IntroductionBy the Chancellor, Dr Maurice Manning

Since its foundation in 1908, the National University of Ireland has sought to identify, rewardand promote academic distinction across the diverse NUI community through its awards.

The University has been fortunate to receive a number of generous trusts and bequests that havesupplemented its own resources to finance valuable and prestigious Fellowships, Studentshipsand Bursaries as well as numerous scholarships and prizes in a wide range of subject areas.Over time,the University, with the support of Senate and the constituent universities, has soughtas far as possible to maintain the range of its awards, recognising their importance for students,for scholarship and for the vitality of the University as a whole. NUI sees the encouragement ofscholarship and recognition of academic distinction as one of its main goals.

The National University of Ireland, as a federal university, has lived through many changes inhigher education and has faced many challenges. Now at the centre of a loose federation ofindependent universities and colleges, NUI as an organisation seeks to evolve and respondcontinually to changing educational, social and economic circumstances. In its awards, it seeksto reflect the diversity of disciplines studied across the member institutions, from thehumanities and social sciences, to the sciences and technology, medicine and creative arts.

During this centenary year, when Ireland is commemorating the 1916 Rising, the NationalUniversity of Ireland will offer for competition a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Irish/Celtic Studies,An Comhaltacht Iar-Dhochtúra i Léann na Gaeilge/an Léann Ceilteach, which has not been offeredfor a number of years. In addition, one of the Travelling Studentships will be offered inMathematics, in honour of the former NUI Chancellor, Éamon de Valera. A range of medals - theDe Valera Medals – have also been specially commissioned and will be awarded to the recipientsof the major NUI awards in 2016.

This publication gives details of the full range of NUI awards to be offered in 2016, includingFellowships for post-doctoral scholars in the Humanities and Social Sciences; Studentships, aFellowship and scholarships for NUI graduates; scholarships and prizes for currentundergraduate students as well as supports for academic publishing.

The Senate is satisfied that through these awards it is enabled to further the primary object ofthe University as a learning institution dedicated to:

• the enrichment of scholarship and research;

• the advancement and communication of knowledge;

• the promotion of cultural development, and particularly, the encouragement of the Irishlanguage and Irish culture;

• the pursuit of equality of educational opportunity.

The Senate remains committed through its awards to recognising the excellence of the studentsand scholars on the campuses of NUI, creating opportunities for collaboration and partnerships,both national and international, and the formation of closer bonds between the members of thefederation. In this way we believe the name and reputation of the National University of Irelandand its member institutions will be strengthened and enhanced.

DR MAURICE MANNINGChancellor of the University
