We’re getting closer to

wrapping up another great

year for our Greene County

Program but we still have

some important work to do.

Officer elections and award

nominations will take place at

the October 24th meeting,

followed by the Fall Craft

Fair, Nov. 4th; Special Event

with Chris H. Olsen, Nov.

18th; and Holiday Dinner, Nov.

28th. Please make plans to be

a part of all these important

dates. Your presence and your

year and a new phase for our

organization.

Decisions are currently being

made by Project

Coordinators, Committee

Leads, and our Program

Chair for 2018 as well. Some

members will be stepping

down from those roles and

others will be needed to fill

them to keep current projects

and committees going. If you

can fill any vacancies, please

volunteer.

Thanks for all you do!

Greene County Master Gardener

Meeting

September 25, 2017

Greene County Library Legacy

Room

Delicious snacks and desserts

were provided by Ann

Bowers and Brenda Barr.

Connie Whitman called the

meeting to order at 6:30.

Kathy Graber introduced our

speaker, Terry Rogers from

Rogers Tree Service who

presented a PowerPoint about

the proper way to prune trees

and shrubs. Several people

asked questions.

Terry Rogers

Connie congratulated Hannah

Riggs Williams (who was on

her honeymoon) on her

recent marriage. Kathy

Graber shared pictures from

her phone of the wedding and

reception.

The September Minutes and

Treasurer’s Report were

approved as printed in the

newsletter.

A full slate of officers is

required for a vote in

October. As no further

Minutes of September 25, 2017

nominations were submitted

to the Nomination

Committee prior to the

September meeting, a

preliminary secret ballot was

presented to the general

membership with names of

all members, excluding

current officers. Members

were instructed to write in

candidates for each position

(president, vice president,

secretary, and treasurer).

Nominations were then

brought to the floor by

Pauletta Tobey--Tacie

Huffman-VP, Linda

Glickert-secretary, and Jean

Crossno-treasurer. Pauletta’s

name was listed on the ballot

for president. Connie

thanked Joy Gatlin and

Martha Chiles for their work

on the Nominating

Committee. They will count

the nominations, check with

all nominees to confirm their

acceptance of the

nomination, and report back

to the Executive Board.

PNG Leadership is

September 26-27 in

Ferndale. Bonnie Hamilton,

Dave Freeze, and Pauletta

Tobey will be attending,

with Pauletta replacing

Libby Christie. Holly

Fletcher and Connie

Whitman will be

participating in a panel

discussion on Advanced

Training with County 76

member Mary Wells.

Holly Fletcher reported that

there were plenty of workers

on the Greene County Fair

Flower and Plant Entries on

September 5 and that there

was a variety of entries.

The MOA for the special

event with Chris Olsen on

November 18 has been

approved. The event will be

from 10-1, registration fee

$15 per person, and a limit

of 75 attendees. Greene

County Master Gardeners

will pay a discounted fee of

$10 each.

Linda Glickert gave an

update on the Spring

Gardening Seminar and the

Craft Fair. She plans to talk

to Dave about the speaker’s

payment and reimbursement

requests. The Craft Fair is

November 4th at Paragould

Community Center. She

reported that the booth fee

has been paid and that a

variety of crafts are needed.

Libby Christie reported no

update for the Spring Plant

Sale, but will have

information next month.

Linda Glickert said the

October BBL will feature

Craighead extension agent,

Branon Theisse speaking on

Pesticide Use.

The Executive Board made

recommendations to donate

50.00 to the Janet B. Carson

Scholarship and 50.00 to the

State Awards. Sue Gilmartin

made a motion to make both

donations and Brenda Barr

seconded. The vote was

unanimous in favor.

Donations are due January

15th.

In order to have two signs

located on the new by-pass

for the 2018 Operation Wildflower Project, $500 is

required. The dedicated

Kennemore Funds total

$239.99 and an additional

$260 is needed to place the

signs. The Board

recommended optional

$10.00 donations by

members; and if unable to

reach the $500 from

donations, suggested

dedicating funds from the

Craft Fair. A vote is tabled

until October to see if this is

needed.

The 2018 Master Gardener

calendars are ready. Usually

we provide calendars to the

mayor, county judge, library

staff, Dusty Kennemore, Bob

Branch, and new members.

The cost for 30 calendars is

$30. Connie asked for a

motion to approve. Pauletta

made a motion to continue

this practice; Linda Glickert

seconded. Vote was

unanimous in favor.

Wanda Howerton announced

that the Daylily Society’s fall

sale will be Saturday

September 30th from 7-1 at

the ASU Farmer’s Market.

Connie discussed a

suggestion for a plaque to

honor Dr. Laird. She read an

extensive list of his

contributions to the

community and to Master

Gardeners. The

recommendation was tabled

for design, cost, location, and

possible sponsors.

Upcoming deadline

reminders: Project

Brown Bag Lunch October 10th

The October BBL program brought Craighead County's Branon Thiesse to us to present information on Pesticide Safety. When we talk about "pesticides" we're really talking about all the "cides"-herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and one more-rodenticides. Just about his first statement was "Read the Label". Then know what you're using for what purpose. The extension office has updated booklets to help with lawns and ornamentals, insects, and one for diseases. You can also go online to our favorite site - uaex.

14 were in attendance - 3 were guests.

The second Arkansas Monarch

and Pollinator Summit was held

October 12th at UA Pulaski

Technical College in North

Little Rock. The first summit

was held in Conway in 2015 and

laid the groundwork for what is

now the Arkansas Monarch

Conservation Partnership

(AMCP). The partnership is a

state-level working collaboration

with representation from state

and federal agencies,

municipalities, non-

governmental organizations,

businesses, and private

individuals working together to

promote conservation of

monarch butterflies, pollinators,

and their habitats.

For the past two years, the

AMCP has been working on the

development of a statewide

conservation plan for monarchs

and pollinators. This plan

includes goals and objectives for

habitat creation/restoration,

research and monitoring, and

education and outreach.

Marilyn White, Cora Flanery,

Patti Roberts, Linda Glickert and

Connie Whitman attended to

learn what changes could be

made in Greene County to help

monarchs and all pollinators

flourish, and they heard from

many wonderful educators!

They also met Dan Scheiman,

Audubon Society and upcoming

Spring Seminar speaker.

The sponsors making the summit

possible by securing a location,

lunch, and refreshments were

Conservation District, Arkansas
