Keys to success At MWPS we know that there are certain ways of thinking that help us to learn and live more successfully. We call these the “Keys to Success”. Students learn about these keys and practice thinking and acting in ways that strengthen their ability in each area. The purple key is PERSISTENCE. It is not always easy to keep trying when we feel like we’re failing, especially when we think others might be watching. Here are some ways of thinking and talking that can help us to persist through the challenges, and eventually reach those difficult goals.I can do it – It is more helpful to think hard things are possible, even if we can’t do them YET.Give effort – The harder we try, the more successful we are likely to be.
Work tough – To be successful in the future, sometimes means doing things we don’t feel like doing in the short term.
Wise words:“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying ‘I will try again tomorrow’.”– Mary Anne Radmacher

Every day counts:attendance mattersA new report from the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) reinforces the strong correlation between school attendance and student achievement and highlights the importance of forming good attendance habits early.2 or 3 days per month away from school, adds up to a year of missed learning by the end of Year 6. It is very hard for even the most capable child to make up for this amount of lost lesson time. If you have concerns about your child missing school, come and see us. We are happy to work with parents to encourage reluctant attenders and put supports in place to ease anxiety where it exists.

MUSICupdate
First we caught the train with Miss Thomasin and Miss Laura. Miss Rhonda came along as well to snap some pics. When we got to the Opera House, we rehearsed with all the musicians, led by some awesome conductors and teachers. We had a few breaks in between which was good because we were all very tired and wanted to run around. After the rehearsal, we went to the Botanical Gardens and met Mrs. Caponas there and took some photos and slo-mo videos. We then went to dinner at the Opera Kitchen. Finally, the time came to get ready and seated for the concert. The treble recorders were seated in the middle and the descant recorders were at the side at the top. Then, we performed in the concert. When we heard all the instruments play at the same time, we realised that the practise was worth it! At the end, everyone was so tired and were very glad to go home.
The experience was spectacular. Marrickville West is very lucky that we get the opportunity to do this sort of thing and we are all very grateful to have Mrs. Caponas and Miss Thomasin who work very hard to give us these opportunities. It was really special to perform in such a big group of people who we had never met or rehearsed with before. We felt very connected. It’s amazing what can happen when everyone comes together! Some kids were nervous, but the older kids weren’t as nervous. We felt very prepared for the event which was a good feeling to have. It was nice to know that we were making people feel excited, happy and entertained. We know that the audience were very proud of the performers and that made us feel warm and bubbly. We’d also like to thank Miss Ling who supports the arts and helps us to have these opportunities too.
By Evie and Lucy
On Wednesday 31st of July the descant and treble recorder
groups performed in the Jacaranda Festival of Instrumental Music. We
were lucky enough to perform in front of a few thousand people in
the Sydney Opera House. From Marrickville West, 25 students went
to perform. The total number of performers was around 700.

Stage 1’s excursion to Vaucluse house was an incredible experience for students and many of the teachers who had never been there before.
The staff and tour guides at Vaucluse House were wonderful and helped us learn so many new things about a luxury life in Sydney 160 years ago. We also played several games that children played in the 19th century, most of which are still played today.
Year 1 folding the towels like the servants would have done for the family.
1P and 1K in the coldest room of the house where they kept all the dairy.
19th century play time.
Grinding the herbs for the cook.
Teiarna John and Phoenix trying on the clothes.

Students have been enjoying the new sensory room this term which has different areas related to different
sensory processing activities.
They have enjoyed the rocking chair for vestibular, discovery bottles for visual input and a tactile area for proprioceptive input. Students have enjoyed practicing their athletics skills for the upcoming carnival.
As part of our History Curriculum, last Wednesday, Year 1 visited Vaucluse House. They were able to see how differently people lived in the past. It was a great day for Ryan and Krish.

In 3B students were challenged to think about the story of The Lorax from the perspective of the Lorax and the Once-Ler. We discussed how it could be possible to have a business and look after the environment at the same time. We introduced the concept of sustainability. Students then designed their own posters about protecting the environment. These are some of their posters:
In 3H, we have been learning about the First Fleet and the purpose of its voyage. We learnt about what life was like in cities like London in the early 1700’s. Then, we worked in small groups and researched what life was like for convicts living in the early colony. Finally, we started to create a PowerPoint to present our findings.
Students in Year 4 followed a procedure to make Pizza.

Do the right thing so we can all continue to enjoy visits from our furry, four legged friends.
We understand that dogs are often much loved members of the family and can make it more fun to walk to school.
If you bring your dog to school: 3Keep it on a leash at all times
3Keep all puppies off artificial grass (just in case)
3Any mess made by your dog MUST be cleaned up by you!
Do the right thing!
The student leadership team are really excited about the upcoming term! Within the next 10 weeks we have Comic Book Day, Game Day, Book Week, Daffodil Day, Superhero Day, Camp and Trivia Night and the whole school performance. As you can see there are so many great things to look forward to, and of course we will post lots of photos in the newsletter! We would like to give you a recap on what’s been happening in the playground. Firstly, we haven’t been seeing many people sitting on the buddy bench, which means everyone has someone to play with, which is
great. Secondly, we’ve seen quite a few kids playing tips in the top playground and lots of people playing netball/basketball on the basketball court. Thirdly, we have also been seeing a lot of kindness and people taking care of others. However, there has been a small problem with the soccer and rugby players sharing the field. Please keep trying to do your best to share and be kind at lunch and recess. We look forward to keeping you up to date!
Have a great term 3! Ilias and Esther

NEXT P&C MEETING: Thurs Aug 8th 7–9pmin the Staff Room. All parents are welcome to come along and learn more about the school and give their ideas on how to make it a better place.
Changes to Ethics Classes at MWPSTwo of our Ethics classes have said farewell to their teachers this term. A huge thanks to Sarah Neil and Beaux Leeson for all the time they have put in to teaching Ethics at MWPS over several years. Some students who have previously been in Ethics classes will now have to be put onto a waitlist until we have new volunteer teachers on board. Can you help? Teaching Ethics is a great way to make a contribution to the school. Training and all lesson materials are provided and you’ll help students learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully, and support their arguments with evidence rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.Children discuss topic such as:– imagining how others feel– how do we treat living things?– what is laziness?– how do we disagree in a respectful way?– fairness.
Could you be one of our new Ethics teachers? Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-10:30am each week during term. For more information or to express your interest, please contact our MWPS Ethics Coordinator Amity Lynch on [email protected] or 0413 114 758 or visit www.primaryethics.com.au
