RESTAURANT Up to 600 people marched in Duleek against the proposed water charges on 1 Novem- ber. The turnout was mas- sive, and even the organiser, Thomas Lynch, was taken aback by the overwhelming local support for the nation- wide day of action. ‘I am astonished by the groundswell against water charges,’ he said. ‘Having dropped fliers into hundreds of houses in the area I have heard horrendous stories of financial situations and I feel that people really cannot af- ford this latest charge. I also campaigned against the Household Charge and Property Tax and found that people were afraid to protest then. Now they are so stretched that they can’t pay. Of course, there are some who won’t pay on principle too.’ The protest against the water charges in Duleek was inde- pendently organised and is not aligned with any political party. The protest coincided with over 90 other protests being held around the coun- try, with many joining the Drogheda parade afterwards. A number of elected represen- tatives also attended, includ- ing party members and inde- pendents. ‘I have no confidence whatso- ever in Irish water and their ability to provide a well run water and sewage service,’ said Cllr Sharon Keogan. ‘It was great to see so many peo- ple take to the streets, and hopefully more will join this unjust water tax protest on 10 December in Dublin. I cer- tainly won’t be registering!’ Speakers included Duleek na- tive and member of Drogheda Against The Water Charges, Anthony Connor. Trim man Tony Rochford, who spent 25 days on hunger strike outside the Dail in protest against the property tax, also addressed the gathering.. Another day of action will take place on Saturday 29 No- vember from 8am-8pm on the Village Green, Duleek. It’s the first Protest & Petition Day against water charges to be held in Ireland. Supporters are asked to drop in for what- ever length of time they can and sign the petition. F Duleek water protestors
