Earlier this summer, a quote on the shop window of Wilson & Willy’s in Minneapolis stopped me in my tracks: A new adventure is coming up and I’m sure it will be a good one. These were the words of one of my Dad’s heroes, the environmentalist and gifted Minnesota writer Sigurd F. Olson. I opened the door and was immediately engaged by the shop’s rough, spare architecture and the array of beautiful objects for sale. And then I saw it, tucked away in the corner: an unassuming print of an illustration from Sig Olson’s book The Singing Wilderness. At his bedside during my Dad’s final days, I had read aloud passages from this book. I was transfixed. The shopkeeper came over and told me of the artisan letterpress Studio On Fire that had done the printing, the paper that was handmade in a shop down the street, and the frame that Mitrebox had created using wood from trees near my parents’ Grand Marais cabin. I now appreciated this as collaborative work of art – much more thought, care, and craft had been put into it than I had first appreciated. The truism “many hands make light work” is often referenced in the context of associations and the collective efforts of volunteers and staff. But those of us who live in the world of associations know that there’s so much more to it. Associations can facilitate not just efficiency but exponential collaboration, where the results are greater clarity, resonance, and inspiration; where outcomes compel thinking and acting in new ways; and where products so perfectly meet the needs and desires of those for whom they are designed that they seem bespoke. Everywhere I turn at AIA Minnesota, every door I open, I am delighted to find collaboration. It is in the work of the three local chapters and our committees and task forces. It is integral to Architecture MN magazine, the Homes By Architects Tour, and the annual Convention, and is core to our relationship with the University of Minnesota. Even more exciting, I am finding great potential to grow the power and impact of these and other collaborative efforts. As Sig Olson said, “Beauty is composed of many things and never stands alone.” Here’s to beauty borne of collaboration and to new adventures ahead. Earlier this summer, a quote on the shop window of Wilson & Willy’s in Minneapolis stopped me in my tracks:

“A new adventure is coming up and I’m sure it will be a good one.”

The truism “many hands make light work” is often referenced in the context of associations and the collective efforts of volunteers and

staff.

COMMITTEE UPDATES

MembershipA WARM WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS! The Membership Committee would like to welcome our newest members:

ITEMS FOR MEMBERSHIP APPROVAL Two key agenda items to be voted on by the membership at the AIA Minnesota Annual Meeting are a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among AIA Minnesota and all three local chapters (focused on formalizing and clarifying roles and responsibilities related to core member services) and proposed bylaws revisions. AIA Minnesota’s bylaws would be changed to conform with changes made to AIA’s bylaws (primarily related to governance and opening up more leadership opportunities to Associate AIA members) and to create more flexibility in the number of representatives of each local chapter on the AIA Minnesota board, as well as general, non-substantive updates to reflect recent practice and to correct grammatical errors. Similar and related changes are also being proposed for local chapter bylaws. In advance of the AIA Minnesota annual business meeting at Convention, members are encouraged to review the MOU and the proposed bylaws changes for AIA Minnesota and your local chapter; member approval of the MOU and revised bylaws will be on the agenda for all state and local chapters’ annual meetings this fall. For additional information and context, go to “Items for Membership Approval“ at http://www.aia-mn.org/about/overview/items-membership-approval/.

The AIA Minnesota Annual Meeting will be a held during the AIA Minnesota Annual Convention & Product Exposition, Minneapolis Convention Center, 1301 Second Ave. S., Minneapolis, Event 10, Tuesday, November 10 from 11:45 am to 2:15 pm.

Life of an Architect March 4-5, 2015, in DuluthPotentially one of the most read blogs about architecture, authored by a sole contributor, “Life of an Architect” is the creation of Dallas, Texas-based architect Bob Borson, AIA (pictured at right.) Bob’s weekly observations and advice on the profession are composed with wit, playfulness, musings (both deep and otherwise), and just the right amount of self-deprecation.

Bob is one of the six speakers joining us for our 2016 Lake Superior Design Retreat. Named 2009 AIA Dallas Young Architect of the Year, and a recipient of a 2015 Texas Society of Architects Honor Award for the work on his blog, Bob will share with us “his take” on what it means to practice architecture in the age of digital social media. We’ll also get to watch an architect from Texas deal with winter in Duluth...which may be entertainment enough!

LSDR speakers have been confirmed. Check them out and mark March 4th and 5th on your calendar to attend. Learn more at http://www.aia-mn.org/events/lsdr/speakers-2016/
