These days, using the Internet is one of the most dangerous daily activities that you can undertake. Admittedly, the odds of bodily harm, other than carpal tunnel, are slim. The real danger lies in the potential impact web browsing can have on your personal identity and financial standing. Every computer connected to the Internet is a target of malware, viruses, and spyware, all of which are secretly installed onto your PC. The individuals

behind these have one purpose in mind - to collect personal information about you and make money from what they learn about you. The following information is intended to simplify the process for you; however if you are heavily time or tech challenged, you can hire an IT professional to implement many of these safety features for you. Having the list will ensure that you cover all your bases.

Here are seven things you can do that can help you avoid the dangers:

• Don’t have a good hardware firewall router. Not having a good, separate active hardware firewall between your PC and your modem will let hackers have access to your network. A firewall is designed to permit or deny network traffic based upon a set of rules and it protects your networks from unauthorized access while permitting legitimate communications to pass. You want the firewall to have Denial of Service (DoS) protection and use Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) to protect your network. (Just look for these on the box.)

• Don’t keep your Antivirus updated. With new viruses coming out every day, one sure way to get a virus is to not update your antivirus product. It’s bad enough that new viruses can get through prior to the software companies devising a way to stop them, but once a solution is devised, you want to get it. Update this daily. • Don’t have antispyware. Spyware infections are just as dangerous as viruses. They secretly collect pieces of information about you. With spyware present on your system, you may open yourself up to identity theft and credit card fraud. You

don’t want your PC “phoning home” with your personal information. Run an antispyware program at least weekly. • Don’t keep your web browser updated. It’s important to keep your web browser up-to-date with the latest patches. Patches are coming out much more frequently now than ever before. Familiarize yourself with the built-in safe surfing features, and tweak the settings to ensure a high degree of protection. The browser providers realize that they have competition and that customers are expecting them to help provide a safe browsing experience. Check for updates weekly. • Don’t keep Windows updated. Again, patch management is a key to keeping your systems secure. Microsoft sends out security updates once a month on “Patch Tuesday”. This is usually the second Tuesday of each month. Run the Windows Update as soon as they come out. This protects you from exploits to your from your OS, other Windows components, and the Microsoft Office Suite. Updates for other Windows products such as Microsoft Security Essentials (highly recommended) and Windows Defender are sent out much more frequently.

AQUA LOUNGE, one of the GOTCC’s newest members, hosted an After Hours Business Card Exchange in late August for the Greater Ocean Township and Asbury Park Chambers of Commerce. Aqua Lounge is a lovely restaurant and lounge located both inside and on the veranda of the historic Convention Hall in Asbury Park.

It was a beautiful summer’s eve, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in all its splendor, with the eclectic décor, delicious buffet and drink specials, After Hours events don’t get much better!

Over 100 people were in attendance, many new associations were formed and door prizes were given out.

This is the type of opportunity that makes belonging to a Chamber so important. Bringing new business people into the fold. Establishing new relationships. We are all familiar with the six degrees to Kevin Bacon; many unexpected associations surface when you network. And the GOTCC offers a mentoring program at our events - if you are not comfortable walking around meeting people on your own, tell us - and we will get the ball rolling for you! Next time, if you are unable to attend an event, send an associate. At Aqua, one business owner brought two of his employees to show them what networking is all about. Eventually, he will send them out on their own. Smart.

Hope to see you at our next breakfast on October 5th!

SEPTEMBER 2011 - Ocean Chamber News 9

With the fall of 2011 rolling in in a big way, earthquakes, hurricanes with tornados and record rains, high unemployment and politicians trying to take us back to the promised land, we could all use a bit of good news.

Well, the GOTCC has good news.

In these difficult of times, we have surpassed each event over last year, and have increased our membership in the last 18 months by 30%. Our Website has been upgraded, and many of our past Chamber Presidents have come back and are taking an active role. Two were recently acknowledged for their long-standing support by being inducted into our GOTCC Hall of Fame.

Our events have been exceptional, and we want to continue to grow and be strong. We recently co-sponsored an After Hours Business Card exchange with our Asbury Park Chamber neighbors, and a beautiful night it was on the deck of the Aqua Lounge on the veranda of the Convention Center. With over 100 attendees, our members were happy to mix, mingle and network. As always, I invite you to check out our Website and join us at our next event. We look forward to meeting new members and learning how we can work together in our community.

It was a beautiful day for our Golf Outing on September 12th at Jumping Brook Country Club in Neptune. Co-Chaired by Nick Gradone of Atlantic Kitchen & Bath and Kathy King of Central Jersey Bank, with the assistance of their committee and our Executive Director, all worked hard to make it a nice day to remember. We would all like to thank our golfers and sponsors who made this event possible.

Now that our Golf Outing is behind us, we look forward to our next big event. November 11th is our Comedy Night & Mini Gift Auction scholarship fundraiser at Branches. Last year was our most well attended year ever - and this year, we look forward to once again breaking all records… everyone needs a laugh and a stress-reducing night out! Stay tuned for more details next month, but for now save the date, tell your friends and associates, and reserve a table or two! People are still buzzing about how great it was last year - and you cannot beat the price anywhere! You can pay the same amount of money for a ticket to see local comedians. For $50 per person, you get a cheese and fruit station, open bar for house beer and wine, buffet dinner with carving station, dessert and coffee and three national touring comedians! And this event makes a great night to treat clients, pamper potential clients, reward employees, use tickets as an employee incentive sales program, celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just get together with friends and family. Ticket prices will go up to $60 on November 5th so don’t wait to book! We do expect to sell out this year! And let’s not forget - it’s for the kids!

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,Nicholas A. Blanda, CMB NMLS #227173President, GOTCCSenior Loan Officer & Reverse Mortgage [email protected]

Presidential Pause• Click on Pop ups. Never click on a pop up – whether it is from an antivirus program, Adobe, some other software, or any other so-called updates. Always go to the website directly to update any programs on your PC. Follow this golden rule -> If you are not sure, or even if you are sure, never ever click. • Click on a link in an Email – especially if they are from a bank, credit card company, or services like PayPal. Only click on these if you want to let the world have your personal information. Never believe an email. Always go directly to the website by opening up a new browser session and do whatever you need to do. The same goes for Emails from social media sites.

Identifying where a link goes. One trick - If you hover over a link with your mouse, is should display the destination website in the bottom left or right of your web browser. Be sure to look at the last “www” address if there is more than one, as the last is the destination website.

Example:www.website.com/..../www.badwebsite.com

Here is a link where you can find some great information and explanations about malware - http://www.kaspersky.com/threats_faq.
