OSSGA, Mining Matters & EdGEO presents O-P-Q-R-S-T Operations-Pit-Quarry-Rehabilitation Site-Teacher Event Did you know that every Ontarian uses 12 tonnes of stone, sand and gravel each year? The Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association and Mining Matters, in partnership with EdGEO, is inviting Ontario educators to learn about operations at pits and quarries in Ontario featuring the Dufferin Aggregates Milton Quarry, CBM Aggregates Aberfoyle Pits in Puslinch Township, the Lafarge Dundas Quarry and an award winning rehabilitated quarry in Bur- lington - Kerncliff Park. The teacher tour will examine the difference between pits and quarries, how aggregates are produced, the importance of aggregates to everyday life, and various approaches to rehabilitating an aggregate site to a beneficial land use when extraction is completed. Network with your peers over lunch in Aberfoyle as you learn about south- ern Ontario’s rich geological resources and how they are managed sustainably. MILTON QUARRY MILTON QUARRY MILTON QUARRY ——— DUFFERIN AGGREGATES:DUFFERIN AGGREGATES:DUFFERIN AGGREGATES: The Milton Quarry began operations in 1962 and is located on the Niaga-ra Escarpment — a unique and sen-

sitive geological landform. Supplying construction ag-gregate to the western GTA, extraction and pro-cessing of aggregate is anticipated to continue for an-other 25 years. To date more than 120 ha have been progressively rehabilitated. Teachers will learn about the geology, quarry operations and rehabilitation of this site.

ABERFOYLE PIT ABERFOYLE PIT ABERFOYLE PIT ——— CBM CBM CBM AGGREGATES:AGGREGATES:AGGREGATES: Sand and gravel in the Aberfoyle area was deposited by glacial riv-ers and streams, and is suitable

for making concrete and asphalt. Teachers will have an opportunity to examine the glacial geology of this site and learn about the life cycle of this important natural resource from extraction below the water ta-ble to end use, and how the land is rehabilitated.

DUNDAS QUARRYDUNDAS QUARRYDUNDAS QUARRY——— LAFARLAFARLAFARGE GE GE CANADA:CANADA:CANADA:

Located in the town of Flambor-ough, the Dundas Quarry has been mining aggregates for al-

most a century. The quarry produces products used in concrete, asphalt, glass sand, fertilizer filler and the agricultural industry. Teachers will learn about the history and fascinating geology, how the site oper-ates, and Lafarge’s Environmental Management Sys-tem.

KERNCLIFF PARKKERNCLIFF PARKKERNCLIFF PARK::: This site began as a quarry in 1948 and supplied material for Pearson Airport. Following closure in 1957, the Province acquired the

land and transferred it to Conservation Halton in 1995. The City and Conservation Halton created and implemented a master plan with the support of nu-merous public and private donors including OSSGA, MAAP, TOARC and Nelson Aggregate Co. resulting in Burlington’s ecological gateway to the Niagara Escarp-ment. The site was awarded a Bronze Plaque in 2005, OSSGA’s most prestigious award. Teachers will see first hand how a former operating quarry can be reha-bilitated to an ecologically diverse landscape.
