THE WEDDING BANQUET

Fr.. Sergio G. Roman St. Paul compares the Church as the bride of Christ and makes us see that Christian marriage is a sign of the love that Christ has for the Church, so much that he gave himself for it. God requests Christian couples to love each other, just as Christ loves the Church. Indeed the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony gives spouses a special grace, that helps them to be good husbands and good fathers, so that they carry out to their children and to the community which they live in, the palpable sign of the love of Christ to his Church. When the parable of the wedding banquet speaks of the guests at the banquet, somehow we can understand that we too are invited to the wedding reception between the Son of God, Christ, the Church and His wife. We are invited to participate in the joy of our Lord and the joy of our Church to which we belong. We are invited, therefore, to live,as the Church which we are, the nuptial covenant with Christ that begins at Baptism, is sealed with the Eucharist, is strengthened by the Holy Spirit in Confirmation, is purified through penance, it heals with the anointing, is signified in Marriage and is perpetuated in the Sacrament of Orders, so that we live each day in the reality in which we live. The parable claims that some guests do not agree to participate because they have other things that are more important to them and this is also part of our reality.We find many excuses not to live fully our call to salvation in the Church! Resignation driven sometimes by ignorance, but the majority of the time, a fault of disregard of God's plans for us. We move aside voluntarily, "we are believers, but non-practicing." And even among those who accept to participate in the nuptial covenant with Christ, are those that are physically there, but it seems as if they weren't. Their attire is not fancy because they don't feel it is a celebration, they are merely there due to obligation, to fulfill, but do not feel the joy and happiness that God wants us to share. When I hear this part of the parable, I immediately envision those people who always stay by the door during Holy Mass, they answer their phone calls they ignore the positions of the assembly and sit in their seats , waiting for Massto end as quickly as possible, with a gesture that expresses their boredom and dissatisfaction. They have not gone to the banquet , they forced to attend. Being Catholic is a celebration that fills us with joy.

San Pablo compara a la Iglesia con la esposa de Cristo y nos hace ver que el matrimonio cristiano es signo de ese amor que Cristo tiene a la Iglesia, tanto que se entregó por ella. Pide a los esposos cristianos que se amen como Cristo ama a la Iglesia y de hecho el Sacramento del santo Matrimonio da a los esposos una gracia especial que los ayuda a ser buenos esposos y buenos padres, de tal modo que ellos realizan ante sus hijos y ante la comunidad en que viven el signo palpable del amor de Cristo a su Iglesia. Cuando la parábola del banquete de bodas nos habla de los invitados al banquete, de alguna forma podemos entender que también nosotros somos invitados a ese banquete de bodas entre el hijo de Dios, Cristo, y su esposa la Iglesia. Somos invitados a participar de la dicha de nuestro Señor y de la dicha de nuestra Iglesia a la que nosotros pertenecemos. Se nos invita, pues, a vivir, como Iglesia que somos, esa alianza nupcial con Cristo que se inicia en el Bautismo, se sella con la Eucaristía, se fortalece con el Espíritu santo en la Confirmación, se purifica con la penitencia, se sana con la Unción, se significa en el Matrimonio y se perpetúa en el Sacramento del Orden, para que la vivamos cada día en la realidad que nos toca vivir. La parábola denuncia que algunos invitados no aceptan participar porque tienen otras cosas que para ellos son más importantes y esto es parte, también, de nuestra realidad. ¡Cuántas excusas encontramos para no vivir plenamente nuestro llamado a la salvación en la Iglesia! Renuncia motivada a veces por la ignorancia, pero la mayoría de las veces por un desprecio culpable de los planes de Dios sobre nosotros. Nos hacemos a un lado voluntariamente, “somos creyentes, pero no practicantes”. Y aún entre los que aceptamos participar de la alianza nupcial con Cristo se encuentran aquellos que están allí, pero como si no estuvieran. No llevan el vestido de fiesta porque ni siquiera sienten que es una fiesta, tan sólo están allí por obligación, por cumplir, pero no sienten el gozo y la alegría que Dios nos quiere compartir. Cuando escucho esta parte de la parábola inmediatamente me imagino a esas personas que siempre se quedan junto a la puerta en la santa misa, que están contestando sus llamadas telefónicas, que ignoran las posiciones corporales de la asamblea y que se derraman en sus bancas como esperando a que todo termine lo más rápido posible, con un gesto que manifiesta su aburrimiento y su descontento. Ellos no han ido al banquete, han sido llevados a fuerzas. Ser católico es una fiesta que nos llena de alegría.

WE DON¨T KNOW WHEN THE LORD WILL CALL US.

On Saturday, October 7, 2017, I hear a voice message from a Paramedic informing me that a Parishioner living in June Lake, passed away that morning. He gave name of the diseased, but Michael is a very common name and I didn´t have an idea of who he was. I called his Daughter trying to say some words of consolation and assuring her that I was at her service for anything I could do. I told her that every Mass during the next nine days were going to be for Michael. That same evening, after the Mass, A Lady told me. ¨How sad that our Mike is gone¨. I asked her to let me know who he was and when she told me that was my friend Mike that was coming every morning to Mass, the one who used to do the readings and then to be seated nest to the balcony door and pamper my cat. I was really in shock and then, as Jesus did in front of the tomb o his friend Lazarus, I cried, but at the same time, I was grateful with God for giving me the privilege of having such a great friend that now is enjoying his award in Heaven. The next day, as I finished the Mass in Bridgeport, I received a phone call from a friend of Tracy, CA informing me that Fr. Jairo Herna n Ramí rez, After Celebrating the Saturday Evening Mass in Manteca, CA, he went for a gathering in Modesto and suddenly he fell death. Once again, I got in shock since Fr. Jairo, from Colombia has been a very good friend of me. Mike and Fr. Jairo died suddenly without any syndromes or signs of any illness. I may say that this is a blessing, dying in such way without any suffering and any long agony. We don´t know for sure when the Lord will call us. Probably, after a long and painful illness, probably on a very old age, or on a car accident or going to a Concert and being shut from a crazy maniac or terrorist. But the most important question is… Are we ready to go? It is not to live every day being afraid that probably is the last one, but better being glad for every day as an opportunity to live plenty and to do good works for the Kingdom of God.

LA SEGUNDA COLECTA DE HOY.- Varios Estados de la Repu blica Mexicana fueron seriamente afectados con el pasado Terremoto del 19 de Septiembre. Muchas Comunidades no esta n recibiendo la ayuda adecuada debido a la burocracia gubernamental y otras situaciones que ya sabemos. La mejor y ma s efectiva manera de ayudar es por medio de la Iglesia Cato lica. Se generoso.

NO SABEMOS CUANDO EL SEÑOR NOS LLAMARÁ.-

El Sa bado 7 de Octubre, recibí la llamada de un Parame dico informa ndome que un Feligre s de June Lake habí a fallecido repentinamente, me dio su nombre, pero Michael es un nombre muy comu n y no tení a idea de quie n pudiera ser. Le llame a su hija para darle palabras de consuelo y ponerme a sus o rdenes para lo que se pudiera ofrecer, tambie n le dije que Celebrarí a por su Padre las Misas de novenario. Ese mismo dí a, despue s de la Misa Vespertina, una querida feligresa me dijo ¨Así que se nos murió nuestro Mike¨. Le pedí que me dijera de quién se trataba y cuando me dijo que era Mike Coffey, mi amigo que llegaba en shorts a la Misa Matutina cada man ana aunque nevara, que hací a las lecturas de la Misa y se sentaba junto a la puerta de la terraza y acariciaba a mi gatita, Caí en cuenta de quie n se trataba y me sentí tremendamente impactado y entonces, como Jesu s lo hizo ante la tumba de su amigo La zaro, yo tambie n llore , pero al mismo tiempo le agradecí a Dios por el privilegio de haber contado con la amistad de Mike que ahora goza de su premio en el Cielo. Al dí a siguiente, despue s de la Misa en Bridgeport, recibí una llamada de una amiga de Tracy, CA informa ndome que el Padre Jairo Herna n Ramí rez, despue s de haber Celebrado la Misa Vespertina del Sa bado, fue a una reunio n en Modesto, CA donde se desplomo muerto. Nuevamente quede impactado ante la noticia, ya que el Padre Jairo de Colombia habí a sido un muy querido amigo. Mike y el Padre Jairo murieron de repente sin ningu n sí ntoma previo de enfermedad. Se puede decir que es una bendicio n morir de esa manera sin sufrimiento ni larga agoní a. No sabemos con seguridad cuando el Sen or nos llamara . Tal vez despue s de una larga y dolorosa enfermedad, quiza de viejos, en algu n accidente o en medio de un Concierto debido a algu n disparo de lun loco o terrorista. Pero la pregunta importante es… ¿Estamos preparados para morir? No se trata de vivir cada dí a con el temor de que sea el u ltimo, sino con la alegrí a de saber que es una nueva oportunidad que Dios nos da para vivir plenamente y hacer obras buenas meritorias para el Cielo.

5o ANIVERSARIO MATRIMONIAL. Es motivo de celebrar el vivir en el Sacramento del Amor de Dios durante medio siglo. Alegrémonos con María Elena y Manuel García el Sábado 21 de Octubre con la Misa en su honor a las 2 p.m.

COLECTA POR LAS VICTIMAS DE INCENDIOS.- Nuevamente pido su generosidad para ayudar a quienes han sufrido los terribles fuegos en el Norte de California. Los fondos recaudados serán distribuidos en la Diócesis de Santa Rosa para ayudar a la reconstrucción de Escuelas, Iglesias y otras instalaciones. La otra mitad es para Caridades Católicas de Santa Rosa para asistir en sus necesidades a los afectados por los incendios. Agradezco al pueblo Católico por su extraordinaria generosidad.

The collected funds will be divided for distribution to the Diocese of Santa Rosa to help with the reconstruction of schools, churches and church facilities.
