The Nuclear Digital ProcessPower (NDPP) from AMETEK Solidstate Controls is a true on-line, double conversion Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system that provides continuous, clean, regulated power for nuclear 1E applications. The 1E qualified NDPP has been developed and tested within a NRC inspected 10 CFR 50 Appendix B Digital System Quality Assurance program, which Solidstate Controls has built from the ground up. It incorporates Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology and an isolation transformer to reduce the footprint and provide tighter output regulation. Utilizing time-tested engineering techniques, the NDPP boasts the same reliability as the commercial DPP, with added safety measures for software integrity and cyber security. The NDPP software features diagnostics, self-checking, system monitoring, data capturing and event logging capability without the need for external communication with other plan safety systems.

To ensure maximum security against cyber-attacks, we developed and tested software and firmware within a secure environment. The secure testing environment is located in a restricted-access area without any network or internet connection capability. During operation, Solidstate Controls’ NDPP 1E UPS system offers advanced monitoring, data capturing and event logging capability without the need for external communication with other plant safety systems. The static transfer switch used to transfer the load from Inverter output to Bypass output has been designed as a fail-safe component, eliminating the safety risk of a single-point of failure.

To reduce footprint, the NDPP utilizes an IGBT bridge and feedback-controlled Pulse Width Modulation to regulate the output feedback loop. This engineering decision eliminates the need for a large ferroresonant transformer, which are tuned to a specific output voltage and will stay within 2%. The smaller, PWM design allows for 1% regulation and output voltage adjustability of ±5%.Enhanced safety features include the isolated user-interface, seismic bracing, employment of electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression and isolation transformers designed for 40-year life. The ISL Series Ferroresonant regulating transformers are housed in a single system enclosure. These units are designed to accept a widely varying AC input voltage, while simultaneously producing a well regulated, filtered AC output. ISL units feature the unique characteristic of being short circuit protected so that overloads and short circuits on the secondary side are not reflected back to the primary.

We manufacture nuclear static inverters to meet a 40-year qualified design life and will place in seismic grade cabinets and packaging to meet most seismic levels. These ferroresonant inverts are meant to convert DC power from a rectifier/charger or battery to an extremely accurate, regulated AC output for powering safety and non-safety loads. Our inverters have an integral and stand-alone Zero-Break Static Switch. We can equip them with rectifier and bypass options as part of our designing and engineering to your specific facility’s needs.

We can help you find the optimum solution for your battery charging needs. Our battery chargers are thyristor-based systems that are designed for high efficiency conversion, (> 90%) of commercial AC power to DC power, for charging station type batteries. These chargers are also compatible with our inverter systems to be used as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) as a float system or as a stand-alone charger for DC only applications. All models are equally compatible with all lead acid type batteries including, lead calcium and antimony, nickel cadmium or valve regulated for DC systems. A dry type isolation transformer is used to isolate the DC output from the AC input and to provide the proper voltage for the rectification process. Standard output ripple filter, 2% with the battery connected, is provided. Optional low ripple and battery eliminator low ripple options are available.
