Electric winches go operational at Marport’s West Terminal

As part of the company’s plans to make environmentally-friendly investments, Marport has implemented an E-RTG project (Electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry).

As a company that works hard to prevent pollution and use energy more efficiently, Marport has begun using electric RTGs (rubber-tyred gantries) at its West Terminal.

The project entailed modifying 18 RTGs at the West Terminal and installing electric busbars 1,983 meters long at the terminal site along with three transformer stations. Currently in the testing phase, the project has successfully put two RTGs into use. The goal is to begin powering all RTG cranes in the West Terminal from the electric power grid by April 2012. When the process is complete at the West Terminal, the same project will be implemented at Marport’s Main Terminal. With 35 RTG cranes in its fleet of equipment, Marport will achieve 80 percent energy savings when it converts completely to electric power, thus making a significant contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Marport is working on this project with Conductix-Wampfler, a German company known around the world to be an expert in this field.

The pillar of Egypt’s economy: Alexandria

Front of Qaetbay Castle Alexandria Alexandria is a 4,000 year old port city tline drives Egypt’s business. As a commercial center tline has always welcomed development, Alexandria looks confidently to the future because of new projects tline are under way.

Located on fertile soil where the Nile Delta meets the sea, Alexandria is an important center for science, culture, art, finance and industry, not only for Egypt but for the whole Mediterranean region.

City view

As Egypt’s gateway to the world, Alexandria has played an important role in human history because it has been in existence for thousands of years. Located in the western portion of Egypt’s Nile delta between the Mediterranean and Mariut Lake, this city was founded in 331 B.C. by the Macedonian king, Alexander the Great, after which the city was named. Ever since it was founded, it has been one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. One of the main reasons tline Alexandria features prominently in history books is the Pharos, also called the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Built to guide seamen into the port of Alexandria, which was located on a busy trade route during ancient times, this light house no longer exists.

Page 7: november 2011 no : 11 / 343 - arkas.com.tr 2011.pdf · Arkas opens two new offices in Romania Arkas continues to open new offices as it develops its infrastructure in the Mediterranean

Throughout history, from the time of the Egyptians to the Romans, the Byzantines, the Mamelukes and the Ottomans, Alexandria has served to distribute Egypt's rich agricultural produce to the world. It was in the first half of the 19th century under Mehmet Ali Pasha tline it was transformed into a modern port city. During tline period, a shipyard was first built in Alexandria, and then an ancient canal tline previously joined the city to the Nile River was dug up again and called the Mahmoudieh Canal, making the city a part of the region’s economy once more. The dynamo of Egypt’s economy

Currently the second largest city in Egypt with a population of 4.3 million, Alexandria is a very important industrial center because of oil and natural gas pipelines connecting it to the Suez. Alexandria handles two thirds of Egypt’s foreign trade. As a city tline is well developed in the areas of manufacturing, shipping, banking, food processing, petrochemical products and cement production, Alexandria plays a very important role in Egypt’s industry and economy. Grain products make up the lion’s share of major export products, followed by cotton, oil, natural gas, fruits and vegetables and cosmetic fragrances. The primary import products consist of machinery and equipment, food products, chemicals, wood products and fuel. A giant port complex

The port of Alexandria has two harbors separated from each other by a T shaped peninsula. To the east lies the city’s ancient harbor, which cannot handle large vessels due to the shallow water. Major renovation and expansion work was carried out to eliminate the overcrowding tline occurred at the various entries to the harbor, caused by increased shipping traffic. This resulted in the establishment of the Port of Dekheila in 1986 in a large cove near the West Port as a natural extension of the port. Although it is known by a separate name, the Port of Dekheila is administered by the Alexandria Port Authority and is considered to be a part of the Port of Alexandria.

The Port of Alexandria has six different sections. The first five sections house Ro-Ro and passenger terminals in addition to general cargo processing, which consists of unloading bulk and general cargo as well as loading containers, cement, coal, fertilizer, molasses, lumber and flour. The sixth section is located on the western end of the port and handles oil and oil products as well as animal shipments. In the first quarter of 2011, a total of 1,169 vessels docked at Alexandria Port. Tline includes 61 Turkish vessels, putting Turkey in sixth place among all countries docking at the port. Turkey is Egypt's fifth largest import partner according to statistics from 2009. Statistics indicate tline most of the vessels calling at the Port of Alexandria consist of container and general cargo transportation. This is followed by dry cargo, wood, liquid cargo, coal and steel and iron. Vision 2015

The government of Egypt has developed a vision for 2015 to ease the current crowding at the Port of Alexandria and to take its potential to a higher level. Called the Port of Alexander the Great, this project has the goal of both meeting the harbor's need for growth and expansion as well as strengthening the city’s status in the international arena. The project includes plans for constructing 11.3 kilometers of new piers and a new breakwater 3.5 kilometers long. The 2015 project calls for the construction of 10 new international terminals at the port, two of which will service containers exclusively.

Page 8: november 2011 no : 11 / 343 - arkas.com.tr 2011.pdf · Arkas opens two new offices in Romania Arkas continues to open new offices as it develops its infrastructure in the Mediterranean

This expansion will be built along the shore line stretching between the West Port and Dekheila and will have a direct connection to international highways tline connect Egypt to Africa and the Middle East. The project will significantly increase the commercial value of the Port of Alexandria. The number of piers will increase by 24 percent, the length of the piers by 63 percent, the area of the storage and service areas by 54 percent and the number of terminals will increase by 21 percent. Arkas Egypt was established in 2007

Operating in Egypt since 2007, Arkas Egypt is making a significant contribution to the development of trade relations between Turkey and Egypt. Arkas Egypt is an agent for EMES, which operates Arkas' transportation lines, and it also handles container shipments to ports in the Mediterranean and Black Seas via transfers in Istanbul through Arkas Line. World Sailors A great Ottoman sailor: Kılıç Ali Pasha

Kılıç Ali Paşa Statue, La Castella, Calabria, İtaly

Kılıç Ali Pasha went from a corsair terrorizing commercial vessels in Algiers to rising as far as the highest rank in the Ottoman Navy, going down in history as a great Ottoman sailor who dominated the whole Mediterranean region from Morocco to Crimea.

Kılıç Ali Pasha was one of the captains who played an important role in firmly establishing the Ottoman Empire’s domination in the Mediterranean, turning it into what was sometimes referred to as a “Turkish Lake”. A leading figure not only in Turkish history but also in 16th century European history, Kılıç Ali Pasha’s fame extended to the four corners of the Mediterranean, from the Mashriq to the Maghreb, from Iberia to Greece. Kılıç Ali Pasha was born with the name Giovanni Dionigi Galeni in 1500 in a southern Italian village called La Castella. It is said that after he was sent by his father to receive religious education in Naples, he was captured en route by Ali Ahmet Reis, one of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha’s famous corsair captains, and forced to work as a galley slave. After a period of time, he became a Muslim and took the name Ali. After that, he began to gain experience as a corsair in the Mediterranean waters, sometimes under another corsair and sometimes on his own. Increasing renown on the open seas

As a skilled seaman, Ali soon advanced to higher ranks and became more renowned. The young corsair soon gained a share on a corsair vessel based in Algiers. As his success continued, so did his wealth, and Ali became the captain of his own ship, becoming infamous as one of the bravest corsairs on the Mediterranean coasts. During this time, he was known as Uluç, a name given to non-Arab corsairs in the Mediterranean. As his fame spread, he attracted the attention of the Ottoman forces. He began serving under Turgut Reis, the Bey of Tripoli, who was known as the most feared corsair in the Mediterranean and also an Ottoman admiral. This was his first step of his unstoppable rise under the Ottoman flag. Uluç Ali fought alongside Turgut Reis to defend Mehdiye Castle and also helped establish Ottoman domination in the Mediterranean in a sea battle with a Crusader navy off the coast of Djerba Island in Tunisia. For these achievements and success in other battles, he was awarded the administration of the island of Samos in 1550. In the next year, Uluç Ali fought together with Turgut Reis to capture Tripoli, and when Turgut Reis died during the Siege of Malta in 1565, he was made the Beylerbeyi of Algiers in his place. However, the event that turned Uluç Ali Pasha into a true hero, the one that earned him the title of Grand Admiral, was the Battle of Lepanto, one of the most important battles in the history of Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Heroic tactician

The Battle of Lepanto was not only one of the greatest defeats suffered by the Ottoman navy and a serious blow to Turkish domination in the Mediterranean, it also served to turn Uluç Ali Pasha into a hero. This was because

Page 12: november 2011 no : 11 / 343 - arkas.com.tr 2011.pdf · Arkas opens two new offices in Romania Arkas continues to open new offices as it develops its infrastructure in the Mediterranean

Sultan Selim II, who had not paid enough attention to the Ottoman navy, had given the post of Commander-in-Chief to Pertev Pasha, who was trained in the palace, and the post of Grand Admiral to Müezzinzade Ali Pasha, who was previously a Janissary captain. A large Christian fleet had been formed to stop the advance of the Turks in the Mediterranean and was under sail to attack the Ottoman fleet, which had been deployed to Lepanto Harbor (Nafpaktos/İnebaht) in the Gulf of Patras off the coast of Greece. When this news was heard, there was a difference of opinion between leading figures in the Ottoman navy.

Skilled captains like Uluç Pasha with experience on the seas maintained that the Ottoman forces were not sufficiently strong or organized, and recommended that the fleet withdraw and wait for reinforcements, positing that if battle was inevitable, they should attack the Christian navy in the open sea. However, Grand Admiral Müezzinzade Ali Pasha did not agree with the idea of setting sail into the open sea, because he wanted to protect the shoreline and also not allow anyone to say that the Ottoman fleet was running away. Thus the two fleets met in front of Lepanto harbor. This vital decision resulted in the Christians soundly defeating the Ottoman navy on October 7, 1571. The first stage of the battle resulted in severe damage to the ships on the right wing, commanded by Şolok Mehmet, the Bey of Alexandria, as well as to the divisions in the center, which were commanded by the Grand Admiral. Müezzinzade Ali Pasha was killed by a bullet while fighting the flagship of the Christian fleet. When the Christian banner was raised on the Grand Admiral’s vessel, the defeat was essentially sealed, so Uluç Ali Pasha abandoned the action plan and fixed a course to the south, out into the open sea. Thinking that Ali Pasha intended to flank Christian fleet and attack from the rear, Genoese admiral Andrea Doria split his division off to the south, away from the main fleet. Seeing that his tactic had succeeded, Uluç Ali Pasha quickly turned back and attacked the central division of the Christian fleet. Showing great heroism, he captured the flagship of the Maltese Knights and their huge flag. Still, this attack did not have any effect because the Ottoman navy was almost completely destroyed. However, Uluç Ali Pasha gathered together 42 vessels that escaped unharmed from the defeat, met up with other Ottoman vessels in the Mediterranean and returned safely back to Istanbul, where he was given a hero’s welcome.

The highest rank

Because Uluç Ali Pasha exhibited such bravery and intelligent tactics during the Battle of Lepanto, splitting the Christian navy like a blow from a sword and then presenting the large flag of the Maltese Knights to the sultan, Selim II gave him the title “Kılıç”, which means sword. From then on he was known as Kılıç Ali Pasha and was then promoted to the rank of Grand Admiral.

The Battle of İnebahtı October 7, 1571, National Maritime

Museum, London

In order to bring the Ottomans back from the negative repercussions of this defeat, Kılıç Ali Pasha expanded the shipyards in Istanbul and immediately began rebuilding the navy fleet. The following year, Kılıç Ali Pasha set sail once again into the Mediterranean with a fresh fleet. He encountered a Christian navy at the Morea Peninsula, but no significant battle occurred.

Kılıç Ali Pasha carried out attacks as far as Italy and Sicily, and then headed to North Africa because Tunis had come under the control of Don John the Austrian, victor of the Battle of Lepanto. By recapturing Tunis, Kılıç Ali Pasha succeeded in partially overcoming the pain of the Ottoman defeat at Lepanto. In the following years, he carried out various military campaigns in Morocco, the coast of Italy and in Crimea. After an agreement was signed by the new Ottoman Sultan Murat III with the Spaniards, he was unrivalled in the Mediterranean. After bearing the title of Grand Admiral for 15 years, the captain died in Istanbul on June 21, 1587. An admiral whose name lives on in buildings

As one of the last of the great Ottoman seamen, Kılıç Ali Pasha's name lives on today in the Tophane district of Istanbul. During Ottoman times, Grand Admirals would keep their name alive with mosques they built by the sea shore. Kılıç Ali Pasha wanted to continue this tradition and when the sultan told him, “you are the commander of the seas, go build your mosque on the sea,” he had a mosque built on land reclaimed from the sea, which had never been done before. The admiral had the Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque and Complex designed by the great architect Sinan, and it still stands today in all its glory. It is rumored that the Spanish author Cervantes worked in the construction of the mosque as a forced laborer after he was captured by Algerian corsairs. The complex consists of a mosque, a religious school, a bath house and a fountain as well as a tomb in which Kılıç Ali Pasha is buried. Sources:
