I just love fall. Every-thing about this time of year energizes me to knit, knit and knit. It is a time to begin new projects from wonderful yarns found at fall fiber fests or our local yarn shops. It is a feeling of satisfaction knowing that something I am knitting in wool, al-paca or a luxurious blend can be worn in the very

near future because the weather is getting colder. I like to tailgate in cool weather so I can wear my sweaters, socks, scarves and hats. It is a time to show off our knitting and make others wish they could knit. I realized the reason I don’t have a winter garden is because I am focused on knitting. I find excuses such as “working” at the Chesapeake Waterways Festival as a front to rest, relaxation and knitting. It is a sickness (Fall Fever) and I know I am not the only one afflicted. By Chris Goudeau Guild member Carrollyn Cox told us about the Winter Shelter Program for the Homeless. Local churches are par-ticipating. Each church picks a week in which they feed and house the homeless, 70 people each week. Carrollyn’s church will do this the week before Christmas. At the end of the week, another church will pick up those duties. Carrollyn would like to give each person (men and women) they feed a scarf when they leave at the end of the week. So, we are asking that you knit a scarf, or two, and bring them to the December meeting. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. I’ve started one with some charity yarn that I received at one of our Guild meetings. I cast on 17 stitches on a #17 nee-

dle and am just doing a garter stitch (knit both sides). It’s going quickly. As you know, this year during our December holiday meeting we will be having a baby shower for Newborns in Need. Instead of our usual member gift exchange, we ask that you knit/crochet a baby item. You can also donate diapers as well. Don’t forget you still have time to knit your Caps for Kids. We still collect for them, too. Here’s a recap of the local organizations asking for knitted/crocheted items. Pet blankets – Virginia Beach animal shelters (must be at least 14” square) Baby blankets – Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society 8” squares – Hugs from the Heart (hospice patients) Hats and scarves for Veterans – American Red Cross Caps/blankets for kids – St. Mary’s Home, Project Linus, Newborns in Need

Please remember those in need when you are looking for a project to start. Hats, blankets and scarves are all projects you can make with your leftover yarns. I will bring in charity yarn for you each month as long as my supplies last.

Bring your items to be donated locally to the next meeting and we’ll see that they are distributed. Remember to sign the Charity Knitting log each month when you attend our meetings or email me at [email protected] As always, thank you to all who take the time to knit/crochet for charity.

S U P E R R A F F L E R A I S E S $ 2 0 6By Denise Call And the winner is ... (drum roll, please) ... Cindy Call! October was the final month for our super raffle of an extra-, extra-large basket of yarn (worth more than $500 retail) in memory of our friend and Guild member Joanne Fischer. A big thank-you to everyone for purchasing tickets. In the last newsletter, we mentioned that we hoped to reach $200 for this basket of yarn and this month, I am happy to announce that we raised $206 toward the Guild education fund. Proceeds will go toward education expenses for the March 2013 knitting retreat. Way to go everyone, and Cindy, we can't wait to see what you make! If anyone is capable of knitting up that basket of goodies in this lifetime, it's you!

By Linda Johnson I love making lists. I love organizing those lists. I was overjoyed when I learned of the app “Out of Milk,” where you list your pantry, shopping lists and to-do lists. So you can imagine how excited I was the other night when Lora Marin mentioned to me that she printed out her Ravelry “Favorites” list to take with her to the Fiber Festival. She said it had all she needed to shop, with a picture of the project and the weight and amount of yarn needed. Once I got home I took a look her “Favorites” list and now know this woman is an organizing genius! In-stead of adding a few tags like “shawl” or “sweater” or my favorite, “free,” she types in the information need to yarn shop for the pattern. For example, the tags for the shawl “Wendell Holmes” are 420, fingering and lace shawl. So Lora can take a quick look at her Favorites list and know that “Wendell Holmes” is a lace shawl that needs at least 420 yards of fingering weight yarn. Now she can sort her Favorites list for projects that are fingering weight and/or shawls and not have to open each pattern to see how much yarn is needed.

Nell Ziroli, of NellKnits, will be at Baa Baa Sheep Saturday, Nov. 3, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Please join us for refreshments and the chance to speak with Nell about her designs and her favorite yarns.  Several of her samples are on display now, so please stop by to see them. As I inventoried Nell's patterns I began making my holiday project list. She has several cowls that are really unique, particularly the Anonima Cowl. Corinth and TILT are fingerless gloves that are perfect for my daughter in Chicago. Many of her projects are trendy enough to satisfy even the most particular teen. Her patterns are available on Ravelry and you can read her blog at knitnellknit.blogspot.com.

Class DescriptionsDesign a Stranded Cowl: Using the two-handed knitting technique for stranded color knitting (some-times called Fair Isle) and a few charts, design your “one-of-a-kind” cowl in fingering weight yarn. We’ll make a sample size in class. Techniques: two-handed stranded knitting, corrugated ribbing, reading charts in the round, inserting your design and maybe a few more. You should know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off.

Design a Shetland Style Shawl: Starting with one stitch, you’ll increase, bind off, pick up. Knit down and knit across to design your one-of-a-kind triangle-shaped shawl using fingering weight yarn. We’ll make a sample size in class. Techniques: knitted bind off, yarnover at beginning of row, suspended bind off, reading charts and maybe a few more. You should know how to knit, purl, yarnover, knit front and back, and knit two together.

Mosaic Knitting Technique: Would you like to add a little color-work to your socks without carrying or stranding colors? Using a simple slip stitch technique or mosaic technique, you can create intricate and beautiful patterns in your socks or anything you knit. Need to be able to knit, purl, and slip a stitch.

Sweet Tomato Sock Heel: Learn to knit the Cat Bordhi sock heel of short rows without wrapping and turning. Must be able to knit in the round using DPN, 2 circulars or Magic Loop and purl.
