Corporations Who are Trying to Influence the Votes of Their Employees Mount Vernon O Oct 22Yith evident bitterness of feeling which up to the present time has been absent from his political speeches William Jennings Bryan In his final Ohio speech at Newark yesterday scathing- ly ¬ denounced General Manager Van Winkle Vice President Scharff and Albert Ingalls of the Vanderbilt rail ¬ way systems for the alleged coercion of their shop and other employees on the Big Four Lake Shore and XeW York Central systems He said the action of these men was coercion I pure and simple and should be pun- ished ¬ by law being a crime against their franchise Albert Ingalls is a soninlaw of Charles P Taft Bryan decided to plunge at once into the New York campaign He will give to- day ¬ to West Virginia and then go to New York arriving there Friday LAKE WEIR An accident whic hcame near being a tragedy happened on Friday last at the vineyard of Messrs Hosteller Lehman Sparks from an engine on the South Lake Weir branch of the Seaboard railway set tire to grass along side the track and a high wind spread it into the vineyard a large part of which was badly damaged The fire when discovered was sweeping rapidly toward the buildings which were surrounded by Inflammable ma ¬ terial Mr Lehman succeeded by al ¬ most superliuman efforts in ex- tinguishing ¬ the fire He says that time after time he thought the buildings I must go During the fire the horses became frantic with fear and scream- ed ¬ loudly Mrs Lehman ran out to open the gate of the lot to liberate them but fell insensible and lay where she would surely have been burned had the fire not been ex- tinguished ¬ When Mr Lehman readi- ed ¬ the house in an exhausted condi- tion ¬ he found his wife just recovering consciousness
