Pre-congress tutorials Sunday, 19 April 2015

Pre-congress tutorial 1 I Basics on architectural coatingsDr. Christian Schaller, Sto, DE

Weatherability is a big issue for outdoor coatings. Cor-rosion resistance, UV resistance and other performance requests will be discussed in this tutorial. Different sub-strates, like metals, wood and concrete make the world of

architectural coatings a diverse one. The basics of each surface will be explained, as well as the different testing methods. Future developments in architectural coatings are also included.

Pre-congress tutorial 2 I PolyurethanesDr. Ulrich Freudenberg, Bayer MaterialScience, DE

This tutorial investigates the coatings-relevant standard polyisocyanates and their characteristic properties, the characteristic features of polyol components in use for coatings applications and how these components influ-ence the coatings performance. Which combinations are

suitable for which applications? Why, and what are the specific characteristics in the binder chemistry of 1K and 2K solventborne PUR coatings, 1K and 2K waterborne PUR coating, UV curing PUR coatings, PUR powder coa-tings and dual cure systems?

Pre-congress tutorial 3 I Formulating adhesives and sealantsDr. Matthias Popp, Fraunhofer IFAM, DE

Bonding – it is part and parcel of everyday life. There is hard-ly another fi eld as chemically and technically diverse as that of adhesives and sealants. This tutorial will familiarise you with the most important types, focusing on the compositi-on and ingredients of the different kinds of adhesive with their chemical structures and functional groups, so that you

will be able to clearly deduce the resulting properties. Using practical formulation tips, you will analyse guide recipes and patent examples and learn to calculate key recipe parame-ters step by step. At the end of the tutorial, you will be able to formulate confi dently and competently!

Pre-congress tutorial 4 I Testing of anticorrosion coatingsDr. Patrick Keil, BASF SE, DE

Every year we spend millions on anticorrosive coatings to protect metallic structures. To avoid these damages, effective anticorrosive coatings protect these structures. The perfor-mance of anticorrosive coatings can be predicted by a variety

of different testing methods. This tutorial delivers information on the most important corrosion testing methods and their usefulness. Additionally you will receive a short introduction into the basics of corrosion.

Pre-congress tutorial 5 I Understanding biocides and the latest regulationsDr. Annette Bitsch, Fraunhofer ITEM, DE

Inadequate preservation of paints and surface coatings leads to visual contamination. In-can bacterial contamina-tion can lead to undesired liquefaction, odors, gassing and discoloration. The use of biocides is indispensable to avoid

this process. This tutorial covers all you need to know about the use of biocides. Additionally, you will learn about the current changes that have to been made to the Biocides Di-rective in Europe.

Pre-congress tutorials Sunday, 19 April 2015

Pre-congress tutorial 8 I Functional coatingsDr. Volkmar Stenzel, Fraunhofer IFAM, DE

Anti-scratch, easy to clean and many other possible add-ons for coatings will be presented in this tutorial. The technological details of the different specialties of the best known chemistries

will be explained, like the fundamentals of nanomaterials. An outlook of special performance enhancements of functionalities for the coatings industry is included.

Pre-congress tutorial 6 I Dispersing pigments and fi llers – from theory to practice Frank Kleinsteinberg, Evonik Industries, DE

There is no disputing that paint making hinges on the dis-persing process, which is the most important and most complex aspect of the process. An optimal dispersion is es-sential for a high quality paint offering optimum gloss and

high tinting strength. The success of dispersing depends on many factors. This tutorial offers an overview of all inter-related factors and shows how they can be manipulated to yield perfect results.

Pre-congress tutorial 7 I Design of experimentsDr. Theo Wember, freelance expert in technical statistics, DE

Many factors have to be taken into account when a new coa-ting system is developed. The development of a new coating system requires many factors affecting the manufacturing process and the properties if the coating is considered.

When you as paint manufacturer must coordinate the various factor with one another, it is not an easy task. Design of expe-riments is a tool that will help you do your work more effi cient-ly. This tutorial aims to provide an overview of this method.

Pre-congress tutorial 9 I Radiation curingProf. Georg Meichsner, University of Applied Sciences Esslingen, DE

UV curing systems are used in a variety of industrial appli-cations and offer extremely short curing times and immedi-ate further processing. This tutorial will provide you with a concise overview on the fundamentals of radiation curing

coatings, their benefi ts and limitations. The basic chemistry involved, typical formulation characteristics, as well as com-mon and new applications of UV curing and e-beam coatings will be explained.

Pre-congress tutorial 10 I Fundamentals of epoxy coatingsMartin Gerlitz, Huntsman Advanced Materials, CH

The tutorial will provide an introduction to the chemistry of epoxy systems providing an overview on all established combinations in the industries (1K, 2K, room temperature cure, low tempe-rature cure, heat cure). Options to adjust product performance (highly fl exible coatings, high chemical resistance, excellent me-chanical properties, etc.) will be discussed by explanation of the

interaction of the epoxy resin part and the suitable curing agent. The tutorial will also highlight changes in the technology with re-spect to VOC legislation with emphasis on high solids systems, solvent-free systems and waterborne solutions especially in the fi eld of high corrosion protection.

All congress delegates, speakers and chairs are invited to a Welcome get-together on Sunday, 19 April 2015 in the city cen-tre of Nuremberg. Enjoy an evening in a traditional Franconian restaurant with typical food & drinks. A shuttle bus will be offe-red at the exhibition ground for all tutorial delegates providing easy transfer directly to the Welcome get-together.

house gases, recycling, and the use of renewa-ble resources. Growing concerns about climate change and the crisis of resources are the dri-ving forces behind the development of “green” and “bio” products. However, green and bio are not synonymous.

“Bio” is not the holy grail of sustainable deve-lopment. Most biopolymers are not biodegra-dable in landfi ll. Biodegradation depends on

emissions. Therefore, the aim of sustainable development is to meet the needs of the pre-sent without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

A key element of sustainable development is green chemistry. Today, this stands for mini-mising the use and generation of hazardous substances, high energy-, eco- and resource-effi ciency, low emissions of VOCs and green-
