g Gill SansThe original design appeared in 1926 when Douglas

Cleverdon opened his own bookshop in his home town of Bristol, where Eric Gill painted the fascia over the window in sans-serif capitals that would be later be known as Gill Sans. In addition, Gill had sketched a design for the publisher and bookseller Douglas Cleverdon, intended as a guide for Cleverdon to make future notices and announcements.

Gill further developed it into a complete font family after Stanley Morison commissioned the development Gill Sans to combat the families of Erbar, Futura and Kabel which were being launched in Germany during the latter 1920s. Gill Sans was later released in 1928 by Monotype Corporation.

Gill Sans became popular when in 1929 when Cecil Dandridge commissioned Eric Gill to produce Gill Sans to be used on the London and North Eastern Railway for a unique typeface for all the LNER’s posters and publicity material.

Stupid people should have to wear signs that just say, “I’m Stupid” That way you wouldn’t rely on them, would you? Youwouldn’t ask them anything. It would be like, “Excuse me...oops, never mind. I didn’t see your sign.” ...

It’s like before my wife and I moved. Our house was full of boxes and there was a U-Haul truck in our driveway. My friend comes over and says, “Hey, you moving?” “Nope. We just pack our stuff up once ortwice a week to see how many boxes it takes. Here’s your sign.”

A couple of months ago I went fishing with a buddy of mine, we pulled his boat into the dock, I lifted up this big ‘ol stringer of bass and this idiot on the dock goes, “Hey, y’all catch all them fish?” “Nope we Talked ‘em into giving up. Here’s your sign.”

I was watching one of those animal shows on the Discovery Channel. There was a guy inventing a shark bite suit. And there’s only one way to test it. “all right Jimmy, you got that shark suit on, it looks good...They want you to jump into this pool of sharks, and you tell us if it hurts when they bite you.” “Well, all right, but hold my sign. I don’t wanna lose it.”

Myriad was designed by Carol Twombly and Robert Slimbach in 1992, a clear and legible sans serif typeface. Myriad makes a good text face as well as providing flexibility for filling display needs in all sizes and mediums.

Myriad was first issued in 1992 as a multiple master Type 1 font family, which worked with a compliant font renderer to allow the user to generate variations in a wide range of widths and weights. Myriad MM was discontinued in 2003.

Since the launch of the eMac in 2002, Myriad replaced Apple Garamond as Apple Inc.’s corporate font. It is now used in all of its marketing and on its products. More recent iterations of the iPod (from the iPod photo onward) have used Podium Sans, which has similarities with Myriad (as opposed to Chicago), for its user interface. A different humanist sans-serif typeface, Lucida Grande, is used as the system font for Apple’s Mac OS X operating system. Myriad was included with 3rd generation of iPod.

Cla redonan English slab-serif typeface that was created

in England by Robert Besley for the Fann Street Foundry in 1845.[1] Besley went as far as trying to patent the typeface, and Clarendon is now known as the first registered typeface. However, the patents at the time lasted only three years; as soon as the typeface became popular, it was copied by other foundries.[2] The original matrices and punches remained at Stephenson Blake and later resided at the Type Museum, London. They were marketed by Stephenson Blake as Consort, though some additional weights (a bold and italics) were cut in the 1950s.

It was named after the Clarendon Press in Oxford. The typeface was reworked by the Monotype foundry in 1935. It was revised by Hermann Eidenbenz in 1953.

g Baskerville

a transitional serif typeface designed in 1757 by John Baskerville (1706-1775) in Birmingham, England. Baskerville is classified as a transitional typeface, positioned between the old style typefaces of William Caslon, and the modern styles of Giambattista Bodoni and Firmin Didot.

The Baskerville typeface is the result of John Baskerville’s intent to improve upon the types of William Caslon. He increased the contrast between thick and thin strokes, making the serifs sharper and more tapered, and shifted the axis of rounded letters to a more vertical position. The curved strokes are more circular in shape, and the characters became more regular. These changes created a greater consistency in size and form.

Baskerville’s typeface was the culmination of a larger series of experiments to improve legibility which also included paper making and ink manufacturing.

a heavily weighted, old style serif typeface designed by Rodrigo Moraes in 1921 and released by the Barnhart Brothers & Spindler type foundry in 1922. The typeface is drawn as an extra bold weight of Cooper Old Style. Though not based on a single historic model it exhibits influences of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and the Machine Age. Cooper Black is a heavier version of Cooper Old Style which enjoyed particular popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, and also became somewhat iconic of the 1970s The Cooper Old Style family was advertised as being for far-sighted printers with near-sighted customers. It is notable for being the typeface used on the cover of Pet Sounds, which is widely regarded as one of the most influential albums ever released.

atypewriter

The typewriter was patented in 1868 by Christopher Latham Sholes, who sold his rights to the Remington Arms Company in 1873. The first typewriters were initially thought to be replacements for printing and so typewriter keybars utilized printing types; monospaced typefaces, that is, those designed so every letter takes up the same amount of space were a more practical alternative and soon replaced printing types.

Monospaced designs are still in use as typewriter typefaces today. In 1974, Joel Kaden and Tony Stan adapted the friendliness and immediacy of typewriter letter styles into a proportionally spaced typeface, ITC American Typewriter.

a Optima

A humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Hermann Zapf between 1952-1955 for the D. Stempel AG foundry, Frankfurt, Germany.

Though classified as a sans-serif, Optima has a subtle swelling at the terminal producing a suggestion of a glyphic serif. Optima’s design follows humanist lines, but its italic variant is merely an oblique, essentially a sloped roman without characteristic italic letterforms such as a single storey a and rounded base of v and w. This is more typical of a realist sans-serif such as Helvetica or Univers. Also unconventional for the contemporary sans, Optima’s capitals (like Palatino’s) are directly derived from the classic Roman monumental capital model (one other well executed example is Meier’s Syntax).

aPrestigeelite

Prestige Elite is a slab serif monospaced typeface originally intended for use on a typewriter. It was designed in 1953 by Howard Kettler for IBM.

Prestige Elite is a good choice for price lists, tabular material, and informal office correspondence. Typefaces that were originally designed as monospaced typewriter types are effective in materials for personal communication or for capturing the look and feel of bygone days.

I didn’t see your sign.” It’s like before my wife and I moved. Our house was full of boxes and there was a U-Haul truck in our driveway. My friend comes over and says, “Hey, you moving?” “Nope. aCaslon

Caslon’s earliest design dates to 1722[1]. Caslon is cited as the first original typeface of English origin, but some type historians point out the close similarity of Caslon’s design to the Dutch Fell types.

The Caslon types were distributed throughout the British Empire, including British North America. Much of the decayed appearance of early American printing is thought to be due to oxidation caused by long exposure to seawater during transport from England to the Americas. Caslon’s types were immediately successful and used in many historic documents, including the U.S. Declaration of Independence. After William Caslon I’s death, the use of his types diminished, but saw a revival between 1840–80 as a part of the British Arts and Crafts movement. For many years a common rule of thumb of printers and typesetters was “when in doubt, use Caslon,” particularly if no typeface was specified.

I was watching one of those animal shows on the Discovery Channel. There was a guy inventing a shark bite suit. And there’s only one way to test it. “all right Jimmy, you got that shark suit on, it looks good...They want you to jump into this pool of sharks, and you tell us if it hurts when they bite you.”
