Let’s begin the weekly sharing in November, and see how it goes. Because worship themes for November open us to a wider world, with focus on global good, we’ll share non-pledge offerings for the month with Eliot’s partner village in Transylvania, where the need of the rural poor is always great. Thanksgiving Sunday

Bread Sunday is a long-standingEliot Chapel tradition celebratingThanksgiving. You're invited tobring bread to share with the con-gregation. Especially meaningful are

loaves reflecting ethnic background and loaves youassociate with Thanksgiving, harvest, and extendedfamily. This is a service for all ages--a celebrationspanning the generations.

If you would like to bring bread to share at one ofthe services, please decide in advance which serviceyou will attend (9:15, 10:15, or 11:15), and sign upon the bulletin board no later than Sunday, Nov. 14to reserve a spot.

The offering at the Bread Sunday serviceswill provide a weekly loaf of bread to over 100 im-poverished and elderly parishioners ofNyardszentmarton Unitarian Church and for generalsupport of the villagers in Eliot’s partner church inTransylvania.

In The Window

You may have noticed an unusual addition to thewindows of the Eliot Library in recent weeks. OnSeptember 12, Rev. David Keyes handed over hiswalking stick to the Board of Trustees at Eliot Cha-pel when he was installed as Interim Minister. Thewalking stick, a visible sign of his vocation, was en-trusted to Eliot for safekeeping while he guides usthrough the current transition. When David’s job iscomplete, the walking stick will be returned to himso he can move on to help another congregation inneed. The unique staff is the work of a Transylva-nian Unitarian woodcarver using ancient Szekelymotifs. The walking stick will remain in the Librarywindows as long as David is here, as a reminder ofhis calling and commitment to Eliot.

Transition Team

Your Eliot Chapel Transition Team is led by ClintBlandford, ably assisted by Hilary Babcock, RobinSpence, Larry Ross and Claire Robertson, allworking closely with Rev. Keyes. This summer weled a service giving an overview of the five deve-lopmental tasks associated with this time of transi-tion for the church. Those tasks are summarized asfollows:

1. Coming to terms with history2. Discovering a new identity3. Allowing needed new leadership to emerge4. Renewing denominational linkages5. Committing to new directions in ministry

The text of our service, in which we introduced our-selves and each spoke about one of the tasks, is availa-ble in booklet form in the Guest Center and for down-load on the Eliot website at www.eliotchapel.org (clickon the Programs tab on the left side navigation; it islocated on the Transition Info. page).

We have been meeting, listening, and discussing thebest ways to facilitate these five tasks. We partici-pated with the staff, the Board, and Rev Keyes in aLeadership Retreat two weeks ago. We assistedRev. Keyes in planning the Living By Heart Retreat, which was a big success.

As part of the second task, we want everyone in thecongregation to have the opportunity to come to-gether to identify and articulate the strengths of ourchurch as it is now and as we wish it to be goingforward. Our next project will be to create opportuni-ties for the congregation to gather in small groupsled by trained facilitators using a process known asAppreciative Inquiry to help explore and record ourimpressions. Once clearly defined, these core quali-ties can be used as guiding principles to chart ourcourse into the future. We anticipate these groupmeetings will start after the busy holiday season, inJanuary 2011.

The Transition Team members can be reached at ourgroup email: [email protected] sent to that address will go to all of us and toRev. Keyes. We will try to have regular updates in

the newsletter to keep everyone posted on our activi-ties. See you at church!

Partner Church News

Bread Sunday Thanksgiving CollectionThe Bread Sunday Thanksgiving collection is ouropportunity to contribute to Eliot’s partner church, the Unitarian St. Martin’s church, located in theTransylvanian part of Romania. The money col-lected at the Bread Sunday services will be used toprovide a weekly loaf of bread to over 100 impove-rished and elderly parishioners of St. Martin’schurch and for general support of the Partner Churcheffort. This collection is a long tradition at EliotChapel and we have always given generously.

Sue Blandford, an Eliot member, has stated “I knowfirsthand how grateful the older members are to re-ceive a weekly loaf of bread. On our trip to Nya-radszentmarton (St. Martin) in June of 2005, severalolder people came up to humbly thank me for ‘theAmerican bread.’ I was touched to learn that onepoorly dressed man whose job it is to pump the ped-als of the church organ, regularly gives up his loaf ofbread to a villager more needy than himself.”

We hope that connecting our annual Bread Servicewith the needs of fellow Unitarians will providedeeper meaning to our Thanksgiving service. Pleasegive generously. (Checks can be made out to EliotChapel with Partner Church on the memo line.)

Partner Church Committee plansSilent Auction during Holiday Bazaar

Making a Difference

Guest at Your Table

How can you have a direct impacton human justice? By participat-ing in Eliot's Guest at Your Tablecampaign. Guest At Your Table isan outreach effort from the Unita-rian Universalist Service Commit-tee (UUSC) designed to raise

money and awareness for human rights throughoutthe world. Each year, Eliot distributes Guest at YourTable boxes to RE children and adults and encourag-es them to fill the box with spare change. We willhave a table in Adams Hall November 14 and 21 soplease stop by and pick up a box. If you're hostingThanksgiving dinner, consider asking your guest tobring extra change to put in your box. Children en-joy watching their boxes fill up! Boxes will be col-lected December 19. If you have any questions, contact Mary Lu Durbin or Anne Meneely.

Room at the Inn

Thank you for your response to our request for vo-lunteers. We still have a few slots for cooks and wecan always use new drivers, but otherwise we arecovered through the end of the year. Room at theInn currently has a full house of 9 adults and 11children. That is twenty people who have a safeplace to stay for a month. When we provide shelterand meals on Thursday nights, our guests can con-centrate on working toward their goals of a perma-nent place to live. The social worker at the day sitehelps them prepare a plan of action and get con-nected to other social service agencies. Meeting ourguests at dinner, you discover they are very apprecia-tive of what we do. Your help does make a differ-ence in their lives.

Social Action Needs You

The Social Action Task Force needs you to tell usabout your service, advocacy, and justice work in thecommunity and afar. What work are you passionateabout? What causes are you already donating yourtime and energy to, which you feel could benefitfrom Eliot participation?

Let us know the name of the organization and thework you have done. Help us revitalize our socialaction ministry! Contact Amy Stark.

Scrip Cards for Social Action

Did you know that you can donate a scrip card to alocal charity and benefit both Eliot Chapel and thecharity? Two local charities are especially interestedin receiving grocery scrip cards from Shop n' Savefor their clients. Our own Kirkwood program, KirkCare has been lending a helping hand to local citi-zens since 1982 by providing food and financial as-sistance. Another worthy charity is the InternationalInstitute of St. Louis. Annually the InternationalInstitute helps thousands of refugees and immi-grants settle in St. Louis and become integrated intoAmerica.

Look for tables from the Social Action Task Force inAdams Hall on several Sundays in November. Youcan buy a Shop n' Save card that benefits Eliot Cha-pel at the Scrip table. Then donate it at the SocialAction table. Families that receive your cards willhave a greatly needed gift to help them have a brigh-ter holiday of their own.
