OCEAN DEBRIS OCEAN DEBRIS Ocean debris can also be called marine debris or marine litter. It is a human made waste that has purposefully or accidentally become afloat in a lake, the sea, ocean or waterway Some forms of debris such as driftwood, occur naturally, and human activities have been releasing similar materials into the oceans for THOUSANDS of years, but with increasing use of plastic, human waste has become an issue, as plastic is NOT biodegradable. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Many animals that live in the sea or the shore consume floating by mistake as it often looks like their usual pray. Plastic debris is when big and bulky plastic is hard to pass and may become permanently stuck inside their stomachs, blocking the passage for normal food to come through which can cause death from infection or starvation. Toxic additives used in the manufacture of plastic materials can leak out into their surroundings when it is in the water.

OCEAN DEBRIS

OCEAN DEBRISOcean debris can also be called marine debris or marine litter. It is a human made waste that has purposefully or accidentally become afloat in a lake, the sea, ocean or waterway

Some forms of debris such as driftwood, occur naturally, and human activities have been releasing similar materials into the oceans for THOUSANDS of years, but with increasing use of plastic, human waste has become an issue, as plastic is NOT biodegradable.

DEBRIS REMOVALLots of techniques are used to try to collect and remove marine debris by organisations and volunteers. some cities clean it up by hand but others use special beach special cleaning machines which collect the debris by the sea along the

coastline, so it is hard to get all the waste that is in the middle of the sea.

TYPES OF DEBRISA whole heap of stuff can become marine debris, and things that we use every day. Some things that are found are: plastic bags, balloons, buoys, rope, medical waste, glass bottles, plastic bottles, cigarette lighters and cigarettes them self, cans, fishing net and line, and other waste from cruise ships.Studies have shown that 80% of marine debris is plastic. Plastic is the worst type of debris because it is not biodegradable.Any debris that doesn't biodegrade (such as plastic) can float around and reach all oceans around the world this means it can kill about 100 000 sea turtles and sea mammals and approximately 1 000 000 sea creatures a year.
