PAGE THREE (seven panels) Panel 1. Sunrise. We’re opening with a street-level establishing shot in a fictional town named Ashlee, Wyoming. I went fictional mostly because we need a small town, and I had a hard time finding photo reference for one with a town square like I want. So it’s easier to just make one up. We’re going for a total Mayberry vibe here—small town America, the sort of place where people don’t lock their doors when they leave the house. In this shot, we’re looking at a squad of a dozen G.A.T.E. soldiers in their established uniforms, helmeted and weapons drawn. These are special forces soldiers, but we want them to be next generation. They’ve been drawn in the past wearing eyepieces, so that’s a good place to start, but anything you want to add to take them to the next level, please do so. If you don’t do eyepieces, then they’ll need some sort of helmet-mounted cameras to transmit live feeds back to HQ. Anyway, they’re in a patrol formation, moving alertly and with a purpose, Alpha Team Leader out front. Everyone has their rifles at the ready, pointing them in various directions to cover their sides and rear. Looking down the street behind them is a small town Main Street—a historic district with old architecture—with a few shops and a bank and some pickup trucks parked at the curbs. No neon signs or fast food joints or anything like that. This is the kind of place John Dillinger would’ve robbed blind back in his heyday. There aren’t any townsfolk present, but neither is there any evidence of something gone wrong. The town is just . . . empty. At no point on this page do we want to show the direction the soldiers are heading toward. We only want to show where they’ve been. Lastly, somewhere on this page, we want to have three insets to help convey both a passage of time, and that something has gone very wrong. In any order you like, wherever you want to put them, here are the insets: --A car with the driver’s side door open no one inside. A soldier passes by in the background. --A lawyer’s briefcase fallen to the ground and opened up, the papers fluttering in the wind. A soldier’s boot steps into the panel, walking past the briefcase. --A garden hose dropped into a bed of flowers outside a storefront. The water is running, sending a puddle out into the street.

PAGE THREE (cont…) 1 SETTING CAPTION:ASHLEE, WYOMING. 2 SETTING CAPTION:TODAY. 3 ALPHA TEAM LEADER:BRAVO TEAM: REPORT. 4 BRAVO TEAM LEADER CAPTION (transmission):ALL CLEAR. NO MOVEMENT. CONVERGING ON TOWN CENTER FROM THE SOUTH. Panel 2. Move in on Alpha Team Leader, an experienced, hard soldier in his mid-forties. He’s focused, eyes front and looking over the top of his rifle. A step behind and on either side we see younger soldiers pointing their rifles left and right at the empty buildings. The one to Alpha Team Leader’s left is the Corporal who’ll have a few lines in the scene. I’m a big fan of water towers, so if you could squeeze one into the shot with a cheery EVERYONE’S HAPPY IN ASHLEE! on it, I’ll love you forever. Maybe it’s in the distance, poking up over the top of the buildings lining the street. 5 ALPHA TEAM LEADER:NORTH SIDE ALSO CLEAR. 6 ALPHA TEAM LEADER:WE’LL MEET YOU IN THE MIDDLE, BRAVO TEAM. 10 ALPHA TEAM LEADER:DEAR GOD.

Page 15: NYCC 2015 Educational Panels by Comic Book School

PAGE THREE (cont…) Panel 3. Stay on Alpha Team Leader and the Corporal. The Corporal continues to point his weapon off panel left, keeping an eye on that side of the street. He looks nervous, questioning his career choice in his head—we’re kind of going for the way Hicks (Bill Paxton) behaved as he got increasing scared in Aliens. “Game over, man! Game over!” Alpha Team Leader keeps his eyes front. He has stopped dead in his tracks, looking at something off panel behind us. He’s taken aback by what he sees. He holds his left arm out in a “hold” gesture. He still points his gun forward with his right hand. 7 ALPHA TEAM LEADER:ALL TEAMS: HOLD POSITIONS. 8 CORPORAL:I GOT A BAD FEELING, MAJOR. YOU THINK . . . YOU THINK IT’S HAPPENED AGAIN? Panel 4. Same shot, but now the Corporal is looking in the same direction as Alpha Team Leader. The Corporal is distraught—he’s seen a bunch of horrific stuff lately, and he’s starting to break under the weight of it all. Alpha Team Leader has his jaw clenched, internalizing his grief and turning it into anger. A couple of other soldiers have walked up behind them, all of them looking stunned. Everyone’s guns are lowered. 9 CORPORAL:AW, HELL . . . 10 ALPHA TEAM LEADER:DEAR GOD.

PAGE 6. Panel 1. Mid-morning. The sky is bright and blue and cloudless. A gentle wind blows across the ocean. In the foreground, Aang and Kiyi ride a flying dolphin-fish. They glide peacefully along the surface of the water, so only their feet are submerged. Aang and Kiyi are both delighted. In the background is a Fire Nation ship. The ship is a converted warship, the same model as the one Zuko traveled on when he was hunting Aang at the beginning of the show, only disarmed and painted gentler, more civilian colors. Katara and Sokka stand on deck, watching Aang and Kiyi. The siblings are having almost as must fun as Aang and Kiyi are. Appa sits behind them.  AANG:Ha ha! KIYI:Wheee! Panel 2. We pull in closer to Katara and Sokka. Sokka has his elbows on the ship’s railing. He smiles wistfully. Katara puts her hand on Sokka’s shoulder and gestures towards Aang and Sokka. SOKKA:Sure looks like Aang and Kiyi are having fun. KATARA:Why don't you ask to join them, Sokka?

Page 29: NYCC 2015 Educational Panels by Comic Book School

PAGE 6. Cont…

Panel 3. We swing around to see Aang, Kiyi, and the flying dolphin-fish in the background, Sokka and Katara in the foreground. Sokka shrugs. Katara furrows her brow and puts her hands on her hips. SOKKA:No thanks. Too slimy for my taste. KATARA:Flying dolphin-fishes aren't slimy! SOKKA:Yeah, well, I still prefer my rides to be mechanical.  Panel 4. Appa complains. Sokka walks over to comfort him. APPA:RAAARRR! SOKKA:Except you, of course, Appa! Panel 5. Appa licks Sokka’s face, covering him with slime. SFX:LICK.
