My Dear Friends,

It is only natural that Christmas excites us. The decorations seem to go up earlier & earlier. Because many of us live a long way away from other members of our family we need to buy gifts some way in advance of December 25th posting them in the hope that they will arrive at their destination before Xmas Day. Some of us manage to fit in a visit to deliver gifts in person… So to entice us to buy our presents shops are decorated in September… Meanwhile schools that close for the holidays before Xmas Day stage Nativity Plays & put on Carol Concerts while children are still captive in their class rooms.

Funnily enough, however, the Church is not really supposed to celebrate Christmas until Christmas Day itself.

It is rather like the old fashioned mother who will hide gifts in peculiar places until children come downstairs on Christmas morning & discover them then for the first time. This time of anticipation when the mystery of Christmas remains out of sight is called “Advent”… & yes it does have something to do with the word “adventure” because it derives from the Latin word for “coming” … it is about what is on the way, what’s round the next corner.

Although we don’t like to mention it, the one thing unfortunately we all know that’s round the next corner is death… & so as well as having Advent calendars counting down the days to Christmas Day we have Advent wreaths. What we usually find on coffins & in graveyards we find decorating front doors & festive dinner tables. Rather like customs associated with Hallowe’en these customs help us to make light of death & to take its inevitability in our stride. The beauty of a wreath also reminds us of the circle of life: we are still one with “those whom we love but see no longer”.

This year St Clement’s Church is marking the start of advent with an Advent Wreath Festival. An enormous number of groups & shops have been persuaded to create wreaths which say something about what they are about. Such has been the response that he organizers were worrying the other week about whether there would be room to display them all. (Yes, the answer was, of course… with a bit of creativity!) You can see on our front page a photo of the one members of our Residents Association have made. And above you can see the Church’s own wreath with the fruits associated with St Clement (oranges & lemons!) & the anchor of hope reminding us of why a church by the sea bears the saint’s name: They tried to drown him by tying him to an anchor; but death did not have the last word.

You will be able see all the wreaths on the week-end which straddles the end of November & the beginning of December. The church with its Pisa-like tower will be open from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday & after the 10am service on the Sunday when the exhibition will close with a Songs of Praise service at 3pm. There is no admission charge, refreshments are available & those out exercising their dogs are welcome to bring them in. TROVE ~ THE RESIDENTS’ OWN VIEW OF EVENTS!

It was with sadness we heard of the death earlier this autumn of Sandilands resident Geoffrey Richards. He served as a District Councillor between 1995 & 2007 becoming Vice-Chair in 2007 ~ at a time, it was said, he was the only councillor who could read a balance sheet correctly. He was a wise Quaker with a great sense of fun. He & Barbara celebrated their Diamond Wedding in 2016 [LEFT]; but after Barbara died last year much of the joy drained out of Geoff’s life & sadly it seemed only appropriate he should follow her so swiftly. We will remember him with great fondness.

AN INSPIRATION FOR SUTTON-ON-SEA

At our October meeting Steve Tandy, a volunteer with Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, gave a very informative talk about the work of the service. Helimed 29, which covers our area, is based at RAF Waddington on the edge of Lincoln & is one of 37 in 27 regions. There are over 500 volunteers who support this vital service but fewer than 30 people are employed by it.

Helimed 29 began flying in 1994 but only operated for 4 months due to lack of funds. It was another 10 months before funds were raised for it to start again in 1995. Originally established to cover Lincolnshire, the area was expanded in 1996 to cover Nottinghamshire as well. By 13 May 2019 Helimed 29 had carried out 20,000 missions. Up to 2018 these were day time missions only, but from 2018 night missions were flown on Friday, Saturday &Sunday nights.

The current model of helicopter is equipped to operating theatre standards. The team provide pre hospital emergency care on scene. Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) account for 42% of the missions. Medical emergencies, including cardiac arrests, account for just under 40%.

The crew consist of 2 pilots, 2 paramedics &1 doctor. There is also a Critical Care Car which can be used when it is not possible to fly due to bad weather. Each mission costs £2,500 & the annual costs for running the service is almost £3 million. When night missions are expanded to cover 7 days a week, the costs will increase to £4 million.

It is very important to note that the Service does not receive any government funding, nor national lottery funding. It relies entirely on public donations. A grant has recently been awarded from the Dept of Health and Social Care fund (for capital projects not day to day operational costs) which is going to be used to build a new headquarters. Charity staff, crew & the helicopter will all be based here. It will include a specialist purpose built hanger, engineering & crew training facilities.

Our biggest fun event is The Furlongs Festival. Look out for it on 26 August next summer...the sheep are returning!

Our main project is to raise money to gradually replace the beach huts on the promenade. This last summer we had just three...we plan to have more. An article later in this magazine reports on our recent fund raising success… & the letter below is one of many saying how much the huts are appreciated.

We have a family photograph of my Father as a small boy with his family taken in Sutton from the early 1930s. I have brought all my children & grandchildren to Sutton every year since the 1980’s & we still come every year. The beach, the beach hut, the paddling pool, the other amenities, Waldo’s, Bennett’s, the shops along with the people all play a part ~ Long may it remain so! For my grandchildren visiting Sutton-on-Sea is mandatory & they look forward to it every Year. It is such a special place & we cannot wait for 2020.

On my recent holiday in Sutton this August l was lucky enough to get one of the SOS Residents Beach Huts a real must for me as l bring my grandchildren every year & the beach hut is central to our stay (I have already booked for next year with Joyce).

On talking to other member of the SOS Residents Association they asked me to contact you as my family has a long association with Sutton going back 100 years plus. My Family surname is Stanley & my Grandfather visited Sutton as part of his area of the country immediately after the First World War. Subsequently many members of the family have visited & stayed in Sutton since be it Hotels or Guest Houses. My Grandfather stayed in the Beach Hotel on business & then the family began staying in various privately hired houses or bungalows.

The week end leading up to Remembrance Sunday was marked this year by a stunning display in Sutton-on-Sea Methodist Church.

One could not help being incredibly impressed by the hours of work by many members of our community brought together to create a spectacular tribute to those who served & protected our country, many of them making the ultimate sacrifice laying down their lives.

He is pictured here in his Chelsea Pensioner uniform with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall & a patriotic schoolboy Conor Kitching at a reception & tea party for the "Poetry Together" initiative at Eaton Square Upper School where its pupils were joined by others from Knightsbridge School.

The project aims to help old & young people appreciate poetry & aid memory & the Duchess contributed to the occasion with her own recitation of Belloc’s “Matilda Told Such Dreadful Lies…” saying that if 7 year olds read out poems those in their 70s should too! “Hear, hear!” Roy must have murmured. for he has just brought out his own book of poetry now available in our Library.

OUR MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING

For the last two years we have held our Macmillan Coffee morning outside our beach huts on the seafront… but without electricity this year we availed ourselves of the hospitality extended to us by the Beach Bar: Just as well as it turned out for the rain was unremitting. Damp but undeterred off into the deluge went Jean Moss (LEFT) rounding up customers… The result? A Full House!

Community Lincs is an independent Lincolnshire charity working to sustain & improve the quality of life for individuals & communities across the county.

“Everybody needs good neighbours…”

WHAT DO YOU NEED? WHAT COULD YOU DO?

What is a Good Neighbour Scheme and how does it work? A Good Neighbour Scheme is a voluntary group run by local residents who recognise the value in having ‘good neighbours’, particularly where public transport & other local services can be limited & where family may not live close by. Each volunteer decides what sort of help they are able to offer, how much, & when. They do not undertake jobs best left to qualified professionals. They do not replace the services provided by Adult Social Care or other professional care agencies. Nor should they be seen as a free or cheap way to do skilled tasks that require the use of qualified trades people. They don’t do tasks that require certified qualification such as electrical, gas or plumbing work….but they can help with things like

✪ dog walking & caring for pets during holiday or illness

✪ errands & shopping

✪ filling in forms, writing letters, reading & help to use computers & the internet

✪ light gardening work

✪ giving lifts to a GP surgery, clinic, hospital, Day Centre, other appointments

✪ household tasks including tuning televisions, changing light bulbs & smoke alarms

✪ moving furniture, taking down & hanging curtains & pictures

Anyone who needs extra help can ring the group’s telephone number. Calls are answered by a volunteer phone-handler, who matches the request for assistance with an available volunteer. If you think you might be able to offer some time as a volunteer, the amount of time is entirely up to you ~ even a couple of hours a month helps! Volunteers agree when they can be available & they are encouraged to offer their services only for help that they feel happy, willing & confident to carry out. All volunteers are fully insured for extra peace of mind & are checked (with the requisite charges paid for them) by the Disclosure & Barring Service

~ formerly Criminal Records Bureau or CRB. All volunteers involved in the scheme are issued with identity badges. All expenses are reimbursed: those, for example, giving people occasional lifts in their own car can normally claim the rate allowed by HMRC to compensate the volunteer driver for fuel, wear & tear.

Here’s an exciting new initiative from Charlotte Elson who is working with a team to engage the young people of our area in shaping our community’s future.

Sutton does not have a Lighthouse to guide our shipping… but it does now have this project to guide our young people…. & to help them shine a light upon our way.

One of the first initiatives of the project is a Book Quest (an avowedly “novel” idea! It involves the hiding of books (that many of our community have already donated) in zipped up folders for children to find, read, & then to hide again! Such was the success of the venture that almost all the hidden books were found & taken away to read after only a few days. We hope to hear more of this project’s plans as we enter 2020 & we wish them luck in their imaginative enterprises.

The Prospectus for the fund which allocated £25 million to “Mablethorpe” was issued at the beginning of November & made it clear that the ELDC will be expected to put forward for consideration a plan that includes the whole of this Town Council parish ~ i.e. Sutton-on-Sea as well. The immediate way to pass on your idea of how this money should be spent is to visit the Facebook MY TOWN site, scroll down until you reach the photo of Mablethorpe & add your comments there.

It had been hoped to print in this issue of TROVE the initial proposals for the Foreshore which are now with ELDC. Hopefully they will be displayed in Sutton-on-Sea very soon. The date & time of this event will be given in the weekly “WHAT’S ON” always available at Lammimans & in the Library in Broadway. THE LOUTH CHORAL SOCIETY

will open their new season with a performance of the magnificent J S Bach Mass in B Minor. It will take place in St. James’s Church on Sunday 24th November at 7-30pm.: a bit of a special event for not only will it be the first time the Society has performed this work since March 1985 but also it will be the first time that our choir, & probably any other choir in Lincolnshire, will have performed the work with period instruments, those of Musica Donum Dei. We congratulate the Group for their IN BLOOM success & thank them for all their hard work. They write for TROVE: We would like to say “THANK YOU” for the support given us his year. We do appreciate it. Without it we cannot achieve our aim of “keeping Sutton-on-Sea colourful” or enter the RHS In Bloom competition. With your help this year we achieved a silver 162 points which is 5 points more than last year and only 8 points off the

still elusive Gold status. & silver gilt.

Plans for next year’s contest are already underway & once more we would appreciate knitted or crocheted flowers & leaves to decorate various areas of the village. Any type will do. Something to do during the winter! For patterns & wool pop to see Crafty Knitters at the Library on the second & fourth Friday of the month between 1.30 & 3.30 or ring Kim Hoey 441 254.

The 2019 calendar has been very successful so we are planning on repeating it next year for 2021. So please bear this in mind during the Autumn & Winter in particular, as fewer photos are submitted for these seasons. Details of how to enter will be available early next year.

[ABOVE] Thank you to Robert Howell (& Charlie driving the fork-lift)! It is part of the terms of our use of the prom set by the Environment Agency that the huts must be removed between November & March. We thank Blakemore & Son Ltd for the temporary use of their car park & Sam Borthwick of the Beach Café for the loan of his parking spaces. Sid Dennis is lending us a free of charge skip so at one point we hope to remove the sand on which one of the huts had to be perched. While these huts are here we intend also to complete their painting ready for the next season. Any volunteers?

And by next summer we now will be able to commission further huts from our local builder Thompsons. This is due to one very generous gift of £4,000 plus £9,331.99 from the Co-op Local Good Causes initiative: a gift to be presented at the Mablethorpe Co-op at 2pm on Saturday 23rd November. We thank to everyone who donated prizes for our recent Tombola in the Co-op entrance hall which raised an additional £82.50. It was a cold but enjoyable day which, due to the brilliant display by Pat Newman, raised not only money but interest. Standing in front of it here is our Chair Adrian & Secretary Kim. [BELOW]
