As we enter the Thanksgiving season, the phrase Hodu L’Adonai Ki Tov,Ki l’olam hasdo,” really resonates with me. It is an uplifting phrase found oftenin our liturgy, but sung with particular joy in the Hallel service which we sing in

engaging melodies during our festivals and holidays.

But this particular Thanksgiving Season 2012 at Congregation Beth Shalom is somewhatdifferent than other years because of this interesting bridge between our past, present andfuture. I see G-d in all of this. And G-d’s four letter unpronounceable Name: yud-hay-vav-hay, symbolized by Adonai, represents the verb “to be” – in all three tenses. So whenthinking of such an abstract concept of G-d, we think of a Presence who occupies past,

present and future (haya, hoveh, yihiyeh – was, is, will be) simultaneously.

We begin by giving thanks in the past tense: ninety years of past to be specific. It is absolutely mind-boggling to thinkCongregation Beth Shalom is celebrating NINETY years of existence. Back in 1922, when this synagogue was foundedjust two streets to the east, at the corner of Washington and 18th Streets, our country was just closing the gates as 2.4 millionJews, mostly from Eastern Europe and Russia, entered our country. The early builders of the Delaware Jewish communitywanted to create a spiritual meeting place between the pre-existing Orthodoxy and Reform synagogues of Wilmington, andthat is how our synagogue, aligned with Conservative Judaism, came into being.

We will begin our 90th anniversary celebration on Saturday night, November 3, at 5:30pm, with a Minha/Maariv servicein our chapel, giving thanks to G-d for our synagogue leaders Celina and Ron Riebman, Helen and Norman “Sonny”Schutzman, and Ruth Siegel. Our honorees will take the three alliyot at the service. From there, we will enter into theatrium for a gala cocktail reception followed by festivities and dinner in the social hall.

As important as it is to celebrate our past, with Thanksgiving, it is equally important to celebrate our present, and all theblessings we experience, from having enough to eat to having a roof over our heads. Thus, as we have done for many years,we will gather on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving for an Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration. This year we willbegin with a veggie/dairy potluck dinner at 6pm, followed by 7pm services, at Peninsula-McCabe United MethodistChurch, located at the corner of 22nd Street and Baynard Boulevard. Cantor Elisa, along with members of the BethShalom Adult Choir, and I will be among several interfaith presenters. During our celebration, we will be raising funds andresources for Family Promise, our interfaith community’s response to homelessness in Delaware.

We will take our feeling of gratitude in November and project into our future, as we take the joy from our InterfaithThanksgiving Celebration and translate it into substantive social action and Tikkun Olam work in January. Organized byDina Lipschultz, Beth Shalom members will join with congregants from Beth Emeth and six neighborhood churches.Together we will take turns hosting, feeding and entertaining homeless families housed for one-week intervals, three timesper year at Peninsula-McCabe. G-d was, G-d is, and G-d will be. Our gratitude is past, present, and future. Our inspiration by ninety years of past serviceto our community shapes our present interfaith Thanksgiving celebration and informs our future social action initiatives onbehalf of the homeless in our community.

May G-d bless us in every way, may we appreciate all the bounty we have – and from a place of gratitude, may we all beinspired to reach out and help others.

TRULY AMONG FAMILY

For many years, I was a twice a year Jew! You know us… never missed a RoshHashanah or Kol Nidre service, but never saw what the synagogue looked like on aMonday morning. Yet, between the death of my father and the Shabbat requirement

for B’nai Mitzvah students, we started to come to services more. At first a few Fridays, thenadding Saturdays, until you could find us here almost every weekend.

If you attended services on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, you saw my daughter Alex (orAviva to most of you) read Torah. If you were in the Sanctuary, you may have noticed thatAviva’s nerves got the best of her. Yet, if you were in the Family Service, thirty minuteslater, you would have seen her chant her Torah in the relaxed setting of our home portionwith the skill and confidence that she had while practicing

In the sanctuary, I watched Aviva walk up to the Bimah. I was filled with pride and admiration at the courage she showed.This is something I would have found too daunting as a teenager and still find overwhelming as an adult. What I saw nextmoved me in a way that I could never fully explain. When I saw Cantor Elisa walk up, put her arm around Aviva, and guideAviva through her Torah portion, I knew that we were among family and that she cared about our daughter as much as Mikeand I do. As Aviva walked back to her seat, she was still visibly shaken and to watch this congregation wrap their armsaround her with love and support, I knew that we were truly among family!

For those who have been content with merely making an appearance on the High Holy Days, I would implore you toreconsider. In this Shul, we celebrate each other’s successes and we mourn each other’s losses…TOGETHER! So for thisformer twice a year Jew, I would like to encourage anyone looking for a loving, spiritual home to remember that we here atCongregation Beth Shalom are a family!

Everything from our HonorsCommittee to our Ushers Committee, from our hostesses ofthe Sisterhood Break-the-Fast to the architects of ourMen’s Club Sukkah Raising, and from the members of ourAdult Choir to the coordinators of the Book ofRemembrance, audio/visuals, and Israel Bond Appeal;thank you one and all!

OUR CANTORTHANKSGIVING: A JEWISH HOLIDAY

As Thanksgiving approaches, I cannot help but think that this American holiday isquite Jewish in nature. As we know, Sukkot is seen as the most joyous time ofyear, z’man simchateinu, when we celebrate the fall harvest and all that G-d has

given us. We spend a week eating, schmoozing, and possibly even sleeping in our Sukkahto remember the time when the Israelites lived in temporary dwellings after G-d broughtus out of the land of Egypt. While we celebrate in our Sukkah, we are exposed to theelements and are reminded of how lucky we are to have roofs over our heads. Sukkotreminds us of how vulnerable we truly are and, thus, we thank G-d for all that G-d hasprovided us. One of the key features of this holiday is hachnasat orchim, showinghospitality to guests. We invite guests to partake in our many blessings. In my mind,Sukkot has always reminded me a little of Thanksgiving.

Although it is not clear precisely why the Pilgrims decided to celebrate Thanksgiving theway they did, we can only guess that they got the idea from biblical passages

describing the Feast of Booths or Sukkot. Some believe that the Pilgrims, before coming to America, may have madecontact with the Sephardic Jewish community of Holland. In 1492, the Jews were expelled from Spain, and they fled toother parts of Europe and the Middle East, one such place being Holland. The Pilgrims were also expelled from theirhomelands and fled in search of better lives. The Pilgrims eventually came to America in order to be able to practice theirreligion freely. While we do not know very much about the first Thanksgiving, we do know that this fall harvest celebrationoccurred in 1621 and, like our meals on Sukkot, that meal took place outdoors. Just as we invite guests into our Sukkah, thePilgrims invited Native Americans to their first Thanksgiving and we have continued this tradition of welcoming guestsever since.

So, is Thanksgiving Jewish? Both Sukkot and Thanksgiving are joyous holidays in which we are thankful for the abundancein our lives and we invite guests to share in all that we have. I am convinced that whether or not the Pilgrims deliberatelybased Thanksgiving off of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, the holiday reminds us of critical Jewish values.

I am always looking to the liturgy as a guide for my life, and every year around this time, I spend some extra time thinkingabout Jewish texts that thank G-d for all of the beautiful things in our lives. We see examples of this in many prayers, butthe one that always seems to come to mind this time of year is Birchot HaShachar, a series of blessings we recite everymorning. In this passage, we thank G-d for many things in our lives- clothing the naked, lifting up the fallen, etc. Once I amdone reciting these prescribed things that we as Jews are thankful for, I often like to create my own set of verses thankingG-d for all of the personal blessings in my life. Over the next few weeks, I invite you to think about what you are thankfulfor. I wish you a Thanksgiving filled with family, love, and warmth.

FROM OUR EDUCATION DIRECTOR, CANTOR ELISA ABRAMS

Congregation Beth Shalom’s Hebrew School is back on a regular schedule now that all of theChaggim, holidays, are over. Over the last month, students have learned all about the HighHoly Days both in their classrooms and outside. Many of our students attended our family

High Holy Days services and also the main sanctuary services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.Students had the opportunity to walk down to Brandywine Creek to take part in our synagogue-wideTashlich program, where we tossed pieces of bread into the creek symbolizing the tossing away of

our sins. All classes created decorations for CBS’s Sukkah. Hopefully youhad the opportunity to stop by and see it! Students also spent an entire morning learning aboutSukkot at a variety of stations around the synagogue and under the Sukkah. Students shook thelulav and etrog, built edible Sukkot, and played a holiday trivia game. Students are not onlylearning, but are getting hands on experience in their classes!

I am very excited to announce that Confirmation is off to a great start! In order to offer students avariety of exciting courses of study, Rabbi Michael, Dina Lipschultz, and I are teaching threedifferent courses - Israel, Jewish Lifecycle, and Jewish Cooking.- and the classes will be taught incycles of three weeks. By the end of the year, students will have studied these three areas in depth.

Veterans Day was once known as Armistice Day. November 11, 1918, was the last dayof “The War to End All Wars,” World War I. Since our country’s beginning, youngmen and women have been called to arms and many have given their “last full measure

of devotion.” American Jews have served in every conflict of our nation’s history. During theRevolutionary War, one of the first Jewish Americans to give his life was Lt. Colonel SolomonBush, who died in the Battle of the Brandywine. During the Civil War, more than 7,000 Jewsfought for the Union and 3,000 for the Confederates. By World War II, 550,000 Jewish men andwomen served in our armed forces, 39,500 casualties, 11,500 killed in action. Twenty-two Jewsattained senior officer rank, forty- nine thousand battle awards, including 3 CongressionalMedals of Honor: Ben Soloman, Isadore Jachman, and Raymond Zussman. In 1954, followingthe Korean Conflict, the day was renamed as Veterans Day, thus honoring all veterans whoserved. Today over 10,000 Jews serve our country in uniform, and nearly 60 Jewish men and women have been killed inaction in the Global War on Terror.

Join us Friday, November 9, at 8:00pm, as Marty Mand, who served in the U.S. Navy in North Africa, shares hisexperiences of being the only Jew on a military base within a Moslem country. CREATE A JEWISH LEGACY

Imagine what our community would look like in ten ortwenty years, if everyone left us a legacy through abequest in his or her Will. The long-lasting impact on

programs, services, and finances would be invaluable.

A Legacy Committee has been formed to work jointly with theJewish Federation of Delaware’s Jewish Fund for the Future. Thebrand new initiative is called “Create a Jewish Legacy” – a new,concentrated, effort to educate our community on how easy and vitalit is to leave a bequest for our Jewish community.

Charitable bequests are flexible. You can designate a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate oreven the asset to use; it is up to you. Charitable bequests provide lasting legacies, without the risk of outlivingyour assets. Charitable bequests make a real difference, benefitting generations to come.

On Sunday, November 11, Richard Nassau, of the Jewish Federation, will explain the details behind the Create aJewish Legacy program and how together we can build a legacy for our synagogue.

REPAIRING OUR WORLD - TIKKUN OLAM

FAMILY PROMISE: A NEW TIKKUN OLAM PROJECT

There are over 6,000 homeless people throughout a year in Delaware, with almost half of these children.Now Congregation Beth Shalom is joining the other 9th Ward congregations (2 synagogues, 5 churches) aspart of Family Promise of Northern New Castle County. This is an opportunity for CBS members and

friends to be involved in a hands-on, interfaith project to directly benefit homeless families in our community.Families will be housed during three specific weeks in the year at McCabe-Peninsula Church on BaynardBoulevard, and we will support this by shopping, cooking, socializing, staying overnight, and driving duringthese weeks.

You can even involve your children in this project. Wewill ask for volunteers to spend the early evening hourssocializing, eating, and playing with our guest families.

Families will be coming to Peninsula-McCabe theweek of January 6 - 13, 2013.

All volunteers will have to attend one of themandatory training sessions. These sessions will allbe held at Peninsula-McCabe on these dates:

Tuesday, November 6 4:00 to 6:00pmSunday, November 11 6:00 to 8:00pmWednesday, December 5 7:00 to 9:00pm

Family Promise of Northern New Castle County(www.familypromisede.org) helps homeless familieswith children move toward lasting independence byproviding a safe place to eat and sleep, intensive casemanagement, life skills training, support, andencouragement. We do this through a network ofcongregations that host these families directly in theirhouses of worship, staffed by caring volunteers whohave put their faith into action. Each guest andvolunteer is important to us and we are joyful about allof the acts that happen in our midst to restore familiesto stable housing.

Providing some of the following items will be helpful.

Supplies kept at Peninsula-McCabe UMC for hosting: Games, books, toys (age-appropriate) Pack-n-play(s) 2 crib sheets & covers High chair (s) 16 storage bins (sheets, blanket, mattress cover,

½ shower curtain, hand towel & wash cloth)

Items to set up the bedrooms: 16 sets of twin sheets 16 mattress covers (twin size) 8 plastic shower curtains

(1/2 makes a bed protector) 16+ blankets /comforters

(to keep our families warm in the winter time!) 4 small tables 4 table lamps 4 alarm clocks 4 flashlights with batteries 4 waste baskets 4 laundry baskets

Provided to the Day Center Staff to give to families asthey move into the network: 14 sets of towels; A “set” is a big towel, hand

towel and wash cloth (These are provided to eachindividual that enters the Family Promise networkand they get to keep the set when they move out.)

14 pillows (These are given to each individual thatenters the network and the pillow travels with themthrough the network rotation.)

Family Promise provides the initial set of aerobeds(20 with 4 pumps) that will be kept at Peninsula-McCabe.

R abbi Michael and Cantor Elisa of CongregationBeth Shalom will join Rabbi Micah Becker-Kleinof Temple Beth El and Jewish educators and

musicians, from the Greater Philadelphia region for anevening featuring musical performances to the Shabbatliturgy, spiritual kavanot to enhance prayer, solos byCantor Elisa, and some violin by Rabbi Michael. Open toall congregants, this is an opportunity to worship a littlecloser to home for our Beth Shalom congregants living inHockessin, Newark, Bear and Middletown.

The evening will begin at 6:00pm with a salmon/dairyfamily dinner, catered by Boscov's. Reservations for themeal are due by Monday, November 5. Please call theCBS office (302-654-4462) to RSVP. Cost is $13.50 foradults, $7.50 for children.

Services begin at 7:30pm. You are welcome to join in forservices without coming to dinner.

A festive Oneg will follow, featuring delicious dessertsfrom the kitchen of Temple Beth El.

This joint program is an opportunity to build a closerbridge with both synagogues.

REQUIEM FOR 9/11Sunday, November 25

7:00pm - ConcertGrand Opera House, Wilmington, DE

R equiem for 9/11, an inspiring new work fromcomposer Wilson Gault Somers, will premiere onSunday, November 25, 2012 on the main stage of

Wilmington’s historic Grand Opera House. Requiem for9/11 is first and foremost a music composition ofremembrance that ‘honors the triumph of the human spirit’on that fateful day. The music draws inspiration from thetraditional Requiem Mass form, complementing the ancientLatin Mass text with English text taken from OldTestament and Holy Scriptures. Somers, who has beenpraised and celebrated for his previous major work, Massfor the Homeless, explained, “It is a message of hope, amessage of tolerance and of understanding for our ever-changing, vulnerable world.” Requiem for 9/11, which willbe performed by chamber orchestra and chorus, will be thefinale to a program of great American music.

The net proceeds from the premiere of this important newwork will benefit the Flight 93 National Memorial. Thepassengers and crew of Flight 93 will be permanentlyhonored at the site where their final struggle ended in arural field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Their heroismembodies the essence of Requiem for 9/11.
