Experience Connecting Knowing Loving Growing “An Explosion of Gratitude” October 2013 (The following is an excerpt from Doug’s sermon on September 22nd entitled “Grace and Gratitude”.) The Stewardship theme this year is “An Explosion of Gratitude.” I like that. You see, for years I have heard it said that money follows ministry. Give people a great vision of what can be done, or show people the results of what has been done and people will give to the cause. I get that. I often try to get you to do that, and I certainly do it myself. I give to our church’s many fund-raisers because I believe in the ministries they are raising money for. And I am confident they will produce fruit for the kingdom. But that’s not the primary reason why Tara and I give a tenth of our income to the church as a spiritual discipline every month. It isn’t because of what I believe we can all collectively do if we all put a tenth of our incomes together. Not at all. Now, that’s a good reason. Don’t mishear me. I DO believe very much that we can do significant ministry if we all get together. It just isn’t my primary reason for giving to the church. The primary reason for why we give is because of what God has done for us – not through material blessings, but in pouring out His grace to us through Jesus Christ. I give because I’m grateful. So let's try to define just what gratitude is in our experience. I have found it helpful to think of some things that might be thought of as gratitude, but really aren’t. For example, gratitude is more than saying, "Thank you," when someone gives you something. Gratitude is more than an action which we decide to do by an act of our own willpower. You can say the words, "thank you," when there is not gratitude in your heart at all. Manners or custom may dictate that you say the words when you don't really appreciate what has been done for you. What it takes to turn the words, "thank you" into gratitude is the real genuine feeling of gratitude. Gratitude is a feeling that arises un-coerced in the heart. Gratitude is an attitude. It cannot be willed into existence directly if it is not there. Let me give you an example... If you give a twelve year-old boy a necktie or a pair of socks for Christmas, he may dutifully say, "Thank you," but the spontaneous feeling of gratitude will probably not be there, at least not like it would be if you gave him his new favorite video game instead. Gratitude is a feeling, not an act of willpower; and it is a good feeling. When it rises in our hearts, we like it. It is part of happiness. It is a form of delight. But we don’t stop there. Gratitude is more than delighting in a gift. It is more than feeling happy that you got something you wanted. For example, if you give that same twelve year-old the video game, he might just rip open the package and say, "Wow," and then walk away and start bragging about how much better his game is than yours. He might not even give a second thought to the kindness you did for him in giving him the game. (continued on page 2)

“An Explosion of Gratitude”

October 2013

(The following is an excerpt from Doug’s sermon on September 22nd entitled “Grace and Gratitude”.)

The Stewardship theme this year is “An Explosion of Gratitude.” I

like that. You see, for years I have heard it said that money follows

ministry. Give people a great vision of what can be done, or show

people the results of what has been done and people will give to the

cause. I get that. I often try to get you to do that, and I certainly do

it myself. I give to our church’s many fund-raisers because I believe

in the ministries they are raising money for. And I am confident they

will produce fruit for the kingdom. But that’s not the primary reason

why Tara and I give a tenth of our income to the church as a spiritual

discipline every month. It isn’t because of what I believe we can

all collectively do if we all put a tenth of our incomes together. Not

at all. Now, that’s a good reason. Don’t mishear me. I DO believe very much that we can do significant

ministry if we all get together. It just isn’t my primary reason for giving to the church. The primary reason

for why we give is because of what God has done for us – not through material blessings, but in pouring out

His grace to us through Jesus Christ. I give because I’m grateful.

So let's try to define just what gratitude is in our experience. I have found it helpful to think of some things

that might be thought of as gratitude, but really aren’t. For example, gratitude is more than saying, "Thank

you," when someone gives you something. Gratitude is more than an action which we decide to do by an act

of our own willpower. You can say the words, "thank you," when there is not gratitude in your heart at all.

Manners or custom may dictate that you say the words when you don't really appreciate what has been done

for you. What it takes to turn the words, "thank you" into gratitude is the real genuine feeling of gratitude.

Gratitude is a feeling that arises un-coerced in the heart. Gratitude is an attitude. It cannot be willed into

existence directly if it is not there.

Let me give you an example... If you give a twelve year-old boy a necktie or a pair of socks for Christmas,

he may dutifully say, "Thank you," but the spontaneous feeling of gratitude will probably not be there, at least

not like it would be if you gave him his new favorite video game instead. Gratitude is a feeling, not an act of

willpower; and it is a good feeling. When it rises in our hearts, we like it. It is part of happiness. It is a form

of delight.

But we don’t stop there. Gratitude is more than delighting in a gift. It is more than feeling happy that you

got something you wanted. For example, if you give that same twelve year-old the video game, he might just

rip open the package and say, "Wow," and then walk away and start bragging about how much better his

game is than yours. He might not even give a second thought to the kindness you did for him in giving him

the game.

(continued on page 2)

Page 2: Oct2013

Aldersgate Experience 2

He delights in getting the gift, but he is still an ungrateful child

because his delight is not directed to you, the giver. So gratitude is

more than delighting in a gift. It is a feeling of happiness directed

toward the person who gave you something good. It is a happiness

that comes not merely from the gift, but from receiving the generous

action. Gratitude is a happy feeling you have about a giver because

of their giving something good to you or doing something good for

you.

But one more qualification has to be made: generally, we don't send

our employer a thank you note every payday. This does not mean that we don't feel grateful that we have a

job, and that we have the strength to earn money, and that our employer pays us fairly. What it means is that

the emotion of gratitude generally rises in direct proportion to how UNDESERVED a gift is. Where work and

pay are commensurate, we do not feel pay as an undeserved kindness, but rather as our due, and therefore the

feeling of gratitude is not very intense toward our employer. He has not done us a favor; we have earned it.

In other words, gratitude flourishes in the sphere of grace. (The sermon excerpt stops here.)

This is why Tara and I give. We give because we are grateful to God for the grace we have received. We can

never pay God back for what He has done for us. We’re not trying to. But we recognize that God has blessed

us with His love through Jesus Christ; and therefore, as a spiritual discipline, and as a follower of Christ, we

give a tithe each and every month. We are grateful. That’s why we give.

May the Peace of Christ be with you,

Pastor Doug

CHILDREN IN WORSHIP

3RD GRADE BIBLES

Aldersgate has a tradition of presenting current third graders with a personally

engraved Bible. This year, the presentation will be on October 20th during

the 11:00 service. This is always a special time in the spiritual journey of our

children. If your child is in the third grade and you have not been contacted by

Jane, please send her an e-mail at [email protected] or call (919) 477-0509

x 101.

MISSION POSSIBLE KIDS

So far we have recruited and trained 17 special agents who have begun

changing the world by helping others. In September, we launched our

chapter, made placemats used on Wednesday night to show our love

for our church family, and made “Warm Fuzzies” for children at areal

hospitals to brighten their day. We are always accepting new recruits in

grade 1-5. Mission Possible Kids meets 6:30-7:30 each Wednesday.

“Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let

the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be

jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of

the forest will sing for joy; they will sing before the

Lord" (Ps 96:11-12; NIV).

Don’t just stand there - Get in the Psalm! All are invited and welcome to join in our music ministry!

this fall, let Psalm 100 come to life for you! AUMC invites every age and ability to make a joyful noise unto the

Lord! All are invited and welcome to join in our music ministry!

CHANCEL CHOIR: What could be a better way to deepen your celebration of the Christ-child, than to sing

with our choir for Christmas! We are beginning our rehearsing towards our Cantata now, and welcome all to

join us. The Cantata this year is extraordinary – it’s called The Winter Rose, by Joseph Martin. (You can have a

sneak-peek and listen if you go to: http://www.shawneepress.com/viewaudio.do?

itemId=35025986&fileName=http://s3.amazonaws.com/halleonard-closerlook/35025986/A7402_excerpt.mp3 )

Why not join us, this Wednesday from 7:30- 9:00 pm? Our choir is big enough that you don’t have to make a

52-week commitment, we understand that everyone is out some of the time. Just come when you can! “No

experience is necessary” – we make a sweet, sweet sound in God’s ear by doing our best, and letting the Holy

Spirit do the rest! Adults and Youth are encouraged to join in! So, come on! Special Note: 8:15 service has a

LOT of empty seats, so if that’s your service, pretty please come!! PRAISE TEAM: We rehearse on Tuesdays, 6:15-7:30 pm. If you enjoy Contemporary Christian music, and

love to sing or play guitar, drum, bass, flute, accordion, keyboard, trumpet…. we’d love to welcome you to our

merry band!

CHILDREN’S CHOIR: Sunday Arts Afternoons offer opportunity for children to dance (4-4:45pm), sing

(4:45 – 5:30pm) and ring (5:30-6:00 pm)! Young Dancers are led by Anna Van Deventer. 2nd -5th graders are welcome. As they are learning a dance to

share on Nov. 24, it’s important to come NOW! Young Singers are in two groups: (one for 4-yr. through 6-year-olds, and one for 2nd-through 5th graders).

“Music and More,” led by Rochelle Nye and Nan de Andrade is for ages 4-6. We spend time exploring all the arts, and learning music that we can share at worship. “Young Singers,” for

Grades 2-5, is led by Heidi Miller, with Wendie Anderson assisting. They sing for worship about once a month

and will also be presenting a Christmas Musical this year!! Young Ringers, meeting right after children’s choir, is our intermediate children’s bell choir, for children who

have rung before, or have music reading skills. They are learning Christmas music! (Interested beginner ringers,

please contact Nan, so she can contact you about starting a group for them asap.) HANDBELLS: Two adult/youth bell choirs and two children’s bell choirs are forming this fall (beginning the

week of Sept. 9th). For adults and youth: JOYFUL NOISE RINGERS, our advanced choir, meets on Tuesdays

at 7:30pm; and PRAISE RINGERS, a beginner-level choir forming now, meets on Monday evenings at 7:00

A MOMENT OF GRATITUDE BY

ANNA VAN DEVENTER

When I first came to Aldersgate, I could not have imagined all that the Lord had in store for me. This

congregation is a special gathering of people who include me, teach me, support me, & show me what it

means to be brothers and sisters in Christ. I have been blessed by my youth group through the mission trips

and Conference events we attend, my small group through the prayer support I have received, the Disciple

One Bible study through the way they included & instructed me, the Sacred Dance ministry through worship

and leadership, and all of the staff & members of Aldersgate who have helped empower me to live as Jesus

did.

SWEET SOUNDS (HAMMERED DULCIMER GROUP) If you’ve always loved hammered dulcimer,

why not try learning to play? We have a small group learning together on every-other Wednesday at 11:00am.

We may even have a dulcimer you can borrow! Call Nan and find out more about us!

SPOTIFY YOUR PRAISE - Spotify is a free application for computers or smart phones/pads/pods that

plays music from playlists built by members. Each month, Nan creates a playlist of the music which will be

sung that month at our 9:30 am Contemporary worship service. If you search for Nan de Andrade and then

choose the month’s playlist (for example, OCT AUMC 2013), you can “tune your heart” all week, and be

even more ready to praise God on Sunday mornings! Another cool feature is that you can select “Radio” from

this playlist and it will shuffle in a variety of Contemporary Christian music from the same artists and play all

day long! Hope you’ll give it a try – and if you encounter problems, give Nan a call!

UPCOMING CONCERT OPPORTUNITIES

Saturday, October 19th - FREE CONCERT featuring Joseph Martin - Come and hear the piano as you

never heard it before!!! Joseph Martin is a premier American church choral composer, and has an amazing

ability as a piano performer. Nan says, “You do NOT want to miss this!” Sponsored by Community UMC in

Butner

Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 pm (Depart AUMC at 6:00 pm) We will take our church bus for

this special opportunity. Contact Nan to get on the passenger list! Click Here to learn

Hillsongs United with Darlene Zschech, the Australian praise and worship band responsi-

ble for many of our Contemporary Christian standards, such as “Shout to the Lord” and

“From the Inside Out,” is coming to Greensboro Coliseum on Monday, Nov. 18th. Nan

is working on purchasing group-rate ($24) tickets, call her to get on the list.

It’s that time of year again! As the weather gets cooler and leaves start to cover the ground, we look forward to

hosting our Fall Festival! Once again, Aldersgate is inviting the community to join us on Halloween Night,

October 31, from 5:30 to 8pm. We have games ready to be led by both youth and adults. We need your help

with donations of candy, cupcakes, and decorated car trunks for Trunk or Treat in our parking lot. During the

evening, we will offer a bounce house, cupcake walk, and hot dogs and popcorn in addition to trunk or treat

and fun games!

You should have received A Sign-Up Genius in your email inbox. You can also sign up in person at the

Welcome station outside the Sanctuary. All donations can be turned in to Tara’s office or in boxes available

outside the church office and outside the gym entryway on Sundays.

“What is Trunk or Treat?” some of you may ask! Trunk or Treat is a fun

way of sharing candy and treats with church friends and neighbors without

going door to door. We invite families to bring their cars to church, open the

trunk and decorate with a theme of their choice. In the past we have had

some great scary-themed trunks, princess-themed trunks, game trunks, har-

vest trunks – almost anything you or your family likes! Simply come early,

decorate your trunk, and share candy or goodies with trick or treaters like

you would at home from the front door. Remember to sign up so we can

keep track of how many trunks we have!

NATIONAL MENTAL ILLNESS

AWARENESS WEEK

October 6-12, 2013

Good News — There is Help for Mental Illness Mental illnesses are brain disorders. They are not a sign of weakness. They are not anyone’s fault. Depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, obsesssive-compulsive and panic disorders are biologically based. Brain disorders are common. One family in five is affected by a brain disorder. Brain disorders are more common than cancer or heart disease. Brain disorders can be successfully treated. Medication, therapy and community-based support services can help people living with brain dis-orders to have productive and rewarding lives.

You are not alone — help is available. It is not always easy to cope with brain disorders. If you or someone you care about is suffering with a brain disorder, there are many organizations that can help. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is an organization of family members - parents, sons, daughters, spouses, siblings - as well as people living with brain disorders, mental health professionals, and concerned citizens. Our mission is support, education, and advocacy to better the lives of those who suffer from mental illness. NAMI Durham sponsors regular educational programs, support groups, activities related to providing support, education, and advocacy on behalf of individuals with severe mental illness and their families. Call 919-489-5515 for more information.

For more information about this event,

visit www.creativefooddrive.com. Our

goal is to raise 50 cans here on site. Help

us help our community.

'For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you

invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.' ….Truly

I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.'

Matthew 25:35-40

"We are called to stand in awe of what the poor have to carry rather than in judgment of how they carry it."

Fr. Greg Boyle

Can you imagine what it would be like to find yourself without a safe place

for your family to live? A low paying job or no job at all? Limited transpor-

tation? No family resources? The Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network

offers a safety net to families while they get back on their feet. IHN can

serve three (sometimes four) families at a time and for the 90 days the fami-

lies are in the Network the families and DIHN staff work hard to address the

issues that led to homelessness. Churches in the network provide a hot meal

and a safe place to sleep for these families. Aldersgate hosts the IHN fami-

lies for a week at a time once each quarter.

That’s where you come in. You can help reach out to these families by your support of the Interfaith Hospital-

ity Network. You can be a part of the team of 40-50 Aldersgate members who join together to be the hands

and feet of Jesus. IHN needs people to serve as evening hosts and help with the evening meal; stay overnight

to help the guests as needed with extra blankets, and giving a wake up knock on the door in the morning; help

with transportation from the Day House to the church each afternoon (pick up time at the House is 5:30pm) or

return our guests to the Day House in the morning (leave time can be as early as 5:30am!). And, you can pray!

You can also support IHN by making donations for gift cards so guests can buy school clothes and supplies for

their children, or gas cards or bus passes as needed. The IHN website posts a list of items they need for the

Day House such as cleaning products, towels and wash cloths, paper products, etc.

I believe that the people who help with the Interfaith Hospitality Network all get back a lot more than they

give. The love and caring that Aldersgate members show to our IHN families is reflected back a thousand

fold.

Aldersgate’s next time to host the IHN families will be the week of December 1st. Please contact Susan Gay

([email protected] or 919-471-2352) if you want to talk about where you might like to serve.
