OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark
The church year ends today. Next week, we begin anew with Advent and preparing for the fulfillment of salvation, the two comings of Jesus, the Christ. Recycling doesn’t truly capture what faith-living needs to be. Recycling simply reproduces the same product in other forms. Faith-living is an openness and sincerity of heart, mind and soul to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. This is an on-going and ever growing and deepening of ourselves in fulfilling our calling as daughters and sons of God. This truth challenges our tendency to find a comfort level where we are secure. Faith draws us to finding our true selves in relationships of love and peace. This truth challenges our tendency to find a comfort level where we are secure. Faith draws us to finding our true selves in relationships of love and peace. None of this happens without our willing participation. In relies on a constant trust in a loving God. That’s what the readings tell us. Ezekial (1st reading) speaks to a shattered people living in exile and fear. The message: “God will look after and tend My sheep.” This promise is renewed and fulfilled when Jesus presents Himself as the Good Shepherd, a title we cherish. Paul (2nd reading) reminds us of how this happens. The resurrection of Jesus brings life to all the dead. Death is the last enemy and Jesus’ victory over death is our joy! We tend to hear and believe this but not the rest of what it means and requires. The Gospel leaves us no room for excuses, alibis, self-righteous justifications or absolving one’s self from participation in the work God calls us to do. We are familiar with the Last Judgment Gospel text (Matthew). In faith terms, it calls us to build the kingdom. In communal terms, it calls us to seek the common good of all in whichever society or nation we live in. There are no exceptions though we humans easily seek them by asking, “who are these least brothers and sisters” God refers to? The human barriers which divide us (prejudice, intolerance, bigotry, discrimination, indifference, complacency, arrogance and self-righteousness, all expressions of selfishness) which each one of us contributes to, is unavoidably clear in this scene of Judgment. We hail Christ, our King, when we live His truth of love and justice. Forgiveness and reconciliation, generosity and compassion, peace and unity. It is our calling.
