1. Introduction The Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series Customer Expectations Document contains information about the features and capabilities of the Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series. This document should be used as part of the presale and preinstallation planning processes to help clarify the requirements and responsibilities associated with supporting, owning, and operating the Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series. It is also recommended that those interested in purchasing the Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series have, and familiarize themselves with, the information in this document prior to making their purchase.

2. Product Overview The Canon Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series consists of the VarioPrint 6160/6200/6250/6320 Ultra+ and TP+, and the 6160/6200/6250 MICR+ (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) models. These models are digital duplex cut-sheet printers that are powered by the Océ Gemini Instant Duplex technology that simultaneously presses images into both sides of the paper in a single pass, delivering accurate registration and offset-class quality. These models bring the following capabilities and features to users in a high-volume print environment.

2.1. VarioPrint 6000 Ultra+ Series • Prints two-sided LTR (Letter-size) documents in up to 306 ipm (images per

minute) on LTR (Letter) paper, depending on the license set purchased. • Supports up to 12 paper trays with a total paper capacity of 13,800 sheets, and a

roll feeder1

• Supports up to three stackers, a finisher, and other external finishers.

(the roll feeder acts as a third PIM). If the Duo Paper Tray option is attached, the total paper capacity is increased to approximately 24,000 sheets.

• Supports a large range of media, media sizes, and media weights. • Print operations can expand services to include high-volume applications, such

as books, course materials, training and technical manuals, booklets, catalogs, variable data printing, and trans-promotional printing.

1 If the roll feeder is attached, only two PIMs can be installed.

IMPORTANT • The Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series was created to be modular in design. Floor

space, budget, monthly copy/print volume, and applications will determine which configuration works best.

• The Ultra+ large configuration includes the Main Unit (print engine), IIM, High Capacity Stacker 2.1 (x3), PIM-A1 (x3). Only one DFD (Document Finishing Device) can also be attached to this configuration.

• The TP+ or MICR+ large configuration includes the Main Unit (print engine), IIM, High Capacity Stacker 2.1 (x3), PIM-A1 (x3), and Print Guard 3 Units (x2) (standard on the TP+ and MICR+ models).

• If the HCS 2.1 with Set Finisher is installed on the machine, the height of the machine increases to 85” (2,159 mm).

• The optional Lasermax Roll Feeder is not shown in the configuration diagrams above. If the Lasermax Roll Feeder is attached to the machine, the customer can only attach a maximum of two (2) PIM-A1s.

• Only one online finishing device can be connected to the DFD-2 interface. • Make sure that approximately 86.7” (2,202 mm) of space is provided around the

front, and approximately 39.4” (1,000 mm) of space is provided around the left and right sides and the rear of the machine for the proper servicing of the equipment.

• The floor must be level (with no bows) for the stabilization and support of the machine.

• The machine should not be moved once it is in place.

3.5 Floor Structure Requirements The floor on which this machine is installed must have strength of at least 100 lb/ft2 (488 kg/m2). If the floor does not have this level of strength, consult a building contractor before installing the machine. The weight of the machine is distributed on the floor through the adjusters and wheels. Do not install the machine on an unstable floor or platform.

3.6 Network Connectivity A standard 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet interface (RJ-45 jack) for device installation, monitoring, ships standard with all configurations. A USB 2.0 High-Speed interface port ships standard with all configurations via the operating panel for direct connection to centralized environments that want to drive all jobs through a single host PC.

IMPORTANT • If the machine configuration has multiple PIMs or HCS stackers attached, up to

three PIMs can use one power strip or quad box that contains separate 115 V AC power outlets for each module (on the left side of the engine). Up to three HCS stackers, can use one power strip or quad box that contains separate 115 V AC power outlets for each module (on the right side of the engine). The use of power strips or quad boxes also provides a power source for service tools, such as a technician’s laptop computer or vacuum; however, it is up to the customer to provide a separate 115 V AC power source for this purpose.

• Use only dedicated and properly grounded outlets for the main unit. It is also strongly suggested to use dedicated and properly grounded outlets for each optional accessory. Do not use extension cords. The ground connection serves to provide the internal electronics with a reference voltage. Faulty or poor ground sources will cause this reference voltage to fall into a range that no longer serves as a reliable reference voltage. The internal logic and programming of the VarioPrint 6000+ Series machines will not perform reliably because there is an insufficient difference between the internal operating signal voltages and the poor ground reference signal. A qualified electrician can measure and provide the ground source that the VarioPrint 6000+ Series machines or any computer controlled office equipment requires.

• Before installation, confirm that all necessary receptacles are available. NOTE

The power and dimension specifications for the Print Guard or MEM should be supplied between the print engine and HCS.

5. Environmental Factors and Requirements When installing the VarioPrint 6000+ Series machines the environmental conditions of the room where the machine is located should be as described in the table below.

Optimum Temperature Range Between 62.6°F (17°C) and 82.4°F (28°C)

Optimum Humidity Range Between 20% and 80% Relative Humidity Atmospheric Pressure Less than 1,000 m (3,280.8’) (898.7 hPa or 0.887 atm) Noise (sound level) Run (Operating) Condition: 78 dB; Standby: 58 dB

Ozone Emissions VP6160+, 6200+, 6250+: Approximately 0.2 mg/hour VP6320+: Approximately 0.3 mg/hour

NOTE • In certain areas of the country and during certain times of the year, it may be

necessary to use a humidifier or dehumidifier to attain the proper humidity levels for optimal machine performance. There is a risk that productivity and paper feeding may be affected if the machine is operated outside of these guidelines.

• The machine should not be installed in locations with significant shifts in temperature or humidity. Areas containing water, or equipment that can significantly alter room temperature or humidity, such as a heater, stove, or portable air conditioner, should be avoided, unless proper environmental control is available to achieve maximum productivity or quality capability.

5.1 Temperature and Humidity The optimal humidity range for storing paper is 30% to 70% RH (Relative Humidity) with a room temperature of 68°F to 80.6°F (20°C to 27°C). Storing paper in a location that does not meet these specifications may affect paper feeding and image quality. For example, if the humidity is too high, paper curling and paper jams will increase. If the humidity is too low, paper may shrink or lose resistance, and toner will not adhere to the paper as well. Only use paper that has fully acclimatized to the environment in which the machine is installed. Using paper that has been stored in a different environment (with a different temperature and humidity), may cause paper jams or result in poor print quality.

5.2. Temperature Gradient If a sudden temperature change occurs, it may have an adverse affect on image positioning. Sudden temperature changes may cause the paper to bend or contract, cause the machine to malfunction, and form condensation. Every effort should be made to maintain consistent temperature and humidity levels in the operating environment at all times for the VarioPrint 6000+ Series machines. If a humidifier must be used to regulate the humidity, use one that has a mineral filter on it.

Page 22: Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series Ultra+, TP+, and MICR+downloads.canon.com/isg_documents/Oce_VarioPrint_6… ·  · 2013-12-022.3 VarioPrint 6000 MICR+ Series ... Service Manual) procedure.

Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Customer Expectations Document

5.3 Ventilation Ensure that there is an air exchange rate of at least 300 m3 per hour, and at least 2,649 ft3 (75 m3) of space in the location where the machine will be installed.

5.4 Optimal Elevation Install the machine at an elevation below 3,280.8’ (1,000 m) (898.7 hPa) for optimal machine performance.

5.5 Lighting Canon USA recommends installing the machine in a location with at least 500 lux of lighting 29 1/2” (750 mm) above the floor for normal operations and maintenance.

5.6 Sunlight Avoid installing the machine in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight has adverse effects on toner consistency and image quality. If direct sunlight is unavoidable, use curtains to shade the machine. Make sure that the curtains do not block the machine’s ventilation slots or louvers, or interfere with the electrical cord or power supply.

5.7 Ammonia Avoid installing the machine where ammonia is emitted. In a sufficient amount, ammonia will attack the surfaces of the machine’s paper feed and image quality components, thereby shortening their useful life and increasing the need for periodic and remedial maintenance. A professional assessment of the air quality in the room in which the machine is to be installed is recommended prior to its installation.

9. KOM (Key Operator Maintenance) Program The KOM program enables the customer (key operator) to perform limited service on the VarioPrint 6000+ Series products. In addition to changing toner, the key operator can replace the spiral cleaners, clear paper jams in the hot area, clean the OPC belt, and adjust the paper quality factor, as required, based on the part life and service alerts displayed on the Operator Panel. Canon USA highly recommends utilizing the KOM program as a method to maintain machine uptime and reduce service technician labor costs.

9.1 Program Benefits The KOM program provides an opportunity to increase customer satisfaction by providing customers with greater control over the machine’s uptime and productivity. Active maintenance by the customer, benefits the service organization by reducing work and travel time for the service technician. A reduction in labor and travel enables the service technician to focus on other machines that may require greater attention and time.

9.2 Training The servicing dealer is responsible for the implementation and delivery of training to the key operator prior to starting the KOM program. There are two KOM Levels: • Level 1: The key operator is trained during regular training. • Level 2: The field technician actively trains the key operator during

installation.

9.5 Operator Safety Customer safety is of the highest priority and concern when using the KOM program. While performing service, safety guidelines are very important to follow. Safety guidelines cover three specific areas:

WARNING Certain parts of the Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series emit a strong magnetic field and are a danger to customers with pacemakers. While the machine is being serviced by a service technician, customers with pacemakers are not allowed in the service technician’s work area.

9.5.1 Personal Safety

Each operator is ultimately responsible for his or her own personal safety. To minimize personal risk of injury, the operator must follow the guidelines below at all times while conducting operator maintenance: • Take notice of all posted Safety Labels outside and inside the machine. • Follow all instructions when replacing parts. • Always wear heat-resistant gloves when replacing the Spiral Cleaners. • Use correct lifting techniques. Use two (2) or more people to lift parts

weighing more than 50 lb (22.7 kg). • Remove loose clothing and jewelry. • Wear proper footwear when lifting equipment. • Do not eat, drink, or smoke near the equipment. • Clean hands after contact with toner. Do not touch your eyes if toner is on

your hands. • Do not wash or use hot water to remove toner from clothing. Doing so can set

the toner into the fabric. Quickly vacuum (using an approved vacuum for toner pickup), or brush the affected clothing with light strokes.

• Some surfaces are hot and require a wait time to allow the area to cool before servicing.

9.5.2 Equipment Safety

When powering down the VarioPrint, service technicians or trained operators should always power OFF the system from the power button located on the top of the VarioPrint near the base of the operator panel. When working inside the machine, take special care to: • Avoid contact with sharp edges. • Pay special attention when two or more persons are performing maintenance

on the VarioPrint. • Make sure all personnel are clear when starting the machine.

10.1 Consumable Parts Consumable parts are defined as those parts having a limited life that will be reached during a customer’s specific machine operation, and then should be replaced as needed. Examples of consumable parts include, but are not limited to feed rollers, cleaning blades, and fixing assembly components. An estimated consumable parts life can be provided by a service technician to assist in the initial parts/supplies planning. A consumable part’s life expectancy is directly related to usage factors, such as paper size, paper quality, environment, usage application, and machine maintenance. Therefore, consumable parts do not have a warranty, and Canon U.S.A., Inc. cannot guarantee a minimum life.

29 Based on 20 lb LTR size paper, and under the above optimal environmental conditions.

13. Optimum Monthly Product Performance The table below describes the differences between the optimum PV (Print Volume) and maximum PV. Please note that the numbers in the table are for reference purposes only, and depend strongly on a mostly duplex print environment, the type of media selected, and environmental conditions. For information on the optimal environmental conditions for the machine, see “Environmental Factors and Requirements,” on p. 20.

Monthly PV Type Description Number of LTR Prints

Optimum PV

VP6160+ This is the print volume range that the equipment was intended to run on a regular basis to maintain a high level of performance and print quality. Running the equipment within this range ensures that no undue stress is placed on components, and it allows time for the proper servicing and maintenance of the equipment.

300,000 to 2.5 million

VP6200+ 500,000 to 5 million

VP6250+ 750,000 to 8 million

VP6320+ 1 million to 10 million

Maximum PV

VP6160+ This is the maximum number of pages the machine can produce within a one-month period. However, sustained use of the machine at this print level will impact the long term performance and durability of the machine. It is recommended to stay within the optimum print volume to reduce a possible increase in servicing and maintenance issues.

2.5 million

VP6200+ 5 million

VP6250+ 8 million

VP6320+ 10 million

IMPORTANT If the machine consistently runs at or above the upper end of the optimum PV, consider purchasing additional machines or higher volume machines.

14. Machine Reliability and Productivity This chapter describes the reliability and productivity of the Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series.

14.1 Print Speed The table below describes the printing speeds one should expect when printing simplex or duplex documents on the indicated standard paper sizes and types.

NOTE

Please note that 300 mm x 500 mm is not a standard paper size, and requires the optional Paper Input Module 350x500mm-A1.

14.2 Mixed Media Productivity

The Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series is capable of processing jobs that contain mixed media; however, the machine’s productivity may be reduced if one or more of the following print conditions occur during a job run: • Using certain finishing modes, such as punching or folding • Using the Paper Quality Mode

Page 50: Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series Ultra+, TP+, and MICR+downloads.canon.com/isg_documents/Oce_VarioPrint_6… ·  · 2013-12-022.3 VarioPrint 6000 MICR+ Series ... Service Manual) procedure.

14.3 Paper and Toner The operator can maintain productivity by removing, replacing, and refilling the paper and toner while the machine is running. The paper trays can also be opened and refilled during operation. The tray that is used by the machine during production, however, will be locked. Once the job completes, or the machine switches to another tray, the empty tray unlocks, allowing the operator to prepare for the next job, and add more paper. No productivity is affected, and jobs finish quicker. The drawers will not always run dry when switching. Similar to the paper, toner may be added while a job is printing. Therefore, productivity and image quality are not affected, and jobs finish in the same amount of time.

15.3 Advanced Media Settings The Advanced media settings are for customers who want to use advanced print settings to avoid certain print quality issues. The following settings can be adjusted from the operator panel through System > Setup > Advanced media settings. The table below describes the Advanced media settings and each setting’s description.

Setting Description

Pre-printed mode Select if pre-printed media is being used without following the recommended guidelines for pre-printed media. This mode reduces the print speed.

Paper quality Specify the Paper quality mode to improve the print quality if low-quality paper is being used to avoid leaving uneven, dark areas on the prints.

15.4 Paper Handling and Storage

• The permissible humidity range for paper storage is 20% to 70% (with a room

temperature of 50°F to 86°F (10°C to 30°C)). Storing paper in a location that does not meet these specifications may affect paper feeding and image quality.

• Only use paper that has fully acclimatized to the environment in which the machine is installed. Using paper that has been stored in a different environment (with a different temperature and humidity), may cause paper jams or result in poor print quality.

• We recommend using paper immediately after opening the package. • Before loading paper, make sure to fan the sheets thoroughly so that air runs

through the sheets, as shown in the diagrams below.

Page 54: Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series Ultra+, TP+, and MICR+downloads.canon.com/isg_documents/Oce_VarioPrint_6… ·  · 2013-12-022.3 VarioPrint 6000 MICR+ Series ... Service Manual) procedure.

15.5 Selecting the Correct Media and Pre-Printed Media A media guide is available that provides detailed information on the recommended media, such as acceptable paper, paper specifications, and acceptable storage and print conditions. For more information, contact your servicing dealer. Pre-printed media can also be used successfully, as long as the inks comply with the Pre-Printed Guidelines outlined in the Guidelines for Offset Pre-Printed Media – Océ Copy Press Technology document.

IMPORTANT If non-recommended ink or drying powder, not suitable for digital printing, were used to create the pre-printed media, damage to important parts of the printing system may occur, or the digital printing performance can seriously deteriorate. This can result in increased downtime and additional service costs. To ensure optimal performance on pre-printed media, review the Guidelines for Offset Pre-Printed Media – Océ Copy Press Technology document.

15.6 Note for Customers Who Cut Their Own Paper

Customers who cut their own paper may experience: • An increase of paper dust in the machine • Paper jams due to paper dust getting into areas of the machine where it is not

meant to be • Improper paper feeding • Paper registration inaccuracies Follow the precautions below to minimize the above issues: • Use a rotary blade. • Have a process in place to regularly make sure that the cutting blades are

sharpened, and that cuts are made as clean as possible. • Place the paper with the factory mill cut sides facing to the right (leading edge),

and to the front of the machine when feeding paper. The best results for consistency and front-to-back registration are obtained by using factory mill cut, digital compatible paper.

15.7 Paper Grain and Curl Paper grain and curl can dramatically affect the reliability of the Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Series machines. If paper jams or poor print quality occur when paper is fed from the Paper Input Modules, paper curl is often the cause. The paper stiffness, direction of curl, and amount of curl have a strong influence on how well the paper is transported through the machine. If paper is curled, straighten out the paper by gently curling it in the opposite direction to which it is curled. Paper stiffness depends on the direction of the paper grain. Paper tends to curl in the direction parallel to the grain.

IMPORTANT • When using LTR or smaller paper sizes we recommend using paper with a grain

parallel to the long edge (A). For paper sizes larger than 11” x 17”, we recommend using paper with a grain parallel to the short edge (B). When using coated paper thinner than 105 g/m2, we recommend using paper with a grain perpendicular to the feeding direction of the paper.

• If 12 point, 243 g/m2 paper is used to stitch books or booklets, it is best to use paper that is cross-grained. Thick, long grain paper does not fold as easily. Cross-grained paper is more flexible, resulting in a smoother crease along the direction of the fold.
