GREEN ROOM AT THE BEDFORD

PLAYHOUSEThe expansive 6-million-dollar plan to save and reinvent the playhouse was spearheaded by a passionate groundswell of community supporters and donors. The project was brought to the finish line by the generosity of legendary music producer Clive Davis, now the namesake for the Clive Davis Arts Center within the Bedford Playhouse. NYC&G enlisted Brittany Bromley Interiors and RC Torre Construction to transform the 176 square-foot blank space into a hidden gem within the Playhouse. The luxurious VIP Tasting & Green Room will host intimate wine tastings and exclusive events.

Q HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN ‘LOOK’?A I would describe my designs as traditional but with a modern sensibility. We will often use a classical silhouette but render it in a performance fabric with an updated color or material.

Q DO YOU HAVE A DESIGN RULE THAT YOU LOVE TO BREAK?A I love the look of high-gloss paint - even when the woodwork or the wall underneath it is not in perfect condition, I love to see the brushstrokes and the interesting permutations that the gloss brings out in the surface texture.

Q WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST, BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE DESIGN WORLD?A Hands down my beautiful mother - she has impeccable taste, wonderful manners, and is genuinely kind right to her very core.

Q WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN THE RE-DESIGN OF THE PLAYHOUSE?A As a Bedford resident, I have been aware of the amazing campaign that brought the Bedford Playhouse to fruition. The vision, the dedication, and the execution have all done so much to bring our community together, and I’m very grateful to have played a small part in what I am sure will be a large part of our town’s future.

Q WHERE DID YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM FOR THE DESIGN OF THE NYC&G TASTING & GREEN ROOM?A We were inspired by the concept of a VIP tasting room that felt more like a library - moody, dark, and elegant. Instead of a classic dark brown or navy high-gloss cabinetry, we’ve reimagined the traditional library feel with mercury glass, leather, brass, marble, feathers, green tortoiseshell wallpaper and high-gloss deep green millwork.

Q HOW DID THE PLAYHOUSE ITSELF INFORM YOUR DESIGN CHOICES, BOTH IN FORM AND FUNCTION?A One of the wonderful things about the cinema is that it can transport you to almost any time or place, and the room that we have created is similarly unique. It is easy to imagine that one has stumbled into a particularly well-appointed pub in Mayfair or an old Hollywood speakeasy during prohibition as opposed to the being in the quaint historic environs of Bedford Village!

JWH DESIGN & CABINETRY WAS FOUNDED BY JENNIFER HOWARD IN 1996, in Rye, New York. A business degree in marketing, a natural ability for design and architecture, and first-hand experience in residential construction became the foundation of her business model. Over the years, she’s worked on projects ranging from multi-unit condominium projects to multi-million

dollar custom homes. Westchester and Fairfield counties were the initial geographic range for her projects and her custom cabinetry designs and renovations have transformed hundreds of ordinary houses into stunning homes, many of which have been featured in local house tours. Destination projects in the Hamptons, Jersey Shore, Charleston, and San Francisco have

resulted in exposure of JWH Custom Cabinetry in national publications.

Howard and the JWH Team offer creative space planning solutions, honest and unbiased advice, and they work interactively with clients to achieve their goals. The JWH Interior Design Team expertly coordinates the finishing components, including countertops, stone/tile, hardware, plumbing and electrical fixtures to create a cohesive result, reflecting the personal style of each client within their investment parameters.

The JWH Construction Management Team handles the installation of JWH Custom Cabinetry, which is made in their own Millshop in central Pennsylvania. As a licensed general contractor in New York and Connecticut, the team is also able to provide full design/build services for renovations or new home construction, streamlining the process from start to finish.

JWH has been a member of National Kitchen and Bath Association since 2000, and received seven of the Best of Houzz Awards for outstanding design and service since 2013.

Howard lives in Rye, New York with her husband of 30 years, five children, and one grandson. Moving 26 times after designing and renovating their own homes, she knows first-hand the importance of efficient design, careful planning, realistic budgeting and timely execution.

THE TAILORED HOME IS A DESIGN AND furniture business with shops in Greenwich and Westport Connecticut. Headed by designers Jhon Ortiz and Scott Falciglia, the growing business manufactures its own designs at their studio in Norwalk, Connecticut. Their business strategy is different. A look at their backgrounds explains why.

Ortiz, head designer and studio lead, began working with textiles and design in the early 2000’s in Connecticut. Over the years he sold furniture, managed a textiles shop and began putting together what would eventually be his own design studio staffed with talented local artisans. It was the beginning of The Tailored Home. Ortiz had just begun plans for expanding his business when he met Falciglia.

Falciglia, designer and business lead, met Ortiz in 2011 when Falciglia was still working in finance and employee engagement. He began helping Ortiz on nights and weekends, learning the business along the way. The Pepper to Ortiz’s Ironman, Falciglia balances Ortiz’s artistic steadfastness with project management support and a fresh design perspective.

Together they form a dynamic leadership. Falciglia is inspired by what he sees as humanity’s current rebirth, which brings him joy and is reflected in his designs. Jhon is most definable by his resoluteness. He’s admirably purposeful. And his resolve is to steer people away from throwaway consumerism; he makes designs worth keeping for their quality, beauty and purpose. Ortiz’s expansive travels plus experience living on three continents have revealed to him much of what we’re capable as expressive beings. The two spark when designing and the results have disrupted the local industry. The Tailored Home is stretching the bounds of color and era in furniture and design.

Jhon Ortiz and partner Scott Falciglia volunteered to build the saddle-colored banquette in NYC&G’s VIP Tasting &

Green Room. Designed by Brittany Bromley, the piece was custom-sized to offer wall-to-wall seating. “We appreciate

that live entertainment is making a comeback. The playhouse in my town closed when I was a kid” says Falciglia,

from northern Connecticut. “Plus we enjoyed working with Brittany who is as grounded as she is talented” says Ortiz.

Q WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN THE RE-DESIGN OF THE PLAYHOUSE?A Our company has been involved with many commercial and upscale residential alterations in close proximity to the Playhouse for more than 25 years. A few of our recent clients who were excited about the project kinda nudged us to get involved as they said it would be a good fit.

Q WHAT WERE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU WERE MET WITH?A Some of our challenges were getting all of the new mechanical ductwork, piping and electrical into all of the areas where the design was staying as close to original as possible while staying on a strict budget and timeframe. These areas are the ticket, upper, and lower lobby, men’s and ladies bathrooms. Other challenges included becoming flexible to move fast as more funding pushed the project along and have the subcontractors adjust and work in tight spaces at the same time.

Q WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST, BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE INDUSTRY?A My Grandfather was an electrician by trade however built many carpentry-related projects for both my mother and her sister on our homes throughout my entire childhood. Projects ranging from built-in bookcases to full-scale additions. I would hang around with him somewhat helping after school on occasion. My family and private life on our small farm are what keeps me going these days.

Q WHAT WAS YOUR JUMPING OFF POINT?A I always was interested in construction and prior to graduation of high school I was approached by a construction company with a job. I had worked on their farm as a kid bailing hay, helping with their cattle including taking them to the county fair. After graduation I went straight to work.

Q WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN FEATURES WITHIN THE SPACE? A The space is appealing as you can hide away in comfort watch a movie or have a meeting in a room with warm colors and enjoy snacks, and a wide range of refreshments without leaving the room. Full kitchen along with extended sofa make it work.
