November 2012 Dear Franciscans, It is hard to believe that November is upon us, especially for me. As you know, Ellie’s due date is this month and it seemed like we’d never get here. Tyler and I are so very excited for her arrival, and we thank you all for the wonderful love and support that you have offered us in the form of prayers, hospitality, and with the wonderful baby shower in September. The exact dates of my pater- nity leave will be determined by Ellie, but Tyler and I look forward to having time together with her. I am very thankful to be given the gift of six-weeks of leave in my contract and know that it will be a special time in our family. I will likely miss the seasons of Advent and Christmas while I am on leave, which are my favorite times in the Church year. I love the colors, the hymns, and the sense of anticipation. This anticipation is something that I already am experiencing, in my own sort of advent as we wait for Ellie. I don’t await her arrival for the dirty diapers, for the child tax credit, or the baby shower gifts. And in the same way, Advent is a time to look forward to something, but it should be something more than gifts, turkey, or a man wearing a red suit. Advent is about the inbreaking of God into our world. Advent is the time of year where we remember and relive the glorious love affair that God has with all of Creation; that God, in a radical act of love, took on human form to show us the way of God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven. So I’ll leave you with the question of “what do you look forward to this Advent season?” There is nothing wrong with saying good food, good friends, and good times. But I’d urge you to start there, and then go deeper. What does your soul long for? Where would love to see God’s Kingdom burst forth in your life and in our world? And once you have a notion of that longing, take a step in that direction. May God be with you and bless you this, and every, day. Blessings, The Rev. Robert Black ROBERT BLACK ASSISTANT RECTOR

November 2012

Dear Franciscans,

It is hard to believe that November is upon us, especially for me.

As you know, Ellie’s due date is this month and it seemed like

we’d never get here. Tyler and I are so very excited for her arrival,

and we thank you all for the wonderful love and support that you

have offered us in the form of prayers, hospitality, and with the

wonderful baby shower in September. The exact dates of my pater-

nity leave will be determined by Ellie, but Tyler and I look forward

to having time together with her. I am very thankful to be given the

gift of six-weeks of leave in my contract and know that it will be a

special time in our family.

I will likely miss the seasons of Advent and Christmas while I am

on leave, which are my favorite times in the Church year. I love the colors, the hymns, and

the sense of anticipation. This anticipation is something that I already am experiencing, in

my own sort of advent as we wait for Ellie. I don’t await her arrival for the dirty diapers, for

the child tax credit, or the baby shower gifts. And in the same way, Advent is a time to look

forward to something, but it should be something more than gifts, turkey, or a man wearing a

red suit. Advent is about the inbreaking of God into our world. Advent is the time of year

where we remember and relive the glorious love affair that God has with all of Creation; that

God, in a radical act of love, took on human form to show us the way of God’s Kingdom on

earth as it is in Heaven.

So I’ll leave you with the question of “what do you look forward to this Advent season?”

There is nothing wrong with saying good food, good friends, and good times. But I’d urge

you to start there, and then go deeper. What does your soul long for? Where would love to

see God’s Kingdom burst forth in your life and in our world? And once you have a notion of

that longing, take a step in that direction. May God be with you and bless you this, and

every, day.

Blessings,

The Rev. Robert Black

Thank you all for your faithful and gracious contributions to our 2013 stewardship program. We

have received pledges from 167 families and individuals, 21 of which were new pledges, and 71

were increased from their 2012 pledges. We also know that life circumstances change, and we are

especially thankful to those who, though they had to decrease their pledge, have chosen to continue

to support the mission and ministries of St. Francis. Our current pledged total for 2013 is $498,920,

which is a huge step towards our goal, but we're not quite there yet. Again, thank you all so much

for your pledged contributions and you'll be sure to hear more from the Stewardship Committee on

how we can be blessed to be a blessing.

If you have not yet made your 2013 pledge, know that it isn't too late to make a pledge and we look

forward to hearing from you soon. There are some Franciscans who we expected to hear from, but

have not yet. Pledging is not only a spiritual discipline with is helpful to you, but it also greatly

assists the church in planning for the 2013 budget regarding staff, programs, and special projects.

David and I have been members of St. Francis since 1976. I grew up in

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Gastonia. After high school, I came to

Greensboro to attend Greensboro College. I taught High School Spanish

for 1 year and then joined the business world of Xerox Corporation in

training and public relations and continued in this field for 25 years. Our

two sons, Brian and Allen, were members of St. Francis from birth

through college. They both live in Greensboro, work with David, happily

married to Claire and Abbey respectively and parents to our wonderful

grandchildren - Dallas (7), Bo (3), and Max (1).

Currently, I am serving the last month of a 15 year term on the Guilford

County Board of Education elected to represent District 7 – my term ex-

pires the 4th of December. I have been a member of the Junior League of Greensboro since 1982

and served as Sustainer President. After the 3 schools systems in Guilford County merged in

1993, I was honored to serve as President of the Guilford County Council of PTAs. Also, I am

Past President of the Greensboro College Alumni Board and currently serve on the board.

Some of my past and current service to St. Francis includes the following: Parish Life Chair, Day

School Chair, Co-Chair Book Sale, Co-Founder of Shepherds Staff, Vestry, Day School Board,

Adult Forum Chair, Lay Reader, Lay Eucharistic Minister, and Prayer Shawl Ministry.

St. Francis has been a special church home for me throughout these many years. Both of our

children were baptized and received a wonderful Christian education at St. Francis. I have been

there as it grew in numbers and I’ve been there as it has struggled. I have never thought of being

anywhere else but in the pew at 3506 Lawndale Drive. The church has provided us with many

dear, life-long friends. It has supported me in times of need and sadness as well as in times of

happiness and praise. It is my church home and I am honored to be asked to serve on the vestry

once again.

St. Francis Honor Cards are a wonderful way to remem-

ber friends and family during the Christmas season. All

of the funds go directly to outreach throughout the com-

munity and the world. Cards are 1 for $5, 3 for $10 and

6 for $20. They are available in the Church Office be-

tween 9:00am - 5:00pm Monday thru Friday.

My wife Karen and I moved our family to Greensboro ten years ago. At

the time of the move, we were attending a Catholic church (Karen was

raised a Catholic and I was raised a Methodist). Karen suggested that we

look into attending an Episcopal church after years of not finding a church

we could call our home. Our first experience at St. Francis was such a

moving experience from Father Michael’s sermon to the congregation wel-

coming us like family. Michael and Jamie made a point to speak to us and

answer all of our questions. Needless to say, we have been coming ever

since and we joined about 5 years ago.

Karen and I have been married almost eighteen years and have two chil-

dren, Harrison (12) and Cecilia (aka Celia, 6). We both graduated from

Virginia Tech, and you will always notice a maroon and orange theme in our family! Before mov-

ing to Greensboro, we lived in Charlotte, Waco, TX, and Durham for my job as an Assistant Plant

Manager with Oakwood Homes. I am now currently employed as a Project Manager for Seager

Waterproofing, a Greensboro-based company.

Since joining St. Francis, I have tried to be very active. There are not many weekends in the year

in which you will not see me at the service. I joined the usher team shortly after joining St. Francis

and I enjoy attending the Adult Forums each Sunday. This year I have served on the Property

Committee and a Parish Discernment Committee for Ryan Mails. My commitment to the church

also extends out of the building grounds...I founded the St. Francis Softball team and Karen and I

also look forward to our St. Francis dinner group which meets almost monthly.

With yours and God’s blessing I would like to continue contributing to our church community

with a seat on the vestry.

My wife Anita and I have been members at St. Francis for the past two

years and have enjoyed our experiences with a great group of vibrant pa-

rishioners. This church community welcomed us with open arms from the

start and has encouraged us to participate in a variety of activities. I’ve

enjoyed attending Friar’s meetings and have been on the Stewardship

Committee for the past two years. Our son Evan was a member of the 2012

confirmation class and has been active in the youth group and attended his

first mission trip.

I was raised as an Episcopalian in suburban Philadelphia. I attended Buck-

nell University for my undergraduate studies, Ohio State for dental school,

and the University of North Carolina for a residency in periodontics. After

residency, I opened a practice in Greensboro and have been at the same location for 22 years.

Professionally, I have been president of the Guilford County Dental Society and the North Caro-

lina Society of Periodontists. I have been a member of the Guilford Rotary Club for 17 years and

have served on the Board of Directors. Personally, I’ve enjoyed coaching Evan’s baseball and

basketball teams over the years. Our family enjoys hiking and skiing when we get the chance.

I am honored to be considered for a vestry position and will do everything in my power to contrib-

ute to this fine church community.

The vestry approved the removal of two diseased trees from the memorial garden area. This

action will prevent further plant disease and/or damage and will enhance safety for guests in the

memorial garden.

Parishioners are invited to help keep our campus beautiful during an all-parish workday on Sat-

urday, November 3rd from 9 am to 2 pm. Even lending a hand for a short time period will be

greatly appreciated and rewarded with a tasty breakfast and/or lunch.

Those needing to use the stove in the parish hall kitchen should arrange for facilities manager

Mike Taylor to turn it on and off. This new commercial gas stove differs from home equipment,

so Mike’s expert touch will keep us cooking safely.

The Parish Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, November 18th at 5:30 pm in the parish

hall. Dinner and childcare will be provided. The clergy and vestry will share 2012 accomplish-

ments and 2013 plans. Four vestrypersons will be elected.

I am Susan Gaylord Tysinger, have been married to Larry Tysinger for 38

years, and raised both of my children at St. Francis. Leigh and Ty were

both baptized here. Leigh and son-in-law Dave were married here, grand-

sons Luke and Carter were baptized here (with Number Three following

soon!), and they are members of St. Francis. Children and grandchildren

all live in town.

I graduated from UNCG and taught fourth grade for nine years before the

birth of my children. I then became very involved in community volunteer

work, particularly in my children’s schools and St. Francis. Most of my

volunteer work now is at St. Francis and at Page High School, with my

largest time commitment presently being the Page Alumni and Friends

Association.

St. Francis has given me so many opportunities to serve God and its people since I have been

here. I have taught Sunday School; been Christian Education Director; served on the vestry (twice

– once as Junior Warden); worked on the Book Sale; taken meals to folks; helped with receptions;

organized events; started the Prayer Shawl ministry; taught Bible School; helped with Children’s

Chapel; been on the Day School Board; served on the Stewardship and Outreach Committees; and

taken part in various other committees and ministries of the church. Some have been more chal-

lenging than others, but I can say that I have truly enjoyed everything I have done at St. Francis.

I grew up in the Methodist church. At the invitation from friends, I ended up at St. Francis. I truly

liked the service, I loved the people who attended St. Francis, and the rector at the time really

“spoke” to me. So I started coming to St. Francis. This rector was Roland Jones. In fact, I am sure

that he is the main reason I became so involved in ministries at St. Francis. I remember the day

over thirty years that he called me into his office and asked me if I would be the Christian Educa-

tion director, a volunteer position. I told him I knew nothing about doing that, and he told me I

did, that I was a teacher and a believer in God and Jesus’ teachings.

The reason I shared this personal story is that I know there are many Franciscans who have so

much to give, in terms of time and talents. As a returning vestry person, I will work to engage

more Franciscans in at least one of the many ministries we have at St. Francis. (Oops! That

sounds like a political promise!) Personal involvement helps our church as a whole while it helps

each individual person grow in God’s love.

A comparison of the nine months ending in September of 2012 and2011 is below:

We are nine months into the year and have begun the stretch run to the end of

the year. What the “numbers” reveal are some interesting facts. Broadly

stated, total revenues are ahead of budget by more than 8% and expenses are

about 3% under budget, two good ingredients.

Now, the specifics: “Current year pledges” are $25K ahead of budget. Parish-

ioners’ keeping their pledges current is a principal reason, but in addition, an-

other factor may be paying pledges ahead. The annual budget also assumed

shrinkage (uncollected) pledges of about 3%. That shrinkage factor was based

on historical data; it appears that the percent was too high and consequently the

church benefitted. The second contributing item has been “non-pledge contri-

butions.” The category includes new church members and some parishioners who regularly con-

tribute, but don’t necessarily “pledge” as such. There is some positive gain here in the amount of

$8K through nine months.

Currently, expenses are 3% below budget, or as noted above, slightly less than $15K. There are

no significant unexplained expenses currently. There will be an additional cost for the unplanned

HVAC project, but with careful stewardship of our resources this should not seriously affect the

finances.

As of the October Vestry meeting, the Day School had 73 students; the budget assumed an average

for the school year of 78. That will pose an additional challenge for the Day School staff over the

coming months to raise the current level to offset the current shortage. The reduced number of

students could have an adverse affect on the finances.

Budgeting for the 2013 year begins soon. Please keep those pledges coming in. May you enjoy

the blessings of this Thanksgiving season with family and loved ones. Plan now to attend the

church’s Annual Meeting is scheduled for November 18 at 5:30pm.

In God’s Peace.

The Youth Group would like to thank all those who made

the Boo Bash such a wonderful success! Youth, parents,

children--thank you all! We had a great crowd attending,

with some fantastic and creative costumes. We had legos,

saints, the Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters, Scooby-

Doo, superheroes, princesses, zombies, television person-

alities, and even an alligator, just to name a few!

I hope that everyone enjoyed the games, like the 'Go Fish-

ing' game, the 'Bean Bag Toss,' the 'Cupcake Walk,' and so

many more. In addition, the face painting seemed to be a

huge hit, as well as the cookie cake and cupcakes! The

youth certainly had a great time holding this event for the

rest of the parish, and it was a joy to see so many children

and parents having fun! We look forward to hosting this

event again next year, and we wish you all a Happy Hal-

loween!

Blessings,

Amanda

The Greensboro CROP walk and the Urban Ministry Food Drive are two of the

many ways the members of St. Francis participate in outreach projects.

The Food Drive that was recently held for the food bank at Urban Ministry was

a huge success. Wow. Just got a report that 89,610 pounds of food was col-

lected and they are thrilled. St. Francis was a contributor collecting 1058

pounds. They were so appreciative of the time our parishioners spent Saturday ,

October 6 collecting food at the Harris Teeter at Westridge Shopping Center.

A big thank you to all of those folks. Thanks also to the people who have been

bringing food to the church office. Working together as a community will feed

many people.

St. Francis had 18 walkers and two dogs who joined thousands of others on a beautiful Sunday

afternoon in downtown Greensboro for the 32th annual CROP walk. Thank you to all who walked

and/or donated and for your support.

This years Greater Greensboro Crop Walk raised over $230,000 to help

fight hunger in Greensboro and round the world. Potter’s House serves a hot

meal to 500-600 people each day and received 25% of our local funds and

the other 75% goes to Church World Services to meet human needs and fos-

ter self-reliance in over 80 countries. Since the first walk in 1981, Greens-

boro has raised over $4.65 million to fight hunger.
