially controlling the neurochemical balance. The problem is that if the person does not learn to re-frame the pain in a healthier perspective and learn tools for living differ-

ently, the brain goes back to old patterns, even with the medication. Research agrees that medication without psychotherapy is not effective. Together the result is very positive. Many popular writers like M. Scott Peck in the Road Less Traveled, Eckhart Tolle

in The Power of Now and The New Earth have focused on the belief that suffering is an essential part of life. We can choose to use it as a springboard to positive change. A concept in Buddhism which follows this theme is “changing poison into medi-cine.” Accepting suffering as a given, one can learn to turn any obstacle into a source of benefit. We do not know our courage until we meet fear. Adversity pushes us to ask, “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?” Viktor Frankl found his hope and pur-pose in the suffering of the concentration camp and carried it forward into a life of great commitment to help relieve the suffering of others. I read the experience of a young man who experienced sexual molestation, crime, poverty and depression. He states, “The anger, pain and indignation that I felt in my heart was not a product of my environment, but my own creation. It was the fuel I needed to uncover my sense of purpose: the fuel I needed to create joy.” He was able to continue his education, earn a degree in counseling and now works with inner city youth. (Michael Butros; Living Buddhism, 8/1/2003) Facing suffering with courage puts you in the driver’s seat. I hope you find tools and strategies to assist you in turning "poison into medicine" and "suffering into treasure."

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 13 October 2010

By Nancy Russell, M.D. Could it be fibromyalgia? Do you suffer from tiredness, aching all over and exhaustion? Do you have non-restful or interrupted sleep? Do you have decreased mental clarity, de-creased sex drive and get more than your fair share of infections? If you an-swered yes to all of these questions, you may have a condition know as fi-bromyalgia. Fibromyalgia can cause a baffling array of symptoms and is fre-quently misdiagnosed or even dismissed by physicians. Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal and sleep disorder that cannot be diag-nosed with any specific blood test or laboratory testing. It is diagnosed by criteria set forth by the American Col-lege of Rheumatology: 1. Widespread pain or achiness, steady or intermittent, for at least three months, on both sides of the body and upper and lower body. And, 2. Pain on pressing at least 11 of 18 spots on the body known as tender points. Other associated problems can be: irritable bowel syndrome, low sex drive, insomia, nausea, memory problems, headaches, depression, nervousness, hair loss, numbness/tingling, post-exertion malaise and chronic sinus, bladder or prostate infections. In my experience with diagnosing and treating people with fibromyalgia, I have had success in helping them get better using a researched protocol by Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D. A good resource for someone with fibromyalgia is Dr. Teitelbaum’s book, From Fatigued to Fantastic, 3rd edition. He discusses one of the theories why fibromyalgia may occur: hypothalamus dysfunction in the brain. Some known triggers for this to happen are: a major stressful event or a series of stressful events such as a viral infection, automobile accident, preg-nancy, recurrent infections, death of a loved one, and toxic or chemical expo-sures. The program to getting better is initi-ated with the S-H-I-N-E protocol. This five-step protocol begins with sleep! Getting a restful, uninterrupted 7-9 hours of sleep is the foundation of get-ting well. A combination of natural and prescription sleep aids may be necessary to achieve this goal. If this sleep goal is not met, and particularly if high blood pressure is also present, an overnight sleep study with a sleep specialist is a must. H is for hormone balance and sup-port. Due to the hypothalamus gland in the brain being affected, that in turn can

produce problems with all the endocrine glands. The result can be low level func-tioning of the thyroid gland as well as the adrenal and sex glands. These glan-dular systems can be supported with natural or prescription support. I is for infections and inflamma-tion. Because of the immune system being less than optimal with this illness, it is not uncommon to see either recur-rent or frequent infections. These are commonly sinus, bladder, prostate or lung infections. When treated with many rounds of antibiotics, this can lead to other infections like yeast or candida or super infections. Appropriate treat-ment is based on laboratory testing. N is for Nutrition. Nutritional defi-ciencies are common due to poor diet and/or not absorbing food in the intes-tine efficiently. The most common defi-ciencies are vitamin D, vitamin B-12 and magnesium. High doses of these nutri-ents may be necessary and sometimes injectable nutrients are recommended. E is for Exercise. Even though strenu-ous exercise generally can make symp-toms worse, many of my patients report good results with stretching exercises, yoga, pilates, swimming or water aero-bics. Start out with only 5 - 10 minutes a day and very gradually increase. In your pursuit to improve your health, I highly recommend the organi-zation, Fibromyalgia Coalition Interna-tional and its local support groups. They are the nation’s most active organization dedicated to the belief that Fibromyalgia is reversible. For more information, go to their website: www.fibrocoalition.org or call them locally at 913-384-HOPE (4673). Dr. Nancy Russell is excited to assist people with fibromyalgia on their jour-ney to better health. If you would like to call her office, she can send you a ques-tionnaire to fill out to see if you meet the

fibromyalgia criteria and make an appointment for an initial consultation

visit at 816-453-5545. Nancy Russell, M.D. is a holistic

Internal medicine physician and has practiced in the Kansas City northland for 28 years. Dr. Russell blends tradi-tional and alternative medicine in her holistic medical practice. Holistic medi-cine is also about getting to know each person as an individual, getting to the root of the problem and having a part-nership between physician and patient. By Jayana DeWolf You would not expect to find toads, leaches, and plant-based tinctures at Walgreens; however, the prescription and over-the-counter drugs are actually syn-thetic and chemically-enhanced repro-ductions of ancient earth-based medi-cines. Why don’t we see holistic remedies in pharmacies? Simple—insurance compa-nies cover the pill, not the plant. Corpora-tions can’t make a profit off a plant so they pay top dollar to make sure they receive the support they need in their attempt to control the healthcare system. In 2004, Rob Amerine was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. This brought him face-to-face with the affects of corpo-rate funding and political agendas. He was incensed to learn his wellness op-tions were limited to paying out of pocket for holistic remedies or receiving insur-ance coverage for synthetic solutions. He researched the issue and found this injus-tice affected many diseases and condi-tions: arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and paralysis. In 2006, Rob retired from a forty-year career as a middle school political science and socials study teacher. He began to focus his attention on his health and the issue of government and corporate health benefit controls. His mission is to ease pain and suffering by making natural methods a viable option. He has dedi-cated the last few years to educating the public and has become an activist when-ever he finds a situation where politics encroaches on a person’s right to heal in peace. During his research of the relationship between political decisions and disease benefits, he found, in almost every in-stance, bills to allow proven natural me-dicinal remedies were vetoed after large political donations were made by the corporations who would suffer a profit loss. Driven to create change, he joined NORML and has recently participated in forming a grass-roots group, “Move to Amend,” dedicated to reforming the amount of political funding large corpo-rations are allowed. A few years ago, while participating in a local farmer’s economic revitalization effort, Rob came across Bee Venom Ther-apy (BVT). After extensive research on the topic, he found that bee venom con-tains numerous healing agents and is a more productive treatment than any pharmaceutical on the market for over five-hundred different diseases and ill-nesses, including arthritis, MS, and Park-inson’s. After taking a course on bee-keeping and thoroughly researching BVT, Rob decided to put his educational back-ground to good use once again. Donning a bee costume, he now attends health fairs throughout Kansas City, and teaches people about BVT.

The most difficult part of his work is the sting. There are plenty of ways to relieve the initial pain and itching, but the fact remains, people don’t like getting stung because it hurts. Rob points out that the benefit far outweighs the pain and shares the story of a man who was in a wheelchair with MS. Within a year of starting BVT the man was walking with a cane, driving a car and felt like a produc-tive person again. Another concern is an allergic reac-tion. Rob is quick to point out the differ-ence between a true allergic reaction and a topical reaction. A topical reaction is redness, itching, discomfort or pain. A true allergic reaction is anaphylactic shock, where the individual experiences severe life-threatening symptoms such as airway constriction and lowered blood pressure. Anaphylactic shock can be caused by a natural intolerance to the bee venom or drug and food interactions. For this reason, Rob carries an epinephrine auto-injector (Epi pen) and is diligent in providing ample education on how to handle and avoid both types of reactions before treatment begins. Rob is a teacher, a champion, and a healer. He uses his knowledge to educate others. He fights for what he believes in and for the rights of others. He is a mas-ter of various therapeutic techniques such as Rieki, BVT, and counseling; he uses these to soothe pain wherever he can. He is not in the business of getting rich. He is in the business of living his life in a way in which the lives of others are enriched. Blessed Bee.

Musical Icon Tina Turner, Dechen Shak-Dagsay & Regula Curti Explore Spiritual Unity Through Music in a

New CD Set. "Bringing together corresponding pieces from Christian and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, as has been done with BEYOND, will allow listeners to share in these prayers, stirring thoughts of deeper respect

and peace in their lives." ~His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama

New Earth Records announces the release of BEYOND: Buddhist and Christian Prayers ($18.99), a new recording of Buddhist and Christian prayers and chants featuring Tina Turner with Dechen Shak-Dagsay and Regula Curti slated for release on September 14th. The first spiritual recording made by Turner, BEYOND is a warm, inspiring invitation to go “beyond” religious differences through music. “Tina is not just a singer, she is a shamanic force. Her message of one-ness, her call to overcome our fears, listen to each other and sing, regard-less of our faith or beliefs beckons us to explore spiritual unity through these universal sacred chants and prayers,” says Waduda Paradiso, co-founder of New Earth Records. She adds, “We are thrilled to work with Tina and with these amazing woman as the message of BEYOND parallels our personal philosophy at New Earth Records.” Endorsed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the Abbot Martin Welen Osb, head of the Benedictine Monastery in Einsiedeln, Switzer-land, The collaboration features mu-sic of Buddhist prayers, composed by Dechen Shak-Dagsay, a Tibetan Bud-dhist; traditional music and original compositions of Christian prayers by Regula Curti, a Christian; as well as chanting and readings by Tina Turner, a practicing Buddhist. “With the BEYOND project I’m glad to add my personal chants as an offering to the world to share a mes-sage of Oneness through music and prayer that goes beyond religious differences and helps bring humanity together.” Tina, who contributed both spoken interludes and chanting, says “I turned to Buddhism in my bad times. When I needed help I started

the practice, and I was motivated be-cause the practice worked for me, and I've continued to do it because, up until now, it has supported me. And that's the motivation, when some-thing works. I will spread this word to everyone because that is a part of what Buddhism is, is to pass it on in order for people to help themselves.” Tina, Regula and Dechen hope to launch a global movement with the BEYOND PROJECT, inspiring peo-ple of all faiths to practice and sing their prayers together. The singers share, “We experience the power of deep spirituality whenever we chant together although each person is praying in his own tradition… to share our wonderful experience of connecting hearts and this great sense of oneness with as many people as possible... Singing takes you be-yond right and wrong to a place where love and compassion grow." The artists are already collaborating on a second CD. All the artist proceeds from the recording will go towards supporting three non-profit organizations affili-ated with the artists with a focus on the welfare of children. BEYOND comes with a 36 page collector’s booklet , features 15 tracks (71 min-utes) and is packaged with eco-friendly materials including 100% post-consumer recycled paper using only soy and vegetable inks and bio-degradable shrink wrap.

BEYOND is available at www.newearthrecords.com,

www.amazon.com, Itunes.com and with various retail outlets nationwide.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 16 October 2010

I lay on the table in Ursula’s treatment room, now most of the way through chemo round number five, with the last round just around the corner, right before

my trip to the Flint Hills for the long-awaited Continental Bioregional Congress I was helping organize. Ursula Gilkeson was the energy healer I worked with throughout my chemo-therapy and surgeries. I would be done by that time, and I could stop shaving my head, which grew only sparse, black fuzz toward the end of each chemo cycle. All summer I had been drag-ging the razor carefully over my head once a week, getting rid of my five-o’clock shadow be-fore applying a new round of temporary tattoos. Today, I was wearing a tattoo collection from the hit parade, one everyone liked: birds. I had a cardinal, blue jay, hawk, eagle, dove, junco and a few others I couldn’t identify pasted care-fully in a garland around my nice round head. I closed my eyes, counting the days until my final chemo session, until the Congress, until I would be growing hair and giving up shaving, until I would be normal again. Ursula started with my feet as usual, holding my toes, breathing. I relaxed slightly, but kept counting. Eleven days until the final big infu-sion. Eighteen days until the final little infu-sion. Twenty-one days until the congress. She walked to the other end of the table and placed her hands on my forehead. I breathed with her. My head hurt and so did my stomach. I was tired, exhausted actually; there was still so much to do after chemo—more surgery and re-covery, and what else? I didn’t know what else, because I started seeing birds. Maybe I imagined them, maybe not. A red-winged blackbird over my forehead. Two tired and scared doves for my breasts. Herons and bluebirds and crows. An owl in my throat, asleep. The bluebirds in my clavicle area, near the chemo port. And the red-winged blackbird by my forehead. All the birds there to help me. I heard bird song from outside, and felt the presence of birds all over my body, quiet creatures perched on the branches of my being.

Then I thought of my mother, and how hard it must be for her to know I had this cancer. I imagined reassuring her, but to my surprise, I felt a sudden flood of joy and acceptance of anything, even death. Death, which I’d always been scared to even think about, suddenly seemed utterly exciting, mysterious, beautiful even. It would be an adventure of a proportion beyond our trip to Africa, where Ken and I had traveled in the mid-1980s. I had never felt any-thing like this before, and I had no words to contain the thrill of it. But death wasn’t what I wanted. In my mind, I said, over and over, “I choose life.” And just to make it utterly clear, “I choose a long, long life.” Afterwards, I sat up and moved to the white chair opposite Ursula to talk about what hap-pened. “I saw birds,” I told her, “all over me.” She smiled. It turned out that she had been remembering a song, hearing the tune in her mind when she worked on me, that she had learned in Germany about the little bird sitting at my foot, carrying greetings from its mother. She sang me the German version softly, her blue eyes shining, and then told me the transla-tion: A lost bird. A bird trying to return to her mother.

That night, I overheard Daniel, then 12, and Forest, just six, talking in their bedroom across the hall from ours. “God sees everything,” said Daniel. “Are you sure?” asked Forest. “He saw you scratch me. He saw you bring me an ice cream bar. He saw Mom in surgery. He saw all of us being born.” There was a pause, then Forest spoke again. “Did God see God being born?” Excerpted from The Sky Begins At Your Feet, an ecological memoir on cancer, community, and coming home to the body. Harriet Lerner, author of bestselling The Dance of Anger,

writes, “A marvelous storyteller, a wise woman, and a teacher in the true sense of the word, Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg takes us on a chal-

lenging yet ultimately joyful journey that leaves us fundamentally changed. Anyone who reads this memoir (and you must!) will never forget it." John Fox, author of Poetic Medicine, writes

that this memoir “....could awaken us to a whole range of connections: community, fam-ily, the natural world, body and the mysterious inner landscape of being human on this earth.” Ice Cube Press. $19.95. Isbn 9781888160437

I t is common to all people to

strive for better health and a

greater sense of well being.

Most importantly, humans

search for a palpable connection

to their soul and its eternal spiri-

tual nature.

For eons, man has looked for

ways to reconnect to the Spirit

Realm. The nervous system is the

bridge.

Of all systems, our nervous sys-

tem holds the keys to our ability to

be present in the moment and

having the embodied experience

we long for. This system is the car-

rier of Consciousness in the human

body. Within the human energy

field, one can think of the nervous

system as the wires that distribute

incoming energy through the

chakra system and to various

types of tissue. Its really pretty

simple, if you can't feel, you can't

experience! Furthermore, what do

you do if you feel too much?

One must note that our mod-

ern culture offers unprecedented

challenges to the nervous system;

increasing chemical exposures,

electromagnetic soup from

our electronic lifestyle, and the

never ending stream of incoming

information. Television ads from

the fifties seem lengthy when

compared to those of today. Fast

food and fast-paced lives leave the

nervous system undernourished

and overworked. Throw in some

other problems like acute illness,

injury or emotional stress and It

should be no surprise that we are

seeing increasing rates of autism,

attention disorders, depression,

anxiety and post traumatic stress

disorder in our younger genera-

tions.

Restoring natural, radiant, en-

ergetic function to the nervous

system creates the space for the

soul's journey and connection to

the true self. As in all matters re-

lated to our health, the power

(and responsibility) for healing lies

within the individual. Supporting

the engine is imperative. Organic

food as much as possible along

with filtered or spring water is im-

portant. A good multi-vitamin and

a mercury free source of fish oil

protects neurons. If you sus-

pect chemical or heavy metal tox-

icity, get tested and plan a detox.

Create space for quiet deep reflec-

tion in your day to begin

the process of hearing your own

internal guidance. If you haven't

already started a fitness program,

consider it. Use it, or lose it as the

saying goes. Weight training or

martial arts are a must because

these disciplines restore the red

frequency. Red energy feeds the

nervous system. Consistency is the

key. Start with one area of your

life that you can begin to make

positive changes. When the

change becomes a habit, pick the

next thing from your list.

Do you need some energy to

jump start the changes you wish

to make? Would you like

to feel what it's like to be more

embodied? Make an appointment

for an energetic nervous

system function assessment and

treatment. Often, a few sessions

of nervous system energy work

will release patterned responses

and nerve tension, allowing the

system to begin the detoxifying

process and bring the body and

mind into a present, quiet and re-

laxed state. When patterns of

inappropriate response find their

way into the nervous system, they

are not available to the conscious

mind for remediation—much like

the response to placing one's fin-

ger on a hot stove is also not

available to the conscious mind.

By restoring the vitality of our

nervous system and removing pat-

terned responses, we begin creat-

ing space to experience our au-

thentic self—who intrinsically

knows the path of evolvement. As

one who practices what I preach,

there is no achieving one’s target,

only improvements and progress

on one’s chosen path.

It's a Matter of Evolving

By Kim Meisinger

Restoring natural, radiant, energetic function to the nervous system creates the space for the soul's journey and connection to

the true self. As in all matters related to our health, the power (and responsibility) for healing lies within the individual.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 18 October 2010

In the very popular movie, Avatar, the Na’vi, in-digenous people of the planet Pandora, greet each other with a solemn, “I see you.” But as the story un-folds, there is an underlying admonition for the movie-goers to stretch our vision from the strictly physical sight to a more metaphysical awareness of the essence of one another. Is this a new concept? Certainly not!

I can vividly remember, as the youngest member of a long line of Scottish-American psychics, that I was shocked and somewhat dismayed to learn that my lit-tle playmates didn’t seem to just know what their pets needed, like I did. In my family, we accepted this innate ability to kind of "see-feel" as just one more sense. So, can you imagine my delight when the blue people of the Avatar movie spoke so freely about this hidden talent?

Can anyone just learn to do this kind of soul-searching connection—even if we don’t feel like we are particularly gifted in a metaphysical sense? As Jake Sully, the hero of our Avatar story demonstrates, “seeing deeply" can be mastered with practice and attention to the spiritual side of our relationships. And this spiritual seeing is not a New Age phenomenon either.

In countries such as India, Nepal and even Sri Lanka, the greeting of respect is accomplished with a small bow and the whispered word, “Namaste.” In Hawaii, the word “Aloha” has much the same purpose. While both “Aloha” and “Namaste” have been roughly translated into the English, “How do you do”, there are many deeper, more esoteric definitions of these salutations. Everyone from Deepak Chopra to Rev. Tom Honey has tried to clarify the significance of the Sanskrit-derived word "namaste." The definitions run the gamut from “I bow to you” to “I honor the Spirit in you which is also in me.” In much the same way, generations of Hebrew-speaking people have used the word, “Shalom” as way of offering a “place of being safe,” as in “well and happy.” But most Christians take the word "shalom" to be the Jewish equivalent of the Roman “pax” and so many people assume "shalom" means "peace." It is commonly asserted that the Arabic greeting “Salaam” also means "peace." From a metaphysical standpoint, all of these greet-ings are equally valid. Since the term metaphysics comes from the Greek works of Aristotle, the study is generally defined as being a branch of philosophical study that seeks to explain the expansion of one’s sense

of being and the world. So, Aristotle studied “being qua being” which is to say, being understood as being. This was cutting-edge thinking, since Aristotle’s col-league, Plato, had only recently convinced the deep thinkers of their time that there was indeed a natural science that followed common sense and was the fore-runner of what we now know as empirical science. So, Aristotle’s theories were a new and revolutionary way of, on the one hand, accepting that nature proceeds in a logical, predictable manner (as opposed to the super-stitious mumblings of Plato’s peers); while also assert-ing an amazing sense of accountability for the very likely outcomes which are somehow affected by the introduction of an observer. When we say we are using a metaphysical interpre-tation of a feeling, for example, we are saying that we are opening ourselves up to the very real likelihood that simply because we are attentive to this emotion, it has been somehow altered. A great example of this is that odd sense we some-times have that "someone" is watching us. As soon as we turn our attention in the direction we feel led to look, we have already changed that vague awareness into a certainty. We can now legitimately say, “I see you, Namaste, Shalom, Salaam and Aloha” with just a glance! But how do we actually “see” a life force?

The basic lessons in developing your own aura sighting skills are as follows:

• Find a quiet time and place where you are free to deeply observe a living plant or tree. Even your trailing houseplant, if it’s at least healthy, is a fine starting place.

• Sit comfortably and let your eyes just come to rest on your plant.

• Begin to admire the subtle shades of green and perhaps browns or yellows of the plant.

• You may find it easier to now "see" in a metaphysi-cal sense by squinting your eyes a bit, like a child look-ing at the Christmas tree lights.

• Now hold the image of the plant in your mind’s eye as you slowly close your eyes and become aware that, behind your closed eyelids, there appears a faint outline of the plant.

• If you cannot actually see the outline, ask yourself if you can perceive a sense of cool or warmth. Maybe

you are gently aware of a kind of gentle breeze that makes you feel something like calm, anxious or even uneasy.

• Once you have your sighting, take a deep clean-sing breath and offer a word of thanks to your plant friend for sharing this special moment.

• Once you can say you have "seen" the life-source of that plant, you must also accept the responsibility for having altered that life by just being so intensely observant.

• Does your plant need water? What kind of water? Maybe it wants you to set aside that tap water for a day or two for evaporation to offer a slightly more pu-rified drink.

• The next challenge becomes opening your Inner Self to the possibility of seeing that life-force or aura, around the people in your daily life. (Before you start “seeing” all, please be sure to ask for protection from your angels, guides, or spiritual guardians, as not all we "see" is benevolent.)

Whether you say, “Peace be with you,” “Blessed be” or “Namaste,” you can choose to see deeply and relate more fully to all living things in your world. And you just might be the bridge to resolving the conflict you never “saw” before.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 19 October 2010

In your book, This Is the Moment, you

describe your journey of gratitude.

How did you come up with this idea? There were several contributing fac-tors that brought me to the idea of my journey of gratitude. The first major one was the death of my father when I was a teenager. This left an indelible impres-sion on me that life is short, precious, and unpredictable. Another element was that I have developed over many years a process of thinking about current activi-ties in the context of ideal long term outcomes which had me learning about life by reading books about what is most important to people when confronting life ending illnesses. For instance, books like Tuesdays with Morrie, The Last Lecture, and Chasing Daylight all were about being authentic, the importance of relation-ships and conveying messages to people who are important to you before you die. Finally, I was touched by the ex-traordinary eulogies delivered at the funeral of Tim Russert, the exceptional political commentator, and how bitter-sweet these tributes were, knowing that Tim would never hear them. These hap-penings led me to ask the question, if it is so important to tell people in a genu-ine way how you feel about them, why not do it while the people are alive and well which led me to the conception of my year-long journey that I refer to as my victory lap.

Why do you call it your victory lap? The term “victory lap” reminded me of what the basketball icon, Michael Jordan, did when he retired. He went to various arenas in which he played and thanked the fans for their support. I had identified 44 people who I wanted to visit and express my profound gratitude to them for their influence on my life. These people on my victory lap were not fans, per se, but they were special relationships and this journey, like Mi-chael Jordan’s, was both a celebration and an expression of appreciation for these people who added so much to my life.

You had no intention of writing a

book about your journey? What or

who changed your mind? This was a personal journey by a person who values his privacy. I had never written a book and had no inten-tion of doing so. During the course of the year, when I shared the story of my journey with friends, invariably, they would say, “you ought to write a book”. The message had resonated with many people of all ages. I graciously acknowl-edged their compliment but kept the focus on completing my journey. The personal discovery that changed my mind was the realization that ex-pressing deep gratitude and how it had really enriched my life. I found it to be remarkable way to not only enhance my life but also those relationships that were important to me. I literally felt I had “struck gold”. When I looked for similar books on this important dimen-sion, I found none. It was then that I realized that this message had to be shared.

How did you decide who you were

going to express this gratitude to? I reflected on my life and asked my-self who really made a difference. Some had actually been “road changers” in that I took a different path because of them. Others had a very meaningful influence in some aspect of my life in-cluding my personal and professional development, my family and business lives, my health, my financial affairs, my spiritual life and even my philan-thropy. I was very surprised that there were 44 people on my list, but each one had met the criteria of having made an important difference in my life.

You made this a year-long journey?

Why? My wife and I have an active life and in order to be able to visit all 44 people without substantially altering our lives, I decided to do it over this one year pe-riod. Another important consideration was that I would also not want to be away from my wife for an extended

period of time.

How did you tell these people about

the purpose of the visit and what was

their reaction? I called each of the individuals and told them that I had decided to express my deep gratitude to those who had been important influencers in my life. I also told them the nature of the conver-sation and what I hoped we might do after our talk. Their response was usually some combination of surprise, honor, excite-ment, and concern. Many of them asked if I was okay. I fully understood their reaction and I reassured them that I was fine.

Did you meet with any resistance

when you contacted any of your 44

life changers? I met resistance with only a few peo-ple who thought it was a gift I wanted to give to them. They did not feel that they needed the gift but once they under-stood that expressing this profound gratitude was actually for me, they par-ticipated.

What is the difference between what

you call “episodic” and “systemic”

gratitude? As a child we are taught to say “thank you” for gifts and gestures. These expressions of gratitude are pri-marily for the benefit of the other per-son and usually relate to a singular act. My journey was about expressing grati-tude for a multitude of influences over the course of these relationships. I call it systematic because it was a whole body of work and quite a bit different than what I call the episodic “thank you”.

What did you get from this journey of

gratitude? What I received from this journey was more than I could have ever imag-ined or that I could express in a brief response. First was the personal satis-faction of giving this gift of gratitude. I

realized that it was a gift that was meant to be given. I had the pleasure of wrap-ping it, through my preparation, and then giving these very personal gifts. Secondly, by being very explicit about my regard and gratitude to each of them, it allowed me to see these people in a richer and deeper way. It was like seeing these relationships in High Defi-nition. Shining the light of gratitude on these relationships made me appreciate them even more deeply. When these people expressed their feeling about me, it was as if they had all delivered their eulogies to me and then some. And last but surely not least, having said everything I wanted to about these important people in my life, I achieved an extraordinary peace of mind. I knew that if something hap-pened to any of us, nothing was left unsaid. That alone was reason enough for my journey.

How has your victory lap changed the

way you live your life or interact with

others? It is very gratifying to see how the story of my journey resonates with peo-ple who act on it and how it enriches their lives. At this stage of my life and really all through my life it is has always been about facilitating and enabling people to do things that they might not have done without me. This is The Moment has the potential for influencing far more peo-ple, many of whom I will never know.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 20 October 2010

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Happy birthday Libra! Your self-confidence is flourishing. It’s your basic spiritual goal this lifetime to feel OK within your own skin. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks of you—you have to sense your inner beauty and divine gifts without needing to see them reflected back from others. Many planets are helping you achieve this inner poise. You’ll make huge, positive changes in relation-ships, work life and self-love!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Meditate on forgiveness. So much happiness can flow in if you let past hurts go. It’s also important to release addiction to perfection-ism. Mistakes are spiritual growth opportu-nities. Don’t withdraw from others because you’re not faultless yet. Receiving love pre-cisely because you are human is very healing for you. Celebrate your flaws – and the flaws of others – since they will open your heart and free you from emotional isolation.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Are your relationships where you’d like them to be? Is your life as joyous and fulfilling as you know it can be? If not, use your medita-tion time to clear out old expectations and disappointments that are junking up your subconscious. Form new goals when you realize you’re not clear on what you’re striv-ing for. As a Sagittarius, you need a target to aim for that keeps you motivated and ex-cited.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Don’t forget to balance career goals with playtime and enjoyment! Ponder your friendships and see if you’re getting back as much as you’re giving. It might be time to seek new pals whose hearts are as big as yours. When you’re compromising too much, you’re probably with people who are less mature or less thoughtful than you are. The more fun you’re able to have, the more easily you can accomplish tasks when you’re back at work. It’s the way to renew your spirit and energize your soul!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) If your career has been sluggish lately, you’ll have a surge of energy and enthusiasm this month. Your new level of charisma could attract new job opportunities, or gain notice from superiors. In general, it’s a great time to meditate and creatively visualize steps for your future. This can be in relationships, personal growth, financial abundance, even travel. You can always free yourself from limitations, but right now, it seems very easy to break loose from old patterns.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) You’re an idealist. That also means you’re chronically disappointed with life because you can glimpse how much better it could be! This month, you’ll have insights into the emotional patterns and negative habits that stand in the way of achieving your bliss. Although you crave intimacy, you’re also suspicious of it, since people often foul up your harmony, or else you loose your sense of identity. Your insights will help you keep an inner balance and boundaries, while being able to bond deeply at the same time.

Aries (March 21 – April 19) You have healing issues of trust that keep you from getting close to others. Meditate on

times you have been betrayed–especially in romantic relationships or financial circum-stances. Once you’ve been able to feel anger and grief, forgiveness can wash over you. Now you’re ready for greater prosperity, self-worth and intimate bonding. Hang in there, because many new doors are opening in those areas!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) It’s so important to balance the amount of time you serve and help others with the amount of time you devote to your relaxa-tion, health and spiritual growth. You get resentful in quiet ways. For instance, you might overeat on junk food or overspend on luxury items you don’t really want. Speak up and let people know when you’re over-whelmed. And no matter how they respond, take care of yourself first!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You might be starting a new relationship this month! You’re able to let your needs now be heard because you’re actually aware of what they are! This is a result of your spiritual growth. Open communication will also help improve your current partnership if you’re already bonded. Be ready for job excitement. Your accomplishments this month can lead to upcoming promotions or bonuses!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You’ve been working hard on yourself and it’s paying off! You’ve probably been having insights into family-of-origin issues that produced intimacy problems. Now you’re getting to create new patterns in relation-ships. If you have “flashbacks” to unhappy romantic experiences, meditate to forgive and release yourself and the people involved. Don’t let fears hold you back from becoming the new you! You’ve come a long way. Trust that you have evolved and go forward with confidence!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Your challenge is taking meditative and spiritual energy and applying it in all areas of your life. Inconsistencies make you feel weird. For instance, do you leave yoga class and drive aggressively on the way home? Or do you read uplifting books, and then get snappy with family? Try to focus on one spiritual principle each day and stick with it in your mind. Start with projecting love toward everyone you encounter before you start a conversation.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You might be irritated this month. If so, think about how you’re treating yourself. More than likely you need more self care–gentle affirmations, meditation time, deep breathing, being in nature. As a Virgo, your soul is designed to give and to serve. But you’ll feel drained and resentful if your spiri-tual source runs dry. Spend time nurturing yourself every day and you’ll be able to keep your mind and heart open!

MEDITATIVE JOURNEY

Tuesdays @ 7pm Join us as we explore an extensive variety

of meditation styles & techniques ~ everything from Guided

Meditations to simply sitting quietly. Cost is $7.

HATHA YOGA

Wednesdays @ 7pm Hatha Yoga is an ancient practice of

movement of the boty. The work Hatha combines "ha", Sun

& "tha" Moon. When the two components of the word are

placed together, "hatha" means "forceful", implying that

powerful work must be done to purify the body. Yoga means

to yoke, or to join two things together, hence hatha yoga is

meant to join together sun (masculine, active) energy with

the moon (feminine, receptive) energy, thus producing

balance and greater power in an individual.
