New Meeting Location—Boys & Girls Club, GH—& PAL Dues are due!!!!

November General Meeting Date– 11/19/09

Holiday Party—December 17, 2009—Boys & Girls Club -6:45—9:15 p.m.

January 11—PAL Members Show at Kimball Gallery/Coffee Shop

From the President…..

For those of you at our well attended (73 people!) first meeting at Boys and girls club- you saw first hand the great facilities. The built in slide projector made Robin Peterson‘s slides extra large. What a great pro-gram! Of course, we had a few first time glitches- we were supposed to get the double room, we ran out of Boys and Girls club tags, and parking was a challenge. Don‘t lose heart, Boys and Girls club has assured us that we will get the double room in the future (and 2 projectors can run off the

one laptop- how cool is that!), we can use our own sign in sheet and ―stick on‖ name tags, and we have a plan to alleviate the parking crunch. Make sure to read the article about next meeting. We aim to please!

I wanted to take this opportunity to say how much I admire Peninsula Art League, and how much they can help you, as an artist, to grow. I consider myself to be an emerging artist. I am on an inter-esting path to becoming a professional artist in all aspects: in the quality of art I produce, in how I present my artwork and myself, and how I can turn that into a profitable profession. Peninsula Art League has been instrumental in this process. There have been members to email and talk to about recommended website hosting, and I am excited to announce I finally got my website going: www.annemooreknapp.com.

Kari Tirrell talked at the last meeting about the Peninsula Art League Blogspot, and how easy (and important) it is to use the PAL blogspot and set up your own blog (with lots of links!). I am joining a critique group through PAL. I try to take part in some of the activities- like figure drawing, plein air, still life groups, because the more you do, the more you can improve. The great programs at the meetings get me going (even when it is something I may never do) like the encaustic program gave me a great idea for a texture underlayment for an upcoming pastel piece, and Robin‘s program (sorry Robin, I will never go up above the Arctic Circle with grizzly bears around!) has me looking for (tamer) Artist In Residence Opportunities. I hear about exhibit opportunities and upcoming shows and resources like Artist Trust. I have the opportunity to apply for a grant for a workshop. What a great group on interesting and knowledgeable people we have! Make sure that you are taking advan-tage of these opportunities to learn and grow. Make sure that you give back by volunteering for PAL activities, and don‘t forget to meet new people, forge links, and help other artists, too. Teaching, vol-unteering, and helping others really helps YOU the most!

Anne Knapp, PAL President

Please note—the PAL Meeting is November 19th at 7:00 p.m. at the

NOVEMBER VIDEO REVIEW—By Cecile Anderson

We are the new owners of several videos which were recently donated to our PAL library. Judy Buskirk, a

PAL member who happens to also work at the Peninsula Library, just received several videos from her boss,

Craig Hunter. Apparently Craig‘s mother, Lee Hunter, used to be a PAL member, and had a collection of in-

structional tapes, DVDs and books. Per Craig‘s wishes, Judy has passed those on to us.

Eight watercolor VHS tapes and one book are by Arleta Pech, a well known painter of realistic floral arrange-ments. You can see her work at www.arletapech.com. In addition, we received two Jackie Simmonds VHS tapes on floral pastels and one landscape DVD by pastelist, Bob Rohm. I plan to bring these videos to our next meeting. I‘ll bring the books (we only have six) to the meeting as well,

even though we don‘t have a book library. I‘m thinking we could simply sell the books for $5.00 each & do-

nate the proceeds to PAL.

Thanks Craig & Judy!

Michelle Sleight is the featured artist at the

Kimball Gallery/Coffee Shop—please stop by to

enjoy her whimsical artwork—‖Dreamfield‖ on

the left and ―Chicken Walk‖ above. Her show

runs until November 30, 2009.

From Nan Feagin:

By now the Seventh Annual Open Juried Show has come to a successful conclusion, and it is time to acknowledge and thank those who made it such a success. Members of the Fox Island Painters group who spearheaded the show include Cece Anderson, Nan Feagin, Charli Meacham, Marlene Misura, Ronnie Schneeman and Feather Hilger. Our appreciation to Lynda Desmarteau and Lita Dawn Stanton for their beautiful hanging of the show, to Sherry Weitzel who orchestrated the refreshments on Opening Night, and to Russ and Christy Camerer who acted as shipping agents and transporters of signs, hanging equipment and as"gofers" in general. Charlee Glock-Jackson did a very effective and informative job spreading the word about the show, both through emails to members and by her delightful articles in the Gig Harbor Weekly newspaper. And, of course, our thanks to all of the PAL members who attended the opening of the show, and then re-turned to view it again with friends and relatives.

From Myrna Binion—I want to add how

much I enjoyed being a ―Docent‖ for a tour

of the Open Juried Show this year. My

―Tour‖ group was from Sound Vista Village

and we all enjoyed the experience thor-

oughly. I know Anne Knapp and Nan

Feagin also acted as docents and tour

guides for groups. The tours gave many

more of our community members access to

the show and a better understanding of

what PAL does to bring art to Gig Harbor.

The tours were an inspired idea—sign me

up for another one next year! At right is a

photo of my tour group from Sound Vista—

they really enjoyed the show! Sharon Hochhalter, Program Director on left with tour

B&G Club & PAL Meeting Update– Anne Knapp

Boys and Girls Club has promised we will get the big double room from now on- plenty of room and seating. The set up for the double room is such that one PC can feed into the projectors in both rooms, so dual screens will give everyone a great view!

The Boys and Girls Club needs to make sure that all visitors to the building sign in and wear a badge or name tag. We have worked out a compromise, in that, PAL will have its own sign-in sheet, and we will provide stick-on name tags. In order to encourage folks to bring their own ―permanent tags‖ when possible, there will be a door prize drawing done during the break for anyone who brings their own tag! PAL has also signed up to get access to the room at 6:15, so if you want to come a little early and park in front on the street, or get the best parking spots, you can have access to the room early and have more opportunity to connect with other artists. Refreshments will arrive early, so you will have time for a cup and a chat!

There will not always be a GHHS JV football home game to conflict with our meeting, but it‘s good to take the precaution. Parking will always be 1st come, 1st served. This is a great facility - we want it to be easy and friendly for our members to use!

Art Stimulus Package

The PAL scholarship program is not just for the kids. We do sponsor significant scholarships to local high schools for students actively pursuing post high school art careers, but we are also here to help the general membership with their art oriented CE. Have you ever wanted to take an art workshop but just couldn't justify the cost? PAL wants to help you with that.

The Peninsula Art League Scholarship Program is your "stimulus package" for art explora-tion, education and discovery. Art League members in good standing, especially those of you with a strong volunteer history, are candidates for up to $250 in scholarship funds. Art workshops, classes and other art oriented programs may qualify for scholarship support. To find out; send your biography, a short letter describing your funding need, including how this will impact your art and 3 representative images (web sized jpg files) of your work (or a link to your website or blog where we can see the art you are making) to the PAL Scholarship Committee; chairwoman, Sherrie Bonsell at <[email protected]>

Chair Affair Update—From Anne Knapp

There is still time to take part in the Chair Affair that will benefit the Furniture Bank. (They pro-vide furniture for foster kids, domestic violence agencies, etc.) They are having a benefit auction that will be held at the Tacoma Art Museum on March 4

th, 2010.

Artists who decorate a chair for the auction will get to attend the gala event for free, have their photo and bio with their chair; and that info will also be used in the program, and publicity. The deadline for the finished chair is February 5

th, 2010.

You must register to take part- email Dion Rurik at [email protected] to get guidelines, etc. The Furniture Bank will try to arrange for a chair for you if you don’t already have a “spare” chair to donate. They need cool artsy looking chairs that will command a bidding war. You can also use re-lated furniture items (like a bench, etc), or maybe a small sculpture chair or piece of jewelry chair, or

a chair pot! Who knows- your imagination is the limit (check with Dion if you think it’s too out there!). Contact me (Anne Knapp) for more information.

They just let me know they would like before and after pictures of your chair. I am showing you my first chair as “Ugly” and (now) “Handsome”!

Same chair—lots different look! I used leather appliqué with a NW In-dian design—NW Salmon-eaters—and it is now quite stunning and was lots of fun!

PAL minutes

Oct 20, 2009—Meeting held at Uddenberg State Farm meeting room, Gig Harbor

Members present: Anne Knapp, Myrna Binion, Mary McInnis, Rhene Johns, Virginia Alvarez, Nan Feagin, Cec Anderson, Marti Green, Kari Tirrell, Patty McQuillin, Jon Lonning, Sheri Weitzel, Arvid Anderson, Charli Glock-Jackson,

Called to order at 10:06 by new president Anne Knapp

Treasurers report (Jon Lonning): at the end of fiscal 2009 net worth - $138,586.00 (not including regional show award payout); profit $10,170 (double from last year but we had fewer expenditures).

Regional Show: We would like to change the venue for next year as the Civic Center will not be open on Fridays; the workshop broke even because instructors agreed to go with those who had signed up; workshops usually help pay for awards for the show and need to be self funding; there was discussion regarding workshops, jurors, scheduling – perhaps change the time of year for the open show and corresponding workshop; group tours of the current show are available

Boys and Girls Club: Our first meeting at the Boys and Girls Club will be October 22, 2009.

Screening for the upcoming Winter Members show will be held at 5:30pm; suggestion was made that the screening application forms be made available online; we are giving applicants the choice of email notification or snail mail; Marti updated the submis-sion forms.

Committee Reports:

Membership: Christy sent out renewals but still has to call with reminders. Don‘t make her call you!!

Program: Any ideas for programs? Please let Carol Lemon know.

Newsletter: 50 people still get the black and white newsletter via snail mail.

Website: Charli Glock-Jackson will add screening application form and guidelines on the website; job descriptions of all commit-tee chairs and volunteers will also be added to the website.

Scholarship: Sherrie is working on updating the wording on the High School scholarship posters to make it more clear as to the requirement of future educational plans; the fact that PAL awards scholarships to local high schoolers should be publicized;

Future exhibits (Rhene): Winter Member‘s show will be at the Kimball Gallery; Jan 11 to Feb 8; we still need a juror; the recep-tion will be held on January 17th; Marshal Johnson will jury the summer show; prize ribbons can be obtained in bulk online, or stay local but order ribbons enough to last the year. Motion moved and seconded to allow Rhene to spend up to $150 for ribbons with-out board approval.

DVD/Video Library: any suggestions please contact Cec Anderson.

Equipment and storage: We could use some new display racks to replace the heavy metal ones (non-grid non-see through type); Marti Green has some she wants to sell; can the overhead mirror be stored at B&G Club?

Festival: (Virginia) Carol has lots of information she will give to Russ and Christy.

Sunshine: motion made and seconded to eliminate this position.

Blog: Kari Terrell has set up a blog to promote PAL artists; she invites you to be an author to the blog by going to www.peninsulaartleague.blogspot.com.

Budget: no major expenses anticipated for next year; the projected budget can be used for submission to Pierce County Arts Com-mission for grant for arts education (excluding fundraisers); perhaps through B&G club for arts education; proposal for 2010 to members to submit for art festival art activities for all ages; this will be left up to the festival committee to determine if it is worth the effort.

Meeting adjourned at 11:44 am

Respectfully submitted by Mary McInnis

Salmonchanted Changes...Bill Fogarty will present information to PAL regarding

plans for the next project to support ―Hands On Art‖ in our local public

schools. This project, supported and promoted by The Gig Harbor Art Walk

Galleries invited artists to produce ―Salmon‖ the likes of which have never been

seen in local streams in ‗05 and ‗07. The Salmon were auctioned and the money

donated to provide children‘s art in schools. The group is looking to do some-

thing different this year—perhaps decorating a Heron will be in your future!

You can reach Bill at Waters Edge Gallery—253-858-7449- and he will be at the

next PAL Meeting for a short presentation—more to come……….

BLOG UPDATE from Kari Tirrell: The address for the PAL blog is http://peninsulaartleague.blogspot.com/

The purpose of our blog is to create more exposure for PAL members, particularly those who are actively showing and selling their art. PAL members can post any time they have anything newsworthy to report: if you have work in an ex-hibit or gallery, have won an award, are teaching a class, or having an artist‘s reception, etc. The blog is an effective way to exchange information with other PAL members in real time, while also promoting yourself, your events, and your art to the general public.
