MATCH DAY PREVIEWPortland Thorns FC travel to Lisle, Ill. for their first road match of the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League season against the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, April 25, at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific).

Thorns FC are 2-0-0 to start the season for the first time in the team’s three year history after registering a 1-0 win over the Western New York Flash on April 18 at Providence Park.

Saturday’s match marks the eighth meeting all-time between Portland and Chicago. The two teams have played to four consecutive draws, including back-to-back, 1-1 ties last season at Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex just nine days apart: July 9 and July 17. Thorns FC are 2-1-4 all-time against the Red Stars with a record of 2-0-2 on the road.

AGAINST CHICAGOThorns FC and the Red Stars played three times during the 2014 season, including a pair of contests at Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex. Portland took early leads in the match on both July 9 and July 17 before Chicago tallied late equalizers. On July 9, midfielder Allie Long gave Portland a 1-0 lead through a penalty-kick goal, but Chicago converted a pen-alty kick in the 86th minute to secure the draw. In the last meeting between the two teams, Thorns FC registered the quickest goal in NWSL history just 33 seconds into the match, but Chicago managed to equalize through midfielder Lori Chalupny in the 76th minute. Portland has allowed just two goals on the road against Chicago in the four previous meetings while scoring six.

THORNS FC IN APRIL

The month of April has proved to be a successful one for Thorns FC through the team’s first three seasons in the NWSL. Portland is 6-0-2 all-time during the month of April, dating back to the 2013 season. In eight games, Thorns FC have outscored their opponents 15-5 during the month of April. Defensively, Portland has registered three shutouts and has never surrendered multiple goals in a match in April.

FAST START

Midfielder Allie Long has gotten off to a fast start in 2015, tallying three goals in the first two matches. Long tallied her second career brace in a 4-1 win against the Boston Breakers to open the campaign on April 11, then tallied the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win against Western New York on April 18. It marks the second consecutive season Long has tallied goals in the first two matches of the season. April has been a good month for Long as well as she has scored six goals in eight matches, dating back to 2013.

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH PAUL RILEYPaul Riley begins his second season as Thorns FC head coach in 2015 after tak-ing over as the club’s head coach for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season on Dec. 10, 2013. Riley has compiled a lengthy head coaching career at the youth, collegiate and professional levels.

In his first season, Riley made several key acquistions, helping Thorns FC qualify for the 2014 NWSL Playoffs, one of just two teams to qualify for the postseason in each of the first two seasons of the league. Riley acquired Spain Women’s National Team midfielder and former Women’s Professional Soccer MVP Vero Boquete, 2013 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year and Germany Women’s National Team goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and Australia Women’s National Team defender Steph Catley as Portland compiled a 10-8-6 record in Riley’s first season.

Previously serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer, Riley helped build the club into one of the best teams in the league reaching the WPS Championship match in each of the team’s two seasons. A two-time WPS Coach of the Year selection (2010, 2011), Riley compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons at the helm in Philadelphia, including a mark of 11-4-3 during the 2011 season.

Having coached at every level, Riley began his women’s coaching career with the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2005, leading the club to a national championship in its inaugural 2006 season and a second title in 2009. Riley was named WPSL Coach of the Year in 2009 and, most recently, coached the team during their 2013 WPSL campaign. With the advent of WPSL Elite in 2012, Riley took charge of the New York Fury, helping guide the club to the semifinal round of the playoffs.

A native of Liverpool, England, Riley has served as a youth coach and director of coaching for Long Island-based Albertson Soccer Club since 1994, helping build one of the most well-known youth devel-opment clubs in the Northeast.

Prior to coaching women’s soccer, Riley began his professional coaching career as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders from 1998-2003, earning USL A-League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and guiding the Rough Riders to the USL D3 Pro League championship in 2002.

At the collegiate level, Riley served as head coach of the LIU Post men’s soccer team from 1990-97, registering an 88-49-13 overall record and garnering New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) Coach of the Year recognition five times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997).

As a player, Riley spent a 10-year professional career in the Northeast with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98).

A midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85, Riley holds the program’s all-time career record in assists (43). In his senior season in 1985, Riley recorded 47 points (15g, 17a) and helped lead the Panthers to a No. 24 national ranking. Third on the all-time list in career points (121), Riley was named to the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Riley graduated from Adelphi in 1986 with a degree in journalism and English. He earned a master’s degree in marketing and advertising from LIU Post in 1989.

NEW FACES IN THE ROSE CITYPortland acquired several new players during the offseason, including England Women’s National Team forward Jodie Taylor and Equatorial Guinea National Team forward Ayo Añonma. Taylor has eight international caps for England and arrived in Portland following a 2015 NWSL College draft-day trade with the Washington Spirit. A standout at Oregon State, Taylor tallied 11 goals and two assists for the Spirit in 2014, earning NWSL Second XI honors. Añonma will arrive in Portland in May after she completes her season in Germany’s Frauen Bundesliga with Turbine Potsdam. Ranked 10th all-time in career goals (95) in the Frauen Bundesliga, Añonma was the first non-German player to lead the league in scoring with 22 goals during the 2011-12 season. Additionally, Thorns FC acquired several other new players through offseason trades and signings. A former University of Portland standout and Portland native, defender Kendall Johnson arrived in a trade with Sky Blue FC, while defender Kat Williamson and midfielder McCall Zerboni were acquired in a trade with the Western New York Flash. Williamson played for Thorns FC during her rookie season in 2013, appearing in all 22 matches. An experienced midfielder, Zerboni won a Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) title with the Flash in 2011 and helped guide Western New York to the championship match in 2013.

SCOUTING THE RED STARSThe Red Stars opened their 2015 NWSL season on April 18, earning a 3-2, stoppage-time victory against Seattle Reign FC at Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex. Forward Christen Press registered a brace, including the game-winning goal in the 91st minute, which earned her NWSL Player of the Week honors. Seattle twice took the lead and both times Chicago equalized be-fore Press netted the game winner. Four of the five goals were scored in the first 35 minutes of the match as forward Jen Hoy also tallied a goal for the Red Stars. Along with Press, Chicago features three other U.S. Women’s National Team players set to appear at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, including 2014 NWSL Rookie of the Year, defender Julie Johnston, and experienced midfielders Shan-non Boxx and Lori Chalupny. New Zealand international Abby Erceg helps anchor Chicago’s backline, while a pair of rookies are set to play significant minutes this season, forward Sofia Huerta and midfielder Danielle Colaprico. Both started and played 90 minutes in Chicago’s season-opening victory.

MILESTONE WATCH

Midfielder Allie Long will likely move into sole possession of multiple all-time Thorns FC career leader categories during Saturday’s match. On April 18 against the Western New York Flash, Long moved into a tie for first-place on the all-time career list for appearances (46), minutes played (3,943) and goals (15). Long is tied for first place in career appearancs and minutes played with Nikki Marshall and career goals with forward Christine Sinclair. If Long plays 57 minutes or more on Saturday she will become the first player to surpass 4,000 career min-utes played for Thorns FC. A goal by either Long or Sinclair moves them into sole possession of first place on Thorns FC’s all-time scoring list. Currently, forward Alex Morgan sits atop the list for career points (37), Long ranks second with 35 points and Sinclair ranks third with 33 points. Sinclair can also become the third Thorns FC player to appear in 45 games for the club on Saturday.

AMATEUR CALL UPSDefender Taylor Comeau and forwards Kelsey Haycook and Sarah Jackson have been added to the 20-player roster for Saturday’s match against the Chicago Red Stars. The addition of these three players provides roster depth while several Thorns FC players are away on international duty. Comeau recorded eight goals and six assists during her senior campaign at California-Berkley, playing for the Golden Bears from 2011-14. A two-time NSCAA All-American at La Salle, Haycook ranked third in the NCAA with 20 goals during her senior campaign in 2014. Jackson appeared in 22 games during her senior season at Santa Clara in 2013, tallying three goals and four assists in her final season for the Broncos.


LAST MATCH RECAPPortland extended its home unbeaten streak to seven games with a 1-0 win against the Western New York Flash on April 18 at Providence Park. Midfielder Al-lie Long tallied the game-winning goal in the 22nd mintue of the match. Midfield-er Sinead Farrelly lofted a cross into the box for Long, who settled between to Western New York defenders with her back to goal and beat goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo to the ball with a header inside the right post. The assist was the first of Farrelly’s Thorns FC and NWSL career and her second straight match recording a point. Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer registered her fifth career clean sheet as she made her first start of the 2015 season in goal, recording a pair of saves.
