Mirrors and Windows is a portrait series by Italian photographers GabrieleGalimberti and Edoardo Dilelle that draws insight into the lives of women

across the world based on their intimate living spaces. Like the work of RaniaMatar, this collaborative effort presents a number of young women fromdifferent countries and social standings who have invited the photographersinto their bedrooms to capture them in their personal space. While some havecountless possessions, living in the lap of luxury, others are clearly not asfortunate.

The project states: "In a world that is increasingly shaped by global standardizationand IKEA aesthetics, this work explores the rooms of the conventional and theeccentric, the rich and the poor, the mother and the single, the pious and theunbelieving, the sports-obsessed and the shopping-addicted, the tomboy andthe girly-girl, the tidy and the shambolic These bedrooms are the mirrors ofthe history, personality, culture, obsessions and social status of the girls thatoccupy them, but are also unique windows into these young womens worlds."

Interview Juniper Kisses What inspired you to start your business? I have always been into art and making things, I started making flower crowns

first when popular teen shops like New Look And Top shop started to sell themafter being inspired by Singer Lana Del Rey.

How did you start your business and how hard was it to start? Before starting my business I had a trial where I made a few flower crowns

giving them to friends to see if they were good enough to sell. The feedback Ireceived was positive and this gave me enough confidence to set up a sellingaccount on a art based selling website called Etsy. The website was easy touse and I soon got used to making and selling flower crowns. I now sellpersonalized flower crowns and also have branched out into jewellery.

How Important is social networking to your business Social Networking was so important for the selling of my products, without it I

wouldnt have had to confidence to sell anywhere else. It allowed me to get mybusiness out and allow people to view my products online and get more viewson my business.

    Shoot 2 - Location

I chose to shoot these photos in the locationwere work was being done after being inspiredby Arnold Newman.

Also like Arnold I chose for the flowers to be themain subject within the portrait and theflorist in the background.

I didnt feel comfortable with going into astrangers house alone so I waited for the

holidays and went with my mother.Florist was happy for portraits to be taken andmade shoot very enjoyable.

    Reason behind my lightingchoice

I wanted my lighting to be artistic

and have a lot of contrast this wasinspired by a portrait i had seenbefore of Steve Jobs by Albert

Watson. Jobs didnt look immediately at Watson, but lookedinstead at the set-up and then focused on Watsons4 ! 5 camera like it was something dinosauric,

Watson recalls, and he said, Wow, youre shootinglm.

I said, I dont feel like digital is quite here yet. Andhe said, I agree, then he turned and looked at me andsaid, But well get there.

Jobs gave Watson about an hourmuch longer thanhe ever gave most photographers for a portrait

session. [...] I said, Think about the next project youhave on the table, and I asked him also to think aboutinstances where people have challenged him.

If you look at that shot, you can see the intensity. Itwas my intention that by looking at him, that you knewthis guy was smart, Watson says, adding, I heardlater that it was his favorite photograph of all time.

Critical AppraisalMy project was based on artists in medway and also artists that use social networking to sell, Networkor for portfolio work, throughout my research i have gained a knowledge that has even allowed me toimprove my own website. The information i have learnt has fuelled my images and i am happy with mynal outcome, even though i like my nal images getting to the stage to take the nal images has beena problem and this project has pushed me out of my comfort zone when talking to people specially withthe model i am taking images of. A key skill i found i had to improve on within this project was getting incontact with the people i wanted to shoot and this did cause me a lot of trouble at the start of the projecthowever i soon resolved the problem and pushed myself to seek people by using social networking andemail. Another problem i faced when organising shoots was people cancelling on me last minute, thisoften caused a big problem for me and i just learned to move on and nd a alternative. The linkbetween art and social networking is strong and through my research i have found out just howimportant the internet can be to network and share not just photographers work but artists, fashiondesigners and many more. If i had the chance to progress this unit further i would nd more artists inmedway that use social network and also i would have printed a few more prints for example i wouldhave printed two of Dawns Flowers.

This project most importantly has taught me how important it is to network with other artists, photographers, fashion designers, stylists, makeup artists and so many more this is made easier withthe use of social networking.

    The Object

My still life will be based on the myth of beauty, how images of beauty can be used against usand the social pressure to look good. I willlook into topics like image manipulation,

Retouching and 'Airbrushing'. I will investigatehow this can change our idea of beauty andhow we feel we should look.I plan to usemanipulation within my images for my stilllife, for example i could use natural objectslike flowers or fruit and manipulate them tosignify how we change ourselves to fit acertain look, i will look into symbolism also.

Real women are more beautiful than any manmade portrayal can ever be. Why?Because we're human beings with fascinating quirks and irresistible flaws, whereas a lot of the images of women we see in the media are about as humanas plastic Barbie dolls.

Within this image i liked how the image seemedinnocent and pretty however if the signs withinthe image are read correctly the meaning of theimage can completely change and mean a wholenew thing. For example Jan Davidsz haspainted a beautiful image but this is only whenthe persons attention is drawn to the flowers.Looking closer at the image we start to noticesmall signs and little significant objects thathave a special meaning within the still life.

This drew my attention because i wanted asimilar theme within my still life. At first glancei want my still life to be beautiful but whenanalysed deeper it can have a more complexmeaning.

    Vanitas

    54

In the arts, vanitas is a type of symbolic work of art especially associated with still life painting

in the 16th and 17th centuries, though also common in other places and periods. The latin word means vanity and looselytranslated corresponds to the meaninglessness of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

    Vanitas in modern times

    C. Allan Gilbert, All Is Vanity , drawing, 1892 Alexander de Cadenet, Skull Portraits , 1996 present, various subjects Damien Hirst, For the Love of God , sculpture (A diamond skull), 2007

Common vanitas symbols include skulls, which are a reminder of the certainty of death; rotten fruit, which symbolizesdecay; bubbles, which symbolize the brevity of life and suddenness of death; smoke, watches, and hourglasses, whichsymbolize the brevity of life; and musical instruments, which symbolize brevity and the ephemeral nature of life. Fruit,

owers and butteries can be interpreted in the same way, and a peeled lemon, as well as accompanying seafood was, likelife, attractive to look at, but bitter to taste. There is debate among art historians as to how much, and how seriously, thevanitas theme is implied in still-life paintings without explicit imagery such as a skull. As in much moralistic genre paintingthe enjoyment evoked by the sensuous depiction of the subject is in a certain conict with the moralistic message

The research i put into vanitas proved tobe very important within my still life, manyVanitas showed themes of death and decaythrough everyday objects and signs forexample the use of skulls and dead fruit. The research i did into vanitas still life was

essential within my project because iwanted my still life to have a more complexmeaning the more a person analysed theimage.

The beautiful mask symbolises our use of makeup and covering out naturalself to please others or fit in with everyone else or a specific style.

Critical AppraisalWhen starting research for my still life project i had a clear theme that i knew i wanted to do, this was due to my topic being a strong

and not uncommon illness or issue with many people around my age. With even myself being subject to bullying because oflooks and appearance this project was really been shaped by my own personal experience with beauty and how we see ourselvesor how we think we should look.My own personal experience has denitely fuelled my research into my topic and i found i have looked at this from a point of viewthat understands what its like and know how painful/scary of a topic this subject can really be. I knew before starting this projecthow much the media is fuelling our beauty myths but after the research done throughout this project i have became much moreaware of other issues leading off from my topic like self harm and eating disorders and how serious this issue is becoming. Iwanted my images to reect my topic in a way that many people who have experienced having issues with their self like low selfesteem etc could understand for example one of my favourite song lyrics is

T e mirror can lieDoesn't show you what's insideAnd it, it can tell you you're full of lifeIt's amazing what you can hideJust by putting on a smile

My image re ected this in a way that we all try to hide who we are, whether this be by makeup or expensive clothing, when i rstimagined my theme i instantly had a few ideas of imagery within my head that i wanted to achieve and this was my mask idea to showhow we o f en cover ourselves to hide who we are.

Analysis of shootI do like my nal print however if given the chance to do this again i would have experimented more with di ff erent materials andcolours also looking into symbolism a little more to put my theme over more, i would also re evaluate my composition and try theshot in di ff erent angles to make it a little more interesting, i would also have liked to experiment with lighting and the e ff ect lightingcan have when developing an image.
