It is hard to believe that November is already slipping away. Where does the time go?As a club, we have gotten off to a great start with lots of boating activities this fall.

• Mary Moccia & Susan Knust organized a fabulous cruise to the Keys. Even though Mother Nature did not smile on us, most regrouped and drove cars instead of boats. Everyone I have talked with had a great time.

• Whether shopping or browsing, many of our members went to the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show over the weekend.

• Monday, Niles and Jean Kin lead us to Parrot Key for our first fall Lunch Bunch cruise. Seven boats and 63 people enjoyed a wonderful lunch and beautiful afternoon.

There are lots of exciting functions still on the agenda for 2016.

• Our November Boaters’ Night is Thursday the 10th. This is an important meeting because the South Seas cruise will open for sign-up during our social half-hour starting at 5:30 pm. The program will consist of several members telling us about their summer cruising in the northeast. It should be a very interesting evening.

• The yacht club and GH Marina will be hosting our joint Welcome Back & Aboard Cocktail party on Sunday, 13 November from 5 to 7pm.

• The Ehle’s and Callaway’s have a great cruise planned for Pink Shell next week (November 16 – 18) with bocce games in the morning and group parties at night.

• As usual, the Commodore’s Ball will be held the first Saturday in December (3rd). It is always a fun evening and I hope everyone can attend.

• Tom and Elise Starr are organizing our last Lunch Bunch of the year. On 15 December, we will cruise to Ft. Myers Yacht Basin for lunch at the Twisted Vine.

The first regular dinner meeting of the Yacht Club was well attended. The red, white, and blue theme was perfect for an election night. A big screen TV kept the crowd informed of election results. In addition to the US Presidential election, the Yacht Club membership voted for the slate of officers for 2017.

December 3rd is the annual Commodore’s Ball which will be an elegant black tie optional evening.  There will be a special dinner menu and live band.  Seating will be limited so please sign up on line or by calling the Club.

Attention Facebook users!Women's Book Club by Joan Kaplan

The Gulf Harbour Book Club met on November 2 to discuss Circling the Sun by Paula McLain.

The discussion was led by Louise Fox who did the research on the author as well as the review and also did an excellent job.  The book is historical fiction and very closely follows the life of the author.  McLain’s fame came from The Paris Wife which she based on Hemingway’s first marriage to Hadley Richardson.

The main character, Beryl Markham, was left by her mother at 4 years old in Kenya to live with her father.  He raised and bred thoroughbred horses and had little time for Beryl.  She inherited his passion for this line of work and was raised by tribal people. He eventually ran out of money and married her off at 17 years of age to a neighbor who was verbally abusive.  Her father moved away and Beryl was left on her own to fend for herself.

Words to describe her by all in attendance (16 people), were: a survivor, resilient, independent,   She epitomized what today’s woman who wants to do her own thing would be like.  And to think she was born in 1902!

She had 2 1/2 years of education and yet earned as the first woman her race trainer’s license at the age of 18.  Being a woman and beautiful did not help her cause and she made bad decisions regarding her relationships.  Yet she managed to survive with people who surrounded her who wanted to help her including her tribal friends.

She took flying lessons and was most peaceful flying solo.  She was the first woman to cross the Atlantic from England to Brunswick.

There were many characters in the book and they were well developed.  We had an interesting discussion on their personalities.  The scenery was so well portrayed, you felt you were in Kenya.

The title of the book was captured in this sentence.  “When he fell out of the sky, everything he was and would yet do vanished.  And he’d taken my heart with him, too.  How would I get it back again?”

We hope this intrigues you to read the book.  The Gulf Harbour Book Club meets the first Wednesday of every month at 1PM in the Boardroom.  The December book is A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman.  The January book is The Gilded Years by Karin Tanabe.  February is a special discussion leader, Peter Karofsky, who authored And the Oaks Heard Them All.  He is a Member of Gulf Harbour and this will be an RSVP event.  More to follow on this discussion.  All Gulf Harbour Members are welcome to attend.

In Memoriam

Jodi Martin – Past Commodore.  Jodi was a person you could never say ‘No’ too, but why would you when her intentions were always in the right place.  While at Gulf Harbour, Jodi was given the unique honor of serving as the First Woman Commodore of the Yacht Club, her warm hospitality was extended to new friends who quickly became her life-long friends.  Always planning, organizing parties, yachting trips, air travel and cruises to different parts of the world gave her much happiness, treasured experiences, memories, and more cherished friends.  Anyone who knew Jodi received an everlasting gift.

Dale Yemm – Dale will always be remembered as someone who was soft spoken but when called upon was always willing to help.  He was a top notch photographer and took pictures at many of our Dinner Meetings, events and pitched in whenever asked.  He loved boating; he and Donna joined the GHYC on many different boating excursions.  Dale and his family had sailed the BVI’s many times and he especially enjoyed the GHYC trip to the BVI’s in 2013.  After the trip he created a DVD with lots of pictures & Caribbean music for us all to enjoy for many years.

Dale Yemm

Jodi Martin(Joan Waund)

The families of both Dale & Jodi Invite you to their "Celebration of Life"
