TIDEWATER KNITTING GUILD OF VIRGINIA June 2014 A message from our president I want to take this opportunity to bid a fond farewell to Sue Von Ohlsen as she and her husband move back to her hometown near Baltimore so they can be close to and help her parents. Sue is a knitting icon in our community and will be greatly missed. I don’t think there ever was a knitting mistake (no matter how disastrous) that Sue couldn’t fix. I can’t remember a time when I was in her shop that someone didn’t come in with an “emergency” that needed immediate attention which Sue gave or took home so she could spend some time fixing a knitting mistake. Sue taught many of you how to knit, or tricks of the trade, or, more importantly, how to read your knitting and fix your own mistakes without completely ripping out a project. I want to thank Sue for all the support she gave the Guild through her shop, service on the Guild board as the programs coordinator, presenting several programs at our monthly meetings and judging and helping with our first knitting contest. We called on her again to do a couple workshops at our last retreat doing what else: reading your knitting and fixing mistakes. Not only is Sue a Master Knitter and a great teacher, she also is an accomplished artist who works with fiber and beads. A message from our president ! TIDEWATER KNITTING GUILD OF VIRGINIA June 2014

President’s message: Farewell to Sue Von Ohlsen, continued from page 1#probably seen her “Under the Sea” display in her shop, which had beaded, knitted and crocheted items, but you may not have known that some of her beadwork pieces were on display at the Smithsonian. Sue also had several felted pieces, as well as that clever knitting needle clock, on display in her shop. She was commissioned by the City of Chesapeake to make a large blue heron done completely in beads. Hopefully, you had the chance to see it in her shop before it went on display in a small garden near the Hillcrest Wal-Mart in Chesapeake. If not, it is worth a trip to see.! !! Did I mention that Sue would be living in Baltimore, which is practically next door to the Maryland Sheep and Wool venue? Sounds like a road trip to me. I don’t like to ever say goodbye, but rather best wishes and see you later, Sue.!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Debbie Henderson

May 2014 TKGV meeting minutes The president opened the May 2014 meeting at 7:10 pm by welcoming two visitors and two new members, and extending birthday wishes to Guild members celebrating May birthdays.! The April 2014 meeting minutes were approved. ! The treasurer reported a balance of $4,397.92. There are a few outstanding minor expenses from the Retreat. The treasurer reported that the bank is now charging a monthly $20 fee. Several local banks have free checking accounts for nonprofits. The treasurer will be looking into moving the account. ! Please remember to fill in the charity gift log when you knit gifts for charity. ! Yarn Shop news: Baa Baa Sheep: There will be five new yarns coming in June; among them is Sassy Skein, a DK and worsted weight 100% cotton great for kids. There will also be a trunk show. June and July are bringing two new yarn lines to Baa Baa Sheep, which means exciting project ideas and a greater variety of fibers. Sassy Skeins arrived this week and will be featured in a trunk show from June 13-28. Sassy Skeins is the brainchild of two women from southern Florida who envisioned fun, easy care clothing for children. The 100% mercerized cotton comes in two weights, DK and worsted, and has vibrant, saturated colors that bring to mind the Caribbean. It's perfect for the children's designs that are the focus of their line. More than 30 patterns in sizes 18 months to 10 years are available along with the colorful hues they call for. Each pattern includes any buttons, ribbons, or

insignia needed to complete the project. The trunk show promises to delight and get you thinking about gift ideas. Cheryl's class schedule for June includes Learn to Knit Socks from the cuff down on Tuesdays, June 10, 17 and 24, from 6-8 p.m. On Tuesday, June 3, from 6-7:30 p.m., she'll conduct a workshop on Different Bind-Off Methods. Call the shop at 802-9229 to register. Thank you to the many knitters who contributed items to  Operation Homefront's Star Spangled Baby's baby shower event. We contributed more that 65 baby hats, three blankets, six sweaters and too-numerous-to-count bibs and washcloths. I enjoyed seeing everyone on Saturday, May 31, for the Guild Scavenger Hunt. It was a perfect day for knitting with friends.

On the knitter’s bookshelf: New stitch dictionary teaches multiple ways to make stitches By Roz Klein !Even if you already have a knitting stitch dictionary, you need to consider getting this one. Wendy Bernard's latest book, Up Down, All

Around Stitch Dictionary, is different in that, for each of the more than 150 stitch patterns, she tells you how to knit it flat, in the round, bottom up or top down. !!The patterns include knit and purls, ribs, textured, slipped and fancy, yarn overs and eyelets, cables, lace and colorwork. Bernard

includes 11 patterns for projects including cowls, caps, sweaters and mittens that teach you how to incorporate a pattern of your choice. In addition, there are directions for 16 different edgings. !! The stitch multiple index allows one to pick and substitute patterns in any project. It's ideal for socks, afghans, shawls, scarves, and garments. !! Published by Stewart Tabori & Chang, the book is available for $29.95.!
