Scott and Kristin Brown In a Quiet Moment With Son, Brock.

IT HELPS TO have an elevator.
Which is just what Kristin Brown tells friends and the curious whenever they ask how in the
world she’s going to get that baby stroller and other infant paraphernalia into her home. “We always get the question, ‘How are you going to carry all the baby gear in from the car when living on the second floor?’” Brown says. “To their surprise, our response is ‘Do you have an elevator in your home?’
“It’s not any more difficult living off ground level to get groceries or gear inside. It’s quite easy, and not something that should discourage someone from living in a condo.”
Kristin and her husband, Scott, have been doing just that since 2007 when the couple moved into the Kimball Lofts at 15th and Jones streets.
They had figured that when they began their life together, it would be in a house: The kind with a yard and a driveway (and mowing and shoveling). They were suburbanites, after all. Both grew up in west Omaha, attending Millard North High School together before graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Their first search for a home brought them to the Dundee neighborhood. The Browns found a house they liked but waited too long to bid on it. It was snatched up by the next day. Soon thereafter, Kristin got Scott to join her on the Downtown Condo Living Tour. That took them to Kimball Lofts.
“Neither of us had spent much time Downtown, but we knew we loved city living,” Kristin says. “Within minutes of touring the Kimball Lofts building we could picture ourselves starting our lives there as a married couple.
“The minimalist lifestyle was most appealing. We knew we’d use every bit of space in our condo. And we love to travel, so being able to pick up and go without the responsibilities that came with a traditional home was important to us.”
Still, the Browns figured their downtown living was only meant for two—and not for children. Once a third Brown was added, they’d get a home with a yard. “We assumed that’s where we’d end up sooner rather than later,” Kristin says. Sooner came in 2014 with Kristin due to give birth to her first child, Brock, in August. It wouldn’t be long until the 1,500 square feet they were sharing wouldn’t be enough.
They considered building on a lot in West Omaha, but without knowing how large their family would grow, found it difficult to commit to plans. They wanted something move-in ready. They found it across the hall in the largest condo in Kimball Lofts. Their neighbors had moved out. The Browns moved in. Now they had two bedrooms and gobs of entertaining space amid nearly 2,600 square feet.
“We decided to reevaluate our desires and what was important to us,” Kristin says. >

< The condo is ideal for entertaining. Natural light floods every room through tall windows inset into exposed exterior brick walls. The tops of young trees along 15th Street are visible and promise a dazzling palette come every fall.
Guests first enter a large kitchen featuring stainless steel appliances and a long stone countertop that seats six at bar stools. That flows into the living room and dining room, where the Browns have a table that can host 16 guests when it unfolds. Off the dining room is a small deck where Scott frequently grills. There’s a room for baby Brock and a spacious master bedroom. The ceiling is high and exposed throughout.
Kristin parks underground in a heated garage; Scott has a street-level stall in a gated lot. Their commute is almost nonexistent as both work downtown in sales, Scott at Gallup, Kristin with Pfizer.
“Not having to fight traffic day after day is a huge benefit,” she says.
Yes, there are space constraints. In their previous condo, Scott’s bikes —he rides regularly and competes in triathlons—were stored in the
hallway. There’s room for them now in a closet, but today the baby stroller takes residence in the hallway. And the dryer is stacked atop the washer in their walk-in closet (at least there’s no trip to put away clean clothes).
But if they have to do with less stuff, they certainly have more stuff to do. The Browns are outside more often, perhaps, than their suburban counterparts with yards. From their condo, Scott can hit trails that take him through Iowa on the Wabash Trace or to Fort Calhoun. They walk downtown frequently—to the pedestrian bridge or throughout the Old Market. And quite frequently to dinner.
“Being able to walk out our front door to the best restaurants in Omaha is a huge perk,” Kristin says. “And everyone knows everyone. There’s nothing better than going to the local market or our favorite restaurant or coffee shop and being greeted by our first name.” Encounter

MUSHROOMS AND ALIENS. Taken together, the two don’t have much in common. But their basic forms, with their sinuous, looping lines, are the
hallmark of fabric artist Shea Wilkinson’s intricately crafted quilts.
The 28 year old did not intend to be an artist. Instead, Wilkinson’s professional path seemed more aligned to a living overseas, and her fairly peripatetic life seemed to foreshadow that kind of career: She earned a BA in German and international studies from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, lived in the Czech Republic and after marrying her husband Jake in 2009, earned a certificate to teach English in Berlin.
In 2010, the couple travelled to Mexico where they taught English until 2011. Wilkinson used her free time to do what would become her artistic medium: stitching. “After work, I had so much free time—we only taught three hours a day— and people would go for drinks,” Wilkinson says, “but I stayed home and quilted five or six hours.” Hand quilting, though, pushed her too far physically, so she began using a sewing machine. “I had always had a sewing machine in my life, and after about six months I got one. I didn’t like machine quilting, but I had to get over that bias, because I needed something to do.” >

< Get over it, she did. Wilkinson began creating distinctive design elements with brilliantly colored threads, and her subject matter developed relatively quickly. “I thought, ‘What can I draw?’ Mushrooms, aliens, and plants were easy for me.”
Once she and her husband returned to Omaha, Wilkinson continued quilting, but no longer as a hobby. “I was eager to continue quilting and figure out how to have a career in art,” she remembers.
That career developed quickly through coveted artist residencies. In 2012, she became a Union of Contemporary Arts fellow, and the following year she became a Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts’ community arts resident at Heartland Family Services. This year, she received a residency at the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts in Wyoming.
Wilkinson also became a studio assistant to internationally renowned fiber artist Mary Zicafoose, from whom she learned additional techniques, such as wrapping fiber and weaving. She additionally received career-transforming advice. “Through her I learned to work on a larger scale. I had been doing smaller pieces that weren’t as intensive. She suggested I create diptychs and triptychs or to make series to have a larger presence. Until then, working large hadn’t occurred to me.”
It’s been barely three years since Wilkinson embarked on a career as an artist, and she still seems surprised at her success. “Being an artist was absolutely unexpected,” she muses. “It never, ever crossed my mind. I had no concept of being an artist.” Now, as she continues to improve and evolve with each piece she creates, Wilkinson has the concept, not just of being an artist, but what her art should be. TIME IS A curious thing. It’s there and then it isn’t. One minute we’re giving time away in reckless fits of youth, and
then another, well, we’re clinging to that minute too tightly to do anything with it. It’s the age-old story of life and death. And it’s the present-day story of Matt Whipkey’s forthcoming album, Underwater.
“I think I probably took for granted the idea that maybe I’d always be young,” Whipkey says cautiously, as if listening for a hint of Death’s wiretap on his phone line. “It seemed like there was always next year. One day you’re 33.”
Born from the emotional asphyxiation he experienced during and after the production of last year’s Penny Park: Omaha, NE: Summer 1989 album, Whipkey says Underwater is an audio-biographical account of the darker moments of his early 30s.
“A lot of things happened personally that I had not dealt with for a while,” he confesses. “Then all of a sudden they hit me in kind of a rush.”
That cascade of melancholy, which eventually broke open Whipkey’s floodgates of repression, he says, inspired a
10-song odyssey through the bitter winds of last winter. Whipkey says his introspective journey brought him to the studio almost immediately, which strays from his decade-long formula of grueling preproduction rehearsals.
Though, that’s not the only honesty he says he’s salvaged during the recording process. Underwater, which is slated to come out this February, will attempt to mirror reality though Whipkey’s use of organic instrumentation. And its lyrical content will voice real names, as opposed to the eponymous hero, Penny Park, who pervaded the veteran songwriter’s last effort.
“The songs are a lot more personal,” Whipkey says. “I like the idea now. I hope down the road I’m not like, ‘I shouldn’t have used those people’s real names.’ But for the moment, I’m okay with that.”
Whipkey won Artist of the Year and Album of the Year at the 2013 Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards for what he calls his “double-vinyl ode to a former amusement park,” or “Penny Park,” a pun on the now-extinct Peony Park. But he’s no stranger to the award. The musician also achieved honors in 2008 and 2009 as part of Brad Hoshaw & The Seven Deadlies. >

< “It’s more fun being the main guy winning them,” he says while laughing.
Because accolades don’t necessarily equate to monetary gains, Whipkey admits he relies on guitar lessons and musician residencies to supplement his income. In terms of his band, the unsigned artist says he funds all of his own studio sessions, but relies on crowd funding to distribute his albums.
Whipkey says he encourages fans to donate to his Kickstarter through Nov. 18 to preorder a tangible copy of Underwater.
“I want to make it really stick. I guess at 33 the idea of international celebrity and fortune is pretty silly and unrealistic,” he says, exhaling a deep breathe. “I want to make this work just as a good, solid career, and there’re ways to do that.” Encounter

BY DAY HE’S a mild-mannered assistant director of learning and development at Omaha’s Hyatt hotels. By night and
during weekends, though, Doug Hayko is one the city’s most well-known—and perhaps most infamous—performance artists, one who frequently makes people uncomfortable in the most thought-provoking ways.
The 44-year-old became interested in performance art while studying theater at Creighton University. “It was pretty basic,” he remembers, “but I had an affinity for unique performance pieces.” He continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he again focused on theatre as well as the history of theatre and its more academic side. “I was interested in techniques that did something to engage the audience in different pieces,” he explains, “and I was really interested in doing and embracing and watching pieces that were fused with societal issues. Here were really profound, engaging issues.”
But Hayko found that performing in a university environment was doing so to a limited audience—one who already understood what performance art could deliver intellectually—rather than
to the general public, with whom he could more profoundly engage. For that reason, he left graduate school and put
performance art on hiatus and instead moved to southern California where he began working for Hyatt.
In 1998, though, Hayko returned to Omaha and in 2005 staged an ambitious adaptation of Anton
Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard at the Bemis Underground. It involved layers upon layers
of text, with each audience member taking something different from the experience.

That’s something Hayko strives for with every performance he gives.
“Even though we can’t catch it all,” he emphasizes, “we all carry away something unique.”
Since then, Hayko has offered numerous such experiences, each exploring a situation designed to create provocative encounters, such as East of 72nd: Disrupting the Omaha Landscape in Six Acts (2007), Toxic Lawncare (2010), and Experts at the Museum of Alternative History (2013), each of which represents a small selection of his work. At times, Hayko’s performances have been controversial, such as Sickened at the Shelterbelt Theatre in 2008, which featured the artist curled in a fetal or a kneeling position smeared in fake blood while holding a doll.
Controversial or not, each piece has Hayko’s inimitable sense of intensity. The artist remarks: “Even if it’s a one-time performance, my hope is that it sticks with people and continues conversations long after the piece is over—not the next day, not the next month, but something they recall, and talk about. Isn’t that what any artist wants —for art to have legs and continue to be talked about?” Encounter

SILO BARELY LOOKS open. The only sign indicating its presence at 517 S. 13th Street is a small sticker that reads
“SILO” in black, block letters. The sign, which sits slightly askew, is pasted on a glass door beneath a blank, gray marquee.
It’s intentionally vague. Enticingly exclusive. Silo, a skateboard shop which officially opened in June, doesn’t even list a telephone number.
“It’s almost like going back to beeper days,” says store owner, Brant Van Boening.
That throwback style is kind of the point. Silo, an expansion of the Grand Island original, sells skater fashion gear and lifestyle products to discerning buyers—those who, like Van Boening, 35, are seeking a return to the “glory days” of skateboarding—the early 80s and 90s when teens connected over grainy videos of flips and twists and daredevil rides. It was that time before corporate sponsorship and TV specials—when skating was rebellious, a counter-culture means to express individuality. “Our big thing, or this kind of movement,” Van Boening says, “is just finding kindred spirits in smaller companies that celebrate the uniqueness of what skateboarding was.”

Inside Silo, those kindred spirits are represented in backpacks, shoes, jackets, hand-stitched wallets, and select socks, each carefully arranged on sparse shelves. The store’s whitewashed walls are broken up by a colorful display of local and imported skateboards that look more like artwork than sporting gear. On the shelves, the products include handmade, limited and exclusive lines—outdoor jackets by Patagonia, a California-based company that traces its manufacturing “from fabric to assembly, all the way to our doorstep;” Syndicate, a limited line of VANS (staple of skater street cred) shoes; and CONS, an exclusive range of Converse shoes similar to classic Chuck Taylors but with rugged soles and cushioned insoles, that sums up Silo’s selection: comfortable, high quality, and distinctive.
“There’s not a single product in here that we [Van Boening and his small team] haven’t worn, had, put through the ringer in some shape or form,” he says, adding he hopes to create a personal shopping experience for his customers.
“We want to connect with our customers on a face-to-face basis, and we want to take the time to talk about products in an honest way.”
Those products can be pricey, and there’s definitely an elite quality to them, but Van Boening notes they are not meant to be snobbish. “Everything in here is made to be used and abused,” he says. “[The products are] for that kid with that discerning eye for quality, durability, and specialness.”
So special, in fact, that even the president of VANS needed to track down a pair of his own line recently. Silo received an email (no phone…) from his assistant requesting a pair of the latest Syndicate shoes. “By the time he even saw them, they were already allocated [to select dealers] and out the door,” Van Boening says.
“We took care of him the same day.” Encounter Silo Owner Brant Van Boening

IF YOUR DINING experience at Ahmad’s Persian Cuisine feels less than formal, know that vibe is exactly what Ahmad Nazar intended when
opening his Old Market restaurant 24 years ago.
Nazar came to the United States from his native Iran to study business with plans of returning to his homeland after graduating. However, while he was in Omaha attending Creighton University, the Iranian Revolution transformed his country. Though he still goes back to Iran every five or six years, he said it is not the Iran he grew up in.
At 2 p.m. on a recent Friday afternoon, Ahmad’s should be closing its doors. Lunchtime is supposed to be over. Yet people still file in to sit in the quaint restaurant at 10th and Howard Streets. Nazar greets everyone with a smile and comes out to speak with each of his diners. Some are return customers who he knows by name.
An Indian couple asks Nazar to explain some of the dishes on his lunch menu, which he is glad to do. Seated near the counter are two young women and a little girl. One of the women is heavily inked and, upon receiving her lunch, yells back into the kitchen, “I love you guys!” Later,

after the three have finished their lunch and ordered Turkish coffee, the woman implores the little girl to give Nazar a hug, which after some more prodding, she does.
When asked if it is common for guests to keep filing in even though he’s supposed to be closing to get ready for his dinner crowd, Nazar said he wouldn’t think of turning anyone away. He has customers that come in from all over the metro area and beyond.
“It’s not my place to turn anyone away, it gives me great pleasure sharing my food with others,” he says.
Sharing his dishes with friends—that’s how Nazar started cooking. When he was a student, friends would come and he got in the habit of cooking for them. He says it was too expensive to go out to eat. Pretty soon he had friends coming over to his little apartment requesting certain meals.
“You should be a chef, have your own restaurant,” he says he was told often in those days. He learned to cook under his mother’s watchful eye when he was 14. His first dish was khoresht gheymeh, a beef dish in a sauce with cinnamon, potatoes, and onions. >

< “It wasn’t very good and they let me know,” Nazar says of that first kitchen foray. His family was honest with him and he learned the value of tasting your dish as you prepare it, learning to add spices and seasonings as needed. He kept at it and his meals improved. A recent sampling of the dish is testament to how well Nazar absorbed those early lessons and then built upon them.
In college he was working at different restaurants in Omaha such as V. Mertz and the French Café. He says he loves and respects all cuisines, but when it came to opening a restaurant he knew to stick to his roots.
He had been eyeing the location of his restaurant for a few years. Before it was Ahmad’s, the building was occupied by Taste of Chicago. He always thought it was a great spot for a restaurant. One night he asked the owner to let him know if he ever planned to sell the place. The owner did, in fact, plan to sell, but he already had a buyer. When that deal fell through, Nazar jumped at the chance. Interestingly enough, the restaurant opened at the time of the first Gulf War.
“My wife thought I was crazy and that people would avoid us because of the war,” Nazar says.
But that wasn’t the case. In fact, Nazar says, his restaurant has always hosted a lot of military people. Many are his most faithful customers. He said he’ll often get calls from Offutt Air Force Base higher-ups to reserve tables for groups of officers traveling to the Middle East so they can experience the region’s cuisine before traveling there.
Nazar takes as much pride in the look of the restaurant as he does in the dishes. The paintings depict Persian scenes and he has about 35 pieces he rotates throughout the year whenever he wants to change up the mood. Understandably, he also pays close attention to the food. He said he doesn’t use unhealthy oils and buys the freshest ingredients. He even advises diners how they should enjoy the food.
“Most of our meats do not need knives,” he says. Tender and flavorful, he says. That’s the goal.” Encounter

BLACK LIGHT AND glow sticks turn any day into a festive night. With winter gray and 4:55 p.m. sunsets on the horizon, shades of neon—or
a rad (radiation absorbed dose, not the ‘90s Bart-ism) of millirems—evoke images of a delightfully nuclear winter.

TIMOTHY RIMMER’S DAILY confrontation with his closet can be something of a skirmish. Some days it’s an all-out battle. His wardrobe selections are anything but a grab-and-go affair.
Just what guise will the unisex model and freelance stylist don today? From sequins to serge and from pinstripes to pedal pushers, this gender-bending denizen of the Old Market has some important decisions to make.
“I’m a fashion adventurer,” says the Atlanta transplant whose stylist and performance career has had him criss-crossing the nation over the last two decades. “I always knew I was creative, even as a small child. I like things that are just a little…different.”
Rimmer’s work has been seen in such publications as Black Sophisticate, Pashion, and Real Style.
Looking beyond the glitz and glamor, Rimmer’s dual identities cloak a deeply spiritual persona. He directed a 150-voice choir in Mississippi and he’s raised his voice in praise with guest appearances on the Bobby Jones Gospel television show and in other gigs across the South. His life, he says, has had him inhabiting opposing

worlds, ones that had him doing a delicate balancing act between what he describes as being “street-wise versus church-wise.”
Performing was also something that molded the identity of the artist who was shuttled between Chicago and Mississippi as a child while later being raised by his aunt after his mother died.
“My early life was a lot of back-and-forth, back-and-forth,” he says, “and I know that had a lot to do with shaping who I am today. My dad wasn’t there and my momma had mental health issues. It could get pretty tough at times, you know, a lot of drinking and other things. I had to fend for myself quite a bit, knocking on neighbor’s doors looking for food,” he adds.
“I grew up in juke joints, and that’s where I learned to sing and dance.”
The very act of “being Timothy,” as he describes it, results in a roller coaster ride of ever-morphing identities.
“One day it’s classic chic,” he says. “The next it might be throwback punk and, after that, couture. I’m just fascinated with…with being myself. I’m just fascinated with life.” Encounter

MARIAN FEY MOVED around a lot as a kid. “I always say my mom’s a gypsy,” she says with a laugh.
But wherever she landed, one thing remained constant: dance.
“I’ve been dancing my whole life,” Fey says from her office Downtown. But it was sometime around middle school that dance crossed the line from “I don’t want to go,” she recalls, “to how many times a week can I go? It’s not enough.” By the time she was in high school, Fey danced four days a week and taught for another two. She danced all the way through college and then taught dance and choreography at the Omaha Academy of Ballet after she and her husband settled in Omaha. “I’ve had that connection my entire life to the arts,” she says. “I know personally the impact that arts education had on me and the engagement it caused me and my family to have towards education.”
Today, Fey is president of the Omaha Public Schools Board and heads the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, a fundraising position she assumed in May after leading the Nebraska Arts Council for a year. Before that, Fey founded The Artery, a small nonprofit that brought the New York-based Dancing Classrooms to Omaha. As she expands her scope, Fey hopes to provide opportunities for more children to get involved in the arts—inspiring their passions and encouraging them to engage in their education.
“There’s such a growing body of evidence about the impact that arts education can have on student achievement,” she says. Other than increasing engagement and parental involvement, sometimes the arts simply provide motivation, she says. “I think a lot of kids—and I wasn’t any different—need a reason some mornings to get up and go to school.” That goes for her kids, too. “For at least three of our children,” she says, “if they hadn’t had music to look forward to everyday at school, it could have been a tough sell getting them up and going.”
Fey’s interest in her children’s education led her to run for a seat on the OPS board in 2011, where she advocates for more arts education. Her tenure has been consumed by searches for superintendents and board structure changes. But despite the setbacks, she says she’s proud “OPS has never abandoned the arts.”
Add her role as elected official to fundraiser, and Fey’s transition from participant and teacher to behind-the-scenes mover and shaker is complete. At the Cultural Endowment, Fey travels around the state building relationships with senators and donors, and she manages a private fund that should reach $10 million (with its public match) by 2016. The fund provides grants to arts and humanities organizations around the state, impacting thousands of Nebraska kids.
It’s a new role, but Fey says she still feels like a teacher articulating ideas and concepts—just to a broader audience. And the passion that stirred her as a child—her reason to get up every morning—will never stand down. Encounter
