Ten “To Do’s” For Homeowners(NAPS)—It’s time to check around the

house to make sure things are operating effi-ciently. Here are 10 often-overlooked tasks toadd to your home-cleaning list:

1. Check AC: Have your air-conditioningsystem tuned up to lower energy bills andensure the system is running at its manufac-turer-rated efficiency.

2. Check Water Heater: If your waterheater is more than five years old, check it forsigns of leakage or rusting at the bottom.

3. Fertilize Lawn: Apply a high-nitrogenfertilizer once in the spring and again in thefall.

4. Check Refrigerator: Clean the refriger-ator’s condenser coil with a long-handledbottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with anattachment hose to remove dust and lint thatcould shut down the unit by causing it tooverheat.

5. Clean Gutters: Clean the gutters so the

rainwater flows easily off the roof. Clearingleaves prevents water from pooling in areasand attracting mosquitoes.

6. Organize Closets: Wash or dry-cleanclothes before storing them in a zipperedsweater or blanket bag or in a plastic bin.

9. File Important Documents: Store war-ranties, operating manuals and other docu-ments in hanging files, folders or binders foreasy access.

10. Check Batteries: The average home isfilled with battery-operated devices—fromflashlights to smoke detectors to cordless

The Winkel Funeral Home is a secondgeneration Otsego business. This well-knownbusiness, previously located at 117 E. OrleansSt., was purchased by Raymond and BernadineWinkel in l956. They also provided an ambu-lance service. The business merged with thepresent 207 E. Allegan St. location in l964.

In l968, Raymond and Bernadine added anaddition to the building. Their son, Jim, and Jo Ann Winkel came into the business in l972.Ray retired in l984.

The building itself dates back to l880. Somehistorical pictures on display at the funeralhome include a picture of one of the first horse-drawn hearses in Allegan County.

DOSTERwill celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary and their90th birthdays this year. After meeting at Plainwell HighSchool as teenagers, they decided to marry on October 24,1942, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The next 70 years theyspent farming the family farm and participating in thecommunity and their church, which they continue today.

They have six children. They all reside in the Doster area.They are Rita (John) Wells, George Scott (Sue) Doster,Millard (Nancy) Doster, Jade (Bill) Harrington, Kim(Nancy) Doster and Mark Doster. To round out theirfamily they have 14 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren,16 great-grandchildren and 1 step great-grandchild.

Duane passed away Wednesday,October 17, 2012 in Kalamazoo.Duane was born February 3, 1934 inFerrysburg, Michigan to John and

Grace (Ruiter) Kuiper. In 1951 he graduated fromWest Michigan Christian High School and in1960, he graduated from Western MichiganUniversity. He served in the Air Force during theKorean War. Duane and Pam together withEugene Zelmanski were the owners andoperators of the Lighthouse Restaurant in Otsegofrom 1975 to 1990. He initiated the concept,helped design and organized the founding ofPrairiewood Golf Course. He enjoyed playing pingpong with grandson Tyler, fishing and golfing. OnJune 30, 1972 in Otsego he married Pamela S.Hutchinson, who survives. Also surviving are 7children, Cindy (Andrew) Parenteau of Elk,Washington, Mark (Peg) Kuiper of Cooper,Robert (Trish) Kuiper of Vicksburg, Karen Kuiperof Otsego, Matt Kuiper of Vicksburg, Michael(Angelique) Kuiper of Otsego, Doug (Katie)Kuiper of Troy; 14 grandchildren; 7 greatgrandchildren; 1 sister Nancy VandenBosch ofSpring Lake. He was preceded in death by abrother Jack Kuiper and 2 sisters Sally Swartzand Doris Wezeman. In accordance with hiswishes, cremation has taken place. A memorialservice will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am at theFirst Congregational Church of Otsego. Charles Howard Beardsley passed away on September 27, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Eupha Beardsley. Surviving are son Robert (Carrie) Beardsley of Portage and daughter Cindy (Ted) Murankus of Florida, brother Eugene (Pat) Beardsley of Kalamazoo and sister Jenny (Dale) Hayward of Scotts; six grand-children and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
