• X’s feats in the World cup of 1958 was one of rarest of records which even

stands today and seem even more improbable in view of the fact that X was

not even wearing his own boots: he had to borrow a pair from a team-mate.

• He didn’t receive any official recognition at the end of the tournament: in

those days there was no formal presentation, and he had to make do with an

air rifle from a local newspaper. Forty years later he received it from Gary

Lineker as part of a television programme tracing the history of the award.

• Who am I talking about and what impossible record did he make?

The 2-3-5 was popularized by English football team Preston North

End, which had many Scottish players on its lineup. The arrival of

Scots in English clubs in the 1880s led to the dominance of the

passing strategy over the dribble and long ball type of play. This

formation can be considered the first formation that relied on

teamwork rather than individual effort.

supporters that emerged from the darkness and into the light every day

A particular element in the team’s crest led to a popular American

comic publication filing a rather improbable lawsuit against the

Spanish team. The team had carried the particular element since

1919, while the comic publication had come up with it only in 1939,

20 years later, yet the team had to modify it (in spite of a history

that dates back to the era of King James I of the 13th century),

making them the most formidable “villain” the comic publication

ever encountered.

In 1996, in an international friendly match between Iceland and Estonia in Tallinn, a unique incident occurred in football history where the son came in as a substitute for his father. They were otherwise not allowed to play together in the matches to which they had represented discontent. The president of Iceland FA had ordered the coach about this because he wanted it to happen only on home turf. So, they could finally play together after all in the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Macedonia. Unfortunately, this never happened as the son broke his leg and his father retired by the time he fully recovered.

crap.“ In January 1999 he was transferred to Nottingham Forrest.

The history of 1954 FIFA World Cup, often referred to as the “Miracle of Bern” saw the favourite Hungarian team being defeated by West Germany in the final, 3-2. Hungary had been unbeaten for 31 matches during the entire course of the tournament, but due to unexpected weather conditions, and the German footwear advantage, they lost the Cup. (The adjoining picture is that of the match clock restored in front of the Stade de Suisse.)

The weather was christened as “X weather” after the name of the German captain. Give me X.What was the footwear advantage?

Juventus initially started off as a team often referred to as “the

old lady” or La Vecchia Signora. They wore pink shirts with a

black tie and black shorts as their jersey, but due to continuous

washing, the colours started fading out.

In 1903, the team asked an Englishman in their team John

Savage to get jersey with colours that won’t fade out. He

shipped out the black and white coloured jerseys to Turin and

they’ve worn that hence.

These colours were modelled after a certain team which

happened to be Savage’s favourite; which team? Or, where was

he from?

paving downfalls for Argentina and other popular teams, including

the Boca Juniors, River Plate and the Santos of Pele because of its

Escape to Victory (1981) is a film about football starring Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone among others and several footballers including Pele, Osvaldo Ardiles, John Wark and popular faces from Ipswich town. The plot speaks of a football match between the Allied POWs, and a German team and how the Allied team defeats the German team in spite of bias from the officials and a strong opposition. They finally escape from prison after winning the death match and create history.History however paints a different picture of “the death match” between two teams, in which a series of matches were played in 1942 and the German team was defeated over and over again. Among the players from this Ukranian squad, three of them were killed, and four of them were taken prisoners but they planfully escaped prison.

20.When Arsene Wenger sent his men to scout Y in 1988 they reported after a league match: “The bad news is, Y broke an arm. The good news: he played anyway.”Y flew to Monaco, signed a contract, then sat back looking miserable: he didn’t have a cent with him, he complained. Wenger pulled 500 French francs from his wallet and handed them to the player. A funny raconteur in private, Wenger likes to joke about Y’s “signing bonus”. Y recently recalled what Wegner told him then: “If you work hard, you will be the best player in Europe.”“Yeah, right,” he thought. In 1995 Y won the Ballon D’Or.
