Director’s Message

NTULINK

Dear alumni,Our NTULink has served our purpose of

communicating with you for many years. We are now proud to present to you our alumni magazine in a redesigned fresh, contemporary look. The NTULink will continue to be the linking bridge to your alma mater. I hope that you have enjoyed reading our NTULink, and will continue to be our dedicated readers.

Going the distance On 1 and 2 October, we successfully held the Run Round Singapore event which saw our eight brave runners trying their very best to complete the full 168km. Three of our alumni runners successfully completed the full run. The Run Round Singapore sets 4 new national records – a befitting gift to the university as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. During the run, it was heartening to see 3600 participants from the Nanyang family comprising alumni, faculty, staff and students as well as the community coming together as a team to set the record. Members of Parliament and grassroots leaders also lent their support to make this a memorable event. The Run Round Singapore has also raised $168,000 for the NTU 21st Century Fund which will go towards benefiting future students.

A night of reunion On 17 December, we will be welcoming you back to campus for our annual alumni homecoming – NTU Alumni Night 2005. It will be an evening of reuniting as the Nanyang Alumni family, and rekindling the fond memories of being a student in the university. As we celebrate NTU’s golden jubilee, we also take this special occasion to recognise our outstanding and deserving alumni with the presentation of the Nanyang Alumni Awards. Our outstanding alumni award recipients will

SOON MIN YAMDirector

receive their Awards from Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

During the night you will be treated to a musical concert specially choreographed by our students from the NTU Cultural Activities Club featuring performances by our students and alumni. You will also be invited to view the exhibition – “NTU Celebrates 50 Years and Beyond” which includes the Prominent Alumni Gallery where we will be featuring our prominent alumni who have excelled in their respective fields of specialisation.

You will enjoy dinner with fellow alumni and guests, following which for the first time ever in our homecoming event, we will have a candlelight rendezvous. You will be able to spend the night at various locations within the campus – places which you frequently visited during your student days – and together with your alumni friends, you can chat the night away. It will indeed be a special evening and I look forward to seeing you on 17 December.

Make a difference as a Class Agent We are all well aware on how important it is for the university to be able to communicate with its alumni. In this aspect, I would like to call upon our alumni to volunteer as Class Agents to assist us in maintaining contact with our alumni and collate updated information so that we can keep them informed of the latest developments. I hope that you will come forward and serve your alma mater as our Class Agents.

I would like to wish all our alumni a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Run Round SingaporeOur 50th anniversary celebratory event, Run Round Singapore 2005, sets four national records

E ight runners, comprising staff, faculty, students and alumni, attempted the

168km route over the weekend of 1 and 2 October. Three alumni successfully completed the full distance in less than 30 hours. The route is the longest ever running distance held in Singapore.

The event which was flagged off by NTU President Dr Su Guaning on 1 October, 9am, saw Class of 197 alumnus Lim Nghee Huat, who was also the oldest 168km runner, returning in just under 2 hours (2 hours, minutes and 2 seconds). Class of 1997 alumnus Yong Yuen Cheng was second, clocking a time of 26 hours 11 minutes and 3 seconds. Class of 1999 alumnus Adrian Mok returned after 27 hours minutes and 3 seconds, despite a knee injury.

Nghee Huat’s accomplishment sets two national records; being the overall fastest runner and the fastest under-60s runner to complete the route. Yuen Cheng sets another national record of being the fastest under-0s runner to complete the full 168km route. Run Round Singapore also sets a national record of having some 3,600 runners participate in the relay segment which comprises 0 stations island-wide within 30 hours.

Our other core runners also exceeded the goals each of them had set for themselves. Here are their accomplishments; n Mr Teng Teck Hou (Staff, 27 years old) completes 126km

n Miss Sumiko Tan (Student, 20 years old) completes 90km n Dr Goh Chor Boon (Academic Staff, 2 years old) completes 66km n Mr Inderjit Singh (Class of 198, years old) completes km n Mr Liow Yi Hao (Student, 22 years old) completes 20km

Their unwavering dedication and endurance is testament to the Nantah spirit which will undoubtedly bind past, present and future generations of students.

Dr Su said in his welcome speech, “I admire their courage, physical fitness, their endurance, their thorough preparation, but most of all, their mental strength and determination. Such strength is exactly what our students need as they graduate to face the highly challenging and highly uncertain, and yet highly rewarding competitive venue of the globalised economies. I know our students will draw strength from our runners and their bravery in attempting the impossible.”

“At the same time, this run is highly symbolic of our mission and vision of involving and serving all Singaporean society. The mass participation for the relay, and the coverage of all of Singapore, symbolises our values of

serving the people of Singapore as we pass the baton from one generation to the next.”

The relay run which covered a total of 0 stations islandwide saw the involvement of the community which came together as one to support the university. A total of 11 Members of Parliament and some 20 grassroots leaders had lent their support in flagging off the run at the various stations and also receiving the baton. Some of them even led their residents in the 3.km run between 2 stations.

The runners from the last relay station arrived at NTU campus on 2 October at 2.0 pm and offering their congratulations at the finishing line were Transport Minister Yeo Cheow Tong, Mayor for Southwest District Dr Amy Khor, MPs for Hong Kah GRC Mr Ang Mong Seng and Dr John Chen, Dr Su Guaning and other NTU senior management staff. A Grand Finale Carnival was held on the grounds of NTU on 2 October in conjunction with the run which saw about 1000 participants from NTU and the community enjoying the fun activities.

In conjunction with Run Round Singapore, $168,000 was raised for the university’s endowment fund to benefit future generations of the university.

During the run I kept telling myself that everyone had put so much into the planning and preparation for the event. We runners had received so many important sponsored products due to all their efforts. Also we had received such superb support throughout the run that I just had to finish it. I am very proud to be a part of this well-organised, successful and meaningful record-setting event.” –Yong Yuen Cheng

50 years of excellenceThe University community came together

to celebrate the 50th anniversary with the highlight of the year-long series of events being the mass festivities on 29 August 2005, when 5000 alumni, faculty, staff and students commemorated the colourful mosaic and tapestry that is the NTU of today.

The guest-of-honour for the event was Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong who delivered a keynote speech at the former Nanyang University Administration Building.

PM Lee said,“The founding and transformation of this university over the last 50 years reflects the spirit of Nantah – the commitment to a vision, the drive to mobilise the community, and the will to succeed in the face of adversity. On this 50th anniversary, NTU’s staff and students should appreciate what they have inherited here on this historic campus at Yunnan Garden.”

He also highlighted NTU’s prestigious standing on a global scale and the direction NTU has to head in to remain competitive. “In a recent survey of the world’s universities, it was ranked 50th globally and 7th in Asia. Like Singapore, NTU can be proud of its achievements, but it cannot afford to rest on its laurels. As we remake Singapore to keep pace with a changing world, NTU will also have to fundamentally re-examine its vision and strategies to stay relevant to the needs of the knowledge economy, and to be regarded as a premier university in Asia and globally.”

The torch was passed along a 400-metre walk to the new NTU Quadrangle (‘the Quad’), a new student activities hub in the heart of the campus. Together with the torchbearers, Prime Minister Lee and alumni, faculty, staff and students made this journey, symbolising the passage into the future.

NTU celebrates with festivities and a symbolism of the Nantah spirit

At the Quad, Dr Lee Seng Gee and Mrs Della Lee from the Lee Foundation presented a generous donation of $10 million towards the NTU Endowment Fund, to benefit the Institute of Advanced Studies. In recognition of the Lee Foundation’s generous gift and to honour its founder, Nobel Laureates hosted by this institute will be named Lee Kong Chian Distinguished Professors. Dr Lee Seng Gee is the son of the late philanthropist, Dr Lee Kong Chian, who founded the Lee Foundation and was one of the prominent founders of Nanyang University.

Following that, Prime Minister Lee dedicated the Quad and officially launched the School of Biological Sciences, a school at the forefront of Singapore’s life sciences initiative.

The evening featured a captivating performance by the 40-member choir group from the Association of Nanyang University Graduates at the former

Building a great university is a long-term endeavour that requires discipline, hard work and single-mindedness of purpose. But with the commitment and

enthusiasm of your stakeholders, and with the same Nantah spirit and drive that has brought the university thus far, I am confident that NTU can continue to upgrade itself, and produce new generations of graduates who will open new paths forward for themselves and for Singapore.

Local celebrities Diana Ser (Class of 2003) and Joanne Peh (current undergraduate) were the emcees and local artiste Rui-En (Class of 2003) lent her voice to the celebrations. Famous pop-star Stefanie Sun (Class of 2003) also made a special appearance via a pre-recorded segment where she had birthday wishes for NTU.

Nostalgic journeys

Dr Ong Beng Soon (Class of 1970), senior fellow, Research & Technology, Xerox Corporation. He says, “This is a nostalgic moment for me as a Nantah graduate to witness the historic celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Nantah by its successor, NTU. From a 3-college people’s university, Nantah’s phenomenal accomplishment as a tertiary education institution in turning out graduates who have admirably served the societies in the Southeast Asian countries has been unequalled. The Nantah spirit – simply the pursuit and delivery of excellence even under the most adverse conditions – has shone throughout the Nantah history. Times have changed, so has Nantah in its evolution. It is heart-warming to see that its successor, NTU, with a broadened objective and purpose, has transformed itself into an educational and research institution of world-class standards. This is the Nantah spirit in action.”

Lee Bee Wah (Class of 1985), president of the Nanyang Civil & Environmental Engineering Alumni, and principal partner with LBW Consultants, and one of the torch bearers, shares her sentiments, ”The memories of my three years in the beautiful campus of NTU are still vivid even though I graduated 20 years ago. Congratulations on the 50th anniversary. My success in life and career today is attributed to the training, moulding and exposure that NTU gave me.”

Taiyabi Ahmad Shadab (Class of 2005), a graduate from the School of Computer Engineering, and former student union president says, “I am very happy and honoured to be involved in the anniversary celebrations. NTU holds a special place in my heart as my experiences at NTU have been greatly enriching and have pushed me intellectually and deepened my understanding of myself. Academics aside, I also found NTU an ideal environment in which to develop oneself in co-curricular activities. These commitments are wide-ranging and one can contribute in various capacities. These activities have helped me develop my management capabilities and also given me wonderful memories for many years to come.”

NTU receives a generous donation from the Lee Foundation. Commemorating the occasion are (from right) Dr Lee Seng Gee, Chairman of the Lee Foundation; his wife, Dr Della Lee; Prime Minister and Mrs Lee Hsien Loong; NTU Council Chairman Mr Koh Boon Hwee and NTU President Dr Su Guaning.

NTU President receives prestigious French award

SPOTLIGHT

Dr Su Guaning has been conferred the title of Chevalier in the National Order of the Legion of Honour by the French government. He received

the coveted decoration from the French Ambassador to Singapore, His Excellency Jean-Paul Reau, at a ceremony held at the French embassy on 21 November 2005.

Dr Su joins the ranks of luminaries including Mr David Marshall, Professor Tommy Koh, and Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw, in receiving the Legion of Honour. This award is given in recognition of Dr Su’s contributions towards the promotion of ties with France in the scientific, academic, and military fields. Instituted by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the National Order of the Legion of Honour is the highest distinction awarded by France for services to the nation.

Says Dr Su, on receiving this award, “I feel very privileged and honoured to be receiving this award. France is world-renowned for her leading science and technology capabilities, excellent education standards and research prowess, and I am gratified to be able to extend NTU’s global links with our French partners to enable our students and faculty to enjoy the benefits of such interactions.”

Prof Er, Singapore’s first IEE Honorary Fellow The London-based Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) - Europe’s

largest professional engineering society – has conferred the title of Honorary Fellow on Prof Er Meng Hwa. Feted for his outstanding contributions to engineering research and education, Prof Er, 49, scores a first for Singapore in receiving the prestigious award.

Forty graduands received their Graduate Diploma in Technopreneurship and

Innovation Programme (TIP) from NTU President Dr Su Guaning, on 11 November 2005 in front of the former Nanyang University Administration Building – NTU’s first outdoor convocation ceremony. Guest-of-Honour Mr Robert Chandran, founder and CEO of US$3.5 billion company, Chemoil Corporation, addressed the graduands at the ceremony.

The TIP Class of 2005 comprises individuals of diverse backgrounds. The 40 graduates range from 21 years to 48 years of age, with an equal representation of fresh graduates and working professionals. Seven had also obtained higher degree qualifications such as MBAs, prior to joining TIP. Besides entrepreneurs, the class also attracted engineers, senior management staff, officer from spring Singapore, even an education administrator.

The diversity of the class shows TIP’s relevance in other professions as the course

is tailored for those who wish to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset to reach greater success in today’s ever-changing economy.

Eight graduates from the Class of 2005 have gone one step further in their pursuit of a meaningful entrepreneurship education and have enrolled in the pioneer Master of Science degree programme in Technopreneurship and Innovation.

Assoc Prof Tan Teng Kee, Director of the Nanyang Technopreneurship Centre (NTC), said: “TIP is more than equipping its students with holistic entrepreneurship skills and business knowledge. Its unique teaching pedagogy offers students the transformational experiences such as being entrepreneurial in thinking and action, confident to start up businesses or to help businesses grow, commitment to success and keenness to give back to society. We are now looking into how the TIP experience can be applied to the undergraduate education as a whole in NTU. TIP is also now upgraded to a Master of Science

degree, providing students an added experience by going to China. The pioneer batch will commence their classes on 5 December 2005.”

We congratulate our Class 2005 TIP graduates and welcome them to the Nanyang Alumni family.

Since its inception in 2001, TIP has seen some 50 per cent of its graduates start their own businesses. These include serial entrepreneur Mr Roderick Chia, founder and managing director of Spiral Communications Pte Ltd, who won the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor’s Award five times, as well as Ms Jan Ho, founder of Applestiz and recipient of this year’s Spirit of Enterprise Award.

The recent winner of this year’s Shell LiveWire Young Business Start-Up Awards, Mr Vincent Lee, is also a TIP alumnus. He started Inflexion, a biomedical start-up which launched its flagship product that is capable of detecting nasopharyngeal cancer in 90 minutes.

NTU imbues spirit of enterprise in new breed of graduates

The trip to the Desaru Fruit Farm, organised by the Alumni Affairs Office, saw durian

fanatics uniting for an unlimited serving of durians. About 100 alumni and their family members were treated to this feast, held across the causeway on 23 July.

A tour of the fruit farm, gave the

participants a first-hand experience of how various tropical fruits are grown and harvested. There was even a talk on how honey is produced at the farm and its healing properties. Some of the alumni eagerly lugged home jars of fresh honey.

The trip ended with a free-and-easy

shopping spree at the City Square shopping centre in Johor Bahru, followed by a sumptuous dinner. Everyone had a great time meeting up, eating, and networking.

Donny Iskandar, our alumnus from the School of Computer Engineering, enjoyed the trip. He beamed: “I would like to thank the Alumni Affairs Office for organising the Durian Trip, which I enjoyed so much, especially the food and the luxurious service!”

HAPPENINGS

The NCEEA was formed in 1997 with the vision to promote networking opportunities and to further the interests of CEE

graduates. The Association has also extended her wings to help needy undergraduates as well.

This year’s bursary presentation was held on 30 September in the CEE Alumni-Student’s Corner. First year undergraduates from the School of CEE were invited to interact with the established alumni. Amongst the distinguished guests who graced the occasion were Professor Pan Tso-Chien, Dean of School of CEE, the Vice-Deans and Sub-Deans from the School, Mr Chong Peng Jek, Vice-President, Student Affairs Office, Mr Soon Min Yam, Director, Alumni Affairs Office, Mr Lim Boon Kiat, Senior Assistant Director, Student Affairs Office as well as Ms Lee Bee Wah, President of NCEEA and her committee members.

In his speech, Prof Pan expressed his gratitude towards the benefactors for their kind support rendered to needy CEE students. He also touched on how the three disciplines of CEE school, namely Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Maritime Studies are being equally capable on both local and international scenes. He ended his speech with words of encouragement: “There is a bright future for us, stay within the family, become an alumni when you leave the school, be an alumni now when you are in the school”.

Ms Lee Bee Wah, President of the CEE Alumni, gave a rousing speech that was well received by everyone. Ms Lee announced that the alumni has raised sufficient funds for next year’s bursaries through a golf tournament held on 18 August 2005. Ms Lee then proceeded to give out the awards to all the deserving students, dousing them with warm smiles and words of encouragement.

The event ended with a buffet lunch for CEE’s freshmen and guests. The day provided an excellent opportunity for the CEE family to mingle and interact beyond the academic context. It was truly a day in which every undergraduate, graduate, professor and alumni member felt a bond to the family - The CEE family.

NTU School of CEE Alumni Association assists students with bursaries

The 6th annual Nanyang School of Civil & Environmental Engineering Alumni Association (NCEEA)-Continental Steel Fund-Raising Golf

Tournament was held at the Warren Golf and Country Club on 18 August. About 150 golfers came together for a round of golf in the name of charity.

The aim of the tournament, amongst many other projects, was to raise funds to enable NCEEA to provide bursaries to needy students in the School of CEE. Students from the three disciplines of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Maritime Studies are eligible to apply for these bursaries in any year of their studies. Ms Lee Bee Wah said, “There are no strings attached to the bursary but students are encouraged to play a role in alumni affairs of the School and the university upon graduation.”

After a blistering eighteen holes, it was time to wind down for dinner. The Guest-of-Honour at the dinner was Mr Mah Bow Tan, Minister for National Development, who was joined by Dr Su, Ms Lee, Prof Pan Tso Chien (Dean, School of CEE), Mr Soon Min Yam (Director, AAO), Mr Chong Kee Sen (Tournament Chairman) and friends of NCEEA.

The speeches delivered by Ms Lee, Dr Su and Prof Pan were profound and deep, both in thanking the CEE Alumni for the passion to their alma mater and to the golfers, contributors and donors for, literally, “playing” their part in the event. Special thanks go to major sponsors, Borneo Motors and Continental Steel, for their continuous support of this event.

Dr Su spoke of the challenges ahead for the university and of the increasing role of the alumni. He outlined several possibilities of linking graduates residing and working in other countries, especially in China, and the potential that this group could bring to the vibrancy of the university in future.

This article was written by Mr Tay Boon Suat, alumnus from Nanyang University who graduated in 1974.

Say “I Do” at NTU

HAPPENINGS HAPPENINGS

Mr Soon Min Yam, Director of the Alumni Affairs Office has been a Deputy Registrar of Marriages

since 1992, and has been solemnising marriages for more than 80 couples since. He recently came up with the idea to offer his marriage solemnisation services to alumni and staff of NTU, at NTU.

On 9 September 2005, he wedded Mr Lee Kah Wah and Miss Cheryl Tan Jwee Lynn amidst the morning sunshine of Yunnan Garden. Mr Lee is a 2002 graduate of NTU, and Miss Tan, a 2003 graduate of NIE.

Mr Lee and Miss Tan read about Mr Soon’s service in an article in NTULink (the alumni magazine), and contacted the Alumni Affairs Office to arrange the ceremony with him. They chose the date 9 September, as it was Mr Lee’s birthday.

According to Mr Soon, getting married on campus has some surprising perks.

“The couple may also extend their happy occasion by calling on the Mayflower Restaurant in the Staff Club for a lunch or dinner buffet spread,” said Mr Soon.

“They can even book a suite in the Nanyang Executive

memories.’ The couple also favoured Yunnan Garden because they preferred the outdoors.

Mr Lee cheekily said of his new wife: “She is like my big present!” to which the new bride added: “And 9 September in Mandarin sounds like ‘long lasting’ – ‘jiu jiu!’”

As the ceremony drew to a close, there were smiles all round the pavilion among their relatives and close friends.

Amidst the charm of Yunnan Garden, there was a joyful air to the occasion. Every wedding day is special, but being the first alumni couple married in NTU makes theirs especially memorable.

Mr Soon proudly offers his voluntary service to “provide an exclusive and excellent service for the alumni and staff of NTU.”

Obviously bubbly on their big day, the newlyweds were in high spirits as they strolled

around the garden, photographer in tow snapping glamour shots of them.

The couple explained that they chose the central pavilion in Yunnan Garden because it was a meaningful place full of history, and Mr Lee, who used to stay in Hall 4 (overlooks the garden) said that it ‘brought back fond

It was also time for lecturers and former students to exchange notes and to update each other. He adds, “The Campus Tour turned out to be the climax of the day. (Thanks to Kwong Hwee for his detailed planning). Besides the symbolic laying of the Class of 85 plaque at the Quad and taking a bird’s eye view of the campus at the Administration Building, we also had a nostalgic moment at Hall 3 and Hall 1, bringing back memories of our humble beginnings as pioneers of NTI. The event ended with a light-hearted fun-filled telematch at the Sports Centre followed by a sumptuous dinner!”

It was also great chatting with fellow students from the Schools of EEE and CSE, and of course with some of our former lecturers. There was just so much to catch up with one another, and to find out from our dear friends the happenings after all. With updated contacts and warm feelings of seeing old friends again, we left with the hope that our next gathering in the near future would see more participants and greater interaction.”
