THE ESSENCE OF HANUKKAH
Having hardly caught my breath from the intensity of the High Holiday period, I find myself writing a rare
Hanukkah article for our bulletin in October, Hanukkah falling this year on Thanksgiving. So rather than
the often cliched ‘December dilemma’ of separating between Hanukkah and Christmas/secular New Year
as celebrated by the vast majority of our neighbors, this year we face a ‘November dilemma’ of separating
between (or connecting?) Hanukkah and Thanksgiving.
Some research indicates (there are differing opinions) that this year’s coinciding of Hanukkah and
Thanksgiving has not occurred in 125 years, and won’t recur for some 79,000 years! Our Jewish lunar
calendar is adjusted 7 times in every 19 year cycle so that Pesach always occurs in Spring, a fact
referenced in Pesach’s very name – chag ha’aviv/the Holiday of Spring.
I have no doubt that the usual proximity of Hanukkah to Christmas, is a major reason that an otherwise
minor Jewish holiday has been catapulted into the forefront of Jewish consciousness and observance.
Nevertheless its messages remain as cogent as ever, for it represents brotherly love, religious
independence and the very human yearning for freedom. Technology might, on one hand, have made life
easier, but on the other hand, witness for example the proliferation of hate on the internet. This makes our
vigilance against hate, as represented by the light of Hanukkah’s candles, all the more urgent.
The majority of Jews celebrate Hanukkah in winter (in some countries like South Africa it is summer). For
us it is a noteworthy contradiction that the Hebrew month of Kislev in which Hanukkah occurs, is the
shortest month of the year, with the least daylight. Concerning Hanukkah’s message of spreading the light
of Torah, the Talmud records a debate between Rabbis Shammai and Hillel over the order of lighting
Hanukkah candles. Shammai advocates starting with 8 and decreasing each day to represent the amount of
oil that was left to light the Temple’s menorah. Hillel, whose opinion we follow, advocates the opposite -
begin with 1 and increase each day, in accordance with the Jewish principle of – ma’alin bakodesh v’lo
moridin/in matters of holiness we increase, we ascend, we never descend.
Hanukkah, in essence, was a fight over the soul of our People. Soul in Hebrew is neshama. The Hebrew
word for ‘the oil’/hashemen is spelled with the same 4 letters as neshama/soul, in a different order. This
Thanksgiving why not add some latkes to your turkey, pumpkin and cranberry in a combined sense of
thanksgiving that both holidays represent.
Join us at B’nai Israel as we celebrate Hanukkah on Shabbat November 30th with a special Hanukkah
musicfest, and at 6pm on Wednesday December 4th, the last night of Hanukkah, for a festival of food,
music and fun! May your Hanukkah be one of joy and light.
Hazzan Ivor Lichterman

Blessing over Hanukkah Candles all eight nights
Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam
Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe
asher kidishanu b'mitz'votav v'tzivanu
Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us
l'had'lik neir shel Hanukkah. (Amen)
to light the lights of Hanukkah. (Amen)
Blessing for Hanukkah all eight nights
Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu melekh ha'olam
Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe
she'asah nisim la'avoteinu bayamim haheim baziman hazeh. (Amen)
Who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time
Shehecheyanu (first night only)
Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam
Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe
shehecheyanu v'kiyimanu v'higi'anu laz'man hazeh. (Amein)
who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season (Amen)
The candles are placed in the Hanukkiah from right to left. After reciting the blessings, use the
shammus to light the Hanukkah candles from left to right (newest to oldest). Candles should be
left burning until they go out on their own. They must burn for more than half an hour. Stand-
ard Hanukkah candles burn for about an hour.
On Friday night, Hanukkah candles are lit before Shabbat Candles, before sunset.

CANTORS DISCRETIONARY FUND
It is customary to honor our clergy with a monetary gift on occasions when they have extended themselves for
us. In times of distress and mourning, for simchas, and any other acts of kindness, a donation can be sent to
the Cantor’s Discretionary Fund in appreciation.
This fund is used by Hazzan Lichterman to provide financial aid to congregants in need, support educational
projects and programming, etc. Please consider a gift to this fund so our Hazzan can continue his good
works.
All contributions to the fund will be acknowledged in the bulletin.
Beginning in December, the Synagogue office will be closed on Tuesdays. There currently is limited
activity and by closing it will allow us to manage our resources more efficiently. As with any other times the
office is closed, for pastoral emergencies you can contact Hazzan Lichterman at 520-250-1407. Your support with
this change is very much appreciated.
A meeting was held on Sunday October 20th to discuss the future Rabbinical needs at CBI. Partici-
pants at the meeting included your board of Trustees, the members of the Rabbi Search Committee and past
presidents of B’nai Israel. In addition, feedback had been solicited and many congregants provided input into
our approach. After an extremely productive discussion with a diverse range of views, it was decided to delay
our search for one year our search for a full time Rabbi. During this time we will implement a model using a
full time Clergy (Hazzan Lichterman) and a part time clergy (Rabbi Jason Miller). We are in the process of
having discussions with Rabbi Miller on the amount of time he will spend with us and his specific responsibil-
ities. At some point in mid 2014, we will meet to reassess this model to determine whether we want to con-
tinue it further or make a change. Although this is a difficult decision to make, it has been made much easi-
er with the superior leadership that our Hazzan has provided by assuming responsibility as our fulltime clergy
for the past year and into the future.
My family and I wish you a wonderful Hanukkah. May the lights of this festival shine brightly upon
you and your loved ones.

OUR NOVEMBER B’NAI MITZVAH
Carolyn Glasser will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at Congregation B’nai Israel. Carolyn is the daughter of Marc and Susan Glasser, and the sister of Brian Glasser. She is the grand-daughter of Claire Glasser and the late Jasha Glasser of Cedar Grove, NJ. Carolyn is a 7th grader at Perrysburg Jr. High School where she is an Honor Student, and plays flute for the school band. She enjoys swimming and hanging out with her friends. She loves animals, and dreams of becoming a veterinarian. Carolyn enjoyed Camp Wise and Baldwin Wallace Band Camp. Carolyn is looking forward to celebrating her Bat Mitzvah with her family and friends. She would like to thank Cantor Lichterman for all of his help.
Lexi Marie Hendel will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Con-gregation B’nai Israel. Lexi is a 7th grade honor roll student at Liberty Benton Middle School in Findlay, Ohio. Lexi plays soccer on a Findlay travel team, sings in the school choir, and is hoping to be part of the student council again this year. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, playing sports, playing games on her IPod, and family vacations to Sanibel Island, Iowa, Illinois, and Rhode Island. Lexi’s Mitzvah project was to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Lexi realizes how lucky she is to be a healthy young lady and that every child is not as fortunate. To raise money, Lexi organized and completed two fundraisers. The first project involved working with Gordon Food Supply (GFS) selling a small selection of prod-ucts. Lexi tried to collect $1 from every person she knew for her second fundraiser. The fundraisers were both fun and successful and Lexi is looking forward to making her donation after her Bat Mitzvah. Lexi is very excited to share her upcoming Bat Mitzvah with her mother and father, Ashley and Peter Hendel, older brother Nathan, and all her friends and relatives. She would like to thank Cantor Lichterman, Fagie Benstein, her Hebrew teacher in Findlay, and her Sunday school teachers for helping her reach this important moment in her Jewish life!

OUR RELIGIOUS SCHOOL STUDENTS
Sammy Thaler
Sylvia Musher-Eizenman
Religious School is moving along at a fast pace. Our Torah Tots preschoolers had a great time learning about ani-
mals in their various habitats during a visit from the Toledo Zoo Van. They had fun seeing many animals and visit-
ing with their friends from Temple Shomer Emunim. The confirmation class is in the midst of their comparative
religion course and visited the Hindu Temple, Rosary Cathedral and Islamic Center. All of our students have been
enjoying our collaborative programs and look forward to more throughout the coming year. The seventh grade ac-
companied Hazzan Lichterman to Beth Shalom Cemetery, where a genizah ceremony was held as the students
learned and participated in the tradition of burying old ritual items and books.

High Holyday Food Drive – A Community Mitzvah
Congregation B’nai Israel’s Annual USY High Holy Day food drive was a huge success! Shopping bags were packed
with food, paper products, and personal hygiene items AND were delivered to the Jewish Family Service Food Bank.
High Holy Day food drives are the main source of food and other items for the Food Bank which is open to the gen-
eral community. Last year JFS provided food and other necessary items to 544 people. A significant number of these
people were newly unemployed who never thought they would ever have to use a food bank. Thanks to your dona-
tions, fewer people in the community will go hungry during these very difficult financial times. Your thoughtfulness
and generosity convey concern and compassion for which the recipients are truly gratefully. THANK YOU and todah
rabah!

You know that Alan Dershowitz, the preemi-nent defense lawyer in America today, has had an impact on the lives of storied clients like O. J. Simpson, Claus von Bülow, Bill Clinton, Julian Assange, Jeffrey Mac-Donald, Patty Hearst, Mike Tyson, and many more.
