COLLEGE PRAYER
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear O’Loughlin Community,
Sport can be brilliant.
Over the past two weeks I have witnessed some fantastic sport, such as exciting games, individual sporting brilliance and courageous team efforts. Sport can offer us so much: personal and professional development, social awareness and connection, emotional understanding, triumphing over the odds, setting and reaching goals, etc. Learning how to be humble in victory and magnanimous in defeat is one of the greatest lessons we can learn. Sport has certainly been a significant factor in the formation of my character and my experiences representing the NT at Under 17 and 19 Cricket and AFL carnivals helped to shape my life.
Therefore, it was a thrill to see many O’Loughlin students playing off in Grand finals in the past weeks. An example was the Under 14/16 AFL Finals, well done to Nightcliff! And in Div 2, two Nightcliff teams played against each other, each with O’Loughlin students. It was a wonderful spectacle but there can be only one winner. The victors celebrated but also commiserated with their opponents – valuable lessons all round. The Under 16 Nightcliff Tigers had a one point victory! It IS never over until that final siren.
O’Loughlin supports participation in sport and during the dry season (Term Two and Three) there will be many opportunities for students to be involved in sports’ days, both within and outside school time. However, we have a policy that students must be up to date with their academic work and trying their best at school in order to be granted the privilege to represent the College. I encourage all O’Loughlin sportspeople to keep trying their best, make the most of all opportunities, so that they can be supported to participate in school sport.
Harmony Day Assembly
Last Friday we gathered together as a school for a Special Assembly. The theme was Harmony Day and I spoke of how our Motto – Make Us One in Christ – embodies the same spirit. We are so fortunate, as is Australia, to have people from such a wealth of backgrounds that come together to form our vibrant, supportive and strong community.
Ms Kara Handberg was the star of the show! She is a member of the Gary Lang Dance Company and with her partner, Darren, performed a magical dance for the school. It was stunning and received wild applause. It highlighted all that is wonderful about our community. Thank you again Kara, Darren and Gary Lang.
Parent/Teacher Nights - Week 1&2 in Term Two
These will happen early next term and a letter will be sent out soon with organisational details. I look forward to seeing you then.
Camps and Leadership!
I said farewell to a very excited Year 11 and 12 Stage 2 Outdoor Education and PE group at midnight last night as they embarked on the ‘Surfing Trip’. This trip is a part of their Stage 2 studies and is an amazing opportunity.
Our Stage 2 Creative Arts students are also getting very excited about their trip to Sydney, leaving this Friday. We are very fortunate to be able to offer such fantastic trips and experiences.
And finally, today, 12 of our Year 10, 11 and 12 Student Leaders are attending the GRIP leadership training day. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates on these activities.
It has been a highly successful term to date and I am looking forward to a really positive conclusion to the Term. When it arrives, I hope you all have a peaceful holiday.
All the best
Mr Rhett Bowden
APRE NEWS
Lent – Preparing our hearts for Easter
As we continue through the Season of Lent towards Easter, our time of Project Compassion, I’d like to share this message from Pope Francis with you…
“Lent is the favourable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbour,” he said. “May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gift of God’s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need.”
Lent is a time to draw close to God, so that we may better discover all that is in us and around us that God wants us to see. Too often we are ‘blinded’ by the business of life and the ways that we get caught up serving ourselves rather than others.
In his message, Pope Francis reflected on the parable of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16: 19-31). In that story, a poor man named Lazarus lives on the doorstep of a wealthy man who ignores him. When they die, Lazarus rests in paradise, while the rich man suffers.
Although Lazarus is “practically invisible to the rich man,” Pope Francis said, we should see him as a concrete person, whom God views as a priceless treasure.
“Lazarus teaches us that other persons are a gift,” the pontiff said. “A right relationship with people consists in gratefully recognizing their value. Even the poor person at the door of the rich is not a nuisance, but a summons to conversion and to change.”
In this way, the parable invites us to see each person as a blessing, he said, and Lent is a particularly fitting time to open our door to all those in need and the face of Christ in them.
“Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love. The word of God helps us to open our eyes to welcome and love life, especially when it is weak and vulnerable.”
Here at O’Loughlin Catholic College, we have the opportunity to welcome and serve the poor and vulnerable through our efforts towards raising and giving money for Project Compassion. This time reminds us that we are

GENERAL NEWS
Year 9 STEM class Ms Handberg’s Year 9 STEM class recently participated in the NT Gifted Awareness Week Challenge.
The Gifted Awareness Week competition promoted critical and creative thinking. Students were given an open-ended task to creatively describe a current world problem and propose a solution using a super power of their choice. The competition was open to students from transition to year nine, and students had four weeks to complete the task. Over 50 entries from students across the Northern Territory were received. There were two winners for the Middle School category from O'Loughlin Catholic College. The first winner was Trey Lucas for his PowerPoint on global warming. The second winner was Ryleigh Philpott for his story on cyber bullying. Both students attended the award ceremony at Sanderson Middle School on Saturday the 18th of March. Congratulations to these students!
A big thank you to Ms Handberg and her students for the effort they put into their entries.

Rubik Cubes - no problem for O’Loughlin students!
O’Loughlin Catholic College recently bought a class set of Rubik Cubes (speed cubes to be precise!) to encourage and support all students to be able to solve the puzzle made famous by Erno Rubik back in 1974.
As well as developing students understanding of algorithms (a sequence of “moves”) it has other much deeper impact on students learning. Belief in their own ability, retention of information, realisation that they can stay focused on one non-digital task for an hour, brain growth, persistence and determination.
So, be like the O’Loughlin students, dust off your Rubik Cube or buy a new one and set yourself the challenge of solving it, using support like https://www.youcandothecube.com/solve-it/3-x-3-solution
Maybe you’ll beat the world record of 4.73 seconds set by Feliks Zemdegs earlier this year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R07JiT0PlcE
2∞&⇒ Maths Enrichment
Year 7-9 students now have the option to attend a timetabled once a week Maths Enrichment program.
This program is aimed at students who are achieving well in Maths and have the work-ethic and drive to be challenged mathematically. Their current skill base will be broadened and they’ll use these skills in a variety of situations. Such as Informatics, National Enrichment programs, coding drones, solving the Rubik cube and entering National and International competitions.
FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY
On Tuesday 21st March these students will be competing in their first competition – CAT (Informatics) by the Australian Mathematics Trust http://www.amt.edu.au/informatics/cat/ , where all 2∞&⇒ students are encouraged to do their best.
This question is taken from a previous Year 9 and 10 question.
What do you think the answer is?
Pi Day @OCC
When the 13th March is written in the American style it reads as 3.14
As we all know, this is Pi or the Greek symbol π to 2 decimal places.
So what better reasons to learn about π, circles, recite as many digits as one can remember and eat Pie!
All student’s got in to the spirit of remembering as many digits of this special irrational numbers as they could, so well done to all Homeroom winners. However, a special mention needs to go to Matilda Johnson in year 9 who was able to recite 127 digits of π! That is:
