From the left Oscar, Yahm, Juan and Harrison have made
beautiful Social Stories for student students transitioning from
Kindergarten to Year One.
Dear Parents
Welcome back to our 2019 school year. Our students were very happy to return to school on
Wednesday morning. We could all feel the excitement in the air and weren’t sure who was the most
excited – students or parents? I know the staff loved catching up with everyone and exchanging
holiday stories.
From the commencement of school this week Kindergarten has been visiting the school for their
BestStart Interviews. This is a national strategy where every kindergarten student is assessed on the
skills in numeracy and literacy they bring to school. This is benchmark data that is collected and built
upon with NAPLAN. Also in Term 4 2018 our 2019 Kindergarten had participated in three sessions of
Play and Stay. We are confident they will be ready for school when they arrive at 10.00 am on Monday
morning. At 10.00am there will be a Tea and Tissues morning tea in the kitchen for all Kindergarten
parents and new parents to the school. This is an opportunity to meet new parents and have some of
those questions that have been keeping you awake at night answered.
Throughout the last week teachers have been delivering our Student Welfare and Personal
Development programs through Year 1 to Year 6. Teachers have also been discussing how change
feels and preparing students for the transition into new classrooms, making new friends and working
with a new teacher. In 2018 we have done a significant amount of work around resilience. All staff
were very impressed with our students’ maturity and resilience. This morning, many staff commented
on how happy and settled the school felt. This has also been reinforced by the community’s shared
observations.
On Tuesday our students will go into their 2019 classes after recess. In Term 4 2018 staff spent a great
deal of planning time organising 2019 classes. Each teacher asked every student in their class what
friends they would like to be placed with in their new class. This information is considered along with
factors such as academic performance, age, gender, social interactions, past class history and
relationships with staff. Teachers make collective decisions about the best place for each student.
Once classes are formed stage teams revisit these groupings many times to reflect on the appropriate
choices. In our decision making we are always guided by what is best for individual students and what
is best for the group. We have been using these strategies for a number of years now and our feedback
and anecdotal evidence suggests we are making good decisions. We appreciate your trust and support
in making positive decisions for all students.
Thank you to all those parents who have made a huge effort not to park in the Staff car park. We
appreciate your efforts to keep our school as safe as possible. We also appreciate those parents who
are parking and walking in Cambridge Avenue and Village High Road. Your efforts are ensuring our
children can come and go from school safely. We have a number of students with access issues and I
know their parents greatly appreciate being able to get into the staff car park.
A very big thank you to life saver Dean who happens to be Nash’s dad in 1/2H who spent today mowing
the lawns and trying to get the jungle under control. For the past seven years we have had the same
contractor mowing our lawns with a standard booking for the day before school starts. A glitch in their
system saw our booking overlooked and we were left with the jungle. We had been unable to get a
service here quickly and Dean came to the rescue. We are extremely grateful for his help. We hope by
next week the outside of the school will be looking its usual glorious self.
For those of you who have visited the admin block this week you may have noticed all the ground floor
classrooms have had a fresh coat of paint over the holidays. The heritage listed Pixie O’Harris
illustrations that were done in 1964 have been preserved. Next week various parts of the playground
and the canteen will be painted and in the near future the exterior of the kitchen will also be painted.
Our year has started gently and kindly. Our students are calm, feel safe and very happy to be back at
school. We are extremely grateful for our good fortune in a world where many children are suffering
in very different circumstances.

My dearest Noa
A new school year is beginning
Full of mysteries and surprises
A new classroom, lessons and teachers
Who will teach and guide you
Through the months ahead.
And best of all are the breaks
Where you and your friends will get together
Play and chat and plan
Parties, and play dates and even sleep overs.
And Mum and Abba will watch
And so will Grandpa, Bubba and I
And we will let you grow as the beautiful girl
You already are
A little bit taller, a little bit cleverer and
A little bit more independent.
But we will be behind you
Always watching and waiting
For you to turn around
To tell us your stories
To sing us your songs
To show us your dancing
And to pick you up if you fall.
So, my darling Noa
Open your wings on this first day of the school year
And fly like a bird
Like the angel you are.
My heart bursts with love
Nana

ACROBATICS
BAYS
Cheerleading / Acrobatics is an excellent sport to take part in for both boys and
girls, involving gymnastics, tumbling, stunting and dancing. Cheerleaders aim for
the highest standard possible and are expected to show high levels of dedication
and talent, sportsmanship and self confidence.
Whilst you are cheerleading you can have so much fun being part of a team and
exercising. Cheerleading, like any dance form, has set arm movements, set timings
for routines, names for the stunt and jumps and most importantly set rules for
performing all these.
Cheerleading is currently the fastest growing sport in the UK - come and train
with us and see why…
Gymnastic, Cheerleading and Dance is run by Sian Brennan-Todd
Choreographer/ Head Coach
Sian Brennan - Todd is the director of Bays. She was a professional dancer and is
now also a cheerleading coach. Sian has a 2:1 degree in Performance Studies, has
her NCSSE Cheerleading levels 1-4 and is Master’s Level qualified and also her
Levels 1-5 USASF. She has had training both here in the UK and also in the USA
with ‘Cheereruption All Stars’, Washington DC, Top Gun, Miami, Spirit of Texas.
Sian was a professional dancer for 10 years and has choreographed for teams
such as the England 2012 ICU Worlds team(Team Jazz Dance). Sian has Judged
for various Cheer and Dance organisations across the UK including Future Cheer
and the British Cheerleading Association. In Australi Sian has Judged for the
AASCF (Australian, All Star Cheerleading federation).
