THE NEWSLETTER OF CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM, WILMINGTON, DELAWARE

HAPPY HANNUKAH!VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR SONGS, PRAYERS, AND MORE!

OUR RABBI

CHANUKAH AND OUR MEMBERSHIPTHE MEANING OF GIVING

I would like to begin with a seasonally appropriate Hebrew word: n-[-n.

If you found this word in a siddur or a Hebrew newspaper, it would be written: N[n.

Whether you spell natan right-to-left, as in Hebrew, or left-to-right, as in English, youhave the same word. The word, natan, is the Hebrew word for giving and it is also apalindrome -- a word that has meaning whether read backward or forward. Giving is likea palindrome in that it has meaning in both directions, benefitting those receiving the giftas well as the gift-giver. Both are linked intimately through the word “giving” - N[n.

Recently, the 2012 Membership Directory was mailed out. Each member listed is a gift toour synagogue. You benefit us with your commitment to be a member. In turn, we hopewe benefit you with religious programming, support, activities and events, that will bring

meaning and importance to you. In paging through the Membership Directory, I felt a spiritual lift when I came to the pagethat listed new members. I literally felt that I was at the dedication ceremony of our mishkan, the biblical sanctuary of our40-year wandering, which forms our Torah texts at Chanukah. And, there before me, were the sacred gifts of the twelvechieftains of the Tribes of Israel. As I do for all of our members, I feel that our new member families are a special gift andit fills me with great pleasure and warmth.

During the month of December, when we think of Chanukah and gift-giving, we find numerous examples in both receivingand in giving back. Within our own synagogue, our Sisterhood is giving the gift of honoring its members during SisterhoodShabbat, while Kitchen Klub members are giving in preparing the luncheon. Men's Club will offer the gift of giving bycooking latkes for our Hebrew School students during their Chanukah celebration. The Gift Shop volunteers are giving theirtime by assisting congregants in their holiday shopping. Our CBS teens are giving to their fellow teens by hosting acommunity-wide "Pa-JEW-Ma" Dance Party. And, the Family Promise program, unites our members in giving us all theopportunity to perform tikkun olam on behalf of the homeless.

In January, I invite all of our members to join Cantor Elisa and me on Friday the 25th, for our New Member Shabbatservice. At that time, we will give each new member a welcome gift of a mezuzah (complete with a kosher scroll). Our giftalso comes with the opportunity for either Cantor Elisa or me to visit, affix your mezuzah, and recite a special blessing overyour home and family. This offer is open to all of our members as our gift to you.

Chag sameach!Rabbi Michael Beals

OUR CANTOR

THE KIPPAH AND THE EGALITARIAN CONGREGATION

Many of us walk into the synagogue and reach for the kippah basket as if it is anatural reflex. It is a custom that has been woven into many of our Jewishlives, so much so that we do it often without even thinking about it. But this is

something that is not second nature for many of the women in our kehillah kedoshah orsacred community.

The Talmud teaches that we wear kippot or head coverings as a reminder that G-d isabove us and is watching our every action. It is there to help us remember to act morallywhen we might be tempted to act otherwise. The Talmud (Shabbat 156b) tells us a storyof a woman who was told by astrologers that her son was fated to be a thief. In order tokeep this from happening, she demanded that her son always keep his head covered, toremind him that G-d is watching his actions. One day, while he was sitting under a tree, his skull cap fell off. He was immediately overwhelmed by a desire to eat a piece of fruitfrom that tree, which did not belong to him. It was at that very moment that he became

aware of the strong effect the kippah had on him.

So, are we commanded to cover our head? In Judaism we wear kippot out of custom rather than Jewish law. The custom isnot even considered a mitzvah and we do not say a blessing when putting one on.

As an egalitarian Conservative congregation, we at Congregation Beth Shalom strive to treat men and women equally inevery way possible. We are thrilled to count both men and women in our minyan and to allow boys and girls to have B’neiMitzvot. Our mara de’atra or halakhic authority, Rabbi Michael, asks that men wear kippot during services and whilestudying Torah. However, women wearing kippot is a relatively modern idea and not all the women at Congregation BethShalom are comfortable with this custom.

As Conservative Jews, we value the idea of “tradition andchange.” Until recently, it was tradition for only men towear kippot; however, times have changed and theConservative movement has embraced egalitarianism inmore recent years. Because this is still such a new concept,Rabbi Michael and I agree that it is important for ourcommunity to approach the topic of women wearing kippotin a gentle and flexible way. Although it might be seen asthe ideal for all men and women to cover their heads,Rabbi Michael and I believe that it is more important thatwe be sensitive to varying levels of comfort and take babysteps to ensure that everyone feels secure with their levelof observance and Jewish practice. This is the sameapproach we take in the Hebrew School. While boys areexpected to wear kippot during tefillah and while studyingTorah, girls are strongly encouraged but not required to.

I often say I believe that each and every one of us is on aJewish journey. As a Jewish woman, I can personally saythat my comfort level with regard to Jewish religiouspractice has changed and developed drastically over theyears. I took small steps and allowed myself to experimentand struggle with our tradition. What made it possible forme to grow on this journey was the nurturing and flexiblenature of the Conservative movement. I invite you all totake baby steps toward exploring new Jewish religiouspractices and, as always, I happily make myself availableto help in any way I can.

SECOND FRIDAY SHABBAT

JEWS, CHINA, AND CHINESE RESTAURANTS:“SO… YOU WANT LOKSHEN OR LO MEIN”

December 25th … mom doesn’t want to cook, made enough latkes and brisket last week to feedan army. Hey! Let’s go to the movies and Chinese food. Looks like Yom Kippur at the RiceBowl, never saw so many synagogue members. So, what’s the deal with Jews and Chinese food?Join us Friday evening, December 14 at 8:00pm as Rabbi Beals shares this fascination withChinese food and a brief History of Jews and China. But for now... a few highlights:

Jews and Judaism in China have had a long history beginning with the Silk Route trade. Jewishsettlers are documented in China as early as the 7th century CE. Relatively isolated communitiesdeveloped through many dynasties, most notably the Kaifeng Jews.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Jewish immigrants from aroundthe world arrived with Western commercial influences, particularly to Hong Kong, Shanghai andHarbin. In the first half of the 20th century, thousands of Jewish refugees escaping from theRussian Revolution and the Holocaust arrived in China.

The contemporary term for Jews in use among Chinese today is Youtairen in Mandarin Chinese. The term Youtai has similar phonetic sound of Yehuda. It has been recorded that the Chinese historically called the JewsTiao jin jiao loosely, "the religion which removes the sinew," probably referring to the Jewish dietary prohibition againsteating the sciatic nerve (from Genesis 32:32).

Synagogues are found in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong today, serving both international Jews and native Jews. In2005, the Israeli embassy in China held their Hanukkah celebrations at the Great Wall of China. As of 2010, it is estimatedthat 2,500 Jews lived in Shanghai and 5000 in Hong Kong.

We thank Ellen and Robert Meyer for the photos of Ohel Moshe Synagogue, Shanghai.Marv Cytron

Rebecca L. Harrison, sister ofRachel and daughter of MaraRaskin and John Harrison, wascalled to the bimah for her BatMitzvah on November 17, 2012.

For her Mitzvah Project,Rebecca volunteered her timeduring the past months workingwith young children teachingthem life-lessons: responsibility,

sharing, taking turns, respect for others, not to lie, andothers which were reinforced in her Torah portion. Shealso worked to empower these children and their sense ofself through physical activities including gymnastics,hoola-hooping, and yoga.

Rebecca truly loves working with children and intends onpursuing a career which affords her the opportunity toinstill future generations with the ability to learn and growboth mentally and physically towards a better and morepeaceful world. An avid gymnast and hoola-hooper,Rebecca also regularly practices yoga and meditation-self-awareness.

Yasher Koach and Mazel Tov to the manyvolunteers and attendees who made our 90th Galacelebration a phenomenal success. Our atrium and

social hall were decorated with festive lights and flowers, while music enhanced the occasion. An overflow of happyfamily and friends filled our synagogue with joyful noise, while Boscov’s servers tended to a busy bar and wovearound the social hall to serve a delicious dinner.

The Gala exceeded our expectations, with a sold-out crowdplus a waiting list! The night of the event, guests filled theatrium, even before the 5:30 minhah service had ended. By6:00, the entire atrium was filled with happy revelers, serenaded by a harpist. Cindy Goldstein and CantorAbrams drew our attention to the balcony, where they led amusical Havdalah service, and then we moved to the socialhall for dinner.

Everyone was awestruck by the social hall, transformed bylighting, feathered arrangements, glass balls, and stunningfloral displays. Lisa Driban, our Vice President of FundRaising, coordinated the décor along with her decoratingcommittee. Our Master of Ceremonies, Michael Sigman, read from letters of congratulations and proclamations, including greetings from our Board President andchairpersons, Governor and Honorary Chair, Jack Markell, and Senator Christopher Coons. Senator Tom Carpergraciously attended and greeted many, during ourreception. Tributes were delivered for each of ourdeserving honorees, Ruth Siegel, Helen and SonnySchutzman, and Celina and Ron Riebman. Each received apersonalized copy of the Commemorative Book and anengraved leaf, to be placed on our new Tree of Life, located in the Chapel. The honoree responded withremarks and dinner followed.

Commemorative Books were distributed to all inattendance. Additional books are reserved in the CBSOffice for the event sponsors and 90th Anniversarycommittee members who were unable to attend. Thesebooks will be held until December 5, when the remainingCommemorative Books will become available on a first-come, first-served basis for congregants who have notreceived a copy. Due to the expense of printing, a limitednumber of books are available. A video keepsakefeaturing images from our history and photos from the90th Celebration, is available at cost of $18, for anyonewho would like to purchase this DVD. It is the custom in our congregation at Shabbat Services to read aloud prior to the recitation of kaddish the names of those whose yahr-zeit occurs in the upcoming week. We are providing the names here for you, so that you can help us make a Minyan, allowing kaddishto be recited for those in mourning or whose custom it is to recite the kaddish. The Hebrew dates have been added. Listings are also onour website for both the current day and the following seven days.
