CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH PAUL RILEYPaul Riley was named the club’s head coach for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season on Dec. 10, 2013. Riley, 50, has compiled a lengthy head coaching career at the youth, collegiate and professional levels.

Previously serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer, Riley helped build the club into one of the best teams in the league reaching the WPS Championship match in each of the team’s two seasons. A two-time WPS Coach of the Year selection (2010, 2011), Riley compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons at the helm in Philadelphia, including a mark of 11-4-3 during the 2011 season.

Having coached at every level, Riley began his women’s coaching career with the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2005, leading the club to a national championship in its inaugural 2006 season and a second title in 2009. Riley was named WPSL Coach of the Year in 2009 and, most recently, coached the team during their 2013 WPSL campaign. With the advent of WPSL Elite in 2012, Riley took charge of the New York Fury, helping guide the club to the semifinal round of the playoffs.

A native of Liverpool, England, Riley has served as a youth coach and director of coaching for Long Island-based Albertson Soccer Club since 1994, helping build one of the most well-known youth devel-opment clubs in the Northeast.

Prior to coaching women’s soccer, Riley began his professional coaching career as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders from 1998-2003, earning USL A-League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and guiding the Rough Riders to the USL D3 Pro League championship in 2002.

At the collegiate level, Riley served as head coach of the LIU Post men’s soccer team from 1990-97, registering an 88-49-13 overall record and garnering New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) Coach of the Year recognition five times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997).

As a player, Riley spent a 10-year professional career in the Northeast with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98).

A midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85, Riley holds the program’s all-time career record in assists (43). In his senior season in 1985, Riley recorded 47 points (15g, 17a) and helped lead the Panthers to a No. 24 national ranking. Third on the all-time list in career points (121), Riley was named to the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Riley graduated from Adelphi in 1986 with a degree in journalism and English. He earned a master’s degree in marketing and advertising from LIU Post in 1989. Riley and his wife, Tracy, reside in Long Island, N.Y.

TERRY SIGNED, TWO PLACED ON DLThorns FC signed forward Hanna Terry for the remainder of the season on July 25, while defenders Courtney Niemiec and Kat Tarr were placed on the disabled list for the remainder of the season. Terry, 23, is a former standout at Northeastern University (2011-13), while she was named to the Sweden U-23 Women’s National Team roster for the 2013 Four Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain, from Feb. 28-March 4, 2013. At two-time first team All-Colonial Athletic Conference selec-tion, Terry helped lead the Huskies to a NCAA tournament berth as well as a CAA title in 2013.

RECORD-BREAKING PERFORMANCESPortland continued its record-breaking ways in a 6-3 victory against the Boston Breakers on July 20. Thorns FC and Boston set a NWSL record for most combined goals in a match (9), breaking the previous record set back on July 13 as Portland and FC Kansas City combined for eight goals at Providence Park. As a team, Portland has set single-season records for goals (37) and assists (27), breaking the previous record of 32 goals and 25 assists set in 2013. Midfielder Vero Boquete’s six assists this season set a new Thorns FC single-season record. The previous record was five assists by forward Alex Morgan during the 2013 season. Other notable records set by Portland this season include the fastest goal in NWSL history scored 33 seconds into a match by forward Jessica McDonald on July 17 at Chicago. Back on July 4 against Chicago at Providence Park, McDonald tallied her ninth goal of the season, setting a single-season record for goals, breaking the previous record of eight goals scored by Morgan and Sinclair during the 2013 season. Thorns FC also recorded the largest margin of victory (6) and most goals scored (7) in a 7-1 win against FC Kansas City on July 13.

SCOUTING BOSTONBoston has been eliminated from NWSL playoff contention and enters Sunday’s match following a 2-1 loss at FC Kansas City on Wednesday. The match was delayed for two hours as a result of severe weather and called final after the two teams were unable to complete the match following a second weather delay at halftime.

The Breakers have conceded multiple goals in their last eight matches and have just one win in their last eight matches. In their last 10 matches, Boston has conceded at least three goals four times and has scored first four times, but has only won once. Boston has been shutout once in their last 10 matches in a 2-0 loss against Seattle Reign FC on June 19.

Midfielder Heather O’Reilly leads the team with eight goals and four assists, hav-ing tallied at least one point in five straight matches. Forward Jazmines Reeves has added seven goals, while midfiedler Lianne Sanderson has tallied five goals. Alyssa Naeher is the only goalkeeper in the NWSL to feature all season and leads the league in saves (85).

OFFENSIVE OUTBURSTPortland has found a spark offensively in the second half of the season, scoring 26 goals in the last 11 matches after scoring just 12 goals through the first 11 matches of the season. Thorns FC currently lead the league in shots (332) and corner kicks (142) and are tied for first in shots on goal (156). Portland has scored six or more goals in a match three times this season: June 21 at Washing-ton (6), July 13 against FC Kansas City (7) and July 20 against Boston (6).

LEAGUE LEADERSForward Jessica McDonald is tied for third in the league in goals scored (11), while midfielder Allie Long is tied for fifth with nine goals. Forward Christine Sinclair ranks second in shots (66) and is tied for second in shots on goal (33). Midfielder Vero Boquete and defender Steph Catley both rank among league leaders in assists with six and five, respectively. Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer is among league leaders with 65 saves.

TWICE AS NICEFive different players have registered a brace for Thorns FC in the club’s his-tory: Christine Sinclair, Alex Morgan, Jessica McDonald (2), Allie Long and Vero Boquete. Thorns FC players have tallied five braces alone this season: McDonald twice (April 26, June 21), Morgan (June 21), Boquete (July 13) and Long (July 13).

THE JESS FACTORForward Jessica McDonald remains in the hunt for the NWSL Golden Boot with 11 goals, tied for second most in the NWSL. McDonald has scored eight of her 11 goals as a starter. Thorns FC are unbeaten (6-0-3) when McDonald scores a goal. At Providence Park, Thorns FC are 4-0-1 when McDonald scores.

TALENT ALL AROUNDThis offseason Portland signed Germany Women’s National Team captain Nadine Angerer, the 2013 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. Add in forward Chris-tine Sinclair, who is the captain of the Canada Women’s National Team and Spain Women’s National Team captain Vero Boquete and Portland’s roster accounts for three national team captains. Twelve players on Portland’s roster have earned at least one cap at the senior international level for their respective national teams, while Angerer is a two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winner, Sinclair (bronze), midfielder Tobin Heath, forward Alex Morgan and defender Rachel Van Hollebeke (gold) are all Olympic medal winners. Forward Jackie Acevedo (Mexico), defender Stephanie Catley (Australia), midfielders Amber Brooks, Angie Kerr and Allie Long as well as defender/midfielder Sarah Huffman (United States) all have earned senior national team caps during their careers.

VERO NAMED NWSL PLAYER OF THE WEEKMidfielder Vero Boquete earned her third NWSL Player of the Week award this week for Week 17. Boquete garnered honors during both Week 10 and Week 14 this season. The Spain Women’s National Team captain scored the game-winning goal on Sunday in the 54th minute against Houston in a 1-0 win. Boquete has started all 13 matches since her arrival in Portland, recording four goals and six assists for Thorns FC.
