What is Ocean Debris?

We have to know what it is first

Pieces of plastic, metal, and other man made materials that have become afloat

Rain can wash littered garbage to the ocean

Page 4: New Ocean Debris

Where Does Ocean Debris Come From?

Garbage is washed out to the Pacific through the sewers and rivers

Coastal cities will have garbage wash off the streets, to the beaches, then the ocean

All this garbage will end up on other beaches, especially Hawaii’s

Environmental Concerns

Animals tend to get the plastics and debris stuck in their digestive systems and also often feed it to their young.

Objects can pose dangers to everything and everyone.

Dead birds are found with everything from lighters to bottle caps.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The great pacific garbage patch is as big as Texas

It is formed by the currents forming a gyre compacting all of the garbage together

Everything can be found there, from lighters to children's toys

Page 7: New Ocean Debris

The Pacific Currents

• Currents all over the world form a gyre where garbage is compacted

• Underwater “tornadoes” that swirl around.
