BIKE TO NATUREwith NATURAL RETREATS

Get ready to get ‘bike to nature’ with Natural Retreats. We provide incredible places to stay and unrivalled experiences in stunning loca-tions across Europe and the USA. All of our Re-treats are ideal for cyclists – offering diverse and sometimes challenging terrain, beautiful scen-ery, unrivalled personal service and luxurious accommodation, providing the ultimate base from which to explore.

As a company, cycling is at the heart of what we do. Most of our employees are avid bike fans, participating in iconic events such as the Etape du Dales and Etape du Cymru – hear first-hand accounts of their experiences later on.

The majority of our locations are bike-friend-ly, with lots of storage space, including boot rooms and bike hooks, and even free bikes to hire for all the family at select UK locations. For Natural Retreats, making the outdoors accessi-ble to people of all ages or ability, is key.

In the UK, our locations include three in the Scottish Highlands; John O’Groats, Tulloch and Cairngorm Mountain; the Yorkshire Dales a mile outside of the National Park, Llŷn Peninsu-la in North Wales and three Cornish delights, Trewhiddle in South Cornwall, Fistral Beach in Newquay and Rock & Estuary in North Cornwall.

John O’Groats is well known amongst cyclists for the iconic 894 mile journey from Land’s End, commonly known as JOGLE or LEJOG. Thou-sands participate in this gruelling event each year, and Natural Retreats are also a partner of End to Enders, the club set up to recognise the challenge. You can read more about an End to Enders membership later on in the magazine. John O’Groats is well worth spending some time at, offering stunning cycling routes (our fa-vourite is the route to Dunnet Head – the true most northerly point in mainland Britain!) and easy access via ferry to the Orkney Islands.

Tulloch in the West Highlands offers access to Fort William and the Cairngorms National Park, and is just 11 miles from the Fort William Moun-tain Biking World Cup held every June. Should you wish to hire your bike, this can be done from Laggan, about a 20 minute drive east of Tulloch.

Cairngorm Mountain Resort is our latest desti-nation, a diverse snowsports resort in the winter and a natural playground for hikers and bikers in the summer. We offer exhilarating guided mountain-biking trips from the top of Cairn-gorm Mountain right down into Aviemore – an unforgettable experience that you can read more about later in the magazine on page 20. There are endless cycling routes within the Cairngorms National Park, including the well-known Old Logging Way, which takes you from Aviemore up to Glenmore and is a purpose built off-road trail for walkers and mountain bikers. This trail is a bit of a gradual climb up to Glen-more and great fun on the way back down!

With the iconic 2014 Tour de France coming to Yorkshire, the county needs no introduc-tion, and you can read more about the fantas-tic cycling on offer over the next few pages. Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, just a stone’s throw from the Snowdonia National Park, offers some of the most exciting terrain in the UK, and Cornwall is renowned for beautiful trails, chal-lenging routes, coastal charm and favourable climate.

We hope you’ll enjoy reading about our desti-nations, including a feature on Natural Retreats Playa Blanca in Lanzarote – a lively lunar land-scape perfect for road cycling. We have cher-ry-picked our favourite routes in and around our locations, which you can download as GPX files from our website, and we have some really inter-esting interviews for you to cast your eye over. Enjoy!

YORKSHIRE DALESby NATURAL RETREATS

With rugged moors and soft rolling dales, Yorkshire serves up helpings of English countryside at its most iconic. Add in pretty stone hamlets, historic market towns, imposing castles, walk-ing trails and cosy pubs, and you have a county that delivers a wealth of holi-day pleasures.

Natural Retreats Yorkshire Dales is situated in a stunning location, envel-oped within fifty-four acres of pristine Swaledale countryside. Tucked into the hills, with panoramic views, the lodges are perfect for a relaxing and peaceful country escape, yet are only a short walk from the idyllic market town of Richmond.

This dramatic landscape provides the perfect setting for the world’s biggest bike race – The Tour de France - start-ing in Yorkshire on 5th and 6th July 2014. It will be the first time Le Tour has visited the north of England hav-ing previously only made visits to the south coast and the capital.

With this spectacular event on every-body’s mind, cycling in Yorkshire is now bigger than ever before, with an abundance of published information. The Yorkshire Dales National Park, long a favourite with cyclists, has benefitted from an improved cycling infrastruc-ture to help make your cycling stay a great one. Set in the heart of the Dales, Natural Retreats is perfectly placed to explore the world-class local routes, or even try your hand at the nearby Étape du Dales itself – see page 10 for our first-hand account of this thrilling ride. This year, Natural Retreats celebrates its tenth birthday, so we thought it timely to have a double celebration. Yorkshire Dales was our first Retreat, and we can’t think of a better location to park your bike than these wonderful eco-lodges.

Over the coming pages we guide you through this incredible region and all our Retreat has to offer. So, what are you waiting for? On yer bike!

Our favourite cycling routes in and around…

THE YORKSHIRE DALES The Yorkshire Dales is one of the finest landscapes in the country, just perfect for excursions by bike. There are many lovely villages and towns to explore along the way, where you get the chance to have a break and discover some of the fascinating history of the area. Our Natural Retreats lodges are perfectly located in the heart of the Dales, where you can retrace the nearby routes of the Tour de France Grand Départ, and be fully justified in stopping for a slab of cake or a pint of locally brewed beer.

ROUTE ONE Richmond Dales Double Loop 31 miles/50km A nice double loop around Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, taking in the best the Dales have to offer, passing through woodland and riverside. Enjoy gentle climbs from Richmond to Reeth, heading to the Punch Bowl for some great views over the hills. Head back up those steep climbs returning to Reeth, with some really rewarding (and peaceful) countryside views.

LOCAL TIPS

ROUTE THREE Aske & Easby Loop 22 miles/35kmA nice easy, mixed route of road and off-road bits. The route starts by heading left out of Natural Retreats on the Hurgill Road, carrying on through stunning woodland areas, which can get fast and rocky near the end, until field crossings dominate the route. Heading towards Richmond, look out for the historical remains of Easby Abbey. A particular highlight is a section following the old train line, which then terminates at Richmond’s food and culture hotspot, The Station. See page 14 for what brewed delights are in store for you there.

ROUTE TWO Richmond Cyclo Sportive 98 miles/158kmThe legendary ride that takes you through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. As spectacularly beautiful as it is brutally tough, this popular route is a wonderful tour of the Dales with some of the hardest climbs around, like Fleet Moss and Park Rash. Certainly a challenging ride but one for the bucket list! With so many café stops in Richmond, Tan Hill, Kirkby Stephen, Hawes, Kettlewell, Leyburn – you can enjoy the delights of Wensleydale around each turn. You’ll be burning it off anyway.

David and team went to Yorkshire to try out the world-class routes before they got too busy for the Grand Départ. As he describes, the Etape du Dales is one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences out there. It’s difficult to know what to expect on the Etape du Dales, the event organisers tell you that you must respect the seriousness of the challenge and be well prepared not only for the terrain but also for physical and mental endurance. No pressure then! Two of the Natural Retreats team started preparing for the ride five months in advance in early January, 20 miles a day for five days a week. Riding base miles in winter weather conditions doesn’t make fun cycling, but it has to be done if they you want to finish the challenge. The Etape du Dales is an extremely difficult 112 mile ride in the Yorkshire Dales with over 3,600 metres of ascent and tricky technical descending. Many of the roads and iconic steep climbs feature in the 2014 Tour de France and require an excellent level of fitness. Riders traverse a landscape shaped by violent forces over millions of years that has given rise to beautiful limestone cliffs, waterfalls, deep valleys and high plateaux moorland, all within short distances of each other. It might rain, it might snow, the weather is the least of our problems! The day starts at Grassington. The route takes us along the River Wharfe which is nice and undulating until reaching the first tough ascent of the day – Fleet Moss followed by a quick 45 mph descent from the top into the valley below. What follows, is a

series of deep valleys and high plateaux culminating in the half way point at the Tan Hill pub dubbed by the owners as the Inn on Top of the World, sitting at 1,732 feet it is the highest pub in Great Britain. No time for a pint though, off the bike as quick as we can, water, feed and back on before the legs get too used to resting. Warming up again, the second half of the route starts with a technical descent and then a long climb out of the valley to the top of Ing Hill crossing the boundary into Cumbria. At this point you think you have broken the back of the ride at 70 miles and feel truly elated. However just out of the Moorcock Inn feed station, a left hand turn puts you in the path of Garsdale, a 25% climb over 8 miles which crushes any spirit you had left! With not much energy left in the tank the last 20 miles seemed a blur, the legs seemed to be on auto pilot and I was almost about to mutter the words “I’m not sure how much more of this I can take” when a sign “8 miles to Grassington” appeared. Suddenly energised and focused again we powered along the main road that takes you back to the start and beep beep over the electronic counter, it’s over, never again, until next year that is. Natural Retreats Yorkshire Dales is located just an hour’s drive from Grassington, and is the perfect base for your cycling training in the lead up to the Etape du Dales. To celebrate the Grand Départ, Natural Retreats is offering 15% off cycling breaks at our Yorkshire Dales Retreat for stays in 2014/15. See reverse page of the magazine for more info.

One for the road…

CRAFTING A WINNING BREW Nicole Williams Cycling Retreats Contributor

BEST OF YORKSHIRE SHOWCASE

With all eyes on Yorkshire this summer for the Grand Départ, it is hard to resist sampling more than just the world class cycling routes on offer. Famed for everything from its tea to puddings, England’s largest county really comes out on top with its selection of craft brewed ales and beers, especially when enjoyed in one of the many traditional pubs throughout the region. Their flavour, strength and character size up well to the legend of the area. Nearby to Natural Retreats Yorkshire Dales, the lovely town of Richmond is home to The Station, a remarkable development housed in what used to be, well, the former train station! Where tracks and carriages once stood is now a collection of cultural and independent businesses, ranging from a cinema, restaurant, vintage store, bakery, cheese shop, art gallery and (for me, the gem in the crown) Richmond Brewing Company.

The Station (which will aptly be named La Gare during the Grand Départ) is ideally located at the end of one of our recommended cycle routes of the area. Heading right off Love Lane, cross the River Swale over to the old railway line (see page 8 for more information and route download link), which leads you directly

to your destination. We recommend a food refuel at Seasons, a big and airy sunlit cafe situated in the heart of the station, buzzing with visitors, families and cyclists alike. Richmond Brewing Company is tucked away to the east of the station building – where we imagine the trains came roaring in. A tour of this brewery is a must for anyone serious about their beer. Indeed, the Brewery’s manager, Sarah Rice, details their production techniques with an energy and gusto that is sure to convert even the most hardened grape enthusiast. We interviewed Sarah to talk more about the ‘Tour de France’ effect on Yorkshire, their wonderful beers, and what you can expect from a visit to their little brewery. NR: We’ve been hearing so much about le Tour coming to Yorkshire, what has the atmosphere been like? Have you been enjoying the ‘French effect’? SR: There seems to be a massive sense of excitement, and pride, not just in the towns and villages it is coming through, but across the county as far as I have seen. For example, the Tour isn’t

Page 15: Cycling Retreats

CYCLING RETREATS 15

coming through Richmond, but every shop window has something related to it displayed. Fields and gardens everywhere have been planted yellow and everyone is bringing out their Sunday best so we can show Yorkshire off to the world. The publicity has been amazing, and some of the films and advertisements featuring the beautiful countryside through which the cyclists will be travelling even got me a bit choked up. We’re all really proud that the county has been chosen to host this bit of a massive world event. As for enjoying it, so far I haven’t had much time! But on the day, we’ve got a bit of a party back at The Station and I’m hoping to get half an hour to grab some barbeque and a pint and enjoy a bit of what will hopefully be a sunny summer afternoon!

NR: Is Richmond Brewing Company creating anything special to commemorate the event? SR: We are indeed! Like many of the local breweries, we have developed a special ale to commemorate the Grand Départ Yorkshire. It’s called Sacré Bleu (a bit of cheeky French for fun!).For the non-geeks, it’s a triple-hopped rich golden 5% ale. For those like me that want to know a bit more, it’s been brewed with a combination of Pale Malt, Amber Malt and Maize, all locally sourced, so it has a rich honey golden colour and a smooth full-bodied flavour. We used three varieties of British hops, chosen for the spicy fragrant notes; Pilgrim, Fuggle and Old Kent Goldings, so it’s got a real hoppy kick to it at the end, but not too much. This is my first creative brew as the Manager for the Brewery so I am really really excited to see how it goes down with everyone. I’ve tried it and I think it’s pretty awesome, different from the other commemorative beers that have made locally, which is very much what I wanted. It is only available on cask unfortunately, however it should be at a few pubs in the region, including the Bolton Arms in Leyburn, who are in the fantastic position of being right on the route. We will also be selling a limited number of ten litre Polypins (bag in a box) of Sacré Bleu for anyone coming to the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling at Harewood House.

NR: We will be at Harewood House too! We look forward to getting some Sacré Bleu...! Returning to Richmond, what makes a visit to your brewery at The Station a great stopover for a cycle tour of the Dales? SR: I think the brewery and The Station are great attractions for any visitors, but they are ideal for cyclists. We are situated right on the old railway (shockingly for an old train station...) which has been turned into a bridle path, as many of the old closed branch lines across the country have. But the path runs right alongside the river and is a stunning ride that can be done by the whole family (not too many hill climbs). In fact, for people who just want an afternoon of cycling, the swimming pool just across the car park from the station hire bikes out in the summer, so it’s perfect for families. We have good facilities for cyclists, such as bike racks, and of course, when you get back, you can enjoy our beautiful outdoor beer garden.

Of course, what could be better refreshment after a hard day of Yorkshire Hill Climbs than a nice cold beer down by the river?

NR: Which of your brews would you recommend for after a long bike ride? Any local food pairings that are top notch? SR: I think one of the lighter ones would suit best, such as the Station Ale (available in bottles and on cask) or the Pale Ale (seasonal and cask only). I hope some cyclists will be trying the Sacré Bleu and letting me know what they think; I think the hoppiness makes it pretty refreshing. If the beer is mid-ride, I would maybe suggest the Swale as it’s only 3.8%, so no-one should be wobbling off too much after one of those! In terms of food matching, I highly recommend pork scratchings, because they are delicious, and the best ones are made in Yorkshire! Or for a full meal, the light beers go well with anything savoury really, but especially fish and chips (both chip shops in the Market square are very good), or for the Swale, a nice fresh made burger from the Hildyard Arms in Colburn, who have at least two of our beers on tap at most times.

NR: What, in your opinion, will be the legacy of the Tour de France for Richmond and the Yorkshire Dales? Well, we’ve already seen a massive increase in the number of cyclists in the area and the facilities for cyclists have popped up all over the place. Bunk barns with cycle storage, cycling shops and specialist repair businesses are already feeling the benefit of the Grand Départ being held here this year. In the long term, I think it will set Yorkshire, and Richmond, up as a great place for cyclists to visit (not that it isn’t already!). It’s such a varied county that we have nice family rides that you can do with the kids alongside some of the most challenging hill climbs in the UK. We’ve already been hearing rumours of an annual ‘Tour of Yorkshire’ competition that will hopefully attract world class competitors for the next five years at least, which can only build on the great reputation we’re already getting for cycling. For pure spectators coming up here in July, I hope they get chance to have a look at something other than the race while they are here. There is so much to see and do in the Dales it would be a shame to just come for the race and leave without trying anything else (especially the beer!), and once they do, I am sure they will be back for more. And even for those staying at home to watch the Grand Départ on television, I can’t imagine anyone would see those sweeping panoramic views and not want to come and see them in person! I can promise, even in high definition, technology doesn’t do them justice.

Richmond Brewing Co. is located in The Station Brewery, which is easily reached from our Yorkshire Dales Retreat, and is also on Route 3 of our Yorkshire Dales recommended cycling routes.

Tours can be arranged in advance by contacting Sarah Rice on 01748 828266 or [email protected].

CAIRNGORM MOUNTAIN

THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE NATURAL RETREATS PORTFOLIO

HAS US REACHING NEW HEIGHTS FOR THE SUMMER

Welcome to Cairngorm Mountain, the newest addition to the Natural Retreats European portfolio.

Over the coming years, we’re aiming to elevate this incredible destination (even higher!) and create a Natural Retreats ex-perience like no other. Cairngorm Moun-tain has some of the most remarkable natural landscapes in the world, located in one of the world’s most beautiful coun-tries. It provides the ultimate playground for mountain bikers, triathletes, skiers, snowboarders hikers and sightseeing tourists.

The wonderful funicular railway gets snowsports enthusiasts to the heart of the action in winter, and in summer, pro-vides visitors with an easy and enjoyable route into the heart of some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery. On the route to the top, wonderful views of the National Park captivate whilst sightings of rare flo-ra and fauna demonstrate the incredible diversity of this unique part of Scotland. It really is the year-round mountain, with activity and adventure attractions for all seasons. What’s more, it’s even home to the UK’s highest restaurant, perfect for post-expedition refuelling.

As we ourselves have experienced over the last few months (see over-leaf for a first-hand account), it’s a fantastic destination for cyclists. Cairngorm Mountain has long been used as a base for touring routes and expedi-tions, but stands out in its own right as a world-class location for mountain biking.

Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a total beginner, Cairngorm Mountain is an amazing destination to embark on an unforgettable guided mountain bik-ing activity. Offering a choice of guided descents you can ride through spectac-ular moorland, past sparkling burns and along remarkable forest trails.

Fully qualified guides help you get the most out of your guided activity, with a wealth of local trail knowledge and ex-perience. Learn about the history of the mountain, its diverse flora and fauna, and even the best drinking spots all along the way. One of our favourite experienc-es, the Ridge to River MTB guided trip, ends in Aviemore after a scenic journey through the Old Logging Paths route.

The surrounding Cairngorms Nation-al Park is also a prime cycling destina-tion in itself. The roads aren’t busy and the National Cycle Network crosses al-most the entire area, including some 64km of off road routes. At the base of Cairngorm, the town of Aviemore is linked by several of these routes – giv-ing you every opportunity to combine as many experiences with your visit to Cairngorm Mountain as possible. Local accommodation providers have been awarded the ‘Visit Scotland Cy-clists Welcome Scheme’ which means they cater well for your needs on hol-iday with your bike. Cycle paths sur-round Aviemore, and you can even cycle up to Cairngorm Mountain itself. See you at the top!

Page 20: Cycling Retreats

20 CYCLING RETREATS

There is still lingering adrenaline in me from the first moments of the almost 3000ft moutain-bike descent down Cairngorm Mountain last May. As a holiday adventure, it really is like nothing else out there – the highest mountain bike experience of its kind in the UK, Cairngorm Mountain offers visitors like you and I the opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of this unique mountain bike descent. If you’re armed with cycle know-how and a can-do attitude, little more is stopping you from joining in this activity. Everything’s provided – I was paired with a mountain bike, shin guards, gloves and a helmet, alongside the announcement ‘Prepare to get muddy!’. And what’s more, you still get to see all of the resort areas, using the funicular for uplift, you can take in the views before things get that bit more downhill.

All of this was steered by our two fantastic guides, Amanda and Jonno, a pair of entertaining, wise and energetic instructors who have no qualms about suggesting you hurtle down a ravine, or politely yelling should your legs start to resemble spaghetti. I did have some nerves: I was the only person in our group of seven who hadn’t cycled off-road before – though I made sure to remind everyone the bumps and double decker buses of the streets of Manchester can be more than a little bit treacherous.

Our initial confidence-building practice run taught me to turn my body into a spring, and before I knew it all my usual biking muscles were as good as put into long-term storage. From above, at the Ptarmigan Top Station, we began to descend the ridge. With regular stops down the mountain, turns that looked like vertical drops I somehow survived; boulders and streams, snow piste diggers and hillwalkers were all surmounted by my amazing bike. As I grew braver, so did my speed; glancing over

my shoulder I couldn’t believe I’d made it down in one piece, and took a few moments to think back to my bike at home, humble with its parcel shelf. Once finished with the hill track, we headed off-road to Aviemore. This included a particularly rapid road section on both new and old (with added humps), before joining Loch Morlich. It’s here the expanse of Cairngorm mountain can be seen peeking through the natural Highlands woodlands, with the route you’ve just taken vivid enough to inspire disbelief. This part of the journey is much less of a descent and instead more of a leisurely ride, with stunning views and many corners where you can line up with other riders for a chat or just an equally thrilled glance across the path.

Before we knew it, it had been four hours, and in that, I had just had one of the best experiences of my life, one that I would recommend without hesitation – especially to anyone who has, like me, been sitting on the same city bike for many a year. The knowledge, instruction and downright passion displayed by our guides completed the package – backstories, histories, nature tip and of course the calming knowledge that if you have turned your body into more of a spring than you were expecting, they’ll be there to pick up the pieces (should there be any!).

The ride ended by Aviemore train station, passing by The Bridge Inn, which is well worth a post-ride visit to. Get set to tell your tales over a pint or two of local Cairngorm ales – and then get planning your next descent.

The Guided Ridge to River Descent operates May to October at 1pm every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Prices are £35 adults, £25 children. See our website for more info and further biking experiences: naturalretreats.com/uk/cairngormmountain/guided-mountain-biking

THE CAIRNGORMS Beyond Cairngorm Mountain, and the guided mountain biking you can revel in there, the region boasts some great routes around the Cairngorms National Park. Expect stunning scenery, diverse wildlife and ancient woodlands with more than a few stories to tell. In and around Aviemore, most accommodation choices in the Cairngorms National Park area are linked by cycle routes and there are a host of bicycle hire options throughout the region, for those who may want to try out something a little different than what’s at home.

ROUTE THREELoch an Eilein to Loch Morlich, via the Old Logging Trail 22 miles/35kmThe perfect route for a fun bit of downhill riding, with a few technical bits thrown in to keep you on your toes! The route winds its way through Rothiemurchus Forest from Loch an Eilein, almost straight down to Loch Morlich – both lochs are some of the most beautiful in the Cairngorms and this is definitely a must-do ride for mountain bikers with a little bit of experience under their belt. On the return, The Old Logging Trail is a route so fantastic, you wont want to get off it.

ROUTE TWO Speyside Way: Aviemore to Boat of Garten 16 miles/26kmLinking Aviemore to Boat of Garten, this section of the Speyside Way is completely off-road but the terrain is very manageable, and mostly flat – so would be good for family groups as well, with an enjoyable length. The trail runs through beds of heather, and has 360 degree views of the surrounding hills – it really is a treat to ride. Time it right, and you might even be lucky enough to catch the steam train chugging along the Strathspey Railway.

JOHN O’GROATS, CAITHNESS John O’Groats – for many, it’s the end (or start) of a cycling experience, but for us it’s both. Our favourite cycling routes are along this spectacular coastline, and many take in the iconic places that make this area famous – the most northerly point on the mainland UK being one of many. It’s also part of the North Sea Cycle Route – the world’s longest signed international circuit.

GET THE ROUTES naturalretreats.com/uk/john-ogroats/cycling

ROUTE ONE JOG – Thurso – Dunnet Head circular 28 miles/45km This takes us to another icon – Dunnet Head, the most northerly point in the UK mainland. Taking the A836 from John O’Groats to Dunnet Head, the spectacular Pentland Firth is on your right, with excellent views of the Orkney islands of Stroma and Hoy. You will also pass the Castle of Mey, the late Queen Mother’s official home. Stay on the coast road to enjoy the beauty of the Pentland Firth, return the same way or via the A836.

LOCAL TIPS

ROUTE THREE The Orkney Islands 13 miles/21kmThe Orkney Islands are just a 45 minute ferry from John O’Groats - and bicycles go free! Take the 9am and return at 7pm and you’ll have a full and rewarding day on these stunning islands. The ferry docks at Burwick on South Ronaldsay, and our route takes us across the gentle hills of South Ronaldsey to St Margaret’s Hope, an ideal spot for lunch, then on to the Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, a 26 mile round trip. If you’ve time take the side trips to the Tomb of the Eagles or the beautiful bay at Quindry.

ROUTE TWO E2E – JOG to Wick 17 miles/27kmE2E – JoG to WickThe classic last (or first) leg of the End to End takes you 16 miles along a straight-forward A99 road, taking in some incredible landscape along the way. Going south, after an initial 315ft climb it’s more or less plain sailing to Wick. After 10 miles it’s worth taking a break at the atmospheric Loch of Wester. a Special Area of Conservation. Wick, a former Viking settlement, is home to the old Pulteney distillery (don’t have too many drams!) and many historic attractions.

CYCLING RETREATS 25

Sarah Pritchard recently started as the Coordinator for the End to Enders Club, a new initiative creating recognition for those who take part in the journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats, commonly known as the LEJOG, JOGLE, or the End to End Challenge. Part of Sarah’s role is to greet those completing the challenge, and is based at Natural Retreats JOG. We asked Sarah to welcome us to this exclusive club…

As a keen outdoor enthusiast with growing interest for endurance challenges, there’s nothing more motivating than meeting the hundreds of End to Enders that arrive or depart from John O’Groats each week. From the lycra-professionals to the larger men in leather, from the man who walked backwards, to the couple on a steamroller, the diversity of those undertaking the End to End challenge is extremely inspiring. After just two weeks being up here in the Highlands I’ve met people who have cycled, walked, kayaked, ran and tandem-tri-cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats or vice versa. I thought I’d seen it all until the Beeline Britain Expedition team rocked up – the first ever team to cycle, walk and kayak from Land’s End in a straight line, including a climb to the Cairngorm summit. It’s safe to say that in JOG, you’ve never seen it all.

The possibilities of the End to End challenge are endless and it’s fantastic to hear about new ways to tackle the journey and the monumental effort people put in to raise money for charity. With the End to End membership, the achievements of these thousands of End to Enders do not go unrecognised. The club offers a central hub for all End to Enders to share stories, compare times, and motivate like-minded individuals to take the journey of a lifetime. The electronic verification system installed at Lands End and John O’Groats will track the End to Enders official journey times, and members will receive support before, during and after their journey as well as a t-shirt, medal and certificate on completion, and support with publicity.

Being up here in JOG, witnessing smiles and tears of those setting off or completing the End to End, has been a huge eye-opener to the efforts these people have undergone. I have confidence that the End to End club will be successful in triggering acknowledgement for one of the toughest endurance challenges in the UK, and I for one can’t wait to see the club develop into a thriving core for inspirational people.

Find out more about the club on www.endtoenders.com or contact Sarah, End to End Coordinator on [email protected]

During your stay, Lanzarote has so much to offer, making it perfect for a family trip, or group cycling getaways. From your Natural Retreats holiday accommodation, you can explore the many beaches and towns, wildlife and adventure parks, take a boat trip or go snorkelling. From these climbs, the views are just astounding.

On Saturday morning in the island’s capital, Arrecife, head by bike to the farmers’ market. Local growers sell wonderful seasonal vegetables, unbelievably grown in this arid ground, bread, goat’s cheese, dried fish, wine and sauces. Try and be there for noon when the bells of St Gines are rung by hand, building up to an amazing crescendo followed by clapping all around. Afterwards pedal along the seafront to the inlet of El Charco for some tapas, before a sunny afternoon ride back to your villa. Have a cooling swim then sit back, grab some sangria, and plan your next jaunt around the island.

LLYN PENINSULA, NORTH WALES The idyllic Llŷn Peninsula is truly an area of outstanding natural beauty, which stretches out about fifty kilometres into the Irish Sea from the north west of Wales. The area retains a unique Welsh charm and character, with a welcome from shore to shore. The peninsula is famed for a unique micro climate, brought from the Gulf Stream, resulting in warmer sea temperatures and agreable weather throughout the year. A great day out on peaceful lanes and heath land tracks, visiting quiet coves, sandy beaches and places of interest is sure to add up to a cycling retreat like no other.

GET THE ROUTES naturalretreats.com/uk/llyn-peninsula/cycling

ROUTE ONE The Llŷn Loop 74 miles/120km This tour of the peninsula combines quiet country lanes with only small amounts of on-road action. Heading anticlockwise takes you to the foot of the Snowdon range then along Llŷn’s remote northern coast to drop you into Aberdaron. The climb out lifts you high above Hell’s Mouth (Porth Neigwl) for the descent into Pwllheli.

LOCAL TIPS

ROUTE TWO Snowdon Sojourn 54 miles/87kmSince the awe-inspiring Snowdon range fringes the Llŷn’s eastern edge it would be a shame not to take advantage of the fine riding on offer in this spectacular part of Britain. Expect challenging climbs in exchange for some very rewarding vistas of the area. The last bit of the climb to Rhyd Ddu might take it out of you a bit but the descent into Beddgelert is lovely. Why not stop and read the story of Prince Llywelyn and his faithful hound, then it’s round the foot of the mountains before a mostly downhill run back to the start.

ROUTE THREE Nefyn Heaven 29 miles/47kmHead coast to coast across the hills of the Peninsula on this incredible mid-length route. The hills of Nefyn may lack height but aren’t short of character and are a joy to climb through this excursion. For some history along the way, Garn Boduan has the remains of an interesting iron age fort, and on a clear day you can see the Welsh coast all the way out to Pembrokeshire. You can also extend the ride to include a visit to the impressive coastline around Morfa Nefyn, a good place for spotting seals in their natural habitat.

CYCLING RETREATS 33

All eyes may be on Yorkshire this summer, yet Wales still packs a punch with some world class cycling challenges. We asked Ewan to recount a recent outing by the Natural Retreats team as they took on the Etape Cymru. Having gone through the pain, glory and yet more pain of the Etape du Dales earlier in the year and developed a strange addiction for long distance bike events, three of us from the Natural Retreats UK office signed up for the Etape Cymru as a late summer challenge. Ominously, it was described as an ‘epic lung-busting, leg-aching, end of season closed road sportive providing one of the most challenging closed-road bike tests in the UK’ and certainly lived up to its billing.

The day began in the dark with an early drive from Natural Retreats to Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. In the days leading up to the event, we’d been training on the routes spanning the Llŷn Peninsula. On arrival to the racecourse the usual pre-race preparation panic began and then before you knew it we were massing with hundreds of other cyclists ready for the 7am start. There was a really superb atmosphere and great banter from the assembled group, and then we were off. Usual tactics based around “let’s pace ourselves” were completely thrown out the window and overtaken by the excitement of the day. We were soon moving through the gears and racing with the group along the roads ready for the first of the hill climbs.

Disaster at the 7 mile mark with a puncture but a wheel change that a formula one team would have been proud of got us back on track in no time. The 88 mile route through North Wales was truly breathtaking with some spectacular scenery as we passed through the Clwydian Range, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Dee Valley which is the scenic gateway of North Wales and one of the UK’s most beautiful landscapes. Definitely worth a revisit under less pressured circumstances! The well planned circuit took in some challenging climbs, including the legendary Horseshoe Pass, which incorporated a timed King of the Mountains challenge, and the effort to the top was rewarded with a long speedy descent.

The organisation and marshalling throughout the day were outstanding and the much needed feeding stations en-route were a site for sore eyes – whoever thought of Welsh rarebit as recovery nutrition is a genius. With the knowledge of the finish close by the final section of the ride was a race down from the hills back to Bangor-on-Dee and a great welcome from a patient crowd. What an event. I’m definitely signing up again this year.

The Etape Cymru starts off in Wrexham, a two hour drive from Natural Retreats Llŷn Peninsula. With an abundance of routes around the Retreat (see page 30 for more information), it’s the perfect training ground.

Taking on the North Wales challenge…
