MATCH DAY PREVIEWPortland Thorns FC close out the 2015 regular season playing two of their final three matches on the road. Portland visits Yurcak Field for a match against Sky Blue FC on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 4 p.m. (Pacific) in Piscataway, N.J.

Despite a loss on the road to FC Kansas City that snapped the team’s three-game winning streak, Thorns FC have been in good form, winning three of their last four matches, including a game on the road against the Western New York Flash on July 29.

Portland scored two or more goals in three of those matches, while five differ-ent players scored goals and eight different players tallied a point during the team’s winning streak.

LONG ON FIREMidfielder Allie Long has continued her impressive goal-scoring pace, reg-istering a goal in three of Portland’s last four matches. Long tallied a brace in a 2-1 win against the Chicago Red Stars on Aug. 9. The brace was Long’s second of the 2015 season - and the third of her career - bringing her season total to nine goals and four assists. Long ranks tied for second in the NWSL in goals (9) and tied for third in assists (4). She is one of just two players (Kim Little) in the league that ranks in the top five in the league in both goals and assists. Portland is 15-0-3 all-time when Long scores in a match and 6-0-1 in 2015.

PLAYOFF PICTUREWith three games remaining on the regular season schedule, Portland (22pts) sits three points behind FC Kansas City (25pts) for the fourth, and final, playoff spot and just six points off the pace of Washington and Chicago, which are both tied for second with 28 points. The first tiebreaker for the playoffs is head-to-head record and the second is overall goal differential. Thorns FC does not hold the tiebreaker with Kansas City, but would hold the tiebreaker with Chicago and would need to beat Washington and make up goal differential to hold the tiebreaker with the Spirit. The race is tight for the final playoff spot as eight of the nine teams in the league are mathematically in the playoff race and just seven points separate eighth and fourth place in the NWSL standings. In the case of a three-way tie in the standings, the first tiebreaker is points per game against the other two teams followed by overall goal differential. A Thorns FC win on Saturday coupled with a Washington loss on Aug. 27 could result in a significant shake up in the standings, setting up for a pivotal home match for Portland on Aug. 30 against the Spirit.

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH PAUL RILEYPaul Riley begins his second season as Thorns FC head coach in 2015 after tak-ing over as the club’s head coach for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season on Dec. 10, 2013. Riley has compiled a lengthy head coaching career at the youth, collegiate and professional levels.

In his first season, Riley made several key acquistions, helping Thorns FC qualify for the 2014 NWSL Playoffs, one of just two teams to qualify for the postseason in each of the first two seasons of the league. Riley acquired Spain Women’s National Team midfielder and former Women’s Professional Soccer MVP Vero Boquete, 2013 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year and Germany Women’s National Team goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and Australia Women’s National Team defender Steph Catley as Portland compiled a 10-8-6 record in Riley’s first season.

Previously serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer, Riley helped build the club into one of the best teams in the league reaching the WPS Championship match in each of the team’s two seasons. A two-time WPS Coach of the Year selection (2010, 2011), Riley compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons at the helm in Philadelphia, including a mark of 11-4-3 during the 2011 season.

Having coached at every level, Riley began his women’s coaching career with the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2005, leading the club to a national championship in its inaugural 2006 season and a second title in 2009. Riley was named WPSL Coach of the Year in 2009 and, most recently, coached the team during their 2013 WPSL campaign. With the advent of WPSL Elite in 2012, Riley took charge of the New York Fury, helping guide the club to the semifinal round of the playoffs.

A native of Liverpool, England, Riley has served as a youth coach and director of coaching for Long Island-based Albertson Soccer Club since 1994, helping build one of the most well-known youth devel-opment clubs in the Northeast.

Prior to coaching women’s soccer, Riley began his professional coaching career as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders from 1998-2003, earning USL A-League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and guiding the Rough Riders to the USL D3 Pro League championship in 2002.

At the collegiate level, Riley served as head coach of the LIU Post men’s soccer team from 1990-97, registering an 88-49-13 overall record and garnering New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) Coach of the Year recognition five times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997).

As a player, Riley spent a 10-year professional career in the Northeast with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98).

A midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85, Riley holds the program’s all-time career record in assists (43). In his senior season in 1985, Riley recorded 47 points (15g, 17a) and helped lead the Panthers to a No. 24 national ranking. Third on the all-time list in career points (121), Riley was named to the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Riley graduated from Adelphi in 1986 with a degree in journalism and English. He earned a master’s degree in marketing and advertising from LIU Post in 1989.

Squaring off in back-to-back matches on July 3 and July 11, Portland earned a 2-1 win against Sky Blue FC on July 3 at Providence Park, receiving goals from Long and the game-winning goal from midfielder Sinead Farrelly. Sky Blue FC registered a 1-0 win as forward Sam Kerr tallied a second-half goal on July 11 at Yurcak Field.

Sky Blue FC enter Saturday’s match following a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Red Stars on Aug. 12 at Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill. Goalkeeper Brittany Cameron has played more minutes (1,522) than any other goalkeeper in the NWSL, while tallying a league-best 78 saves. Four play-ers have produced three or more goals this season for Sky Blue FC. HEATH 100 CAPS, MORGAN SCORES FOR U.S.Midfielder Tobin Heath earned her 100th cap with the U.S. Women’s National Team in a 7-2 win against Costa Rica on Aug. 19, becoming the 33rd player to reach this milestone. In addition, forward Alex Morgan saw action as a second-half substitute in the win, tallying a goal in the 81st minute. The goal was the 53rd of her career, moving her into a tie for ninth place on USWNT’s all-time scoring list.


THORNS AT THE WORLD CUPNine of Thorns FC’s 10 World Cup players, including Portland’s newest addition midfielder Lianne Sanderson, appeared in matches at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Tobin Heath and Alex Morgan helped the U.S. lift the trophy with a 5-2 win over Japan in the final, while Sanderson and forward Jodie Taylor won a bronze medal with the England Women’s National team. Heath became the fourth Thorns FC player to score at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup as she tallied the 5th goal in the win for the U.S. Portland is the only team in the NWSL with two players on its roster who have scored a goal in a World Cup final. In ad-dition, Thorns FC had more players score in the World Cup then any NWSL team (4) as Taylor scored for England, Christine Sinclair tallied two goals for Canada and Morgan scored in the quarterfinal round against Colombia. Nadine Angerer logged 690 minutes, the most of any NWSL player at the World Cup. The German international played in all seven of her country’s games at the tournament, in-cluding two matches that went to extra time. Thorns FC players combined played 2,928 minutes in the tournament, the most of any NWSL team. In addition, a total of 12 current Thorns FC players have played in a World Cup as both Rachel Van Hollebeke and Ayo appeared in the 2011 version of the tournament.

MILESTONESMidfielder Allie Long has 21 goals for her career, which is tied for second-most in NWSL history and is just one behind all-time leading goal scorer, Kim Little (22) of Seattle Reign FC. In addition, Long is one of five NWSL players with 20 or more career goals (Carli Lloyd, Jessica McDonald, Lauren Holiday, Little).

Defender Kat Williamson made her 60th career NWSL appearance on Aug. 12, while defender Emily Menges became the sixth player to reach 40 career appear-ances for Portland. Additionally, Midfielder Mana Shim became the seventh player in club history to surpass 3,000 career minutes.

On Saturday, Long could reach 60 career starts for Thorns FC, while forward Christine Sinclair could potentially start her 50th career match for Thorns FC.

Sinclair is tied for first place all-time with five game-winning goals with Alex Morgan and is just one point away from 40 career points. Morgan is also one as-sist shy of double-digit career assists and would join Long as the only Thorns FC player with double-digit goals and assists if she tallies another assist this season. Shim is also one goal away from reaching double-digit goals for her career.

TERRY WAIVED, KLEINER SIGNEDThorns FC have waived forward Hanna Terry and signed defender Alyssa Kleiner. Kleiner has appeared in seven matches (3 starts) for Portland in 2015 as a reserve player. A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Kleiner made her Thorns FC debut on May 9 as a substitute against Washington and earned her first start against the Houston Dash on May 23, playing 90 minutes. Additionally, Kleiner started and tallied the game-winning assist on July 3 in a win against Sky Blue FC at Providence Park.
