Temple Beth Torah Shalom November/December 2014 Issue Finding Your Spark of Light this Hanukkah Season The lights of Hanukkah increase each night, bringing an intensification of joy and happiness into our lives as we celebrate our Judaism with our family and friends with the kindling of every new candle. Light is a powerful element in Jewish tradition. The beauty of light was brought into the world by God on the first day of creation: And God said, yehi or vayehi or, “Let there be light, and there was light.” (Gen. 1:3) Since that first day, light has been a symbol of goodness, life and beauty. Each week we are reminded of the power of illumination as we kindle the Sabbath lights. The magical brightness that is suddenly created by a human act is a testament to God’s presence in our lives. While the kindling of a candle on a Hanukkiyah may be scientifically explained through the combustion of certain chemical elements, the emotion that it stirs within us as an untouchable element that dispels darkness is not explainable in human (or scientific) terms. The Zohar, the great mystical book of Kabbalistic wisdom and power, describes light as the element that reveals the Divine Secret that was concealed from mankind – that is, until God desired to emanate the light and create the world. The Zohar declares the first, eternal light, as the “hard spark,” from which a fountain of colors spouted, giving our world radiance and beauty. (Zoh. Beresheet A:1,2) Without light, in other worlds, there would be no colors. And without colors, there would only be darkness. Hanukkah reminds us each day that if we allow ourselves to be open to receiving the light of God, we can increase the joy in our lives each day that we light another candle. Just as the number of candles on the Hanukkiyah increase, so does the light in the room and, in sequence, our souls, also increase. So as you light your Hanukkiyah this season, take a moment to think about what is special about your own life. Let that “special thought” be your theme throughout the holiday, so that you come back to it again on day two and so on through the eight nights of the festival. It could be anything, such as the love you feel for your children or a close friend, the gratitude you feel for being alive, or the hope you have for a more peaceful world. See if the emotions in your heart increase each night as the light is increased with each candle. Hopefully you will find that, like the Zohar teaches, the light that is within you spouts fountains of colors throughout your soul, so that each night you feel more powerful, more alive, and more passionate about whatever “theme” you have chosen as your point of concentration. May all of our lives become illuminated by the Divine Spark of God during this upcoming Hanuakkah season! L’shalom, Rabbi Andrew L. Finding Your Spark of Light this Hanukkah Season The lights of Hanukkah increase each night, bringing an intensification of joy and happiness into our lives as we celebrate our Judaism with our family and friends with the kindling of every new candle. Light is a powerful element in Jewish tradition. Temple Beth Torah Shalom November/December 2014 Issue

I  am  not  a  fan  of  Facebook  challenges.    I  resent  being  tagged  in  posts  telling  me  to  pour  ice  over  my  head,  change  my  status  to  a  par;cular  word  or  some  inane  admission,  or  even  to  spend  a  week  lis;ng  what  I  am  thankful  for  in  my  life.    Perhaps  an  aspect  of  Facebook  is  now  that  of  a  very  public  chain  le>er  and  I,  personally,  am  unwilling  to  take  part.    This  does  not  mean  that  I  do  not  support  the  causes  of  disease  awareness  or  social  jus;ce.  I  am  just  more  likely  to  post  an  informa;ve  ar;cle  about  the  subject  or  to  show  my  support  through  unpublicized  tzedakah  where  I  see  fit.

The  “thankfulness”  challenge,  ironically,  had  me  very  frustrated.    Numerous  people  requested  that  I  list  three  things  each  day  for  a  week  for  which  I  am  grateful.    I  believe  this  made  numerous  assump;ons:  first,  that  I  had  the  inclina;on  or  ;me  to

be  on  Facebook  each  day;  second,  that  the  things  for  which  I  am  grateful  are  appropriate  for  the  newsfeed  of  five-‐hundred  people;  and  third,  that  perhaps  I  am  not  acknowledging  things  for  which  I  am  grateful  on  a  daily  basis…hence  the  term  “challenge.”

I  am  sure  many  of  you  were  as  moved  as  I  was  by  Rabbi  Rosenkranz’s  “Le>er  to  God”  at  the  Kol  Nidre  service.    I  think  of  it  each  ;me  I  see  a  sunset  now  even  though  Florida  sunsets  have  always  been  one  of  my  most  favorite  things.    I  missed  them  for  the  ten  years  I  spent  up  north,  especially  during  my  dreary  winters  in  Manha>an.    I  also  missed  Publix  and  parking  lots,  but  that’s  an  en;rely  different  story.

Heading  into  Thanksgiving  and  Chanukah,  specified  ;mes  when  we  thank  God  for  our  blessings  and  miracles,  I  thought  I  might  share  my  own  personal  approach  to  acknowledging  our  Creator  for  the  many  blessings  in  life.    The  concept  of  “giving  thanks”  is  built  into  our  daily  prayer  liturgy.    Toward  the  end  of  the    Amidah,  which  is  the  core  of  the  worship  service  and  what  it  all  leads  up  to,  there  is  a  prayer  called  “hoda’ah,”  or  thanksgiving,  followed  by  the  “birkat  shalom,”  the  blessing  for  peace,  and  then  we  conclude  with  the  silent  prayer.    There  it  is.    That’s  my  ;me.    That  is  where  I  fill  my  head  with  visions  of  the  things  I  am  most  grateful  for,  sending  God  the  message  that  I  know  these  are  giUs  from  my  Creator.

These  things  can  be  monumental  or  small  moments  I  experienced  during  the  week,  but  I  relive  them  as  visions  for  God  needs  no  words:  Blake,  so  proud  that  he  can  finally  read  Green  Eggs  and  Ham  all  by  himself  that  he  reads  it  to  his  Bubbie  on  the  phone  and  then  again  to  his  brother  in  our  family  room;  the  beau;ful  tree  in  our  backyard  with  its  roots  spreading  out  like  fingers  that    has  inspired  us  to  create  a  fairy  village  around  its  trunk;  the  dog  whose  abounding  love  is  filling  the  void  leU  by  our  beloved  Libby;  the  feel  of  the  Florida  air  on  my  face  as  I  realize  that  the  humidity  is  finally  depar;ng  for  a  while.        Con$nued  on  Page  25.

I  hope  that  you  will  find  ;me  to  walk  down  the  preschool  hallways  when  you  are  next  in  the  Temple.    You  will  see  drawings,  photo  exposés  and  literary  charts  which  illustrate  the  talents  and  skills  of  the  children  in  our  school.    Their  crea;ve  expressions  depict  the  mul;-‐faceted  ways  we  teach  the  children  Jewish  Holidays  and  Jewish  values.  In  September  we  prac;ced  the  tradi;on  of  ea;ng  apples  dipped  in  honey.    We  supplemented  that  tradi;onal  ac;vity  with  the  crea;on  of  graphs  illustra;ng  a  poll   conducted   of   the   children’s   favorite   color   apples.     Next,   our   drama;c   play   centers   were  transformed  into  Sukkahs  created  and  decorated  by  the  children.    One  of  our  classes  created  a  Sukkah  so   impressive,   that   the   Hebrew   school   class   that   shares   the   room   with   them   added   their   own  decora;ons   and   leU   notes   of   encouragement   inside.     Imagine   the   glee   the   preschoolers   felt   to   be  recognized  by  “the  big  kids!”    The  next  week  brought  an  up  close  look  at  the  Torah  by  the  three  and  four  year  old  classes  where  the  Rabbi  had  each  of  the  children  iden;fy  a  Hebrew  word  in  the  Torah,  and  then  he  translated  that  word  and  explained  it  to  the  child.    We  concluded  the  day’s  ac;vi;es  with  a   very   fes;ve   Simchat   Torah  parade   through   the  building,   led  by   the  Rabbi,   and  a>ended  by   some  visi;ng  parents  who  marched  with  us,  carrying  the  Torah.  This  past  month  we  also  collaborated  with  the   Commission   for   Jewish   Educa;on   and   the   PJ   Library   to   bring   a   fes;ve   Tot   Shabbat   and   Sukkot  program  to  the  school  and  community.    ! Eating in and decorating the Sukkah transmits longstanding Jewish traditions, which our curriculum utilizes to help the children also learn and appreciate the traditional importance of welcoming guests, respect for others, and kindness to strangers. By weaving the values of friendship, generosity and celebrating the unique nature of different people and cultures into the celebrations of Sukkot, Simchat Torah, and the upcoming secular holiday of Thanksgiving our blended curriculum teaches (and the children learn) vital life lessons through our religious traditions. The children will use the underlying Jewish Values presented in our preschool through the traditional manner of celebrating these important holidays, throughout their lifetimes. !  “Blessed  is  the  match  consumed  in  kindling  flame Blessed  is  the  flame  that  burns  in  the  secret  fastness  of  the  heart.” ~Hannah  Senesh

Dear  Friends,

The  quote  above  is  from  Hannah  Senesh,  who  was  one  of  37  Jews  from  Pales;ne  who  parachuted  into  Yugoslavia  in  an  a>empt  to  rescue  Hungarian  Jews  from  the  Nazis.  She  was  arrested  and  eventually  executed  by  the  Nazis.  S;ll,  she  embraced  her  Judaism  and  wrote  many  poems  while  being  held  in  jail…..as  the  one  above  referring  to  the  Chanukah  candles.  One  of  our  goals  here  at  our  Religious  School  is  to  ignite  and  keep  those  flames  of  Judaism  burning  in  the  hearts  of  our  children,  parents  and  congrega;on.

I  will  share  some  of  the  things  that  have  been  experienced  in  our  school  so  far  this  year.  Linda  Schreier’s  third  grade  class  made  Rosh  Hashanah  cards,  which  she  delivered  to  the  residents  of  Morse  Geriatric.  Linda

just  received  a  thank  you  note  for  the  cards,  as  they  warmed  many  hearts  receiving  these  wishes  from  young  children.  I  hope  you  had  a  chance  to  see  the  wonderfully  crea;ve  Sukkahs  that  were  in  the  lobby  made  by  this  class  as  well.

Jane  Gartner’s  second  grade  class  has  their  art  work  about  Crea;on  displayed  on  the  bulle;n  board  outside  their  room!

Gerri  Becker’s  fiUh  grade  class  will  be  wri;ng  le>ers  to  a  children’s  class  in  Israel.  I’m  sure  this  will  be  brought  into  their  Project  Based  Learning  ac;vity  throughout  the  year  as  well.

Our  Kindergarten,  First  and  Second  graders  will  be  crea;ng  extraordinary  Tallitot,  each  with  their  own  theme  that  will  eventually  become  one  Tallit  presented  to  Temple  Beth  Torah  for  blessings  that  are  given  by  Rabbi  Rosenkranz  and  Cantor  Barry.

#HINEINI,  our  new  program  (that  replaced  Mitzvah  Corps)  for  8th  &  9th  graders,  and  including  our  7th  grade  as  well  has  experienced  excep;onal  programs  to  begin  this  year.  Our  first  speaker  was  from  the  GiU  of  Life  (Bone  Marrow  Donor  Program).  That  evening’s  program  also  included  Tashlich  and  a  chance  for  everyone  to  sound  a  shofar!  Last  week  our  program  speaker  was  from  JAFCO  (Jewish  Adop;on  and  Foster  Care  Op;ons).  It  was  so  thought  provoking  and  touched  the  hearts  of  many  students.  One  student  was  so  moved  that  they  expressed  how  lucky  they  know  they  are  and  how  apprecia;ve  they  are  to  their  parents.  The  students  also  made  Chanukah  decora;ons  to  go  to  the  JAFCO  group  home  and  ended  the  evening  performing  the  mitzvah  of  shaking  the  lulav  in  the  Sukkah.      Con$nued  on  page  26.

!Temple Beth Torah is always an exciting place, but since

Rabbi Rosenkranz has joined us as our new spiritual leader, the last few months have been exceptional! !

•Rabbi Rosenkranz has quickly become an integral part of our religious school and preschool. Together with our Directors, Meredith Hirschberg and Sandy Wilensky, and our dedicated teaching staffs, Rabbi Rosenkranz has contributed towards creating wonderful educational experiences for our children. !•Our services have been particularly moving and spiritual, and reflect the hard work and preparation of both our clergy and lay leaders. !•We have had, and continue to have, wonderful programs and social events. Alexander Dukhovny, Chief Rabbi of Ukraine’s Progressive Jewish community, will be at TBT on Thursday evening, November 13th. In addition, I hope everyone will come to the Installation Shabbat on December 5th as well as the Gala on December 6th and picnic on December 7th – a fantastic weekend to honor Rabbi Rosenkranz and celebrate TBT’s 36th anniversary! !•In these last months, Rabbi Rosenkranz and I have met regularly, discussed everything, and offered each other support and advice. We have begun to create a special partnership that greatly benefits our congregation as the needs of our members are now being served by a team with the same goal: to create a loving, educational, and spiritual community for all. !!Looking forward to 2015 and more exceptional things to come at Temple Beth Torah! !L’Shalom, Sara Marcus, President !

YOUTH ACTIVITIES

Temple  Beth  Torah’s  Youth

Programming fosters a strong Jewish

Identity in our children and teens as

well as their commitment to one

another and the Temple at large. Our

goals are to create a nurturing, safe,

and welcoming environment for

children, teens, and young adults.

We encourage them to socialize and

develop a lasting commitment to

Judaism and the Jewish People.

Temple Beth Torah is proud to offer TiBToFTY (grades 9-12) and TiBToFTY Jr. (grades 6-8) both of which are affiliated with the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), and Southeast Region of NFTY (NFTY-STR). TiBToFTY teens also participate in NFTY-STR regional kallot, which happen four times a year; these weekends provide exploration and insight into their Jewish identity.

TiBToFTY is run by a board of six dedicated teens and grade representatives that are responsible for planning and executing programming for the year, with the help of their Youth Director. The senior youth group president also serves on the Temple Beth Torah Board of Trustees. Our activities include TiBToFTY services, lock-ins, and their original NFTY style program   “Third Thursday.” Teens also have volunteer opportunities for service hours, social action, and community fundraisers. Kindergarten through fifth grade temple youth experience programs filled with exciting activities, engaging rituals, and informal activities that bring Judaism to life. These programs are designed  with   the  child’s  age  and  abilities   in  mind.  Some  of  the  programs are designed for the kids, and other events encourage family-child interactions. Young Adult Connection keeps in touch with our high school graduates, and college students. Whether they are attending college, living at home or away, or working, we maintain connections and let them know the temple family has them in their thoughts. We send holiday greetings, Hanukkah gifts, Purim goodies, and prepare graduation gift baskets. Jewish Teen Initiative (JTI) of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County offers a variety of community-wide social events and service learning projects for local middle and high school students. From continuing education to Israel programs,

overseas experiences, overnight summer camps, Jewish Student Connection, leadership, philanthropy and social action, health and recreation, sporting events, youth group or regional youth movements, JTI has something for everyone! Explore  all   that  Temple  Beth  Torah’s  Youth  Department  has  to  offer.  Each  year  we  grow  and  expand  our  program.  The  preschool  acOviOes  for  Sukkot  beauOfully  segue  into  the  richness  of  our  lessons  about

Thanksgiving.  First,  we  harvest,  preschool  style.    The  children  will  shuck  corn,  plant  seeds,  and  invite  friends,  families  and  guests  to  share  in  the  bounty.    Food  collecOons  for  the  less  fortunate  will  be  woven  into  lessons  about  sharing  and  tzedakah.    Early  in  November,  we  will  first  welcome  guests  for  one  of  our  most  special  days,  as  we  enjoy  the  annual  Man  in  My  Life  Day.    The  children  will  share  the  wonders  of  our  preschool  with  their  male  role  models,  many  of  whom  do  not  usually  observe  what  we  do  during  school  hours.    Later  in  the  month,  our  families  are  invited  to  school  for  our  joyous  Thanksgiving  “Feast”  and  program  during  the  week  of  Thanksgiving.  Parents  and  teachers  will  work  together  in  helping  the  children  decorate  costumes  and  cook  special  dishes  to  share  at  this  school-‐wide  celebraOon.

More  acOvity  awaits  our  return  from  the  Thanksgiving  break.    The  focus  will  shiM  to  Chanukah.  While  enjoying  the  idea  of  receiving  giMs  and  gelt,  all  of  the  children  will  also  experience  the  joy  of  sharing  and  giving.    Each  child  will  make  a  card  for  the  residents  at  the  Morse  Geriatric  Center.    Those  cards  will  be  hand  delivered  by  the  PreK  classes,  who  will  return  there  for  our  annual  holiday  sing-‐a-‐long  with  the  residents.  It  is  not  possible  to  determine  who  enjoys  themselves  more,  the  children  or  the  residents!    We  will  also  hold  our  Chanukah  giM  drive  for  the  children  serviced  by  the  Ferd  and  Gladys  Alpert  Jewish  Family  Services.    These  lessons  of  L’dor  va  Dor  and  tzedakah,  blended  into  acOviOes  of  enjoyment  make  a  lasOng  impression  on  young  minds  and  hearts.

Please  save  the  date  of  December  12th  for  our  next  Tot  Shabbat,  which  will  feature  another  Chanukah  Program  with  PJ  Library  and  the  Commission  for  Jewish  EducaOon.  Watch  for  flyers  about  this  exciOng  program  for  all  young  families.

Have  a  happy  and  healthy  Thanksgiving  season.      May  you  and  your  families  always  have  much  for  which  to  be  thankful.

Temple Beth Torah Shalom November/December 2014 Issue

Beth  Schafer  has  this  wonderful  song  enOtled  “A  Way  to  Say  Ah”  inspired  by  the  prayer  Shehecheyanu.    She  asks,  “a  miracle  happened  today,  was  I  aware,  did  I  even  care?”    Judaism  encourages  us  to  try  to  be  present  in  our  own  lives,  to  aKempt  to  not  just  go  through  the  moOons,  but  to  be  aware  and  engage  with  the  world  around  us  on  a  daily  basis.    I  don’t  need  Facebook  to  remind  me  to  do  this.    I  have  four  thousand  years  of  tradiOon  and  a  family  that  demands  that  I  stop  and  look…the  hamster  moved  her  treat,  the  “soldier  base”  has  a  new  addiOon,  my  three-‐year-‐old  has  memorized  the  Pledge  of  Allegiance.    My  graOtude  could  fill  a  book.    A  real  book.    Not  a  Facebook.

My  wish  for  all  of  us  in  this  next  holiday  season  is  that  the  love  around  our  Thanksgiving  tables  helps  us  strengthen  our  bonds  of  family  and  friendship  and  that  the  lights  of  the  Chanukiah  bring  us  renewed  faith  in  the  power  of  hope.    Let  us  bless  God  through  blessing  each  other.

!I  invite  all  of  you  to  walk  the  halls  of  our  school.  You  will  be  amazed  at  the  creaOveness  of  our  staff  and  students  and  the  messages  that  you  will  see.  I  have  21  Madrichim  to  assist  in  the  classrooms  and  the  office.  They  designed  a  Star  of  David  on  one  of  the  bulleOn  boards  which  has  their  handprints  and  pictures  aKached.

I  will  conOnue  to  share  the  acOviOes  of  different  grades  in  each  newsleKer  with  you.  Please  visit  our  FaceBook  page  as  well  –  we  contribute  weekly!  In  January  I  will  be  introducing  a  comprehensive  and  computer/ipad/tablet  friendly  Hebrew  curriculum  which  will  follow  the  students  through  each  grade!

Please  mark  your  calendars  for  Sunday  November  2nd.  We  begin  the  morning  with  a  Family  Service.  Following  the  Family  Service  the  students  will  go  to  their  classes.  Parents  of  students  in  grades  Kindergarten,  First,  Second  and  Third  Grade  will  enjoy  a  light  snack  and  then  be  led  in  an  educaOonal  program  by  Rabbi  Rosenkranz  and  Cantor  Barry  unOl  dismissal  for  everyone  at  11:30  am.  Following  Religious  School,  from  Noon  –  4  pm,  we  are  hosOng  a  Book  Fair  at  the  Barnes  and  Noble  in  Wellington.  There  will  be  story  telling  sessions  and  a  special  presentaOon  of  hand-‐picked  books  just  for  us!

On  Sunday,  December  14th,  we  will  be  having  our  full  Religious  School  session  devoted  to  the  celebraOon  of  Chanukah.  Parents  are  invited  to  aKend  and  parOcipate  with  their  children.  The  culminaOon  of  the  morning  will  be  a  major  surprise  that  will  have  been  assembled  throughout  the  morning.  It  is  a  regularly  scheduled  Sunday  session  not  to  be  missed!  Latkes  that  have  been  ordered  will  be  available  for  pick  up  this  Sunday  as  well  –  watch  for  details!!!

On  a  personal  note,  I  am  so  totally  enjoying  my  music  Ome  each  week  with  the  Preschool!  They  are  amazing  and  their  greeOngs  throughout  the  day  warm  my  heart.  It  is  so  wonderful  to  establish  this  relaOonship  with  Sandy  Wilensky  and  her  staff  and  students  and  have  the  Religious  School  and  Preschool  so  in  tune  with  each  other  (pun  intended!).

And  so,  as  we  kindle  the  lights  of  Chanukah  with  our  family,  I  hope  you  will  share  in  our  united  Temple  Beth  Torah  quest  to  carry  on  the  message  of  Hannah  Senesh  and  not  only  physically  light  these  candles,  but  allow  the  flame  of  Judaism  to  warm  your  hearts  as  well.  This  is  my  goal  as  your  Interim  Director  of  your  Religious  School.

B’Shalom,

Meredith  Hirschberg
